Girl education has developed over the years. In places where there were no signs of girl education, girls have begun to enroll themselves in schools and other educational institutions. In India under numerous schemes of the government, several benefits are given for the education of a girl child.  Women’s education is essential in urban and rural areas.

It seems, till this date there has been no change in the mindset of the whole of the population. On a more serious note, above everything, we should all learn to respect girls and women first. Child Marriage –

In Indian society, still there are cases of child marriage. A girl forced to marry at an early age and often pulled out of the school at a very early age. Due to early marriage, they get pregnant at an early age and thus all their time devoted towards the child and no time left for studying.

Child Labour –

This is also a major cause to forbid girls from studying. Working and earning at an early age is the main factor to held responsible for not studying. Parents due to poverty force girls to work at an early age hence the girls forbidden from studying.

Religious factor –

In India, female foeticide is a worrying practice where a girl child is killed even before she is born that is the reason why finding the sex of a child before birth is banned in India. Even if the girl child is lucky enough and allowed to born in such societies, she has to fight for her survival where a lot of discrimination is done against her. She is oppressed and not provided with proper nutrition compared to her male siblings. She is not given any opportunity to attend school instead she is forced to do household work. This cycle of oppression will continue as long as these uneducated people are not removed from society. 

Female foeticide, child marriage, no women’s rights, and rapes are the crimes committed against girls and women. According to a report by the National crime record bureau(NCRB), India recorded 88 rape cases every day in 2019. The security of women and girl children is a series of questions which doesn’t seem to have a definite answer but only excuses.

So, the next question that eventually comes to everyone’s mind is how a girl child is saved?. The government of India is also concerned with girls’ safety and the declining child sex ratio and has launched various schemes like Beti Bachao Beti padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Balika Samriddha Yojana, and national schemes of incentives to girls for secondary education. 

The Primary Aim of All These Schemes is-

Ensuring a girl child is provided with an opportunity to get an education.

Preventions of selective gender-based abortions as it is vastly committed in remote villages. 

The schemes ensure the survival of a girl child and provide security to her life when she is an infant. 

To provide a girl child a healthy and secure environment to live and grow. 

I want to conclude my speech by saying that Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian constitution once said: “I measure the progress of the community by the degree of progress which women have achieved”. We have to take small steps and protect the girl child when she is born. After her birth, it should be ensured that she is provided with proper nutrition and education so that she realizes her dreams. This cycle will repeat as long as there are these uneducated people in society who have such a mindset. 

The government of India is also concerned with girls’ safety and the declining child sex ratio and has launched various schemes like Beti Bachao Beti padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Balika Samriddha Yojana, and national schemes of incentives to girls for secondary education. All these schemes ensure that a girl child is provided with a good environment where she is loved, cared and motivated to achieve her dreams by providing her quality education.

We have to take a small step towards a new India where a girl child is protected from the moment she is born. She should be loved and cared for by the people around her.

This could be done by spreading awareness and changing the mindset of people so that they should welcome a girl child with happiness when she is born. Providing education to all girls and encouraging them to study further so that they could contribute to the growth of the country. Last but not least is to support the women who oppose the violence against them and to create a safe environment for all the women where they feel at home. Thank you!

Prohibition and Prevention of abortions on the gender biases.

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

It made them aware of their rights and how they must make their own place in society rather than depending on a man. It recognized the fact that things cannot simply work in someone’s favor because of their gender. However, we still have a long way to go when we talk about the reasons why we need it.

Need for Women Empowerment

Almost every country, no matter how progressive has a history of ill-treating women. In other words, women from all over the world have been rebellious to reach the status they have today. While the western countries are still making progress, third world countries like India still lack behind in Women Empowerment.

Moreover, the education and freedom scenario is very regressive here. Women are not allowed to pursue higher education, they are married off early. The men are still dominating women in some regions like it’s the woman’s duty to work for him endlessly. They do not let them go out or have freedom of any kind.

In addition, domestic violence is a major problem in India. The men beat up their wife and abuse them as they think women are their property. More so, because women are afraid to speak up. Thus, we see how women empowerment is the need of the hour. We need to empower these women to speak up for themselves and never be a victim of injustice .

There are various ways in how one can empower women. The individuals and government must both come together to make it happen. Education for girls must be made compulsory so that women can become illiterate to make a life for themselves.

Women must be given equal opportunities in every field, irrespective of gender. Moreover, they must also be given equal pay. We can empower women by abolishing child marriage. Various programs must be held where they can be taught skills to fend for themselves in case they face financial crisis .

Justice Department watchdog finds failures in FBI’s handling of child sex abuse cases

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI has failed to report some child sexual abuse allegations to local law enforcement or social service agencies even after changes prompted by its handling of the case against former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar , according to a Justice Department watchdog report released Thursday.

In a review brought on by the FBI’s failures to promptly investigate Nassar, the inspector general found serious problems persist that run the risk of child sexual abuse allegations falling through the cracks as overworked agents juggle dozens of cases at a time. In one case, a victim was abused for 15 months after the FBI first received a tip about a registered sex offender, the report said.

“This report makes clear that the FBI is simply not doing its job when it comes to protecting our children from the monsters among us who stalk them,” said John Manly, a lawyer who represents victims of Nassar. “Despite years of promises and numerous congressional hearings it’s now clear that the Larry Nassar scandal could happen again today.”

A senior FBI official acknowledged that the bureau has made mistakes in investigating crimes against children but said the “vast majority of work” has been handled appropriately.

“Ensuring the safety and security of children is not just a priority for the FBI; it is a solemn duty that we are committed to fulfilling with the highest standards. The FBI’s efforts combating crimes against children are among the most critical and demanding undertakings we do,” the FBI said in a statement.

The inquiry follows a scathing 2021 report that found that FBI’s failure to take action against Nassar allowed the doctor to continue to prey on victims for months before his 2016 arrest. The FBI put in place many changes, but the inspector general says more are needed to protect children.

In a review of more than 300 cases between 2021 and 2023, the inspector general flagged 42 cases for the FBI that required “immediate attention” because there was no evidence of recent investigative steps taken or because of other concerns, according to the report.

The inspector general found no evidence that the FBI followed rules requiring allegations to be reported to local law enforcement in about 50 percent of the cases. When the FBI did report an allegation to law enforcement or social service agencies, it followed FBI policy to report it within 24 hours in only 43 percent of the cases, according to the report.

The FBI accepted all of the findings and recommendations of the report. Among the changes the FBI is committed to is the development of a training program for investigators and supervisors focused not only on investigative techniques but also on the bureau’s own policies and procedures.

Most of the incidents that the inspector general flagged to the bureau “reflected the failure to properly document completed investigative steps or involved investigations where no additional action was necessary,” Michael Nordwall, FBI executive assistant director, wrote in a letter included with the report.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin said the panel will hold a hearing on the FBI’s mishandling of child sexual abuse allegations later this year.

“The FBI’s failures enabling Larry Nassar’s abuse of young victims continue to remain a stain on the Bureau,” the Democrat from Illinois said.

Even while acknowledging errors, the FBI cited the “overwhelming” burden on agents tasked with investigating crimes against children given the conduct involved, an influx in tips flooding in to law enforcement, increased use of encrypted technology to conceal the offenses and budget cuts.

Citing one agent who was juggling about 60 investigations, the inspector general said special agents “must constantly triage their caseload.” The inspector general said the FBI needs to comes up with a plan to tackle the growing number of cases to ensure that agents are able to manage the cases on their plate.

The report released in 2021 faulted the FBI for failing to treat Nassar’s case with the “utmost seriousness and urgency,” and then making numerous errors and violating policies when it did finally swing into action. Nassar pleaded guilty in 2017 to sexually assaulting gymnasts and other athletes with his hands under the guise of medical treatment for hip and leg injuries.

The FBI has described the actions of the officials involved in the Nassar investigation as “inexcusable and a discredit” to the organization. In April, the Justice Department announced a $138.7 million settlement with more than 100 people who accused the FBI of grossly mishandling the allegations against Nassar.

I Paid My Child $100 to Read a Book

This summer, I paid my 12-year-old daughter $100 to read a book. As far as mom maneuvers go, it was definitely last ditch and the size of the payout was certainly excessive. I can’t say I am proud — but I am extremely satisfied. Because the plan worked. It worked so well, I’d suggest other parents of reluctant readers open their wallets and bribe their kids to read, too.

My daughter is a whip-smart kid, definitely smarter than I was at 12. But until I resorted to bribery, she’d never read an entire chapter book for pleasure. She’d read books for school, but getting her to do that was like pulling teeth, and on her own she’d read a few graphic novels and listened to the audiobooks of the “Harry Potter” series. None of those activities became a gateway to any habit of what I might call classic deep reading — with two eyes in front of paper, and nothing else going on.

When I faced this truth a few months ago, it felt like a parenting failure. Even though we’d read many storybooks when she was younger and we live in a house stuffed with books, I’d not managed to instill one of life’s fundamental pleasures in my kid.

Just before the pandemic, a depressing federal survey revealed how much reading for pleasure had dropped among children. Almost 30 percent of 13-year-olds said they “never or hardly ever” read for fun, a substantial increase from the 8 percent who said the same roughly 35 years earlier. Given that screen time among children also increased significantly during the pandemic, it’s fair to conclude that leisure reading is an increasingly endangered pursuit among children.

For those of us who are lifelong readers — who value our night stands stacked with teetering towers of books; who hold in our minds like friends the ideas and characters we’ve collected over the years from the printed page — conveying the importance of reading shouldn’t be hard. We all understand how reading enhances the fabric of our experience. Yet I found it weirdly difficult to communicate any of this to my reading-reluctant daughter. She claimed to dislike reading. Furthermore, she didn’t care to like it. And she didn’t see any of this as a problem. Lots of her friends, she explained to me, just “weren’t into” reading. I realized that if I wanted to communicate the joy of reading to my child, I had to clarify what the joy was for myself.

Certainly, my daughter’s having landed a smartphone last year — a secondhand iPhone with a zillion parental controls and time limits baked in — is part of the problem. Before the phone, I had a child who was like a gregarious Tigger, squealing with delight at something as simple as a new dessert cooling in the fridge. Post-phone, I had a monosyllabic blanket slug who wanted only to stay in her room with the blinds down, door closed, under a duvet, palming that little rectangle as if unhanding it would make her social life disappear. If it wasn’t her friends or it wasn’t her phone, it was only one thing: “boring.”
