Oruthee movie review: Navya Nair makes this world a better place

In her return to the big screen after a hiatus, Navya Nair is outstanding as an ordinary ‘little’ woman with extraordinary resilience in Oruthee.

The most remarkable chase seen on screen this year does not involve muscular stars in swish cars. It features a woman with an unexceptional physique, a small boy, a thin-as-a-rake thief, a scooter, a mobike and a ferry. The wow factor in the episode is not speed or a shiny Aston Martin, it is the woman’s perseverance. By the time this scene comes around, Oruthee has already established her, Radhamani, as a lower-middle-class resident of Kochi who juggles a job, housework, children, an elderly mother-in-law, a long-distance marriage and socio-cultural activities on the strength of her hard work, happy relationships and a smile. In short, she’s just another unheralded woman quietly going about her business in a demanding world.

Radhamani (played by Navya Nair) pursues the fellow who stole from her for a few hours that are crunched down to a breathless 13 minutes expertly edited by Lijo Paul in Oruthee . If her persistence seems improbable in a film that appears realistic in its entirety, remember that the idea for Oruthee came from an actual chain-snatching incident in 2018 in which a lady named Soumya dashed after thieves on her two-wheeler and did not give up till they were captured.

Oruthee follows in the footsteps of Maheshinte Prathikaaram , Vikruthi and other precious Malayalam films of the past decade that spotted cinematic potential in seemingly simple yet unusual, telling real-life occurrences. Sometimes, Soumyas emerge because instinct kicks in and gives them more stamina and courage than they knew they possessed. In Radhamani’s case, her resilience is a result of desperation due to straitened circumstances made worse by a series of recent setbacks. She has her back to the wall. Her anguish powers her.

National Award winning director V.K. Prakash’s Oruthee is about the latent extraordinariness in ordinary folk, the havoc that wealthy, well-connected people casually cause while covering up their corruption, and what could happen when one of the ‘little people’ decides to fight back.

We first meet Radhamani on a day that is like any other for her. A medical emergency leads to a financial emergency. When she is cheated by a commercial establishment, she gets embroiled in a David vs Goliath battle not of her making. Around this challenging experience, S. Suresh Babu builds a screenplay that speaks volumes about the convergence of capitalist interests, political machinations and human greed, and the price the masses pay when their mere existence clashes with the high-stakes gambles of the high and mighty.

Radhamani struggles to meet a loved one’s hospital expenses of a few thousand rupees while in the background throughout the narrative, news channels cover the 2018 Karnataka elections following which rivals accused BJP of buying MLAs. When a news flash alleges that the price of a legislator is Rs 50 crore, Radhamani’s son (Adithyan) asks her how many zeroes there are in that figure. She doesn’t know or care because those distant crores mean nothing to her in comparison with the fraction of that amount she needs here and now for survival. The conversation encapsulates the differing priorities of the elite vs those they deem the hoi polloi.

Despite the hair-raising tension Radhamani experiences and her feisty reaction, Oruthee does not take a clichéd path by likening her to an all-conquering goddess-like mythical being. She is consistently shown to be a regular Jane battling a tough situation with incredible spirit.

Oruthee avoids several other clichés and stereotypes especially in its portrayal of the harmony between Radhamani, her mother-in-law (Sreedevi Varma) and mother (K.P.A.C. Lalitha).

The “Gulf wife”, as Meera Jasmine’s character described herself in last month’s Makal , is recurrent in Malayalam cinema since she’s a fixture in Malayali society. Oruthee alludes to a crucial community trait while revealing that Radhamani’s husband Sreekumar (Saiju Kurup) has taken up work abroad unrelated to his skills despite having options back home, and hid the truth from his supportive wife. This adds another layer to the Radhamani-Sreekumar equation that is written so naturally, it feels like a real marriage with all its ups and downs. A man apologising to his woman partner for a transgression is not common in mainstream entertainment anywhere. Remember Ross’ “we were on a break” refrain in Friends ? Oruthee writes Sreekumar as a more evolved man than Ross, unmindful of the discomfort this might cause among conservative male viewers.

While Radhamani’s singledom dominates Oruthee , the film also throws light on other aspects of Malayali society and Kerala: superstition and religiosity co-existing with liberalism in the same family and within the same individual, the audacity of sexual predators towards single women, the everydayness of domestic violence as evidenced by a comment about a woman colleague, the state’s long-running, empowering Kudumbasree programme, and much else.

Oruthee makes itself utterly relatable by spotting plot twists in what one might call the small stuff – the key you cannot find when you’re in a rush, the paper misplaced in a cluttered house.

The film is not just keenly observant, its progressiveness is not tokenistic. For instance, though Vinayakan is superb as Sub-Inspector Antony in whom Radhamani finds an ally, this male character does not take over from the woman once he enters the picture. Unlike too many films in the past, Radhamani retains agency and primacy right until the last shot.

Oruthee has nary a jarring note. Radhamani’s final action after a call to Antony makes for unnecessary melodrama in an otherwise mellow narrative, but I admit I’m quibbling here. More seriously, the song Run Baby Run marks too sharp a deviation from the film’s overall tone.

The meticulousness of the casting is epitomised by the choice of Jayasankar as Radhamani’s quarry in that chase scene. He has little to do other than run, yet he makes the part notable by making his exasperation with this woman’s relentlessness almost amusing.

Each supporting artiste gets space to shine, but Oruthee belongs to Navya Nair who is returning to films after a hiatus. Nair is outstanding here embodying a ‘little’ woman with astonishing resilience. DoP Jimshi Khalid spreads his wings during the chase, while contrasting Kochi’s swank housing complexes with Radhamani’s dingy home, and with dazzling frames of a Thiruvathira dance, but is carefully restrained while shooting Nair. He makes us aware of her prettiness without emphasising it to a distracting degree. In his and Nair’s hands, Radhamani becomes Everywoman who could be you or me.

Through this one woman, Oruthee tells the story of all unsung, supposedly average women, and the fire fuelling the common people’s will to survive. With his unwavering vision, VKP has made an entertaining, thoughtful film befitting Navya Nair’s talent and stardom. She’s back, people.

‘തീ’യായി നവ്യനായർ: ‘ഒരുത്തീ’ റിവ്യൂ

വി.കെ.പ്രകാശിന്റെ സംവിധാനത്തിൽ നവ്യ നായര്‍ കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ‘ഒരുത്തീ’ എന്ന സിനിമയെ ‘തീ’ എന്നു തന്നെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാം. നമ്മുടെ ചുറ്റിലും കാണുന്ന സ്ത്രീകളിൽ ഒരാളാണ് രാധാമണി. പക്ഷേ ഏതൊരു സാഹചര്യത്തോടും പോരാനാടുള്ള തീ അവളിലുണ്ട്. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ സാഹചര്യം അവളിൽ ആ തീ പടർത്തുന്നു. അതിന്റെ കരുത്തിൽ അവള്‍ പ്രതിസന്ധികളോട് പോരാടുന്നു. ആ കാഴ്ചയാണ് ഒരുത്തി.

കേരള സ്റ്റേറ്റ് വാട്ടർ ട്രാൻസ്പോർട്ടിന്റെ ബോട്ടിൽ ടിക്കറ്റ് കലക്‌ടർ ആണ് രാധാമണി (നവ്യനായർ). ഭർത്താവ് ശ്രീകുമാർ (സൈജു കുറുപ്പ്) ഗൾഫിൽ ഗ്രാഫിക് ഡിസൈനറാണ്. രണ്ടു മക്കളും ഭർത്താവിന്റെ അമ്മയുമാണ് രാധാമണിക്ക് ഒപ്പമുള്ളത്. സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധികളുണ്ടെങ്കിലും സന്തുഷ്ടവും സമാധാനപൂർണവുമായ ജീവിതം. പുതിയ വീട് എന്ന സ്വപ്നവുമായി മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്ന ഇടത്തരം കുടുംബം. ഇതിനിടിയിൽ ഭർത്താവിന്റെ ഗൾഫിലെ ജോലി നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നു. അവിടെനിന്നു മറ്റൊരു ജോലി കണ്ടെത്താനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിലാണ് ശ്രീകുമാർ. എന്നാൽ മകൾക്ക് സംഭവിക്കുന്ന ചെറിയൊരു അപകടം രാധാമണിയെ സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലേക്ക് തള്ളിയിടുന്നു. ഈ പ്രശ്നം പരിഹരിക്കാൻ നടത്തുന്ന ശ്രമം വലിയൊരു ചതിയിലാണ് അകപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിവിലേക്ക് രാധാമണിയെ എത്തിക്കുന്നു. അതിൽനിന്നു പുറത്തു കടത്താൻ നടത്തുന്ന ശ്രമങ്ങൾ കൂടുതൽ സംഘർഷങ്ങളിലേക്കാണ് അവളെ എത്തിക്കുന്നത്.

രാധാമണിയും കുടുംബവും ചതിക്കുഴിയിൽനിന്നു പുറത്തു കടക്കാൻ നടത്തുന്ന ശ്രമമാണ് പ്രധാന കഥാതന്തുവെങ്കിലും അതിനുമപ്പുറം മറ്റു പലകാര്യങ്ങളും സിനിമയിൽ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർക്കാൻ സംവിധായകൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ജനാധിപത്യം വിൽപ്പനച്ചരക്കാകുന്നതും സാധാരണക്കാരനു നീതി നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതും സ്വാധീനമുള്ളവർക്ക് എന്തും ചെയ്യാമെന്നതുമായ സാഹചര്യം. എംഎൽമാർക്ക് കോടികൾ വിലയിരുന്ന റിസോര്‍ട്ട് രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലാണ് സ്വന്തം കുടുംബത്തിന് വേണ്ടി ഓടിനടക്കുന്ന രാധാമണിയുടെ ജീവിതം പറയുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് സ്ത്രീകളുടെ മാത്രമല്ല പൗരന്മാരുടെ പ്രതിനിധിയായി രാധാമണിയെ സങ്കൽപിക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യത സിനിമ തുറന്നിടുന്നുണ്ട്. 

നവ്യ നായരുടെ പ്രകടനമാണ് സിനിമയുടെ ഹൈലൈറ്റ്. 10 വർഷത്തോളം നീണ്ട ഇടവേളയ്ക്കുശേഷമാണ് നവ്യ മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചെത്തിയത്. രാധാമണിയുടെ സംഘർഷവും നിസ്സഹായതയും പോരാട്ടവും മറ്റൊരാൾക്ക് ചെയ്തു ഫലിപ്പിക്കാനാവുമോ എന്നു പ്രേക്ഷകരെ ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിധം അനായാസമായ അഭിനയത്തിലൂടെ അത് ഗംഭീരമാക്കാൻ നവ്യയ്ക്ക് സാധിച്ചു. ഈ വരവിൽ മലയാള സിനിമാ പ്രേക്ഷകർക്കും സന്തോഷിക്കാം, കയ്യടിക്കാം. കാരണം കൂടുതൽ മികച്ച അഭിയമൂഹൂർത്തങ്ങൾ മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് നവ്യ സമ്മാനിക്കുമെന്ന് ഉറപ്പാണ്. 

എസ്.ഐ.ആന്റണിയെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച വിനായകന്റെ പ്രകടനവും പ്രത്യേക അഭിനന്ദനം അർഹിക്കുന്നു. ആന്റണി പരുക്കാനാണ്. പക്ഷേ അയാൾക്ക് സഹജീവികളുടെ വേദന അറിയാം. നിയമം നോക്കുകുത്തി ആകുന്നതും ജനാധിപത്യം വിൽപ്പനച്ചരക്കാകുമ്പോൾ എസ്കോർട്ട് പോകേണ്ടി വരുന്നതുമെല്ലാം അയാളെ അസ്വസ്ഥനാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ സങ്കീർണമായ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രത്തെയാണ് വിനായകൻ തന്മയതത്വത്തോടെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്. സൈജു കുറുപ്പ്, സന്തോഷ്, കെപിഎസി ലളിത, മുകുന്ദൻ എന്നിവരും മികച്ച പ്രകടനം നടത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

രാധാമണിക്കൊപ്പം സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ പ്രേക്ഷകരിൽ നിറയുന്ന ആശങ്ക വി.കെ പ്രകാശ് എന്ന സംവിധായകന്റെ മികവിന്റെ തെളിവാണ്. പ്രവചനാധീതമായവയല്ല, സാധാരണ സംഭവങ്ങളാണ് കഥയിലുള്ളത്. ഒരുപാട് ബഹളമില്ലാതെ, രക്തം പൊടിയാതെ, തല്ലില്ലാതെ പ്രേക്ഷക മനസ്സിൽ സംഘർഷം നിറയ്ക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചത് സംവിധായകന്റെ കയ്യടക്കവും അനുഭവസമ്പത്തും വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു. യഥാർഥ സംഭവത്തിൽനിന്നു പ്രചോദനം ഉൾകൊണ്ട് സുരേഷ് ബാബു ഒരുക്കിയ തിരക്കഥയും എടുത്ത പറയേണ്ടതാണ്. ഗാനങ്ങൾ സിനിമയോട് വിളക്കിച്ചേർത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ആസ്വദിക്കാനല്ല, ആശയം കൈമാറാനാണ് അവ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഗോപി സുന്ദറാണ് സംഗീതം.  

സ്ത്രീകൾ തീർച്ചയായും കണ്ടിരിക്കേണ്ട സിനിമ എന്നല്ല, എല്ലാവരും കണ്ടിരിക്കേണ്ട സിനിമയാണ് ഒരുത്തി. കാരണം രാധാമണിയെ നിങ്ങൾ അറിയും. രാധാമണിയുടെ അവസ്ഥകൾ നിങ്ങൾക്ക് മനസ്സിലാവും. അത് അനുഭവിക്കാനാകും.

Oruthee (2022) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

‘Oruthee’ is not just a didactic tale of a victory over adversity, but rather an evocative and emotional journey of a woman who like thousands of others like her in the real world, steers steadfastly across hardships, uncertainty, emptiness and despair. It is an intricate theme that taps into a universally human condition and which even transcends across nation, gender and race.

What transpires in the latter half of V K Prakash’s ‘Oruthee’ might strike you as far from real, until you read about Soumya Babu from Kollam, Kerala and the fantastic story of her rise from an ordinary sales girl at a local shop to an inspirational figure much lauded on social media platforms for her extra ordinary act of courage that took the state by storm.

‘Oruthee’ narrates an account that is stranger than fiction of an indomitable struggle that a young woman puts up in the face of her assailants who appear way too domineering in comparison to her seemingly meek self.  It’s a film that is as much about the survival tactics of a woman driven to the brims of  devastation as it is about power and politics at work in a social milieu that appears ruthlessly self-centered.

Radhamani (Navya Nair) works as a conductor at the ferry service and yearns for her husband (Saiju Kurup) to be back from the Gulf. A graphic designer by profession, the man had ventured out into the Middle East along with thousands of middle class job seekers like him, and had ended up with a job as a painter and a broken arm.

Back home in Kerala, Radhamani accepts the terrible financial straits that her family is in, tends to her two kids and her mother-in-law and runs from pillar to post to make both ends meet. Optimistic to the core she manages her balancing act brilliantly well until her daughter is taken sick and admitted to the ICU, until she has huge hospital bills to pay and until her visit to the pawn shop reveals that a gold necklace that had been bought a few months back with some hard earned money from a reputed jewelry in town has more wax than real gold in it.

This is the central incident in ‘Oruthee’ that maneuvers the course of action, and along way,  the film offers a subtle, yet effectual commentary on what has been happening all around. The TV stations blare out live telecasts of a political coup that is being planned in the neighboring state, and Mega Thiruvathira dances bring in the festival season in the state with aplomb.

Parallel to this alternate elite world lies a universe where the rain and the sun truly matter to the people who scamper around  with weighty burdens bending their backs. Living in cloistered houses across the banks of a lake that sports skyscrapers at the other end, they dream of having a better living someday even as life keeps pulling them down further into the muck that they are knee deep embroiled in.

With morality and integrity being thrown to the winds by his senior officers, Sub Inspector of Police, Antony (Vinayakan) is one such soul lost in this big, bad world of malice. He is not one to be put down though, and wastes not a single opportunity that would let him hold his head high in uprightness and comes to Radhamani’s aid on finding her frantic pleas genuine.

When a biker makes off with her bag, Radhamani and her son Appu follow suit on their scooter, and what follows is a chase where she simply refuses to give up. Wading across a shallow pond after him, the mother-son duo run short of breath soon, yet still climbs steep mounts and wallows down  slick slopes after the thief, who is astounded at their persistence. Indeed a brilliant metaphor to ordinary woman power that ambles across jagged and bumpy lifescapes,  it holds up a beacon of hope in an era marked by uncertainty and gloom.

‘Oruthee’ belongs to Navya Nair, and I wonder if any other actor could have portrayed the helplessness,  the anguish and the desolation that Radhamani goes through with as much brilliance. Perhaps yes, but Navya brings in a relatability to the role with her unvarnished performance that is instantly appealing. It is such a pleasure to watch her in action yet again, and she is ably supported with a measured feat from Vinayakan and the rest of the actors.

കൊച്ചിയിൽ ഫെറി സർവ്വീസിൽ കണ്ടക്ടറായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയാണ് രാധാമണി. മക്കളും ഭർത്താവിന്റെ അമ്മയും അടങ്ങുന്ന ചെറിയ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വവും ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് ചുമലിലേറ്റുന്നവൾ, എല്ലായിടത്തും പ്രസരിപ്പോടെ ഓടിയെത്തുന്നവൾ. കുഞ്ഞുകുട്ടി പരാധീനതകൾക്കിടയിലും സന്തോഷത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കുന്ന രാധാമണിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ഒരു ദശാസന്ധിയിൽ ഒന്നിനു പിറകെ ഒന്നായി പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെത്തുകയാണ്. അഴിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്തോറും മുറുകുന്ന ആ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ പെട്ടുള്ള രാധാമണിയുടെ നെട്ടോട്ടമാണ് 'ഒരുത്തീ' പറയുന്നത്.

ഒരിടവേളയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം തിരിച്ചെത്തുമ്പോൾ, രണ്ടാമൂഴക്കാരിയുടെ പതർച്ചയോ ടെൻഷനോ ഒന്നും നവ്യയിൽ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നില്ല. വളരെ പക്വതയോടെയും പാകതയോടെയും കയ്യടക്കത്തോടെയും വീടും ജോലിയുമെല്ലാം ഒന്നിച്ച് കൊണ്ടുപോവുന്ന ഒരു സ്ത്രീയുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ നവ്യ സ്ക്രീനിൽ വരച്ചിടുന്നുണ്ട്. ഏറെ ശാരീരിക അധ്വാനം കൂടി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട കഥാപാത്രമാണ് രാധാമണി. ക്ലൈമാക്സിനു മുൻപുള്ള നവ്യയുടെ ചെയ്സിംഗ് സീനൊക്കെ ശ്വാസമടക്കി പിടിച്ചു മാത്രമേ പ്രേക്ഷകർക്ക് കണ്ടിരിക്കാനാവൂ.

പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായി എത്തുന്ന വിനായകനാണ് തിയേറ്ററിൽ കയ്യടി നേടുന്ന മറ്റൊരു താരം. സൂപ്പർ ഹീറോ പരിവേഷമൊന്നുമില്ലാതെ, വളരെ റിയലിസ്റ്റാക്കായി തന്നെ ഒരു പൊലീസുകാരന്റെ ജീവിതം വിനായകൻ സ്ക്രീനിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മുകുന്ദൻ, കെ പിഎസി ലളിത, സൈജു കുറുപ്പ്, സന്തോഷ് കീഴാറ്റൂർ, അരുണ്‍ നാരായണ്‍ എന്നിവരുടെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും മികവു പുലർത്തി. നവ്യയുടെ മകനായി അഭിനയിച്ച ആദിത്യനും പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ ഇഷ്ടം കവരും.

Oruthee Movie Review: Navya Nair, Vinayakan dominate in VK Prakash's tense, empowering drama

Navya Nair attends a lot of phone calls throughout VK Prakash’s new film Oruthee , based on an actual event. So many calls that I’ve lost count. Most of them are anxiety-inducing. A few bear good news. Then there is the third, the empowering kind, from an unlikely ally whose life becomes intertwined with hers. Oruthee is primarily the story of an intense ordeal that Radhamani (Navya) goes through. Eventually, it also becomes the story of an empathetic, stoic, and tough-as-nails cop (a brilliant Vinayakan dominating every scene he is in). The film opens with the latter. His involvement in Radhamani’s life comes at a very crucial juncture. This development also makes it a movie about two characters empowering each other. But let me first tell you about Navya’s terrific, well-timed comeback in what I would call one of VKP’s finest films.

A striking image from Oruthee has Radhamani’s back profile framed against a group of high rise apartments on the other side of the water body separating her home from them. It symbolises, in my mind, her impending battle with some powerful, influential forces. A ferry conductor like herself cannot take them on alone. After all, this is not a mass film where the woman spews fiery dialogues and single-handedly overpowers anyone who dared to mess with her.

But then, the vulnerable Radhamani gradually evolves into a woman who discovers reservoirs of strength deep within her. In three days, she goes through so much that by the time the film nears its conclusion, she musters enough courage to take on anyone, no matter how high their pedestals. When Vinayakan enters the picture and shakes things up -- in multiple applause-worthy scenes -- the film becomes much more fun.

It all starts with Radhamani’s daughter getting admitted for food poisoning, an opportunity to bring up the purity of food products that claim to be trustworthy. When hospital expenses begin to mount, she has to think of a fast solution. Meanwhile, her husband (Saiju Kurup) is nursing a fracture after an accident at his workplace in Dubai. He was her initial cause of concern, later overshadowed by her daughter’s situation. When a solution presents itself, things don’t turn out as easy as they initially seemed. This time, the purity of another product from a ‘trustworthy’ brand is suspected. “We have been in the business 75 years,” repeats a shady jewellery shop manager when she seeks compensation. 

VKP takes enough time to acquaint us with Radhamani’s personality in the film’s early portions. One might ask if the set-up needs that much time. How else would we know of Radhamani’s capabilities? Through the course of Oruthee, her face runs the gamut of emotions from worry to helplessness to frustration to anger.

If not for the intrusive background score, songs, or the occasional logic-devoid cinematic elements, one would’ve mistaken Oruthee for a documentary. Now it almost looks like one, considering how VKP and cinematographer Jimshi Khalid chose to shoot the daily routines of a working mother and her lower-middle-class lifestyle. Most notable is the handheld approach adopted to capture the urgent aspects of Radhamani’s life, sometimes with the appropriate use of silence.

 And Navya makes the nerve-wracking routines of Radhamani look so organic. These scenes recalled Will Smith’s multi-tasking from The Pursuit of Happyness . One minute, Radhamani is looking for something, the next, she is looking for something else. Now combine that with five other tasks. One particular moment recalled a day when my mother went through a similar ordeal. I asked myself how I would react if I were in her place. I would’ve probably collapsed under the overwhelming heaviness.   Perhaps Navya’s real-life experience of motherhood came in handy here. (One chase scene involving Radhamani and her son brought to mind the father and son from Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves .) You know that expression about some actors living their characters? That’s what you get here. I didn’t notice a single false note in Navya’s performance, except for a very minor detail. But it’s not that important because you are so caught up in this woman’s plight that you are more concerned about whether Radhamani would get what she wants.

Oruthee works because it has enough of the ingredient required for cinematic drama: The protagonist needs something, but one or more obstacles are in the way. Recently, Unni Mukundan dealt with multiple hindrances in Meppadiyan . Oruthee is relatively zippier, and I’m willing to overlook the minor flaws because the struggles of the protagonist is riveting.

Oruthee (2022) by VK Prakash is a surprisingly inviting underdog or David vs Goliath tale centered around a lower middle class woman, where Navya Nair makes a smashingly unforgettable comeback while delivering her best performance till date. Also, it was quite refreshing to see Vinayakan in a regular guy portrayal as a no-nonsense cop. Jimshi Khalid's excellent cinematography also helps a great deal in making it slick. Even if the film may feel a tad rushed and convenient towards the end, Navya Nair's revelatory evolution as a nuanced performer makes up for all those flaws. As Radhamani, the mother of two trying hard to meet the ends while her husband is abroad, she felt like a whole new actor in terms of her body language and dialogue delivery, like it was Navya Nair 2.0!

Easily, my favorite V. K. Prakash film yet. That chase scene gave me panic attack. And, about Navya Nair, what a terrific comeback this is! Vinayakan makes each and every badass moment count. One hell of a thriller. Damn, I missed this in theatre! Another gem of 2022, and would make a great double feature with  Meppadiyan .

Nothing much to write about, except it could have been so much better. Oruthee is by no means a bad movie. If only it was as good as it appeared in the heads of everyone attached to it.

Or maybe expectations killed this one for me.

Oruthee Trailer Talk: Navya Nair Returns To Screens In A Family Drama Set In Vypin

The trailer of Oruthee , set in and around the island of Vypin in Ernakulam, appears to be about an everyday woman who is put in an extra-ordinary tough situation. It begins in the form of a confession, with Navya Nair's character narrating an incident she witnessed. She talks about her NRI husband (Saiju Kurup) and the start of a mysterious event which is then cut mid sentence.

From the likes of it, it appears to be a major secret she is holding back, something that could ruffle many feathers. It also is unclear if Vinayakan, playing a cop, is a supporting or an antagonising figure in the story. When put in a tough space without support, Oruthee feels like a tale about the lone woman who has to fight against powers that be to protect her family. Overall, a trailer that hints at solid plot for a comeback for a much-loved actor (as Dhyan Sreenivasan would attest) to return with.

The film is being directed by VK Prakash and it also stars Vinayakan and Saiju Kurup. S Suresh Babu has written the thriller. VK Prakash's most recent release was the Samyukta Menon-starrer Erida , which also featured actor Nassar. According to the press release, it is said to be about family, love and overcoming personal worries.

As for Navya, this is her return to a Malayalam film after 2012's Scene Onnu Nammude Veedu.  Her most recent release though, was the Kannada remake Drishya 2 ,   where she reprised the character played by Meena in the Malayalam original.

From Balamani in her breakthrough film Nandanam (2002) to Radhamani in Oruthee , releasing on March 18, Navya Nair has travelled a long way, as a woman and actor.

Talking over the phone from Kochi, the articulate actor says she is happy to make her comeback after 2012 as the leading lady of Oruthee , a woman-centric film.  

Directed by VK Prakash, the film revolves around Radhamani, a conductor in a jhangar in Kochi. Her trials and tribulations, her dreams and the daily grind of a working woman form the crux of the film. “Radhamani’s husband in West Asia loses his job but she consoles her husband and faces life with an optimistic attitude. Radhamani is an everyday woman we see around us,” narrates Navya.

She adds that Oruthee was chosen because the character is realistic. “I have seen several women, including my mother, do a tightrope walk to try to do justice to the many roles that society expects of women. I am a good listener and observer and that helps me get into the skin of a character,” says the actor who has won two Kerala State Film awards for the best female actor for Nandanam , and Saira and Kanne Madanguka (2005).

Was it difficult to play the character on a moving jhangar? “Not at all. Shot over 25 days in Kochi, I had no difficulty at all in becoming Radhamani. In Jalolsavam (2003), I had to row a small country boat. That was not easy and I spent a week learning how to do that,” says Navya.

She hastens to add that in the case of cinema, it is teamwork that is behind the success of a film or a character. Every single team member matters. No film is ever one person’s effort, she believes. Oruthee unfolds over three days and Navya in a no-makeup role, shines in the trailer.

One of the frontline heroines in Malayalam cinema in the noughties and the first decade of the 22nd century, Navya had also made a mark in Tamil and Kannada.  Like many other heroines in Malayalam cinema, she took a break from films after her marriage in 2010.

“In those days, married women did not get leading roles. At best, they would get character roles. Cinema is my passion, not only a profession. I was not ready to compromise on my role and was willing to watch cinema from the sidelines,” she says.

The comeback

It was Manju Warrier’s comeback and success as one of the top heroines in Malayalam cinema that motivated Navya to resume acting. She was also encouraged by the sea change in themes, scripts and  characterisation of women that had taken place in Mollywood.

“Manju chechi proved that women don’t need to move away from acting after their marriage or be satisfied with roles that seldom do justice to their talent. There is space for women of all ages,” feels Navya.

She asserts that it was not viewers who decided that they did not want to see women of different ages in plum roles. It was a misconception that was fostered by the film industry.

“Yet, we must remember that there was a time in Malayalam cinema when veterans such as Sheela amma , Sharada amma and Jayabharathi amma called the shots. Films were planned around their dates. That was their stature as actors. We haven’t regained that space!”

Different approach

When she began listening to scripts, she realised that there were not many films written for women. That was when she got to read the script of Oruthee and she decided to essay Radhamani. She says with a laugh that Balamani was a naïve 16-year-old and Radhamani is a woman in her mid-thirties who has seen life. “I was 16 when I acted in Nandanam . I am 36 years now and naturally, there is a huge difference in my approach to my character and story,” she asserts.

Even when Navya  was not acting, she points out that she has not missed a single movie that was released in theatres or on OTT platforms. “I have kept myself up to date on all the movies that were released in Malayalam. Cinema, as I said, is my passion. I have also tried not to miss editions of the International Film Festival of Kerala,” says Navya. She has had the distinction of having two of her films screened as part of the festival in 2005.

The talented dancer, the winner of several prizes in the State schools youth festivals, plans to open a dance school in Kochi.

Moving on, she says direction and writing, she believes, are on the cards as many of her directors have told her that she would be able to do it. “It might happen but not any time now.”

Oruthee release date: When and where to watch Navya Nair’s thriller based on true events online

The movie, which is directed by VK Prakash, has Navya Nair and Vinayakan in pivotal roles

Navya Nair’s comeback Malayalam movie Oruthee, which also has Vinayakan in a pivotal role, released to mostly positive reviews in theatres on March 18. The VK Prakash directorial, which is scripted by Suresh Babu of Shikkar fame, revolves around a woman’s perseverance to not give up her fight against a system much bigger than her.

The film, which was among the better movies to hit theatres the past week, is expected to drop on OTT soon after its theatrical run. The film’s digital rights were bagged by Manorama Max almost two months ago.

Oruthee, which is based on a true incident, has Navya playing a boat conductor named Radhamani, whose husband is in the Middle East and hence she has to take care of her family. After her daughter is admitted to an expensive hospital, she decides to pawn her jewellery for money. But she soon discovers that she was cheated. In parallel to her struggles, the movie also follows the story of an upright police officer, played by Vinayakan, who steps up to help her.

The movie marked the State Award-winning actress’ comeback to Malayalam films after a gap of 10 years. Her last Malayalam film was Scene Onnu Nammude Veedu back in 2012. Navya, however, was part of the Kannada remakes of Drishyam and Drishyam 2, in which she played Meena’s role.

The actress was lauded for her role in Oruthee, which is a slow-burn thriller highlighting the problems that a middle-class woman faces in a span of three days. She won the Best Actress Award of JC Daniel Foundation for her role as Radhamani.

The filming of Oruthee was complete by March 2020, but due to the pandemic, the makers took exactly two years to release the movie in theatres. The film was also one of KPAC Lalitha’s last few movies.

ఆరుగురు స్నేహితుల కథ‌...

డొమినిక్ (జీను జోసెఫ్‌), జోషి(బీను), పీట‌ర్‌(రోనీ డేవిడ్ రాజ్‌), రాజీవ‌న్(నితిన్ జార్జ్‌) కాలేజీ ఫ్రెండ్స్‌. ఆర్గానిక్ ఫార్మింగ్ బిజినెస్ చేస్తుంటారు. పీట‌ర్‌, రాజీవ‌న్ ఫార్మ్ బాధ్య‌త‌లు చేప‌డితే డొమినిక్‌, జోషి సేల్స్ వ్య‌వ‌హారాలు చూస్తుంటారు. పైకి మిత్రులుగా న‌టిస్తోన్న న‌లుగురికి ఒక‌రిపై మ‌రొక‌రికి ద్వేషం ఉంటుంది. ఈ స్నేహితుల తోట‌లో పండిన ఆర్గానిక్‌ పంట‌ల‌ను అచాయ‌న్ అనే బిజినెస్‌మెన్ త‌క్కువ ధ‌ర‌కే కొంటుంటాడు. కురియ‌న్ (బాబురాజ్‌) రియ‌ల్ ఎస్టేట్ బిజినెస్‌లో చాలా న‌ష్ట‌పోతాడు.

క‌ర్ణాట‌క‌లోని ఓ అట‌వీ ప్రాంతాల్లో త‌క్కువ ధ‌ర‌కే 260 ఏక‌రాల భూమితో పాటు బ్రిటీష్ కాలం నాటి ఓ ప్యాలెస్‌ను కొంటాడు. దానిని అమ్మి అప్పులు తీర్చే దారి కోసం ఎదురుచూస్తుంటాడు. అది త‌న భూమి అని తెలియ‌కుండా త‌న కాలేజీ స్నేహితులైన‌ డొమినిక్‌, జోషి, పీట‌ర్‌, రాజీవ‌న్‌ల‌కు ఆ భూమిని అమ్మాల‌ని కురియ‌న్ ప్లాన్ చేస్తాడు. అక్క‌డ కూడా ఫార్మ్ బిజినెస్ చేస్తే కోట్ల‌లో లాభాలు సంపాదించ‌వ‌చ్చ‌వ‌ని స్నేహితుల‌ను న‌మ్మిస్తాడు.

ఈ ప్లాన్‌లో ఇరుంబ‌న్ (చెంబ‌న్ వినోద్ జోస్‌) కూడా భాగం అవుతాడు. ఆ భూమిని చూడ‌టానికి న‌లుగురు స్నేహితుల‌తో పాటు కురియ‌న్‌, ఇరుంబ‌న్ అట‌వీ ప్రాంతంలోని ప్యాలెస్‌లో దిగుతారు. అదే రాత్రి కొంద‌రు అప‌రిచితులు వారిపై ఎటాక్ చేసి డొమినిక్‌, రాజీవ్‌ల‌ను చంపేస్తారు.

ఆ ఆప‌రిచితుల నుంచి కురియ‌న్‌, ఇరుంబ‌న్‌తో పాటు మిగిలిన వాళ్లు ఎలా బ‌య‌ట‌ప‌డ్డారు? ఆ స్నేహితుల‌ను చంప‌డానికి వ‌చ్చిన అగంత‌కులు ఎవ‌రు? కురియ‌న్ అండ్ గ్యాంగ్‌పై ఆ అప‌రిచితులు ప‌గ‌ను పెంచుకోవ‌డానికి కార‌ణం ఏమిట‌న్న‌దే కాళ‌రాత్రి మూవీ క‌థ‌.

హాలీవుడ్‌లో పాపుల‌ర్‌...

హాలీవుడ్‌లో స‌ర్వైవ‌ల్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ చాలా పాపుల‌ర్ జాన‌ర్‌. ట్రిప్ కోసం కొంద‌రు స్నేహితులు అడ‌విలో అడుగుపెట్ట‌డం, వారిని చంప‌డానికి ఓ సీరియ‌ల్ కిల్ల‌ర్‌ వెంటాడ‌టం అనే కాన్సెప్ట్‌తో వారానికో సినిమా వ‌స్తూనే ఉంటుంది. ఈ స‌ర్వైవ‌ల్ మూవీస్ క‌థ చాలా వ‌ర‌కు ఒకేలా ఉంటుంది.

కానీ కిల్ల‌ర్ నుంచి హీరోహీరోయిన్లు ఎలా త‌ప్పించుకుంటార‌న్న‌ది ఎంత గ్రిప్పింగ్‌గా రాసుకుంటే క‌థ అంత ర‌క్తి క‌డుతుంది. మైండ్‌బ్లోయింగ్ ట్విస్ట్‌ లు, ట‌ర్న్‌ల‌తో ఇలా కూడా జ‌రుగుతుందా అని ఆడియెన్ అనుకునేలా స‌ర్‌ప్రైజ్ చేయాలి. అప్పుడే ఈ స‌ర్వైవ‌ల్ మూవీస్ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి.

సేమ్ ఫార్ములా...

ఈ సింపుల్ పాయింట్‌ను రెండు గంట‌ల్లో చెప్ప‌డానికి ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు అష్ట‌క‌ష్టాలు ప‌డ్డాడు. సినిమాను సీరియ‌ల్‌గా సాగ‌దీశాడు. సినిమా ఆరంభంలో వ‌చ్చే సీన్స్ ఆర్గానిక్ ఫార్మింగ్ బిజినెస్ క్లాస్‌లా ఉంటుంది. స్నేహితుల మ‌ధ్య గొడ‌వ‌లు, ఒక‌రిని మ‌రొక‌రు మోసం చేస్తూ వేసే ఎత్తుల్లో ఆస‌క్తి లోపించింది.

కిల్ల‌ర్స్ నుంచి ఫ్రెండ్స్ గ్యాంగ్ త‌ప్పించుకునేసీన్స్ సీరియ‌ల్స్‌ను త‌ల‌పిస్తాయి. ఆయుధాలు ప‌ట్టుకొని కిల్ల‌ర్స్ ఇళ్లు మొత్తం వెతుకుతుంటారు...వారిని దొర‌క్కుండా హీరో గ్యాంగ్ ద‌క్కుంటారు. ఇవే సీన్స్ రిపీట్‌చేస్తూ క్లైమాక్స్ వ‌ర‌కు క‌థ‌ను సాగ‌దీస్తూ వెళ్లారు. ఓ మ‌లుపుతో సినిమాను ఎండ్ చేసి సీక్వెల్ అనౌన్స్‌చేశాడు.

హీరోలు లేరు...

సినిమాలో హీరోలు అంటూ ప్ర‌త్యేకంగా ఎవ‌రూ లేరు. అన్ని పాత్ర‌ల‌కు స‌మానంగా ఇంపార్టెన్స్ ఉంటుంది. ఇరుంబ‌న్‌గా మాస్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో చెంబ‌న్ వినోద్ జోస్ క‌నిపించాడు కురియ‌న్‌గా పాజిటివ్‌గా క‌నిపించే నెగెటివ్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో బాబురాజ్ న‌ట‌న ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. మిగిలిన వారి న‌ట‌న ఓకే అనిపిస్తుంది.తెలుగు డ‌బ్బింగ్ బాగుంది. నిడివి రెండు గంట‌లే అయినా ఎక్కువే అనిపిస్తుంది.
