She was born on 17th March, 1 962 in Karnal. She did her B.E. in Aeronautical Engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh in 1982. She finished her Masters from University of Texas in 1984. She did another masters and then a Ph.D from University of Colorado.

In 1988, she started working at NASA Ames Research Centre as Vice-President of Overset Methods. She researched on fluid dynamics of landing and take-off.

She held Flight Instructor and Pilot certifications also. She became a US citizen in 1991. So, she applied for NASA Astronaut Corps. She joined in 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996. In the weightlessness of space, she said :

“You are just your intelligence.”

She had covered 10.67 million km, which was equivalent to travelling around the Earth, 252 times. Her first space mission commenced on 19th November, 1997, as part of a six member crew aboard space shuttle Columbia. In this mission, she spent 372 hoars in space. She was assigned the task of deploying the Spartan Satellite.

After finishing this project, she assumed technical duties in the space station. Her work was lauded by her peers. In 2000, she was selected for her second flight, as part of the crew of STS 107. 16th January 2003, she and other members boarded the flight. She conducted some experiments studying Earth and space science, technology development and astronaut safety and health. Unfortunately, the shuttle disintegrated over Texas, while re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere on 1st February, 2003, with the loss of all seven members.

She was posthumously awarded Congressional Space Medal of Honour, NASA Space Flight Medal and Distinguished Service Medal. The Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Alumni Award at University of Colorado, was renamed after her. An asteroid, a hill peak on Mars, an Indian series of satellites, a NASA supercomputer are all named after her. Government of Haryana established Kalpana Chawla Planetarium at Kurukshetra. A medical college was named after her and opened in her birthplace in 2013. She died young, and left an indelible imprint on the minds of aspiring youngsters to live a life of quality. Her spirit encourages us to take risks and not be afraid of the challenges. She was a gem the vacuum created by her death can never be filled. As her brother said:

“She is a permanent star in the sky. She will always be up there where she belongs.”

Summary of News Report on the Death of Kalpana Chawla

A sad event happened in space. The U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia, with seven astronauts, including Indian-born American astronaut Kalpana Chawla, broke apart and caught fire while it was coming back to Earth. This happened on 1st February 2003. Unfortunately, all seven people on board lost their lives. The shuttle lost contact with NASA when it was about to land. It was very high up in the sky and traveling very fast. The shuttle had been in space for 16 days, and the crew did many experiments. This was the 28th time Columbia flew in space, and it was built to fly many more times, but this time something went terribly wrong. It’s a very sad day for space exploration.

Ans: The poet, in saying “Beauty is heard in…”, is using metaphorical language to suggest that there are sounds in the world that evoke a sense of beauty or aesthetic pleasure.

Regarding Keats’ quote, “Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter,” he is expressing the idea that the imagination can create even more beautiful music than what is actually heard. This implies that the mind’s ability to create something perfect. Also, the poet says that the mind creates an idealized version of melodies that can surpass the enjoyment derived from listening to real-world music.

Introduction

This chapter gives an account of the life of Kalpana Chawla and her journey into space. It documents how the journey ended in a tragedy. Despite the unfortunate end, she remains a role model for all those who dare to dream. 

Born in India in a town called Karnal, Kalpana Chawla grew up to become the first woman of Indian origin to travel into space. Her journey to become an astronaut started in India, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering. Despite opposition from her father, she fought for her dream and moved to the United States of America. There, she earned her master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree in the same field. 

She not only became an astronaut but was also a licensed pilot and flight instructor. Her first journey into space took place in 1997 in a US space shuttle named Columbia . After the success of this mission, she applied to another space programme of NASA. After training as an astronaut, her second journey into space began on 16 January 2003.

This accident is referred to as the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. It killed all the crew members including the Indian-American astronaut, Kalpana Chawla. She was not only a dreamer who had big ambitions but also a brave human who fought whatever obstacles came in her way.

Kalpana Chawala was born in Karnal, Haryana. She got American citizenship after marrying the American flight instructor, Jean-Pierre Harrison. Thus, we refer to her as an Indian-American.

Kalpana studies in the Tagore School Karnal. After school, she joined an engineering college. Soon, she went to the United States of America to study for her master’s degree. Even though her father opposed her decision, she never gave up and went there.

Thus, she went on to become the first Indian-American woman astronaut. The first space mission of Kalpana in the space lasted for 15 days, 16 hours and 34 minutes long. In her crew, there were astronauts’ from Japan as well as Ukraine.

Along with the help of her team members, she performed different experiments for a price tag of around 56 million dollars. Sadly, when the news of the Columbia Disaster broke out, it left everyone in shock and disbelief.

Soon, the news of Kalpana Chawla along with the death of her other crew members on the space shuttle program came. Many came together in solidarity for the lost lives. Moreover, a journalist also tagged her as a heroine.

As per the reporter, an astronaut is a very able person. They must be knowledgeable in everything from biology to astrophysics to aeronautical engineering. In other words, an astronaut has encyclopedic knowledge.

Therefore, we learn that Kalpana Chawla stated that we can turn our dreams into reality. We must only have the courage and determination to do it.

As a child, Kalpana never dreamt of space travel. It was not sufficient for her to graduate from an engineering college. After graduating as an aeronautical engineer from Punjab Engineering College, she went for a master’s degree to the United States, in spite of her father’s opposition. Later, she did her P.hD in the subject. She had the pride of being the first India born American woman Astronaut to blast off from Florida and be a part of the successful space mission. Kalpana was born in Karnal, Haryana but was a naturalized U.S Citizen. She married a flight instructor – Jean Pierre Harrison. Apart from being an astronaut, she was also trained to fly single and multi-engine land airplanes, single seaplanes and gliders. She was a certified flight instructor. After qualifying as  a pilot, she decided to apply to NASA’S SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM and was selected for training as an Astronaut. She was an extraordinary woman who thought differently and was an enthusiastic and optimistic. Her first space mission was 16 days long. During this time, she travelled 10.45 million kilometres in 252 orbits.The crew had seven members and they conducted 80 experiments. They also checked if  food could be grown in space, how stronger metals and faster computer chips could be created. The news of Columbia disaster made everyone grief-stricken. A shock wave was spread everywhere. A journalist called her a heroine. She had enormous potential and wide information – encyclopedic knowledge of each subject. Her achievements were actually marvellous. She created history and became an inspiration for everyone. Her life is a testimony that dreams can get success. The only thing we need to make them a reality is courage and vision.

Tragedy in Space U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia breaks into flames

Passage: In an unprecedented space tragedy, U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia, carrying India-born American astronaut Kalpana Chawla and six others, broke apart in flames as it streaked over Texas towards its landing strip on Saturday, 1 February 2003, killing all seven on board. The shuttle lost contact with NASA at about 9 a.m. (19.30 hrs 1ST) as it came in for landing. It was flying at an altitude of over 200,000 feet and travelling at over 20,000 km. per hour when ground control lost contact with the shuttle. Columbia had lifted off on 16 January 2003, from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. It had stayed in orbit for 16 days and the seven-member crew conducted 80 experiments before it began its downward journey, which ended in tragedy. This was Columbia’s 28th space flight and the shuttle was said to be good for 100 flights.

Ans:  Dreaming is a common and natural activity of the mind when we are asleep. But the word ‘dream’ also means ambition, a keen desire in life. In that sense, I have a modest dream. I wish to qualify for the medical profession. To me, a doctor ranks next to God as protector of life. He provides relief to the crying patients. He cures diseases. He helps a patient recover from illness, and be happy and live a full life. I wish to be a doctor to help the poor patients, to bring a smile on their faces.

I know that my dream is not easy to realise. I need not only a brilliant mind but also the means to pay for my studies. Nevertheless, I am determined to pursue my goal. I hope to do well in the entrance examination. As for the financial help, I will get it from some bank.

The death of Indian-origin American astronaut Kalpana Chawla and six others on February 1, 2003 when the space shuttle Columbia broke up and burnt as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere played heavily in the minds of NASA officials, who decided to keep another Indian-origin American astronaut, Sunita Williams, in space for eight months.

Before the Columbia accident, the space shuttle Challenger had exploded and killed all crew on January 28, 1986. In all, 14 astronauts have lost their lives in these accidents.

The two accidents "very much affected the decision" to bring Boeing Starliner back without the astronauts, said NASA chief Bill Nelson, who is himself an astronaut and has been part of the investigations into the two space shuttle accidents. He said "obvious mistakes were made" by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Kalpana Chawla died over the skies in southern US when the space shuttle Columbia and her crew broke apart during re-entry, 16 minutes prior to the scheduled landing. She went to Tagore School in Haryana's Karnal in 1976, and graduated with a BSc degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1982. She joined NASA as an astronaut in 1994, after completing further education in the US.

Mr Nelson said the culture in NASA back then was such that despite junior flight engineers warning of risks, none heard them. "Today, folks are encouraged to speak their minds," he added.

So, NASA took the decision to bring home astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore in February 2025, instead of now, in the SpaceX Crew Dragon after engineers spoke their mind about the risks involved in flying the spacecraft in its current condition.

NASA officials said the decision to replace the return spacecraft was "unanimous".

"Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and bring Boeing's Starliner home without crewed is the result of our commitment to safety - our core value and our North Star," said Mr Nelson.

Space engineers identified helium leaks and experienced issues with the spacecraft reaction control thrusters or small rockets on June 6, as Starliner approached the ISS.

NASA in a statement had said the "uncertainty and lack of expert concurrence does not meet the agency's safety and performance requirements for human spaceflight."

NASA then announced it would bring home Boeing's Starliner without the two astronauts by September 6. It will take six hours to return the Starliner to Earth. The spacecraft has had two uncrewed missions before this one, and Boeing is hopeful that it will return safely.
