My Best Friend Essay: 500 Words

Introduction.

‘A man is known by the company he keeps’, Says a proverb. Hence one needs to be very careful in selecting friends. As Shakespeare has pointed out in his play ‘As You Like It’, ‘Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly’. Fair-weather friends are plenty; true and reliable friends are few and far between.

My Best Friend

I have many friends in my school , but most of them are only so-called friends. They are not dependable. Out of them, only Arvind is my true and sincere friend. He is my best friend. I am, indeed, proud of his friendship.

Arvind is the only son of a district court judge. Even then he is very humble and modest. His financial position is sound and enviable. Yet prosperity has not turned him proud and rude. He is not puffed with pride.

His Qualities

Arvind has all the fine qualities of head and heart. He is tall, healthy, and handsome. He is affectionate, kind, sociable, and extremely helpful. He is a good sportsman on the playground and an inviable scholar in the classroom.  All praise, honour, and admiration sit lightly on him. He is not swollen-headed. He is all the more modest and polite because of them.

He is a hard-working boy. He is kind and compassionate. His heart melts at the sight of poverty, sickness and human suffering of any kind. In order to serve the suffering humanity selflessly, he has decided to become a doctor and set up his medical practice in some rural Adivasi area. He often says that the selfless service of the poor is the true service of God.

Our Friendship

I am so proud that I have such an ideal friend like Arvind. Because of his company and rare friendship, my outlook, attitude, and behaviour have been positively influenced. His friendship has given a new, healthy dimension to my life and I, now, look forward to a happy and bright future.

Arvind is indeed, the architect of my life and the moulder of my destiny in the right direction. He is my friend, guide, and philosopher. I envy myself for having such an ideal friend.

My Best Friend Essay 500 Words

My best friend’s name is Siddhart Jadhav. We have been friends since class 7th A in Alfred Nobel High School. We both studied in the same school in childhood but not in the same class as our sections are different. Later that time, all the students from all the sections are sorted according to the previous academics’ percentages and grades and separated into four different sections. Due to this separation, I met Siddhart in the 7th A, and we became friends at that time. Later, time goes by, and our friendship bond becomes stronger, and we become best friends with each other and spend most of our time together in school, tuition, and extra classes. We also sit on the same bench in the classroom.

Our likes and dislikes are also common, and we also love to dance and sing. In every annual gathering and other function that is held in our school, we both participate and give our best performances. We never wanted to win the competitions, our intention was to enjoy the gathering. Some of our school teachers don’t like our togetherness and friendship, but some of them loved and always blessed our strong bonded friendship to stay longer and longer. Siddharth and I always talked in the running classroom, and most of the time, our teacher also punished both of us by standing outside the classroom. We always tried to irritate the lecturer in the chemistry lectures by asking tons of doubts and questions. We eat tiffin boxes sitting on the last benches.

Apart from this naughtiness, Siddharth is very punctual, and he is never late for coming to school and attending classes. He always completes his homework at a given time and being with him, I also start studying very well and completing my homework on time. He keeps his books and copies very clean. His writing is very nice and encourages me to write cleanly and clearly for better understanding. My parents also compliment my friend that being with him, I also become responsible and a good student.

Siddharth and I are both excellent football players and athletes. When we both start playing the football game, the opponent team never wins. Our sports teacher always motivates us and tells us that we will become good football players one day. My parents also know Siddharth very much, and they like his pleasant behavior. Feel free when Siddharth and I stay together, whether for playing games, video games, study, or for going out to have fun with other classmates. Siddharth is my best friend, my first friend. He is the one who offers me help in my studies when I need it, supports me and always shows love to me, defends me, and stands by my side in any situation no matter what.

In academics, my best friend, Siddharth, is chosen to be awarded the best student of the year in the 10th class. He is one of the brilliant students of our school and also won many of the competitions that were held in school. He is like a well-wisher, and I always enjoyed his company. He, too, feels secure and relieved by spending time with me as well. He is like a problem-solving friend to me. I never wanted to lose him in my life.

How To Write a My Best Friend Essay

' data-src=

Definition: What Is a My Best Friend Essay?

Write about what you know is sage advice often given to fledgling writers. And what do many of our young students know more about than their trusty sidekick, who is a constant presence through thick and thin?

A My Best Friend Essay is precisely what it sounds like; an essay the student writes that is focused on their closest pal’s endearing attributes (and otherwise).

However, the My Best Friend Essay is more than just a chance for students to wax lyrical about their BFFs. It is an authentic opportunity for students to hone their composition skills and exercise their creative flair.

All this while talking about one of their best mate – not bad!

STRUCTURING a My Best Friend Essay

This is an essay. It says so right there in the title! Just how complex the structure of a student’s essay is will depend on essential factors such as age and ability. However, the 5-paragraph essay structure is a perfect framework for this type of composition.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the 5-paragraph essay is that it is easily modified to differentiate between lower or higher ability students by simply adjusting the number of paragraphs. The essay will still contain the same essential elements of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, regardless of how long it is.

The 5-paragraph (or hamburger) essay is a craft in itself and much too broad a topic to go into at length. Check out our complete guide here if you want more detail on this handy essay template.

Briefly though, in essence, the 5-paragraph essay comprises three parts:

  • The Introduction : The opening paragraph will orient the reader to the topic of the essay, in this case, by introducing the show’s star, the best friend .
  • The Body : In the traditional 5-paragraph essay, this makes up three of the five paragraphs. In this type of essay, the student will use these paragraphs to flesh out the main reasons they value their friend, or (at a more advanced level) they will tell a story about them that illustrates why they are the student’s best friend.
  • The Conclusion : In the conclusion, the student can sum up why their friend holds the hallowed title of ‘best’. Or, at a higher level, the student can use the final paragraph of their essay to look forward to the future of their relationship with their best friend.

My Best Friend Essay Story

While we are teaching a short essay on my best friend’, it can also be approached from another angle, i.e., as a nonfiction story.

While the clearcut essay format may be eminently suitable for younger students, you may wish to revisit this genre with older students, this time emphasising storytelling.

In this creative nonfiction approach, students can merge the essay format with storytelling elements such as character, setting, central conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Constructing their best friend composition in this manner allows students to work on structuring a nonfiction text. Simultaneously, it offers them a chance to develop their creative flair.

My Best Friend in 10 Lines

Another approach particularly well-suited to younger students is the my best friend essay 10 lines format.

This helps younger students get writing by giving them a clear target to aim for, which makes planning easy.

However, you can still introduce the three elements of the 5-paragraph essay here. As students list the points they want to make in their 10 lines, they can be encouraged to group these into introduction, body, and conclusion sections.

For example, a plan might look like this:

A ‘My Best Friend in 10 Lines’ Plan

Introduction

Line 1: My friend’s name.

Line 2: What she looks like.

Line 3: Where she is from/her family.

Line 4: What friendship means to me.

Line 5: How we met.

Line 6: The kindest thing she has ever done.

Line 7: The funniest thing she has ever done.

Line 8: My absolute favorite thing about her.

Line 9: Restate why she is my best friend.

Line 10: How I see our future together.

To complete their 10-line ode to their friend, the student simply builds proper sentences around each of these (or similar) ideas.

More on Planning a My Best Friend Composition

As we can see in the sample plan above, the planning process is relatively straightforward when the 5-paragraph essay structure serves as a framework. However, we may want to take things up a notch for students of a higher ability.

A good, old-fashioned brainstorming session is an excellent starting point for the student. They can list their favorite memories and their friend’s best features.

While younger students may inevitably write something of a hagiography (a biography of a saint!), older students may want to present a more realistic portrait of their ever-present amigo.

Likewise, if the student is undertaking their composition in a narrative nonfiction form, they’ll need to map out the narrative arc of their story at the planning stage.

As with any story, the conflict will serve as the engine of the narrative. However, this conflict does not have to take the form of a problem between the writer and the best friend. After all, this text is more likely to be something of a love letter than a letter of complaint. Instead, the conflict is more likely to take the form of a problem or a challenge faced by the writer and their pal together.

Whether or not the student’s text will take a full-blown story form, true-to-life anecdotes will bring life to the student’s writing. The planning process is the perfect time to dump these onto paper, even if they don’t all make it into the final draft.

How to Start a MY Best Friend Essay

As with most text types, fiction or nonfiction, the writer will want to grab the reader’s attention from the outset. An effective way of doing this is by using a hook.

How to Hook The Reader

The student writer has many methods available to grasp the reader’s attention. While some of these will only be suitable for more advanced students, most can be adapted with a bit of effort for our younger writers.

  • Start in the Middle of the Action

Technically known as, In Medias Res , this technique involves opening the story in the middle of a moment of dramatic tension with the exposition filled in later. This type of wizardry is probably best reserved for the more skilled student writer.

  • Make a Bold Promise at the Outset

The promise of a big payoff can undoubtedly catch a reader’s eye and draw them in, but the student-writer must follow through later in the text. For less experienced students, you may want to offer a writing prompt to help out here. For example,

My best friend Jack is truly one of a kind, but just how special he is wasn’t clear to me until the day a fire broke out in our school.

Students can quickly adapt such prompts by changing the event mentioned to their own circumstances.

  • Create a Sense of Intimacy

Another way to grasp the reader’s interest is to create a sense of intimacy right from the start. This can be achieved by addressing the reader directly in a conversational tone. Students should use informal language and approach writing their text as if they were speaking to a close friend – this is perfect for this writing style.

  • Open with an Anecdote

Another way to create interest (and a sense of intimacy) is to open up with an interesting anecdote about the friend. Students can select an interesting or humorous story to use as a carrot to entice the reader in. The student could substitute an exciting or amusing fact in shorter pieces for a full-blown anecdote.

  • Begin with a Quotation

Quotes are a great way to garner attention. There are many online repositories of inspirational quotes on every topic under the sun where students can find a golden nugget of friendship-based wisdom to open their masterpieces. They must simply type in keywords such as ‘famous’, ‘quotes’, and ‘friendship’ to uncover a smorgasbord of well-articulated wisdom for students to choose from. However, students should ensure the sentiment expressed in their selected quote ties into the type of friendship described in their work.

Working the Body

As we stated earlier in this article, the 5-paragraph essay structure, or the narrative writing arc, lays out a suitable template for the student-writer to work their way through the body of their text. However, it’s worth pointing out five areas where a little attention can significantly impact.

  • Get Specific

The devil’s in the details. The more specific the student is in their writing, the more effectively they will communicate with the reader.

Encourage students to be as precise as possible in their descriptions. A thesaurus is an excellent tool to help students find just the right word for the job.

  • Vary Sentence Length

Often, emergent writers rely on the same couple of simple sentence structures in their writing. This soon makes the writing monotonous for the reader; if they continue to read, it is only with effort that they will finish the student’s work.

Variety is not only the spice of life but also the spice of good writing. Encourage students to vary their sentence structures and alternate between long and short sentences to diversify the rhythm of their writing and evoke interest on the reader’s part.

  • Use Dialogue

Weaving dialogue into a my best friend essay text is a great way to bring colour and variety to a student’s writing. It also allows the student to practice punctuating dialogue – an essential skill!

Students will need to learn to listen carefully if they are to be able to write how people actually speak. Encouraging them to read their dialogue aloud is an effective way to check if it rings true.

  • Incorporate Literary Devices

Though this is undoubtedly a nonfiction text, it has firm roots in creative writing too. Students should incorporate some of the literary techniques and devices that we’d more commonly associate with poetry and fiction writing to add colour, creativity, and imagination to their writing.

For example, for younger students, physical descriptions of their BFF provide the perfect opportunity to introduce similes and hyperbole. Don’t be afraid to get comical here; writing should be fun, after all.

Does their friend have a big nose? How big? As big as an elephant’s trunk, perhaps?

Just make sure students avoid being too mean or poking fun at areas too sensitive for their friends.

It is easy to differentiate different abilities by challenging stronger students to use more complex literary devices in their work. Zoomorphism anyone?

  • Evoke the Five Senses

Emergent writers often display a bias towards only using the sense of sight in their descriptions. To bring their writing up a notch, encourage your students to employ all five senses in their writing.

By evoking the sense of hearing, smell, taste, and touch in their work, students will help their writing to come alive in the reader’s imagination.

WRAPPING THINGS Up

In a regular 5-paragraph essay, the concluding paragraph is usually the time to summarize the main arguments and drive home the thesis statement one more time. Obviously, things are a little bit different in a “my best friend essay.”

Of course, students can take the opportunity to revisit and restate the main reasons why their best friend holds the best-friend-championship belt. Still, there is a more artistic way to use their composition’s final paragraph.

Ask students to think about their friendship and where they see it in five, ten, twenty, or even forty years.

Undoubtedly, for younger students, in particular, this may be a bit of a challenge, but it can be a fun thought experiment too. Students can pose themselves questions to help, such as:

  • Will we be neighbours?
  • Will we work together?
  • Will our children go to school together? Etc.

Taking a tentative step into the possibilities of the future can make for an impactful ending.

Friendship Sample Essay in 200 words

Friendship is something exceptional. Whenever life gets rough, one thing that we can always rely on is our friendship. We know that we have our friends to support us through the tough times in life. Not only that, friendship is such a deep-rooted emotion that even when we don’t share what we are feeling at the same moment, just by looking at our faces, our friends can figure out that something is bothering us. And they, just by having a thoughtful talk with us, have the strength to make all the bothering go away in a snap. Such is the power of friendship. It’s more than meets the eye. However, there are times when we have those life tests that make us reach our limits and test us through thick and thin.

Everything in life isn’t always smooth and happy, there are phases when even friends get into a fight with each other, but when they come out of that situation with their friendship still intact, then that bonding reaches new heights of strength.

If you have deep friendships with people, always be grateful to god for that, because not every bond of friendship lasts forever. Those people who have friends who last a lifetime are truly blessed because friendship truly is beautiful.

Introduction:

Friendship is considered as one of the treasures that anyone can possess. God has given us the liberty to choose friends because they are for our lifetime. It is quite normal for our parents and siblings to love us because they are our own blood but a friend is someone who is initially a stranger and then takes his/her place above all the other relations. Friendship is nothing but pure love without any expectations.

Role of a Friend:

True friends share and support each other even during the toughest of times. A true friend is one who feels happy for our success, who feel sad for our failures, fight with us for silly things and hugs us the next second, gets angry on us when we do any mistakes. Friendship is all about having true friends who can understand us without the need for us to speak.

Conclusion:

Friendship is very essential for a happy life. Even a two-minute chat with a friend will make us forget our worries. That is the strength of friendship.

Friendship is a divine relationship, which is defined by neither blood nor any other similarity. Friends are those you can choose for yourself in spite of the difference you both have from each other. A good friend in need will do wonders in your life, whenever you are in need of self-realization, upbringing your confidence and more.

Friendship serves you best not only in your happiest moments but also when you feel low in emotions. A life without a good friend is not at all complete and an emptiness will be felt all the time you think of sharing your emotion that can’t be told to anyone else.

Honesty and Patience in Friendship:

To maintain and keep going with a good deep friendship, honesty is the most important factor. You should choose a person who can be cent percent honest with you in all perspective like emotions, decision making, etc. Trustworthy friendship will help you to take better decisions and choose a better path for your future well-being.

Tolerance and patience with each other are another important characteristics of long-lasting friendship. Accepting the differences, friends should be able to be with each other in all situations. As a friend, the person should lead the other to success by being a motivation and criticize the person if they choose the wrong path.

Friendship will give you sweet and happy memories that can be cherished for a lifetime and if you succeed in maintaining that precious relation, then you are the luckiest person in this world. Love and care for each other will cherish the relationship and helps the person to appreciate each thing done without any fail.

Of all the different relations which we indulge in, friendship is considered to be the purest of them all. Friendship is the true confluence of souls with like minded attitude that aids in seamless conversation and the best of times. It is believed that a person who doesn’t have any friend lives one of the toughest lives.

The Desire to Belong:

Each one of us have been so programmed that we need a companion even if it’s not romantic, someone just to tag along. There are several definitions of friendship and it is upon you as to how you believe your relation to be. Friendship can happen when you are simply sharing a bowl of food with a person day after day. It can be expressed in the way you silently care for someone even when they may not be aware of your existence.

The Little Moments that Matter:

It is giving up the little things you love dearly for the sake of someone you cherish a great deal. Friendship often refers to the little moments of senseless laugh you two share when the rest of the world starts to look bleak. It is to know what your friend needs and being there for them even when the rest of the world has turned their back towards them.

Friendship is the kind of relation which sometimes even exceeds the realms of love because it is all about giving without even once bothering to sense what you shall get back. Every time spent is special because when you are with friends, you don’t feel the blues!

The Bottom-Line:

Of course the definition of friendship is going to vary a great deal from one person to another. Types of Friendships:

According to Aristotle’s Nichomachean ethics, there are three types of friendships. The friendships are based on three factors i.e. utility, pleasure and goodness. The first type of friendship is based on utility and has been described as a friendship whereby both parties gain from each other.

This type of friendship is dependent on the benefits and that is what keeps the friendship going. This type of friendships do not last long because it dissolves as soon as the benefits are outsourced or when other sources are found outside the friendship. The friendship was invented for trade purposes because when two people with opposite things that depend on each other re put together, trade is maximized.

The second type of friendship is based on pleasure. This is described as friendship in which two individuals are drawn to each other based on desires of pleasure and is characterized by passionate feelings and feelings of belonging. This type of friendship can ether last long or is short-lived depending on the presence of the attraction between the two parties.

The third type of friendship is based on goodness. In this friendship, the goodness of people draw them to each other and they usually have the same virtues. The friendship involves loving each other and expecting goodness. It takes long to develop this kind of friendship but it usually lasts longest and is actually the best kind of friendship to be in. the importance of such a friendship is the social support and love.

In conclusion, friendships are important in the lives of individuals. Trust builds and sustains friendships. The different types of friendships are important because they provide benefits and social support. Friendships provide a feeling of belonging and dependence. The durability of friendships is dependent on the basis of its formation and the intention during the formation. Friendships that last long are not based on materialistic gain, instead, they are based on pure emotion.

Friendship is an emotion of care, mutual trust, and fondness among two persons. A friend might be a work-mate, buddy, fellow student or any individual with whom we feel an attachment.

In friendship, people have a mutual exchange of sentiments and faith too. Usually, the friendship nurtures more amongst those people who belong to a similar age as they possess the same passions, interests, sentiments, and opinions. During the school days, kids who belong to the similar age group have a common dream about their future and this makes them all of them get closer in friendship.

Friendship is established over the sacrifice, love, faith, and concern of mutual benefit. True Friendship is a support and a blessing for everybody. All those males and females who have true and genuine friends are very lucky really.

Friendship can simply be defined as a form of mutual relationship or understanding between two people or more who interact and are attached to one another in a manner that is friendly. A friendship is a serious relationship of devotion between two or more people where people involved have a true and sincere feeling of affection, care and love towards each other devoid of any misunderstanding and without demands.

Primarily friendship happens between people that have the same sentiments, feelings and tastes. It is believed that there is no limit or criteria for friendship. All of the different creed, religion, caste, position, sex and age do not matter when it comes to friendship even though friendships can sometimes be damaged by economic disparity and other forms of differentiation. From all of these, it can be concluded that real and true friendship is very possible between people that have a uniform status and are like-minded.

A lot of friends we have in the world today only remain together in times of prosperity and absence of problems but only the faithful, sincere and true friends remain all through the troubles, times of hardships and our bad times. We only discover who our bad and good friends are in the times where we don’t have things going our way.

Most people want to be friends with people with money and we can’t really know if our friends are true when we have money and do not need their help, we only discover our true friends when we need their help in terms of money or any other form of support. A lot of friendships have been jeopardised because of money and the absence or presence of it.

Sometimes, we might face difficulty or crises in our friendships because of self-respect and ego. Friendships can be affected by us or others and we need to try to strike a balance in our friendships. For our friendship to prosper and be true, we need satisfaction, proper understanding and a trustworthy nature. As true friends, we should never exploit our friends but instead do our utmost best to motivate and support them in doing and attaining the very best things in life.

The true meaning of friendship is sometimes lost because of encounters with fake friends who have used and exploited us for their own personal benefits. People like this tend to end the friendship once they get what they want or stab their supposed friends in the back just to get what they think is best for them. Friendship is a very good thing that can help meet our need for companionship and other emotional needs.

In the world we live in today, it is extremely difficult to come across good and loyal friends and this daunting task isn’t made any easier by the lie and deceit of a lot of people in this generation. So, when one finds a very good and loyal important, it is like finding gold and one should do everything to keep friends like that.

The pursuit of true friendship Is not limited to humans, we can as well find good friends in animals; for example, it is a popular belief that dogs make the best friends. It is very important to have good friends as they help us in times and situations where we are down and facing difficulties. Our true friends always do their best to save us when we are in danger and also provide us with timely and good advice. True friends are priceless assets in our lives, they share our pains and sorrow, help provide relief to us in terrible situations and do their best to make us happy.

Friends can both be the good or the bad types. Good friends help push us on the right path in life while on the other hand, bad friends don’t care about us but only care about themselves and can lead us into the wrong path; because of this, we have to be absolutely careful when choosing our friends in this life.

Bad friends can ruin our lives completely so we have to be weary of them and do our best to avoid bag friends totally. We need friends in our life that will be there for us at every point in time and will share all of our feeling with us, both the good and bad. We need friends we can talk to anytime we are feeling lonely, friends that will make us laugh and smile anytime we are feeling sad.

Picking the right friend is somewhat troublesome task however it is extremely important. In the event that for instance a couple of our dear friends are engaged with negative behaviour patterns, for example, smoking, drinking and taking drugs, at some point or another we will be attracted to their bad habits as well. This is the reason behind why it is appropriate to settle on an appropriate decision with regards to making friends.

Genuine friendship is truly a gift delighted in by a couple. The individuals who have it ought to express gratitude toward God for having genuine pearls in their lives and the individuals who don’t have a couple of good friends ought to always take a stab at better approaches to anchor great friends. No organization is superior to having a friend close by in the midst of need. You will stay cheerful in your one-room flat on the off chance that you are surrounded by your friends; then again, you can’t discover satisfaction even in your estate in the event that you are far away from others.

Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

Essay 2: Unforgettable Experience with My Friends

My friends are the greatest blessing I’ve ever received! Last summer, we decided to take a break from everyday life and sneak away into nature. We all loaded up on camping supplies – tents, food you name it – before setting off for our adventure in the woods. It was an unforgettable experience that none of us will soon forget!

After a long day of fun and exploration, our group found ourselves huddled around the campfire. We swapped stories and shared plenty of laughs as we cooked marshmallows to perfection over the crackling flames! Plus, who can resist hot chocolate on a chilly evening? Needless to say, it was one for the books – an unforgettable night that I’ll cherish forever.

We kicked off the morning with a plunge into icy lake waters, but nothing could dampen our enthusiasm for this special adventure. With sun-kissed faces and hearts full of happy memories, we departed – each one looking forward to many more days just like this!

Essay 3: The Last Time I Saw My Friends

It was an unforgettable party night with my crew! We celebrated the occasion with dinner and karaoke. All of a sudden there was a pandemic. Dinner is forever etched in our memory as a special time that we all share.

Then everything changed. A pandemic hit and we were all stuck at home. We had to cancel all plans and meetings. It was hard not being able to see my friends, but I kept in touch with them through social media and video calls.

We will meet again when the situation improves. I can’t wait to see my friends and catch up on everything that has happened to her this past year. I miss her.

Essay 4: An Adventure Trip with My Friends

Last summer, I went on an adventure trip with my friends. We decided to take a road trip to explore the countryside. We rented a van and packed up. We were so excited to start our journey.

I had a great time hiking, exploring new places, and enjoying the beauty of nature. It was the perfect mix of adventure, fun and friendship. We clicked lots of pictures, played games, and sang songs around the campfire in the evenings.

On the last day, we exchanged presents and thanked each other for making wonderful friends in our lives. Traveling was not just about having fun. It was about creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.

In summary, an adventure trip with friends is one of life’s most beautiful experiences. It helps you relax, reconnect with nature, and strengthen your bond with your friends. I am blessed to have wonderful friends who always inspire me to explore new horizons and make the most of life.

Friends are the most important part of our lives. They are the ones who stand by us through thick and thin, and we can always count on them to be there for us. I am lucky to have such amazing friends in my life, and I am grateful for each and every one of them.

My friends are my support system, and they are always there to cheer me up when I am feeling down. We share many memories together, from fun nights out to heart-to-heart conversations over coffee. No matter what we are doing, we always have a great time together.

One of the reasons I love my friends so much is that they accept me for who I am. They never judge me, and they are always there to offer a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. We may have our differences, but we always find a way to work through them.

Another reason I love my friends is that they make me a better person. They inspire me to be my best self, and they encourage me to pursue my dreams. I am constantly learning from them, and I know that I would not be where I am today without their love and support.

In conclusion, I love my friends more than words can express. They have brought so much joy and happiness into my life, and I am truly blessed to have them. I look forward to creating many more memories with them in the future and am grateful for the wonderful gift of their friendship.

Essay On My True Friend And Me

  • Post category: Essay
  • Reading time: 4 mins read

I study in a class of sixty boys and girls. I talk, help and play with all my classmates. However, Shawn is my true and trustworthy friend. As he sits just beside me, we are classroom neighbors . Over the last two years, we have become very close friends . We go to school together and we come home together. We both are almost together for the most part of the day. I am rarely without him on the playground.

Although we are so close friends, we are very different from each other in various respects. Shawn is rather shy and quiet. He likes to stay away from crowds and does not like to talk much. Sometimes I crack jokes but they often fail to make him laugh. He loves to study in order to bring good grades. He is a studious student. He has a good habit of reading. Whenever he gets time and chance, he starts reading. He is a well-behaved and disciplined boy. He always stands first in class.

My best friend Shawn has so many good qualities, but one cannot call him sociable. He likes to remain aloof. However, he definitely enjoys my company. Maybe I am his only friend. He is a thin boy who is physically very active and energetic. As far as my physique goes, I am taller and a little fatter than Shawn.

Compared to him I am noisy. I like to talk all the time. I like to eat different kinds of food. I like to laugh long and loud, especially when there is something humorous. Although I am not as intelligent as Shawn is, I always try to keep a balance between studies and recreation. I take Shawn’s help in my studies, especially in mathematics. He is a genius in mathematics.

Although we are different in various respects, we enjoy each other’s company. For us, friendship comes first. We have always stayed together in happy and difficult times. One may often find us quarreling, debating, or even almost fighting to prove our point. However, every quarrel brings us closer. Certainly, I can say that having a true, honest, and helpful friend like Shawn is a blessing.

essay on me and my friend

Essay Details:

Essay text:

An acquaintance is someone whose name I know, who I see every now and then, who I probably have something in common with and who I feel comfortable around. It’s a person that I can invite to my home and share things with. But they are people who I don’t share my life with, whose actions sometimes I don’t understand because I don’t know enough about them. On the other hand, a friend is someone I love. Not that I am “in love” with them, but I care about them and I think about them when they are not there. The people I am reminded of when I see something they might like, and I know this because I know them so well...

Dear Abby

Dear Abby: I think my husband is cheating on me with his male best friend

A group of people holding hands

DEAR ABBY: During my entire 40-year marriage, I have wondered if my husband is bisexual. He met his friend “Ernie” around the same time he met me. My husband has always had female friends as well as Ernie. When he came home late, I’d accuse him of having affairs with his female co-workers.

We have stayed together, although there have been a lot of arguments. Years ago, my brother-in-law went golfing with my husband and Ernie. My brother-in-law told me my problem wasn’t another woman — it was a man. When I asked why he thought that, he said my husband and Ernie were in their own little world. He said he wasn’t jealous of their friendship, but it was just his opinion.

To cut to the chase, not long ago, my husband and three other friends went on a golf trip. There was a king-size bed in the master bedroom, a second bedroom with two queen-size beds, and a sofa sleeper. I asked my husband about the sleeping arrangements, and he said one slept on the couch, one in the room with two queen beds, and he and Ernie shared the king-size bed.

When I asked what the other guys thought about the two of them sleeping in the same bed he yelled, “I don’t care what they thought!” I said, “And it appears you don’t care what your wife thinks either.”

My husband has always said, “There isn’t another woman. You know I love you.” He has always denied being bi. He makes me feel like I’m crazy. Please tell me what you think. — FINALLY FED UP IN DELAWARE

DEAR FED UP: For two men to share a bed when there is another option is, in my opinion, questionable. Never having met your husband, I hesitate to state whether he is or isn’t cheating on you with Ernie. Being bisexual does not make a person an adulterer. If he were to confirm your suspicion that he is bisexual, would it change your longtime marriage? THAT, my friend, is the $64,000 question.

DEAR ABBY: I’m sure I am not alone on this subject. Occasionally, when I’m in a restaurant, the mall, the grocery store, etc., I’ll run into a former co-worker, former classmate, someone I met at a past gathering, etc., and in the moment, I cannot recall their name. This is especially embarrassing when my spouse or a friend is with me and I can’t introduce the person.

Sometimes, when someone is with me and I see an acquaintance before they see me, I’ll make a detour to avoid the embarrassment of blanking on their names. If I’m alone, I have no problem conversing with the individual even if I can’t recall a name. My problem is those embarrassing introductions. Any suggestions? — FORGETFUL IN HAWAII

DEAR FORGETFUL: I agree, it is embarrassing, and it happens to everyone. It happened to me occasionally when I was in my 20s and needed to introduce my date to someone. There IS a way to get around it, provided you are fast enough. If a “senior moment” isn’t something you are willing to admit, then greet your old co-worker, friend, etc., and say something like, “Hi! How nice to see you!” Then turn to your spouse (or friend) and say, “We used to work together,” and let them introduce themselves .

Julia Fox: The Family That Chose Me

In an exclusive essay for ELLE.com, the actress, model, and Down the Drain author remembers how her friends stepped in at key moments and set her back on the right path.

On a Christmas morning many years ago, as I observed my friends eagerly unwrapping gifts of thrifted designer shoes and handbags, their faces lit up with pure joy, I had an epiphany. We all shared similar backgrounds: an absent parent here, a perpetually stressed parent there, or parents too wrapped up in their own struggles to be present.

This realization was bittersweet, but mostly sweet. Despite our shared traumas, we had woven something incredibly meaningful—a real family. None of us had a traditional home to return to during the holidays, but we had each other. And so, we ushered in a new, cherished tradition. Every holiday since then, we have opened our home to anyone without a biological family to go home to.

Before finding my chosen family, the holidays were always particularly difficult, especially in a city like New York. Most of my friends would retreat to their lavish homes on Long Island or elsewhere, leaving me to navigate the desolate landscape of Christmas in the city alone. I was too proud to seek companionship and too ashamed to admit I had nobody. I’d lock myself in my room, turning to TV and substances to pass the time, counting down the minutes until the dreadful day was over.

As a child, I felt like an orphan. I was often scapegoated, emotionally neglected, and severely misunderstood. I would often cling to any stranger that would show me an ounce of affection, oftentimes falling into predatory hands. My friend’s mothers could see me for who I was and overcompensate by allowing me to move in with them, just until “things get better at home.” But things never did get better. When I had overstayed my welcome, I would pack up my backpack and move onto the next temporary safe haven.

I became a master at adjusting to ever-changing dynamics and interpersonal relationships. I learned to read people’s moods just by their gaze. I knew when to speak, but more importantly, I knew when to leave. By doing so, I learned how to survive.

The formation of a chosen family is a deeply personal and organic process. The term gets thrown around a lot nowadays, and I can’t help but ask myself: Can you have a chosen family when you have close ties with your biological family? Although this group of loved ones is a beautiful thing, it’s typically born out of isolation, ostracization, and an immense amount of pain. How can you reach your chosen family if you haven’t been lost at sea alone for a lifetime before that?

.css-1aear8u:before{margin:0 auto 0.9375rem;width:34px;height:25px;content:'';display:block;background-repeat:no-repeat;}.loaded .css-1aear8u:before{background-image:url(/_assets/design-tokens/elle/static/images/quote.fddce92.svg);} .css-curasl{margin:0rem;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;font-family:SaolDisplay,SaolDisplay-fallback,SaolDisplay-roboto,SaolDisplay-local,Georgia,Times,serif;margin-bottom:0.3125rem;font-weight:normal;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 40.625rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.2;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 73.75rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-curasl em,.css-curasl i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;}.css-curasl b,.css-curasl strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-curasl i,.css-curasl em{font-style:italic;} When traditional families fail at providing that foundational support system, it’s only natural that we go out into the world subconsciously searching and attracting those who are in a similar struggle.”

Unlike the conventional family unit defined by blood ties and headaches, chosen family members are individuals who, through shared experience, create a solid intimate and supportive network that transcends time. At the heart lies the fundamental yearning to belong, the desire for companionship, and especially the need for pure and unconditional love. At our core we are all social creatures, seeking connections that nurture our emotional well-being and reaffirm our sense of identity. When traditional families fail at providing that foundational support system, it’s only natural that we go out into the world subconsciously searching and attracting those who are in a similar struggle.

It took years to find my chosen family, but when I did, something clicked. It was magic. It was as if they could feel what I had desperately been missing and they willingly stepped into this void, offering me radical acceptance. This was really put to the test when I had a child of my own. Due to some unforeseen and devastating circumstances, I was left alone with an infant. By that point, I had moved out of the home I had shared with them for over a decade and into a small apartment with a man who would leave me shortly after giving birth. I felt alone again, but mostly, I felt as if I was failing my child and bringing him up in the same conditions I was raised in. It took me a while to ask for help. It took even longer for me to admit to myself that I even needed help. I was 30. Surely, a 30-year-old should have her life together , I thought.

julia fox child

It didn’t take long for my chosen family to hear the things I wasn’t saying. They felt my pain and sprung into action. Fast-forward three years, we’re all living together again under one roof, co-parenting a happy little boy who’s never had to endure the sounds of fighting and yelling. Who only knows unconditional love and support. That’s something I didn’t learn until I found them.

One of the defining characteristics of a chosen family is inclusivity and diversity. These networks often comprise individuals from various backgrounds, sexualities, cultures, and life experiences. It’s this eclectic mix that fosters the empathy and understanding of our interconnectedness. What I’ve learned in my community is that no matter where we are from, we really aren’t all that different.

They also play a crucial role in providing support, especially for individuals navigating non-traditional identities or marginalized communities. LGBTQ+ individuals, for instance, often find solace and affirmation within circles that embrace and celebrate their identities without judgment or prejudice.

I’m sure at this point you’re wondering, “How can I find my own chosen family?” Well, the answer is simple: They will find you. Take the proverbial mask off, the one you put on when you want to fit in. The one you wear so no one will see how special you are. Once you embrace who you are and own your identity, your people will finally be able to find you. It was only when I started practicing radical honesty and humility that I was able to attract one into my life.

We embrace each other’s flaws and we hold each other tighter during the difficult moments.”

In my journey, I’ve learned that family is not solely defined by blood relations, but by the depth of emotional connection and the commitment to each other's growth and happiness. It’s hard work to love someone unconditionally. I know I can be difficult sometimes too. There were so many opportunities for my sisters to walk out of my life, but they chose to stay. And that’s the difference between friends and family. Friends can always leave, but family doesn’t have that option.

The people I surround myself with represent a beautiful tapestry of unique human relationships woven together by love, choice, and mutual support. We embrace each other’s flaws and we hold each other tighter during the difficult moments. We embody the essence of family beyond biological boundaries, offering a sanctuary of acceptance and belonging. As society continues to evolve, embracing the concept of chosen family enriches our collective understanding of human connection and the levels of love that we need to sustain us. For some, it may be the difference between life or death.

Asking Eric: My sister is pushing me to find out if my childhood friend ever slept with her late husband

  • Published: Aug. 06, 2024, 7:00 a.m.

R. Eric Thomas writes “Asking Eric,” a daily advice column from the bestselling author. NJ Advance Media

  • R. Eric Thomas

DEAR ERIC: My older sister is a recent widow. Her husband was unfaithful to her several times, but she chose to stay together.

One of his indiscretions was allegedly with a childhood friend of mine, with whom I’ve had sporadic contact over the years. The friend recently contacted me, out of the blue, to have dinner together.

Neither my sister nor I know if anything actually happened, and her husband always denied it.

My sister is now asking me to ask my friend the details of the affair. She wants to know for how long it went on, and what they did. My instinct says, “No way.” I’ve gently told her that.

I want to be supportive of my sister, but I told her I don’t know how this will help “heal” her past hurts.

She thinks it will, so she can “move on” with her life, and not “live in the past.”

My sister and I are very close, and her bringing up the past, even from our troubling childhood, is her m.o. (And yes, I have encouraged her to see a therapist, to no avail.) Either way, I believe it will further open very old wounds.

– Stumped Sister

DEAR SISTER: Your sister is trying to get some control over the uncontrollable. Some things that are uncontrollable here: grief, unfinished business, and secrets. I’m not certain that finding out the truth will allow her to move on if she’s not ready to release what happened.

Ask her a hard question: are you ready to forgive? Her husband can’t apologize; the friend may not apologize (or have anything to apologize for). There is a debt that she’s owed that’s uncollectable. Can she release that?

If she can’t yet – which is understandable – whatever information your friend gives you is just going to add to her grief.

Much of this is internal work that has deep roots in her relationship. Pinning her hopes to this one external interaction makes some sense, but it’s not going to help much.

Don’t let yourself get triangulated any more than you already are. Decline the invitation from your friend. And if your sister is insistent on getting answers, give her your friend’s number and let her ask herself.

DEAR READERS: Today my latest book of essays, “Congratulations, the Best Is Over!” is out in paperback everywhere books are sold. If you want a humorous and heart-filled account of true adventures that drove me to seek out advice and more – including an invasion of frogs, a doppelganger, and a medical caper – I hope you’ll pick it up

Asking Eric: My friends treat me differently after a medical scare

  • Published: Aug. 09, 2024, 2:00 a.m.

In today's Asking Eric column, R. Eric Thomas responds to someone who doesn't feel as supported by friends after suffering a stroke. Dreamstime

  • R. Eric Thomas

Dear Eric: I had a stroke in 2017. My husband passed away in 2022. This stroke was quite debilitating for me. I could not walk, sit up or stand.

Little by little, I’ve regained some abilities through hard work and therapy. I still can’t walk at all unless I have an orthotic device on.

My husband was wonderful in so many ways after my stroke and was also a cheerleader for me. While I have some wonderful friends and neighbors in my life, some longtime friends are not kind. They only talk about all that they are doing. Nary a question about me.

It is very hard to take, to be treated as a nothing, though I am not.

Do you have advice for me or many others with disabilities whose so-called friends decide to treat them as invalids as opposed to worthwhile people with some disabilities?

– Still Here

Dear Still Here: You deserve a cheerleader, and you deserve friends who are going to show up for you.

Tell your friends what you’re not getting. Say, “When you don’t ask me questions about myself or my life, I feel invisible. I want to know that you value me, even if some of the realities of my life make you uncomfortable. Can you do that?”

Some friends, unfortunately, may show the limits of their abilities; but others can rise to the occasion if given the right coaching. This shouldn’t fall to you to do, but sometimes we have to advocate hard for ourselves.

Ali Cameron, who runs an Instagram page called @seated.perspectives, has a great post from February 2023 called “5 Ways to Show Up for Your Disabled Friends”. I reached out to her for more education and insight.

“Depending on where you are with your relationship with your disability, I would recommend finding spaces designed by and for the disability community,” she said. “You will be so welcome. This could be virtual events or in-person experiences within your own community.”

“For friends who want to do more to include their disabled friends, I recommend being proactive and taking on the labor of researching a location’s accessibility. Ask them how you can best show up for them as you plan an event. Check in with them in social settings to make sure they’re comfortable and see if there’s anything you can do to make them feel more welcome.”

My mom had me at 22. Having a young mother has helped us become close friends in adulthood.

  • My mother had my brothers and me at 22, so she sacrificed most of her youth for us.
  • I took that for granted when growing up, and I even pushed her away in my 20s.
  • Now, in my 30s, I'm seeing a new side of my mother and forging a new friendship with her.

Insider Today

My mom gave birth to me and my three brothers at 22. She spent her early 20s raising quadruplet sons .

During an era that was supposed to be for taking risks and self-exploration, my single mom carpooled us to extracurricular activities, lectured about homework, and mapped out our futures while placing hers as the foundation for ours to flourish.

On the contrary, I cherished my 20s as a shamelessly selfish period for personal growth and discerning my values, ambitions, and social sphere.

Having recently turned 30 , I'm now seeing for the first time all the sacrifices my mom made for me, and it's taken me a long time to get here.

As a kid, I believed my mom's sole purpose was to raise me

Though my mother was young, becoming a parent surely matured her personality. I didn't view her as a young person . She was just my mother. I treated her like someone who could never relate to my skin. I treated her as if she didn't know what it was like to be young and make mistakes — to want to make mistakes for the sake of the adventure.

Many of our fights were rooted in my perception of her as the ogre hiding beneath my bridge of fun rather than the person dedicating the best years of her life to ensure I became all I could be. She was the bridge.

I regret not recognizing that sooner.

I spent 18 years asking for advice , love, and money, only to spend the next decade trying to prove I didn't need her.

I had to move away and make it on my own

Rather than embracing Mom as an unconditional friend who'd do anything for my well-being, I moved to New York and created as much emotional distance as possible between us. I thought I couldn't stand on my own two feet if she were there offering me a shoulder to lean on.

"When are you coming to visit?" was probably the most common question Mom asked me throughout my early 20s. Some years, I even skipped the holidays to spend them with my friends' families instead.

Perhaps the guilt of all she sacrificed for me drove me to prove I could do it myself. A simple " thank you " would have sufficed for Mom. Naturally, I needed hindsight. I needed to live life à la "Sex and the City" and travel the world to realize there's truly no place like home.

As an immigrant, "home" became wherever Mom's heartbeat pounded. I just didn't expect it to be in the Midwest, where she moved in 2016 to start a business, MCC Kitchen, Bath & Closet Remodeling , hoping we'd one day join her.

Working alongside my mother helped us bond as close friends

During the pandemic, I faced the loss of a major consulting gig. Matters worsened when my boyfriend turned into my captor; I wanted to break up but couldn't afford to leave him.

Mom immediately offered me the opportunity to work with her.

When I took the job, I was blown away by watching her transform from mother into CEO . She was barking orders like a military sergeant and navigating construction sites as if she were one of the boys.

At one point, I accidentally yelled at her to stop trying to help the contractors carry cabinetry. It wasn't our job, and she could get hurt.

"Do you think I'm some old woman?" she hollered, insisting it was important for the boss to show she wasn't too big for any role.

It was then that I finally noticed my mother was more than just Mom.

Our relationship is growing and morphing

On the weekends, Mom and I would go on walks on the lake and to new restaurants for dinner. I introduced her workaholic nature to the marvelous leisure of binge-watching "Golden Girls." She forced me to become attuned to my spirituality — insisting it was in there, somewhere .

I never thought that becoming an empty nester so soon would give Mom ample years to step into a snubbed identity: her own. And I was recognizing that in her for the first time.

Mom's prime years don't have to be an anecdote she shares with me, but it can instead be a shared experience. After all, she's a year younger than my ex.

Perhaps we could reach our golden years together because — unlike Mom — I have no qualms about retiring early.

Dear Annie: I lost my friend 30 years ago after a guy made a pass at me and she took his side

  • Published: Aug. 07, 2024, 9:00 p.m.

'Dear Annie' columnist Annie Lane

Annie Lane writes the Dear Annie advice column. Creators.com

Dear Annie: My good friend and I were sitting and relaxing on her front porch, when the guy she had a crush on (they weren’t even dating) came walking by. I asked her if I could have a drink, and she said there was soda in the fridge, so go help myself.

I left them outside to talk. I leaned into the fridge to reach for the soda, and when I stood up and turned around, he was in my face and kissed me. I was shocked and appalled. I went outside and he left.

I struggled with what to do, and felt it was only right to tell my friend. She confronted him, and he told her I had made a pass at him. She blamed me, cut off the friendship and tried to make my life miserable.

That was over 30 years ago. And no, she never did date him. I realized she wasn’t really a friend to begin with, if she believed him over me. Sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing. -- Shocked Friend

Dear Shocked Friend: You absolutely did the right thing. She sounds like she wasn’t much of a friend in the first place. What that guy did to you was a form of assault, and she let her feelings for him get in the way of being an empathetic friend to you while you were going through something scary. Sounds like the two of them deserved each other. They should have dated!

I learned my husband has cancer while training for the Olympics. Now his battle is my motivation

Maddie Musselman.

Getting to Paris has been special, but different from past Olympics I’ve competed in, since my husband, Pat, has been fighting cancer this entire year. I’ve talked about how Pat’s journey has motivated me — he was diagnosed with a rare, stage 4 lung cancer at age 30 — but what most people don’t know is how it’s impacted our entire team. I’m personally going through this with him, but my team has been going through it, too — both as teammates and as friends.

Pat had a collegiate career within our sport so he knows what’s going on. I see the admiration my teammates have for him, and they see the passion and excitement he has for water polo. He gave an inspirational talk to our team, and I think he has a lot to do with the way we’ve been playing, fighting and competing so far in Paris. My teammates have said that if Pat’s fighting cancer, they can swim another lap, or work even a little harder. When they make comments like that, it makes it worth it — being here. Although sport is amazing, when life throws something at you like a cancer diagnosis, it all seems a little bit less important. But we’re all inspired by him, and I’m happy he’s a part of our process. Now that we’ve made it here, it’s time to play for him, and to show the world the work that this team’s put in, and to prove to myself that I can do hard things.

Pat Woepse, center, husband of the U.S. player Maddie Musselman, watches a match during a women's Water Polo.

I got the chance to show my husband around the Olympic Village . I wanted to take him because living there is so unique and unless you’re on an Olympic team, you don’t see that. My favorite part is the apartments where you live with other Team USA athletes. It’s consistent with past Olympics, where you get to be with top athletes from your country in the same building, crossing paths and connecting. For me, the respect that other athletes show you is the coolest thing ever. And when you step outside your Team USA building, then you’re surrounded by athletes from every country competing in so many different sports, all in one area. Not everyone speaks the same language, but we all made it here — to the Olympic Games. The first question people ask each other is, “Hey, you want to trade a pin?” And then, “What sport are you?”

Just that simple exchange connects the world in so many ways. My coach talks about how the Olympics are a great display of world peace because everyone’s in the same area getting along and being inspired by each other. But at the same time, we’re competing against each other. It’s cool to see the teams you play against, but I’m happy I don’t have to see them all the time.

There’s a lot of energy in the village — you can feel the hype from the other athletes even before the opening ceremony . But we have a sports psychologist who does a good job of keeping our minds in the right place. If you let the expectations or that external energy get too big, they can consume you and not let you play your game the way that you know how to play it. We remind ourselves all the time that we’ve been playing water polo since we were kids and it’s no different just because we’re at the Olympics. We know what we need to do and just need to go out there and do it. We want to win a gold medal. But we can’t let that energy get to us and take us off our game.

For me, to keep my mind in the right place, I tell myself that this is just another game of water polo, and I know how to play. I’ve seen teams totally implode or get consumed by the pressure. Everyone’s out here to win, and you can’t go in with any expectations. That’s just the reality.

Maddie Musselman.

I’ve experienced the Olympic Village in Rio and Tokyo, but it can still feel chaotic. In the dining hall , there are so many people and so much going on, but our team pretty much hangs out together so it’s not as overwhelming. But I feel for the new people doing this for the first time. It can be a lot to take in and get used to the first couple days.

Speaking of the dining hall, have you heard about the chocolate muffins ? They are really good. Like really good. Everyone’s eating them for dessert or just for a treat. It’s been fun to watch parts of the experience take off on social media, too. There was a Norwegian swimmer who posted TikToks about his chocolate muffin obsession . And my teammate created a funny TikTok about the Olympic pin trading game, because that’s her obsession. As for me, I’m just focused on Pat and playing the game. That said, the chocolate muffins are pretty bomb. And I do have a favorite village coffee shop that prints photos from your phone on your coffee foam. Whether it’s a photo of your dog or the Eiffel Tower, anything goes. Pat and I had our picture printed on our coffee, which was fun. Bike riding is new this year, but I don’t want to fall and hurt myself so I stick to walking. But there are people riding around near the river with a pretty view of the sunset, which is fun too.

A coffee with the couple's face printed in foam at an Olympic Village coffee shop.

What’s surprised me the most so far at the Olympics is playing in different venues. For the quarterfinals, we were moved to a new, even bigger swimming venue, so it was an entirely new experience. It’s also been way louder than I expected in the venues, which makes it extremely hard to hear what your teammates are saying in the water. Luckily, I’ve been playing with them for years, so I’m able to figure it out. Whatever the environment is, that’s the environment, and we’ve just got to keep playing.

Mostly, I’m grateful that Pat is doing well right now. It’s a bonus to even have him here moving around, going to events and enjoying himself more than we thought he would. When he goes through treatment, it can deplete him, but his energy’s been so high and excited, so that’s a win in itself.

This interview has been edited.
