How to Write Your Personal Statement: The Essentials

Your personal statement is one of the most essential – and powerful – parts of your university application.

It’s an opportunity for you to explain your reasons for choosing the course and why you’ve chosen this particular university over others. Most importantly, it’s your chance to introduce and sell yourself.

In this post, we look at the essentials of how to write a great personal statement that almost jumps off the page and gives you the best possible chance of admission into your chosen course.

What to write about

When writing your personal statement, think of the reasons that made you choose this course at Northumbria. Here is your chance to describe any qualities, skills, achievements and experiences that relate to the course, as well as demonstrate your passion for wanting to study in that field. It doesn’t have to be purely academic, these can also be social and sporting activities. If you feel it’s relevant to your desired course or shows some positive aspects about your personality, then include it in your statement.

Be sure to show enthusiasm for the course and university you’re applying for. This will really make your application all the more appealing to the admissions panel. If you’re missing some formal qualifications, you can include any similar experiences that relate, this will be helpful to your application.

Be sure to answer the following questions in your personal statement:

  • Why are you applying?
  • What makes you suitable for the course?
  • What about the course attracted you the most?
  • What do you hope to do in your future career?
  • How is your chosen course relevant to your career plans?

How to write it

Your personal statement has to be around 500 words. When thinking about the structure, write it with your skills, achievements and qualities that are most relevant to your course or university’s entry requirements towards the start of the statement.

In terms of tone, write in a concise yet natural style that reads well. So, avoid overcomplicated sentences. You’ll want to show some personality in your writing, but avoid trying to be funny or anything unusual. Your intentions may not come across as intended when the admissions team read it.

Don’t be afraid to go back and reread your personal statement. Go over it regularly, making sure the language, grammar and sentence structures are correct. It never hurts to ask for help, so ask a tutor, family member or friend to read it and give you feedback and suggest changes.

When you’re happy with your latest draft, read it out aloud to make sure it’s clear, makes sense, and gets all your key skills and attributes across.

After reading your personal statement, the university admissions team member should learn about your:

  • enthusiasm – for the course
  • motivation – to better your career prospects
  • focus – on learning

If you’d like to expand your career horizons by studying at Northumbria, then take a look at one of the many pathway courses available. Or contact us directly for any other questions.

This is how to write a personal statement for a Master's

In theory, a personal statement should be easy. but we understand how hard it is to put pen to paper. read our latest blog by postgraduate student, kristina, on how to write a personal statement when applying for your master's. , what should i include in a postgraduate personal statement, 1. why do you want to study this course.

2. What relevant skills can you bring from previous academia?

3. What relevant skills can you bring from your personal or professional life?

4. Why this specific course?

Tips for writing a university personal statement

1.  Rediscover your old statement as a reminder

2. Start early so you can take your time, and revisit

3. make sure your ending is strong and clear, 4. make sure every point you make is evidenced, 5. draw on your undergraduate successes, 6. write for academics , 7. tailor your application to your course, 8. get a second opinion.

Find out more and watch our 'how to apply' video

It can be tricky to put down in words why you should be accepted on a course, especially when you're trying to be persuasive, formal and concise all at once. Below, I've collated both what to include in a personal statement, as well as top tips to make sure your personal statement accurately reflects you, your passion and why you're a perfect fit for the postgraduate course of your choosing.

This section has two clear and distinct points. Firstly, you need to project your passion for the subject. In my opinion, the hardest part about this is being engaging and passionate, without sounding cliched or insincere.

Secondly, you need to have some kind of idea how this Master's relates to your life goals. Is there a specific job you want? Or, perhaps a specific organisation that you’d like to work for? Maybe you have plans to study this subject beyond your Master's, and you intend on completing a PhD?

The admissions team is more likely to recruit you if they think that you might contribute to the academic field, or to the specific university department.

2. What relevant skills can you bring from previous academia?

Once you've stated why you want to study a course, now you need to argue why the university should want you. At this stage, give a succinct but comprehensive overview of your relevant skills and academic experience. For example, “ During my undergraduate studies, I improved my mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills .”. Then go into detail about specific case studies, assignments, achievements etc..

The key point here is to make sure everything you mention is relevant. It's natural to want to sell yourself by listing all of your achievements, but only showcasing relevant information can act as a testament to your essay-writing skills.

3. What relevant skills can you bring from your personal or professional life?

Have you had relevant jobs/volunteering/internships? This is an opportunity to show that you’ve taken initiative to develop skills in the field beyond compulsory academic activities. This section doesn't just reflect your abilities, but your passion for your chosen career path through the fact you've dedicated your personal time to expanding your skills.

So you've said which subject you want to study, you've shown how you fit the requirements and how you intend to put your learnings to good use. Now, explain why you want to study this specific course. Mention the modules by name and how the learning formats will help your learning i.e. if there's lab work, field work etc. This is your opportunity to show you have carefully considered the different postgraduate courses available to you, and state your reasons for narrowing it down to the one you're applying for.

Tips for writing a university personal statement

1. rediscover your old statement as a reminder.

Writing a personal statement for a Master’s degree is much the same as writing one for an undergraduate degree. My first tip would be to search through your old files and find the personal statement you submitted to UCAS all those years ago.

Whilst the content will be very different, reminding yourself of the structure you used and the topics you covered is just one way to trigger ideas for what to write in your new personal statement.

In fact, I have a folder on my laptop full of all my old job and university applications so that I can draw inspiration and sometimes re-use relevant sections, whilst slightly modifying them to fit the role I am applying for. This saves a lot of time.

Writing ~1,000 words in one sitting probably isn’t the best idea. Whilst everyone has different styles of working, I personally feel that the best way to write something like this is to start out with a bullet point plan. This way you don’t have to simultaneously think about content, structure, and wording, you can just brainstorm ideas for the content, then reshuffle them into an order that makes sense and flows. Once you've sorted this out, you can spend time thinking about how you will construct the sentences and paragraphs.

Being organised like this gives you the freedom to take breaks and revisit your personal statement at a later time or date.

The first and last paragraphs are the most important. The serial-position effect in psychology shows that people tend to remember the first and last items on a list much better than they remember the content in the middle, so your introduction and conclusion should be your best-selling points.

Anyone can say that they have a specific skill or interest in a certain topic, but you need to convince the admissions team that you know what you’re talking about.

A key framework to follow is skill > evidence & understanding > outcome. For example, state you have a relevant skill (e.g. scientific literature reviews) and then talk about specific techniques (e.g. avoiding bias, using a reference manager) or specific examples (dissertation topic and what methods you used / conclusions you reached / real world implications of the topic). The outcome will often be that you achieved a high grade or were praised.

Talking in detail about your dissertation is imperative for research master’s or those which include a dissertation. If you achieved a first-class grade for it, or are predicted a first-class grade, then mention it.

Write academically (e.g. “it is” rather than “it’s”) and formally, but balance this with conveying enthusiasm and not sounding robotic. One way to test whether your writing flows is to read it out loud to yourself.

Tailor your application so that it is very specific to the course. Mention specific modules or interests/skills that relate strongly to aspects of the course. Most courses have their own webpage on the university website. This page is your most important resource for ensuring that you write a persuasive personal statement, as it will outline relevant skills, interests, career paths, module descriptions etc.

Ask someone to proofread the final draft. Fresh perspectives are always valuable. Also, it’s often easier for someone else to point out your strengths and accomplishments than it is for you to.

Overall, your personal statement needs to be lots of small anecdotes that relate to each other and can be joined up to tell one overarching story about you, to persuade the admissions team that you will succeed in the course, benefiting the university and also your own progress in life.

Physiotherapy Personal Statement Guide

Personal statement guidelines.

When writing your personal statement  please consider the following areas:

  • Justification for wanting to enter the profession – what attracts you to this profession?
  • Is it the values, characteristics, behaviours &/or variety of roles and responsibilities?
  • Why does this profession stand out for you compared to other health and social care professions?
  • Investigation of Physiotherapy as a career – to be able to make an informed career choice you must investigate some of the diversity of the profession ideally through direct observation of physiotherapists in diverse areas of practice
  • Evidence of additional skills, knowledge, experience – Transferable skills – how do your personal attributes, values, characteristics, behaviours and experiences relate to or prepare you for this challenging academic programme and a future career as a physiotherapist.

Structured Personal Statement

Tell us the reason you have chosen to study physiotherapy..

Within this answer you can tell us what motivated you to become a physiotherapist, and what you find interesting or inspiring about the profession. We would like you to show that you understand the role of the physiotherapist in different areas of clinical practice and the skills, values and qualities that are needed. Additionally, describe why this health care profession suits you personally. We expect you to give examples that show you have a caring attitude.

Describe the roles and responsibilities of physiotherapists.

In this section you should tell us about your investigation into the physiotherapy profession, particularly discussing experiences you have had of physiotherapy. Although receiving physiotherapy yourself might have been your introduction to the profession we expect applicants to explore further than this. This must include work experience or placements within a physiotherapy setting, the opportunity to talk to physiotherapists about their role and evidence of reading around the subject or accessing information on the internet. Rather than simply providing a list, please expand on what the experience taught you about the profession. Physiotherapy is very varied profession, working with different populations in different settings; you should demonstrate an awareness of this.

Tell us about skills, knowledge and experience you have and explain why this is relevant to a future career in Physiotherapy.

Please use experiences from previous learning, work, volunteering, hobbies, sport, music and any other activities you think relevant. Again, rather than a list of achievements please explain the specific skills or values demonstrated and how this has helped prepare you for study and a future career as a Physiotherapist. It may be useful to look at the NHS Constitution Values as this discusses the values and behaviours important for working in health care in the UK.

How to strengthen your personal statement

To strengthen your university application, consider the following advice about writing your personal statement.

Personal statement is the section on your UCAS application that universities use to check that the course you have applied for is right for you.

To help you stand out, our Head of Admissions has shared these 10 personal statement top tips:

  • Interest in a particular course; Explain why you are interested in a particular course and describe what you have done to go beyond just taking an interest in the subject area. Try to support what you say with evidence and avoid sweeping statements such as 'I have always had an interest in physics', without anything to back them up.
  • Experience; Detail any relevant work experience and the skills you have acquired.
  • Extended project work experience ; If you are doing an extended project qualification (EPQ), mention your research and explain how it is helping you prepare for studying at Southampton.
  • Career aspirations ; Show commitment to your chosen subject area by writing about your career aspirations related to the course you want to study.
  • Hobbies and interests ; Include details about your hobbies and interests, especially if you are in a position of responsibility or they relate to your chosen degree course. Don't just give a list, consider choosing two or three interests to talk about in detail. You should also talk briefly about the skills you have gained from these activities.
  • University expectations ; What do you hope to get from university? Mention any societies or activities you plan to become involved in. Include areas you are active in now and any that would be completely new to you.
  • Be truthful ; Never lie in your personal statement. Just be you, let your potential show.
  • Strong conclusion ; Try to finish your personal statement with a strong concluding paragraph. You could sum up the type of person you are.
  • Save your work ; The UCAS apply website times out after an hour, so it may be easier to write your personal statement in a word processer, then cut, and paste it into your application. Remember to 'save' your work regularly.
  • Check and check again ; Take your time to proofread your personal statement and make sure your application is completed and accurate. Get at least one person, or ideally several people, to check your personal statement for spelling and grammar mistakes.

UCAS asked admissions tutors – the people who read and score your personal statement – for their advice on what you should and shouldn’t do when writing your personal statement.

The most common piece of advice was not to worry about it – and don’t be tempted to copy anyone else’s.

Read our step-by-step guide to writing your personal statement

Then follow our simple tips below.

  • Do talk about why you’re a good candidate – talk about you, your motivations and what brings you to this course.
  • Do be enthusiastic – if you show you’re interested in the course, it may help you get a place.
  • Do make it relevant . Connect what you’re saying with the course and with your experiences.
  • Do outline your ideas clearly .
  • Do avoid the negatives – highlight the positives about you, and show you know your strengths.
  • Do expect to produce several drafts of your personal statement before being totally happy with it.
  • Do ask people you trust for their feedback.
  • Don’t be modest or shy . You want your passions to come across.
  • Don’t exaggerate – if you do, you may get caught out in an interview when asked to elaborate on an interesting achievement.
  • Don’t use quotes from someone else, or cliches.
  • Don’t leave it to the last minute – your statement will seem rushed and important information could be left out.
  • Don’t let spelling and grammatical errors spoil your statement , but don't just rely on a spellchecker. Proofread as many times as possible.
  • Don’t copy and paste – make yours original.
  • Don’t post your personal statement on the internet or on social media or share your personal statement with anyone including your friends and family, unless asking for feedback from people you trust.
  • Don’t worry about it – we have all the advice you need to help you stand out in your personal statement.

Columbus data breach: important information for ohio state employees.

On July 18, the city of Columbus experienced a significant data breach that compromised a wide range of sensitive information, including names, addresses, driver’s license information, Social Security numbers and/or financial data of city employees, visitors and other affiliates. In response, municipal systems and services were immediately taken offline to contain the exposure and limit further damage. However, as of August 20, investigators have not fully recovered all compromised data, leaving some uncertainty regarding the overall impact of the breach.

As the situation unfolds, it is important to recognize that while the breach itself may be beyond control, the response to it is not. Read on to learn about proactive measures to protect Ohio State data from ransomware or other cyberattacks and how to safeguard your information from identity theft.

Protect Yourself and Ohio State from Cyberattacks

The Columbus data breach underscores the critical importance of data security, retention policies and proper data purging practices. Just as preventive measures like regular physicals and exercise maintain physical health, cyber hygiene best practices are essential for digital well-being. Below are some steps you can take today to help protect your information and the university’s institutional data from cyberattacks.

Learn to Spot Phishing Attempts

Learning how to identify and avoid falling for a phishing attempt is one of the most important steps you can take in protecting personal and institutional data. Phishing is a type of cyberattack where scammers use email, phone calls or text messages to deceive individuals into revealing sensitive information. Scammers will often send malicious links or attachments that can infect your computer with malware or will bring you to a legitimate-looking webpage in an attempt to steal your log-in credentials.

If you ever suspect an email to be a phishing attempt, please report it immediately by clicking the "Report Phishing" button in Outlook or forward the message to [email protected] .

Phishing attempts targeting your university credentials that come through text message or phone calls should be reported to the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation’s Digital Security and Trust (DST) team at [email protected] .

Data Security and the Importance of Backups

It is critical to adhere to university protocols for data security to shield information from potential cyber threats. Employees are encouraged to review the university's Institutional Data Policy to understand the best practices for securing university data.

In addition to properly securing data, backing up data acts as an insurance policy for your essential files and serves as a defense against cyber threats. In the event that your files are compromised, having backups enables you to restore your data without acquiescing to ransom demands or forfeiting the data.

If you have questions on securing institutional data, reach out to your unit’s Security Coordinator or the DST team at [email protected] .

Records Retention

Proper records retention is a crucial component of data security and plays a significant role in mitigating the impact of data breaches. The City of Columbus had 20 years’ worth of visitor log data stolen and leaked. Based on recommended retention from the State Archives of Ohio, they only needed to retain this data for one year. This means an additional 19 years’ worth of personal information, that the City should no longer have had, was leaked.

By following university data retention and destruction policies, you can minimize the amount of data that can be compromised or exposed in the event of a cyberattack.

Learn more about the university’s data retention schedule and how to destroy records that are no longer needed on the University Libraries’ Records Management website .

Employees can also gain knowledge on records retention by enrolling in the “Bits and Bytes: Best Practices and Practical Tips for Managing Electronic Records and Email at OSU” course on BuckeyeLearn. The upcoming live session of this course is scheduled for September 25, and registration can be completed by looking up the course title in BuckeyeLearn.

Learn to be Cyber-Secure on C4U

For further education on cybersecurity best practices, the Cybersecurity For You awareness platform offers valuable resources on topics such as social engineering , phishing , phishing consequences , password breaches and password management .

Tips to Prevent Identity Theft

To protect yourself from identity theft, the following best practices are recommended:

  • Limit Data Sharing : Be selective about sharing personal data with businesses and organizations.
  • Caution with Phone Numbers : Exercise care when sharing mobile phone numbers and safeguard personal documents.
  • Inquire Before Sharing SSNs : Always verify the need before sharing Social Security Numbers.
  • Beware of Scammers : Protect information from online and phone scammers.
  • Review Bills and Bank Statements : Regularly check bills and bank statements for any discrepancies or suspicious activity.
  • Monitor Credit Reports : Obtain and review credit reports periodically.
  • Use Strong Passwords : Create unique, strong passwords for each account. Consider using a password manager to track and help you generate strong passwords.
  • Delete Unused Accounts : Remove unused user accounts whenever possible.

Employees are encouraged to monitor any suspicious activity related to their personal information. The FTC Identity Theft Checklist is recommended as a step-by-step guide for responding to potential identity theft.

For those who may be affected by the breach, either personally or through a family member, the university offers resources through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP):

  • EAP Overview
  • Phone: 800-678-6265
  • Online Access

The EAP portal also provides valuable articles and resources on recovering from identity theft, which may be particularly useful following this breach.
