Wallhaven is my favorite free wallpaper website primarily because of the stunning and unique images I haven't found anywhere else. There's something for everyone, from realism to the completely abstract.

You can view the wallpapers by searching by keyword, viewing the most recently added, bringing up a random page of wallpapers, selecting a color, and more. I also like that I can upload an image to find a wallpaper that's visually similar. Clicking through tags is another option; these are very detailed and accurate.

Changing your wallpaper is a simple computer personalization step, but it can have a huge effect on your mood and productivity. And with today's impressive displays, using a high-resolution wallpaper is a must. Those small wallpapers from old CRT monitors won't cut it anymore.

Whether you want to build up a collection of high-quality wallpapers or just replace the generic default background that came with your computer, here are the best wallpaper sites full of high-quality images.

A Note on High-Resolution Wallpapers

Before we begin, we should briefly explain what's considered a "high-resolution" or "HD" wallpaper so everyone is on the same page.

Computer displays, as well as digital images, are usually measured by width and height in pixels. For example, a 1080p display is 1920px wide by 1080px tall. Because 1080p is considered "full HD," this is our baseline for high-resolution wallpapers. We'll only include sites that have plenty of wallpapers in 1920x1080 and above, such as 4K wallpapers.

You can use a wallpaper that's smaller or larger than your monitor's size if you want. But if it's too small, the image will stretch to fit your display and look distorted. And when using a wallpaper that's a higher resolution than your monitor, you'll have to either downsize it or crop it to fit your display.

If you have to choose, it's better to pick a higher-resolution one. They'll look sharper, and are future-proofed for when you upgrade to a higher-resolution display in the future.

Wallhaven makes its way onto many lists of the best wallpaper websites. And while it's not specifically known for high-resolution wallpapers, we found that nearly all the images on offer were 1080p or above.

Start by browsing the homepage or using the Latest , Hot , Toplist , or Random buttons at the top. Once you find one you like, Wallhaven makes it easy to find similar images. Use the Tags on the left sidebar, select More like this to display comparable images, or even choose a color from the image to search by.

If you want to download a wallpaper in a different resolution, choose Crop & Scale Download under Tools to choose a different preset size or set your own.

As of this writing, Wallhaven has a large amount of AI-generated images. Many of these feature women, some of which are slightly suggestive. Assuming you're not interested in these, we recommend toggling off the Anime and People buttons at the top of the search page. You'll still have to sort through some of them, but there are plenty of normal wallpaper images on the site worth checking out.

It's no surprise that Reddit has several subreddits dedicated to wallpapers. You'll find several active communities that post new wallpapers all the time.

The most popular is /r/wallpaper , which boasts over a million members. Most wallpapers are at least 1920x1080. If you don't find what you're looking for on that subreddit, give the similarly named /r/wallpapers a look.

These communities have a lot in common, and many people cross-post to both subreddits. But it's worth scouring both for the maximum amount of cool wallpapers.

Finally, if you're looking for even higher-resolution wallpapers, have a look at /r/WQHD_Wallpaper . WQHD (wide quad HD) is a term for the 2560x1440 resolution, also known as 1440p. Thus, these wallpapers are a good fit for 1440p and 4K displays.

The site asks that all uploaded wallpapers are 2880x1800, meaning they meet the hi-res wallpaper criteria. And because they're so straightforward, you can easily crop them to fit smaller displays if needed.

The Best Places to Get Stunning Desktop Wallpaper

If you’re on your computer or phone for hours a day (and let’s be real—you are), you can keep things interesting with desktop wallpaper. If you want to go beyond what’s included in your operating system or old photos from your camera roll, you can find thousands and thousands of alternatives on the internet.

So whether you love switching out beautiful desktop wallpaper or just want something minimal that you’re going to open windows over anyway, here are some of our picks for wallpaper.

WallpaperStock

WallpaperStock makes our list because of its huge selection of free wallpapers across many categories. You can download wallpaper for specific mobile devices, screen resolutions, and social media platforms. While you can sort for the top wallpapers or use the random function, there’s no easy way to view by category other than searching for something specific and clicking through category tags.

Plus, the site shows ads, which is a little distracting. But overall, the selection is worth a look.

Social Wallpapering

Social Wallpapering started ages ago with a Digg-like approach to create a user-curated collection of wallpapers, organized by quality based on user votes. The Social Wallpapering community may not be big enough to really get the wallpapers organized that way, but the collection of available images is huge and updated with new submissions fairly regularly.

The sort-by-category function is a little wonky, but you can also upload your own images or create an account to save your favorites.

DeviantArt Wallpaper

DeviantArt is a huge community of artists and fans, and among the many things you can find on the site is a huge collection of wallpapers . It features everything from photos and illustrations to abstract digital art—even fantasy or fanart of your favorite movie, video game, or comic franchise. You can select a category, sort by newest or most popular, or search for something specific in the site’s massive database.

You can’t filter specifically for resolution or display size, and the categories aren’t cut and dried, so it can be tricky to find exactly what you’re looking for. That said, it’s consistently been one of our favorite desktop web sites .

Desktop Nexus

One of our favorite underrated desktop wallpaper sites , Desktop Nexus has a community of over a million users who have collectively uploaded and voted on nearly 1.5 million wallpapers. Everything at Desktop Nexus is neatly organized by category, and if you select one category, a wealth of subcategories opens up underneath it (and you can view them all here ).

All of the wallpapers are organized by member votes, so you can sort by what’s popular or new or search for something specific. FYI: you have to be a member for at least a month or upload 25 of your own wallpapers in order to vote on others.

HDWallpapers.net

HDWallpapers.net is updated daily with high-def photos, illustrations, and more. You can sort by featured, popular, or latest, browse based on category, or search for something specific. When you go to download, you can choose your specific mobile device, your computer screen resolution, or even a social media platform (like a Facebook cover photo).

You don’t have to create an account to download wallpapers, but you can in order to upload or save your favorites.

Wallhaven started out as a project to replace/rebuild/improve upon Wallbase, which is dead now but used to be one of our favorite wallpaper sites just because it scraped wallpapers from so many sources we also liked.

The community is massive, the database is large, and once you have a free account, you can browse by tag or popularity (the Toplist option), filter for SFW images (or not), choose specific resolutions, or roll the dice with the Random function and see what you come up with. Best of all, the site has infinite scroll, so you don’t have to click through multiple pages to view more wallpapers.

InterfaceLift

Another old (and well-loved ) standard in the wallpaper community, IntefaceLift has long been a premier source of beautiful wallpapers of natural scenes, photos-turned-wallpapers, and more. Plus, the site deals in more than just wallpapers: like DeviantArt, there’s a huge community of people there making icon packs, system themes, and more.

InterfaceLift will automatically detect your screen resolution and show you wallpapers accordingly—you can also sort by resolution or device. The site may not have the massive selection or scraped images from others on this list, and it isn’t updated as regularly, but you can see everything about the photos you download, including the cameras used to take them, who took them, and their comments.

Simple Desktops

If you’re not interested in photos, abstract art, or other busy images for your desktop, Simple Desktops may be more up your alley. All of the wallpapers at Simple Desktops are fairly minimal and include patterns, text snippets, or iconographic images that look great and say a lot without saying much at all. They’ll hand-selected and curated because they’re attractive without being busy or distracting —which can be perfect if you want to dress up your desktop without standing out too much in an office or distracting yourself with what’s on it.

Simple Desktops has options for mobile devices via Android and iOS-specific apps. There’s also a Mac desktop app. Finally, all of their images are sourced, so you can learn a little bit about the artist who made them too.

Digital Blasphemy

No discussion of wallpaper sites is complete without a stop by Digital Blasphemy , run since 1999 by friend of Lifehacker Ryan Bliss. Its beginnings go back to the early web as one of the first places to find really unique and interesting 3D art and unique wallpapers that weren’t photos. Today, its current iteration combines all of the things that made it great years ago with modern, up-to-date fantasy art, landscapes, sci-fi vistas, and natural scenes.

Only a small selection of the wallpapers available at Digital Blasphemy is available for free—the real wealth of its catalog is hidden behind a $20/year membership plan (different tiers have more perks, and you can see them all here ). Additionally, Digital Blasphemy has wallpapers for multiple monitors and mobile devices, and there are Digital Blasphemy apps for Windows, iOS, and Android.

Automatic wallpaper changers

While all of the above are great sources for new wallpapers to dress up your desktop, sometimes the best sources are the ones you install on your computer and forget about, and just let the wallpapers come to you. Mac OS has a built-in wallpaper changer (Settings > Desktop & Screen Saver > Change picture) that cycles through Apple’s desktop images or photos on your computer.

There are a ton of third-party apps, but John’s Background Switcher is one of our favorite wallpaper managers with a free Windows version and a paid option for Mac. While it’s great with your own downloaded desktops, it’s even better if you use the integrations with photo services (Flickr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google Photos, to name a few) or RSS feeds and let the app do the downloading and switching for you.

Irvue for Mac integrates with Unsplash and can change your wallpaper at intervals ranging from 30 minutes to a month. Windows users can also go with DisplayFusion , which switches your desktop images based on customized profiles.

There’s no way we could include all of our favorite wallpaper and desktop services on this list. Since we were hanging the paper in an older house, we had to deal with lots of imperfections and special cuts, but this paper was easy to cut.

Country Living has always been fond of floral and pastoral toile patterns and we love this hilarious take on a classic toile pattern by designer Rachel Antonoff . At first glance this toile mimics the usual nature of a toile pattern, but closer inspection reveals that it is filled with mischievous pups. Some of them appear to be unrolling toilet paper, which makes this a cheeky choice for a powder room. Wall Pops has very reasonably priced samples so you can check out peel and stick wallpaper patterns before committing, which makes them a favorite source for us. The site also offers a tool that enables the buyer to upload a photo of their room to get an idea of how the wallpaper will look in their space.

This peel and stick paper was tested in a small bathroom that tends to get humid, so we’re curious to see how it holds up over time. The homeowners have plans to gut the bathroom completely in several years, so this removable wallpaper provides a temporary solution to the damaged wallpaper that had become an eye sore. RoomMates Beadboard Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Craving a bit more architectural pizazz in your home? Then you will love this beadboard patterned wallpaper. Nothing infuses character into a space the same way that tongue-and-groove paneling, beadboard, or wainscoting does. This look-a-like beadboard peels and sticks just like other removable papers, but once installed it is surprisingly convincing as the really thing. No drilling required.

We tested this paper on a very damaged wall with lots of nail holes. The paper was easy to install even with a few bumps working against us!

Tempaper & Co. Garden Peel and Stick Wall Mural

If a patterned wall excites you, but trimming and navigating installation in an entire room turns you off, consider a peel and stick mural. Tempaper has a calculator that makes it easy to order the right amount of paper for a single accent wall, or for the whole room once you realize how easy it is to work with. Tempaper also sends over a brief that factors in obstacles like windows, doorways, and outlets for the customer to approve before they finalize the order.

We ordered an 8- by 10-foot mural for testing. The exact measurements of the wall meant we did not even have to cut the paper, which made install very quick. Each panel was labeled and the top was noted, so there was no guesswork when it came to deciding which one was next. Tempaper also included a very handy tool for smoothing any wrinkles. The soft side was wonderful at getting out the larger air bubbles, while the hard side was essential for getting out the tinier creases.

UO Home Pretty Bows Peach Removable Wallpaper

Urban Outfitters has an extensive removable wallpaper selection. The panels come in three different sizes to accommodate various sizes of spaces. This bow pattern is perfectly on trend—even Pinterest agrees!

Although this stunning quilt pattern designed by Chris Benz comes at a high price point, it is so special and fun that we concluded it is well worth the price! How can we say no to a quilt?! Wallshoppe’s removable papers include a 1/4-inch bleed which not only protects the paper during shipping, but it also makes the installation process that much easier. Wallshoppe will also send free pattern samples as long as you cover shipping.

During testing we found this wallpaper to have one of the easiest installations and were surprised at how much that 1/4-inch bleed really helped. Professionals prefer to trim the overhang off with a sharp knife before installation, but, for us, it seemed to make things easier to get the pattern matched just right. The thickness of the paper even smoothed out the damaged wall it was covering!

2024 Hot 25 Retailers List

The Hot 25 Retailers ranks the nation’s fastest-growing retail companies. Rankings are determined by increases in domestic sales between 2022 and 2023; all retail companies with global sales in excess of $2 billion, and key format leaders, were eligible.   Read more  about what companies made the list and why, or view 2024’s list below.

The Kantar-NRF U.S. Hot 25 Retailers list is the annual ranking of the nation’s most impactful and fastest-growing retail companies. Rankings are determined by year-over-year percentage increases in domestic sales. The focus on growth rate highlights hot, growing companies without being overpowered by the largest retailers in the United States.

Retailer sales and growth figures are based on Kantar’s Retail IQ integrated research methodology. Kantar estimates sales of privately held companies, franchise sales and domestic sales when the figures are not self-reported. This removes the impact of the companies’ investments in international operations from the growth rankings to give a true perspective on the situation in the U.S. retail market. Prevention Is Still the Best Medicine

Health and Well-Being Matter is the monthly blog of the Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Clinical preventive services (CPS) play an integral role in protecting and promoting individual health and the health of communities. Such services can help people recognize health problems early, when treatment often is most effective. CPS can also help prevent certain diseases altogether. However, despite the benefits, very few people in the United States receive all recommended preventive services and many access few. As public health professionals, we have a responsibility to not just deliver the message about the critical role that CPS play in supporting good health, but also work to expand CPS access in whatever ways we can.

Healthy People data show a clear decline in uptake of CPS. In 2015 only 8.5 percent of adults age 35 years and older received all recommended high-priority CPS, and that number fell to a mere 5.3 percent in 2020. Additionally, in the 2016–2017 survey period, 78.7 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 years had 1 or more preventive health care visits in the previous 12 months, but that number dropped to 69.6   percent in the 2020–2021 survey period. 

As I’ve noted in  other posts , the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem — particularly because of generally prolonged periods of severely curtailed access to clinical services — but it didn’t and doesn’t account for the whole story. Other chronic barriers include lack of awareness about what preventive services are recommended and myriad social determinants such as  cost ,   not having a primary care provider ,  living too far from providers , or lacking adequate transportation — just to name a few. To improve access to CPS at population scales, we must recognize and address the many variables that affect people’s awareness of such services and increase their willingness and ability to seek them.

The lack of awareness about recommended preventive services is true of laypeople and providers alike. Clinicians and non-clinicians can get the latest information about recommended CPS from the  United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) website. (There’s even an  app for that !) USPSTF is “an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine.” It reviews the most current evidence on preventive services -- including screening tests, counseling services, and preventive treatments – and uses that science to make new recommendations about CPS or to update existing CPS recommendations. Professionals can  browse information or  sign up for updates on USPSTF activities.  

To better inform the public about needed CPS, ODPHP developed  MyHealthfinder , a prevention and wellness resource that health professionals can recommend to individuals and families. MyHealthfinder includes easy-to-read, evidence-based, actionable health information in English and Spanish about almost 100 prevention and wellness topics. It also features a tool that people can use to get personalized recommendations for CPS. In addition, health professionals can add  free MyHealthfinder content to their websites and  help share evidence-based health information with people who need it most. 

For many people cost and access pose significant hurdles to receiving preventive care. In early 2023 the  national uninsured rate reached an all-time low of 7.7 percent, and while that’s good news, it still means that more than 25 million people across the nation aren’t benefiting from the  Affordable Care Act (ACA) provision to cover essential preventive services . Most health plans must cover a set of essential  preventive services at no cost to the patient . These services include vaccines and screening tests. Likewise and with some exceptions,  Medicare and  Medicaid offer similar provisions to beneficiaries. Helping Americans find affordable and accessible preventive care options is imperative if we want to mitigate a potentially enormous disease burden with exponential human and economic impacts.  

Because finding and understanding coverage options can be difficult, the ACA established the Navigator program. Navigators are trained individuals or organizations that can help consumers and small businesses find coverage that’s right for them through the  ACA Marketplace . Consumers of Navigator services can be confident that Navigators are unbiased and that their services are free. To  find a local Navigator , simply enter a city and state name or ZIP code into the Navigator online tool, and it will populate a list of Navigators in that area. 

Finally, I can never stress enough how important it is to focus on mitigating other inequities in  social determinants of health (SDOH) . SDOH are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. SDOH are our life circumstances , and they impact our health  in innumerable ways.

While improving health literacy and ensuring coverage for CPS will help increase the severely low rates of CPS uptake, structural inequities will continue to create overwhelming obstacles to access. Overcoming these obstacles will take  partnership and collaboration with a focus on dismantling inequities — to ensure, for example, that all people can get a quality education, earn livable wages, and access reliable transportation. Notably, community engagement and  flexing civic muscle to help alleviate inequities in CPS access are essential means to effect change.

Fostering a culture of health promotion and disease prevention, particularly at a level of trusted community, simply makes good sense. The inconvenience and cost of a routine doctor’s appointment are nothing compared to the potentially debilitating, costly, and time-consuming effects of a preventable condition. The momentary pain from the stick of a needle is a small investment that offers a big return in the form of disease prevention. The cost and time invested in getting screening tests can lead to lab results that may convey important information about one’s personal health. Having a conversation with a friend or a loved one and encouraging them to seek preventive care services only takes a few moments but may literally make a lifetime of difference. We all have a role to play — as individuals and as communities — in promoting uptake of clinical preventive services. Prevention truly is the best medicine. Or perhaps I should say prevention is better than any medicine.

What to Expect From Madden 25

I’ve covered Madden 25 extensively, from May, when I had an early preview, through June’s beta and the time between then and the launch.

I shared some new information on TeamBuilder , which should be music to the ears of customization nuts, and there will be more post-launch coverage.

Madden NFL 25 introduces a few key gameplay enhancements.

One of the most notable is the introduction of Signature Animations, designed to deliver true-to-life representations of players' unique on-field styles. One of the more distinctive examples is the inclusion of Isaiah Pacheco's unique running style.

My favorite gameplay change is the revamped ball-carrier moves. The freedom in the right stick leans into some of the cool combos we've seen in College Football 25, though without the cheesy spin and jukes.

Before the snap, there are new adjustments available to players. Icons now identify unblocked blitzers and there are more than 200 signature pre-snap play behaviors.

There are also new commentary voices in the game. Joining Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis, who appear to be in their last years as voices of Madden, EA has added Mike Tirico and Greg Olsen, along with a third team of Kate Scott and Brock Huard. We got a chance to watch Scott in action, and it's remarkable to see her record the lines that you'll hear in the game.

Franchise Mode has undergone significant improvements, introducing a new Draft Day Experience, which I've yet to vet, but it features complete real-time draft board updates and cutscenes featuring NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. EA has said that the player progression and regression have been designed to mirror real-life career trajectories, and I'm hopeful it works as advertised.

The addition of a fully functional Team Builder website for team creation also improves franchise mode. EA has assured me that Madden's version will allow you to completely customize the team's look and its players, unlike our limited version in College Football 25.

Madden's Superstar mode is back, and you can import your Road to Glory character from College Football 25.

Madden Ultimate Team has a new head-to-head mode and a Weekend Gauntlet. Combine that with what figures to be a steady flow of content, and there should be no shortage of entertainment for MUT heads. Be on the lookout for my full review once the embargo is lifted.
