Doctor Movie Review: A True Original, Though It Could Have Used A Little More Energy

Imagine this situation: You are the hero of a big movie, and in the film a girl you know has been kidnapped. What would you do? You'd probably find and threaten a few low-level kidnappers through whom you'd get to know the next rung in the hierarchy of kidnappers. Slowly, you go from rung to rung until you reach the ultimate villain (very smartly played by Vinay Rai). And you'd single-handedly fight the villain and save the girl. But Nelson says that even with that exact series of steps, a movie can be very different.
With a terrific supporting cast of Archana, Ilavarasu and Yogi Babu, he treats a family tragedy (the girl's kidnapping) like a whacky comedy. And he shows that you can take a hero known for his smile and make him serious throughout the film. The only time Sivakarthikeyan's Varun smiles is during the hit 'Chellamma' song (and it's in character at that point). Throughout the movie, he doesn't even crack one single smile.
Imagine a Sivarakarthikeyan film where he doesn't crack a single smile; that famous grin of his that you see on posters is completely absent. In the very first scene, we see him as a doctor in a war zone treating two patients: an Indian colonel on the verge of dying and a terrorist. He decides to treat the terrorist who's not as grievously wounded because there's a chance he might have vital information. This trait defines him throughout the film; he's not a kattipudi vaithiyam kind of a guy. He's unemotional and utterly logical.
Varun even says that you can't do an operation if you reveal your feelings — whether it be an actual operation or saving a kidnapped girl. A big salute to Sivakarthikeyan for playing a robotic character without worrying if his fans will still like him. With Vijay's alcoholism in Master and Ajith's bipolarity in Nerkonda Paarvai , it's really great to see our big heroes get adventurous in their choice of roles.
But the real hero of the film is director Nelson. He seems to have thought about how to make every scene different and avoid cliches: Why should the hero always fight alone and save the day single-handedly? Why can't he have help from other people? Also, why should the hero and heroine always fall in love in the first half? Couldn't it happen at a much later stage too? Typically, we expect duets in the first half when the energy level is high. But instead, we get a sad song where we see slow-mo shots of the kidnapped girl's family — and we feel how much pain they are in.
In many ways, I was reminded of Nelson's debut Kolamaavu Kokila because there was a conscious effort to be different and avoid cliches in that film too: There was no hero, and the whole film revolved around the heroine whose mother had lung cancer. Yet, the film was treated as a whacky comedy. At a basic level, Doctor is certainly like Kolamaavu Kokila because it takes a serious issue and goes in a totally (and tonally) different direction. The issue of lung cancer became a black-comedy-cum-drama in Kolamavu Kokila . In Doctor, the serious issue of human trafficking becames a black-comedy-cum-thriller.
Anirudh really gets Nelson: You get both the tones of a black comedy and a thriller, but in very different instrumental shades. C inematographer Sivakumar Vijayan had made Kolamavu Kokila a very colorful film (with neon, etc.). But Doctor is a quasi-realistic film and the look by Vijay Kartik Kannan works beautifully.
But I also faced an issue in Doctor that I had with Kolamavu Kokila . On paper, the screenplay would have been fantastic with all the humour and cliche-breaking. But on screen, the tones sometimes clash, and the mood falls flat when things get serious. There are pacing issues too and the scenes needed a little more energy, a little more zing. Nelson lets every moment linger a beat or two more than necessary, and it makes a lot of scenes less than what they could have been. You're still appreciative about the lack of cliche, and you're enjoying the individual jokes, but you also feel it should have worked much better in its entirety.
But Doctor is still a solid entertainer with many memorable moments: the profit-sharing joke, Yogi Babu's hand-slapping game, how the villain stages a trump card at the breakfast table at a resort, and — best of all, something I didn't expect — the way the hero stages a kidnapping. There's also a terrific action scene in a metro train which is staged with so much humour; minute-to-minute, you just can't predict what's going to happen.
There were so many times in Doctor when I wondered how Nelson was imagining such things. Without doubt, Nelson is a very unique and individual director — whether it's his thinking or the writing, he has a unique signature. So many scenes in Doctor are so fantastically imaginative that the film really raises your hopes about Nelson's next film with Vijay.

తెలుగు చిత్రసీమలో దసరా జోష్ కనిపిస్తోంది. ప్రేక్షకులకు పండగ వినోదాలు అందించేందుకు తెలుగు చిత్రాలన్నీ ఒక్కొక్కటిగా బాక్సాఫీస్ ముందుకు వరుస కడుతున్నాయి. ఈ రేసులో ‘వరుణ్ డాక్టర్’ అనే ఓ అనువాద చిత్రమూ అదృష్టం పరీక్షించుకునేందుకు వచ్చింది. తమిళ కథానాయకుడు శివ కార్తికేయన్ నటించిన చిత్రమిది. నెల్సన్ దిలీప్ కుమార్ తెరకెక్కించారు. ‘రెమో’, ‘శక్తి’వంటి విజయవంతమైన చిత్రాల తర్వాత కార్తికేయన్ నుంచి వస్తున్న సినిమా కావడం.. దీనికి తోడు ప్రచార చిత్రాలు ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉండటంతో ప్రేక్షకుల్లోనూ అంచనాలేర్పడ్డాయి. మరి ‘వరుణ్ డాక్టర్’ ఆ అంచనాల్ని అందుకుందా? లేదా?
కథేంటంటే: వరుణ్ (శివ కార్తికేయన్) ఓ ఆర్మీ డాక్టర్. పెళ్లిచూపుల్లో పద్మిని (ప్రియాంక అరుళ్ మోహన్)ని చూసి ఇష్టపడతాడు. ఆమెతో ఏడడుగులు వేయడానికి సిద్ధపడుతున్న సమయంలోనే.. కొన్ని కారణాల వల్ల ఇద్దరూ విడిపోవాల్సిన పరిస్థితి వస్తుంది. అదే సమయంలో అనుకోకుండా పద్మిని చెల్లెలు కిడ్నాప్ అవుతుంది. దీంతో ఆ పాపని వెతికి పట్టుకునే బాధ్యతను వరుణ్ తన భుజాలకు ఎత్తుకుంటాడు. ఆ పిల్ల కోసం వెతుకుతున్న క్రమంలో మరిన్ని ఆసక్తికరమైన విషయాలు వెలుగులోకి వస్తాయి. ఆ పాపలాగానే గత నాలుగేళ్లలో 400మంది వరకూ పిల్లలు కిడ్నాప్ అయ్యారని తెలుస్తుంది. మరి ఈ భారీ కిడ్నాప్ రాకెట్ వెనకున్న ఆ అరాచక శక్తి ఎవరు? ఆ దుర్మార్గుడ్ని వరుణ్ ఎలా పట్టుకుంటాడు? ఈ క్రమంలో అతనికి ఎదురైన సవాళ్లేంటి? కనిపించకుండా పోయిన ఆ పిల్లలందరూ క్షేమంగా తిరిగొస్తారా? అన్నది తెరపై చూడాలి!
ఎలా ఉందంటే: మనుషుల అక్రమ రవాణా నేపథ్యంలో సాగే సీరియస్ క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్లర్ ఇది. నగరంలో వరుస కిడ్నాప్లు.. వాటిని పట్టుకునేందుకు ఓ ఆర్మీ డాక్టర్ రంగంలోకి దిగడం.. ఓ బాధిత కుటుంబాన్ని తన సైన్యంగా మార్చుకుని ఆ కిడ్నాప్ రాకెట్ను ఛేదించే ప్రయత్నం చేయడం.. ఇలా లైన్గా వింటున్నప్పుడు దర్శకుడిగా నెల్సన్ తొలి ప్రయత్నంలోనే భలే కథ ఎంచుకున్నాడు కదా అనిపిస్తుంది. బహుశా కార్తికేయన్ కూడా ఈ కథని విన్నప్పుడుఅలాగే ఫీలై సినిమాకి ఓకే చెప్పి ఉంటాడు. నిజానికి ఇలాంటి కథల్ని చెప్పడంలో కంటే తెరపై ఆసక్తికరంగా ఆవిష్కరించడంలోనే దర్శకుడి సత్తా బయటపడుతుంది. అయితే ఈ విషయంలో నెల్సన్ తొలి ఫ్రేం నుంచే బోల్తా కొట్టినట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. థ్రిల్లర్ అనగానే ప్రేక్షకులు ఊహించని మలుపుల్ని.. బిగి సడలని కథనాన్ని ఊహిస్తారు. తాను చెప్పే కథలో ఎన్ని చిక్కుముడులు ఉంటే కథ అంత రసవత్తరంగా సాగుతుంది. కానీ, ఇలాంటి మలుపులు, ఆసక్తిరేకెత్తించే చిక్కుముడులు ఈ కథలో ఒక్కటి కూడా కనిపించదు. దీనికి తోడు సీరియస్గా నడిపించాల్సిన ఇలాంటి కథనాల్ని.. నెల్సన్ కామెడీ యాంగిల్లో నడిపించాలనుకోవడం మరో పెద్ద పొరపాటు. అదే ఈ చిత్రానికి పెద్ద మైనస్.
ఆరంభంలో శివ కార్తికేయన్ ఎంట్రీ ఎంత నిస్తేజంగా ఉంటుందో.. ఆ తర్వాత సాగే కథనం కూడా అంతే చప్పగా ఉంటుంది. ప్రారంభంలోనే ప్రేమించిన తనని అమ్మాయి కాదనడం.. దానికి ఆమె చెప్పిన సిల్లీ కారణాలతో కథ నిరుత్సాహంగా కథ మొదలు పెట్టిన దర్శకుడు.. వెంటనే ఓ కిడ్నాప్ అంశాన్ని తెరపైకి తెచ్చి కథలో వేగం పెంచే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు. అయితే ఆ కిడ్నాప్లు జరిగిన తీరులోనూ.. ఆ కేసును ఛేదించే క్రమంలో కార్తికేయన్ వేసే ఎత్తుగడల్లోనూ ఎక్కడా నాటకీయత కనిపించదు. ప్రతిదీ చాలా సిల్లీగా.. ఊహలకు తగ్గట్లుగా సాగుతున్నట్లుండటంతో ప్రథమార్ధమంతా బోరింగ్గా సాగుతున్నట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. కిడ్నాప్ రాకెట్ను ఛేదించేందుకు కార్తికేయన్ కూడా అదే తరహాలో కిడ్నాప్ డ్రామాలతో రౌడీల్ని బురిడీ కొట్టించే సన్నివేశాలు మరింత నవ్వు తెప్పించేలా ఉంటాయి తప్ప ఏ మాత్రం రసవత్తరంగా అనిపించవు. అయితే ఈ క్రమంలో యోగిబాబు పంచే నవ్వులే కాస్తో కూస్తో కాలక్షేపాన్ని అందిస్తాయి. సరిగ్గా విరామ సమయానికి హీరో కిడ్నాప్ అయిన అమ్మాయిలు గోవాలో ఉన్నారని తెలుసుకోవడం.. వాళ్లను విడిపించేందుకు ఓ ఆపరేషన్ ప్రారంభించడంతో ద్వితీయార్ధంలో ఏం జరగబోతుందా? అన్న ఆసక్తి మొదలవుతుంది. ఇక కథ గోవాకు షిఫ్ట్ అయ్యాక.. కథనంలో వేగం పెరుగుతుందేమో అని ఆశిస్తే అక్కడా నిరాశే ఎదురవుతుంది. ప్రధాన ప్రతినాయకుడు వినయ్ రాయ్కి.. శివ కార్తికేయన్కి మధ్య నడిచే మైండ్ గేమ్లోనూ ఎలాంటి ఉత్కంఠత కనిపించదు. అయితే ఆట పేరుతో యోగిబాబు వినయ్ గ్యాంగ్ను చితక్కొట్టే సన్నివేశాలు మాత్రం నవ్వులు పంచుతాయి. క్లైమాక్స్లో కార్తికేయన్కు.. వినయ్కు మధ్య వచ్చే పోరు. కిడ్నాప్ అయిన అమ్మాయిల్ని చెర నుంచి బయటకు తీసుకెళ్లేందుకు వేసిన ఎత్తుగడ ఫర్వాలేదనిపిస్తాయి.
ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: డాక్టర్ వరుణ్ పాత్రలో శివ కార్తికేయన్ ఒదిగిపోయారు. ఆద్యంతం ఓ సీరియస్ లుక్లో కనిపిస్తూనే.. స్టైలిష్ పెర్ఫామెన్స్ తో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. మెట్రో ట్రైన్లో ఆయన ప్రతినాయకులతో చేసే ఫైట్ ప్రధాన ఆకర్షణగా నిలిచింది. పద్మినిగా ప్రియాంక ఫర్వాలేదనిపించింది. సినిమా మొత్తం ఆమె పాత్ర కనిపించినా.. నటనకు ఎక్కడా ఆస్కారం ఉండదు. యోగిబాబు తన పాత్రకి న్యాయం చేశాడు. ప్రతినాయకుడిగా వినయ్ స్టైలిష్గా కనిపించినా.. ఆయన పాత్రని తీర్చిదిద్దిన తీరు చాలా పేలవంగా అనిపిస్తుంది. నెల్సన్ మంచి కథను ఎంచుకున్నా.. దాన్ని ఆసక్తికరమైన కథనంగా మార్చుకోవడంలో పూర్తిగా తడబడ్డాడు. క్లైమాక్స్లో అనిరుధ్ నేపథ్య సంగీతం మెప్పిస్తుంది. పాటలు పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకునేలా లేవు. విజయ్ కార్తిక్ ఛాయాగ్రహణం ఫర్వాలేదనిపిస్తుంది.

‘Doctor’ movie review: An enjoyable comedy-caper that has Sivakarthikeyan playing down his strengths
Director nelson’s writing is top-notch, as are the performances by the ensemble cast, in this roller-coaster of a watch.

Sivakarthikeyan in ‘Doctor’
Let me make a confession first: I had great fun watching the BTS videos that the team of Doctor put up. One of them has director Nelson waiting desperately outside composer Anirudh’s studio for a song. The composer strolls out, phone in hand, “ Ippo lam directors studio vella padhuturanga (These days, directors have started sleeping outside the studio) . They don’t understand that music composing is a creative process. ”

There’s another funny interaction between the director and hero Sivakarthikeyan, where the former pulls the star’s leg about the Kalaimamani award he bagged recently.
Most of these videos are delivered seriously, but are packed with humour and witty repartees. Nelson continues that irreverence on the big screen in Doctor .
With his earlier film Kolamavu Kokila , the filmmaker proved that he could captivate audiences with the story of an ordinary family doing extraordinary things. He repeats the same trope in this outing, and the result: an intriguing tale of a family going to great lengths, to save a loved one.

That’s the gist, but the film begins with Varun (Sivakarthikeyan), a doctor with a stickler for discipline. He’s also practical about life, which is why the girl he likes (Priyanka Arul Mohan, who doesn’t have much to do) doesn’t reciprocate his feelings; she wishes for someone with more emotions, more heart.
In a while, she’ll see all that; when a child from their family is kidnapped, Varun jumps into action. Will he triumph?

The biggest USP of the film is that it isn’t about Doctor himself; Sivakarthikeyan, in this case. In fact, this is probably his most understated role so far. It literally robs him of his cheery and boisterous self, a quality that has endeared him to the family audiences. In Doctor , he’s like a Rishabh Pant staying quiet on the crease (Pant is known for his aggressive style of batting). Even his dialogue delivery is staccato-like. You could have placed Chitti from Endhiran here, and it wouldn’t have made too much a difference.
However, much like the Professor from popular series Money Heist , Sivakarthikeyan stays in the background while trying to galvanise a family to do something that is normally the police department’s job. The family is filled with memorable characters, and so are the people they meet in the roller-coaster process of saving their loved one.
The first half crackles with humour, with comedy actor Kingsley having us in splits with his brash dialogue delivery. Nelson packs a lot of comedy in the scenes, so much so that even action sequences have a dose of humour (check out the one shot inside a Metro train compartment). Though he loses the plot to an extent in the second half, the interesting set of characters he has designed and their performances keep you invested till the end.
Much like many Tamil films in recent times, Doctor too highlights a cause, that of human trafficking. Statistics and dialogues proving the cause are but a line or two… that’s such a relief. Also refreshing is watching Unnale Unnale Vinay play a character with shades of grey; it isn’t much to write home about, but boy, Vinay does still look fit and fine. Anirudh’s music and background score are major highlights of Doctor ; the use of a Carnatic melodic phrase (‘The Soul of Doctor’ track) to a slow-motion fight sequence surprisingly fits, as does the foot-tapping ‘Chellamma’ song. The cinematography — by Vijay Karthik Kannan — also gives us some greatly-lit frames. All these are richly packed in the 148-minute roller-coaster comedy that Doctor is. All these augur well for Beast , director Nelson’s next biggie with Vijay.

Story Review
Varun (Siva Karthikeyan), a doctor in the military , falls in love with Padmini (Priyanka Arul Mohan). When Varun is enjoying his love life, Padmini calls off their wedding citing his behavior. However, Varun decides to help Padmini's family after getting to know that her niece goes missing. Where this leads to and the mysterious twists and turns from the rest of the story.
Artists, Technicians Review
Nelson Dilip Kumar starts off the narration in a slow manner. But it picks up pace after the kidnapping incident. The first half passes off in a jovial, interesting and hilarious manner and the interval bang is good. Nelson generated immense fun with dark comedy and the metro train scene stands out. However seriousness creeps into the second half and with routine elements and dip in pace, brings down the graph. The story has shades of Nani's Gang Leader, Nelson's Kolamavu Koika and entertains with a race screenplay in the first half. Dialogues and witty one liners create a laughing riot. The film defies logic but one can ignore as it gives wholesome entertainment to some extent at least in the first half before losing its way a bit in the second half.
Siva Karthikeyan toned down his hilarious and mass antics and mannerisms to do a different genre role. He came with an expressionless face most of the time in a role completely new for him. Director Nelson showed Siva in a different role and he emerged successful in his attempt.However at times Siva Karthikeyan's expressions and physique became too rigid. Priyanka Arul Mohan did her role but she got limited scope to show her talent. Priyanka's character loses in the story as she is first shown as a strong lady with good judgement abilities but later turning dumb.
Vinay Rai who is known for his role in Villain, performed well as an antagonist in the film. Yogi Babu entertained with his comedy. Yogi Babu got good screen presence and Nelson used his talent to the optimum. Redin Kingsely stole the limelight with his hilarious performance. But fans of Siva Karthikeyan will be disappointed as Shiva's role didn't get any chance to enact comedy in the film. Nelson underused Milind Soman and Raghu Ram while others like Archana, Ilavarasu, Sunil, Deepa performed their roles accordingly.
Anirudh Ravichander's music is good. He made a powerful impact with his background music and elevated the scenes taking them to another level. Cinematography of Vijay Karthik Kannan used perfect camera angles to give a realistic feel to the film. Nirmal's editing is quite good but he could have fine tuned the second half a bit. Production values are good.

The combination of Siva Karthikeyan and Nelson Dilip Kumar generated interest among viewers. Varun Doctor first half takes viewers to a hilarious ride with dark comedy and when they are ready for a takeoff, the second half slips down drastically much to their disappointment. Had Nelson continued from where he left in the second half, without dip in comedy, Varun Doctor with a Spanish dark comedy flavor would have made a better impact. Considering these points, CJ goes with a 2.25 rating for Varun Doctor .
