5 Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs from Kerala

entrepreneurship in kerala assignment

Women in Kerala are more privileged than in any other state of our country. This state boasts of 92.07% female literacy, higher sex ratio of 1084 females for 1000 males, whilst ranking low on child marriages, infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate. However even with these positive attributes only 11.3% of women choose entrepreneurship as their career. Though the government of Kerala has initiated various schemes to empower women entrepreneurs, unwanted fear, risk, lack of motivation and support from family are some of the reasons which averts women from taking off the entrepreneurial journey.

Being an entrepreneur is no cake walk and there are some women who have taken the plunge and attained the pinnacle of success. Also entrepreneurship is not always about money, business or investments. Entrepreneurship is about taking risks and challenges to do something different, something incredible which empowers yourself and others around you. On this women’s day Kerala Insider brings out to you five women from different walks of life who have taken the decision to tread this path.

Sheila Kochouseph Chittilapally, Managing Director, V-Star – One of the most well-known woman entrepreneur from Kerala, her company V star is now a 75 crore business. Her efforts has made V star one of the leading lingerie brand in Kerala with its presence in the Middle East as well. The business also contributes by giving employment to around 180 people with 2000 tailors who are mostly women from rural background.

There is no short cut to become successful in your life. You will have to toil hard to set up a business enterprise. Hard work and consistency can only take you to heights.

Beena Kannan CEO, Seematti –  Seematti is a well know name among saree lovers and so is Beena Kannan. Her dedication and hard work has tangibly grown her brand from a small saree shop to the one of the most sought after saree retailers of Kerala. With stores opening across the state, Beena Kannan who is a saree designer herself says she is on her toes to excel as a designer as well as an entrepreneur.

Greatest obstacle is a misnomer. It depends on one’s perception. Since we are in this field since 1910, our obstacles are different from those who began 10 years ago, yet another challenge is reading the pulse of the market every year.

Harsha Thachery, Founder and CEO Masalabox – Necessity is the mother of invention which is true for Harsha Thachery. During her maternity leave, she began to explore healthy and preservative free food options when she found out that there were numerous home chefs mostly women who catered these healthy home cooked food. Seeing the potential she soon launched her e platform masalabox with 100 home chefs delivering fresh, healthy and preservative free meals on pre booking system. Masalabox is now there in Kochi and Bangalore with major expansion plans in the pipeline.

Being a woman entrepreneur, I was not greeted with sexist notions, but there actually were nice, helpful people out there ready to nurture and encourage every step of the way.

Poornima Sreelal – Founder and CEO Jobveno.com – Poornima Sreelal and her job portal Jobveno.com is a social innovation which helps laymen search and apply for jobs even without a resume. The portal is a boon for blue collar job seekers, housewives and students and this differentiates the platform from other job portals. Based in Cochin, Poornima reiterates that her job portal eliminates the resume centric job search approach and solves this gap in the employment industry. Recipient of many awards Poornima aims to spread her portal services across the country.

The only thing in life which is unique is time, because you can recall everything but not time. I believe that 24 hours in a day is your investment in life. The choice is up to you to plan it wisely. Everyone in this world have the same investment of time. Some people create miracles out of it.

Sally Varma, Program Manager, Street Dog Welfare at Humane Society International – Sally Varma is an entrepreneur with a difference. Her passion and love for animals made her pursue a career in “catching dogs” to journalism. Yes it is true. She catches dogs, sterilizes them and then releases them back to the streets. Sally says it may sound simple but is actually an arduous task as most dogs would be in bad condition prolonging the treatment time. However Sally is no way deterred by the challenges which was evident during the recent Kerala floods. Her zest and zeal towards executing her passion saved many animals from being washed away. For her efforts she has been bestowed the honorary welfare officer certificate from the Animal Welfare Board and Indian President’s medal for being one among 100 selected women who render exemplary service to the country.

Probably, I am the only woman in Kerala to engage in this occupation. So most often I am teased for what I do.

Hope these women and their achievements will inspire and motivate other women who are on the verge of taking the plunge and chasing their dreams. Happy International Women’s Day- 2019!

This paper presents the results in improvement of business plans through an education model designed from working with 826 South African entrepreneurs over a period of 1 year and extracts the curriculum that contributed to the successful creation of bankable business plans. Initially, 13% of entrepreneurs had a business concept, often based on micro-enterprise while eventually 75% of entrepreneurs had a bankable business plan with a planned minimum turnover annually of R 2 million per annum. The unit of study is the entrepreneurial business concept and the objective is to link the critical requirements of South African entrepreneurs to a valid education programme. The study found that a program based on concepts of context, business models, ownership concepts including the entrepreneurial spirit, customer and product design and sustainability created the 470% increase in fundable business concepts. This link was confirmed through a broad national research study that targeted South African entrepreneurs and that evaluated their persona’s and both submission rates and quality of submissions was used to show the efficacy of a targeted education programme.

Small business entrepreneurs play a significant role in the economic development of Sri Lanka. However statistics indicate that most of the small businesses fail, despite their importance to the economy. Researches signify several reasons for their failure, in which lack of entrepreneurial traits being a major reason. Siropolis (1994) had identified six major entrepreneurial traits to be found in entrepreneurs, while four of them such as creativity and innovation, risk taking, selfconfidence and hardworking which are believed to be most significant have been taken in this study for consideration. Pickle (1964) points out that if entrepreneur characteristics condition a business success or failure, then identification of these features is a important value as a predictor, to degree, of a success or failure.

It is widely acknowledged that the field of entrepreneurship lacks a single unified and accepted definition for the term " entrepreneurship ". This article analyzes the different theoretical roots of entrepreneurship. Not surprisingly, different theories resulted in a conflicting array of definitions describing entrepreneurship in terms of dynamic change, new combinations, exploiting opportunities, innovation, price arbitrage, risk, uncertainty, ownership, new venture formation, non‐control of resources, asymmetries of information, superior decision‐making, personality traits, monopoly formation or something else. What were previously viewed as contradictory definitions can now be seen to describe complementary lexicon terms or " sub‐ domains " of entrepreneurship such as " corporate entrepreneurship " , " social entrepreneurship " or " opportunity entrepreneurship ". The sub‐domains that arise from different theories are organized into a coherent lexicon using simple classification taxonomy. A wide array of sub‐ domain terms is thus organized into a lexicon that can be used to describe the different aspects of entrepreneurship. This article started as the author's own quest to make sense of the entrepreneurship literature. It is hoped that the proposed lexicon will contribute to a shared foundational terminology for the field of entrepreneurship that will make sense to both academics and practitioner entrepreneurs.

How Kerala’s startup ecosystem is staying afloat during the pandemic

During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, new startups across kerala were launched and existing ones gained traction in spite of several challenges.

Amidst the pandemic-induced economic downturn, new startups were launched and existing ones adapted. As per Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), the nodal agency of the Kerala Government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities, over 400 new companies have been registered since March 2020.

(Subscribe to our Today's Cache newsletter for a quick snapshot of top 5 tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.)

“Although many lost jobs, many adapted to the scenario where remote working became the new normal, something we had expected to happen in the next five to 10 years,” says Ashok Kurian Panjikaran, manager (business linkages and incubation), KSUM.

Operational expenses of the startups were reduced as KSUM waived the rent for four months and gave a two month-rent subsidy. Online events were conducted to bring more business for the startups and to showcase their products. “Several startups came up with COVID-related solutions. While the hospitality industry was down, education, health and sectors that required remote monitoring were booming,” says Ashok.

Masks, face-shields, mask disposal machines, devices to avoid physical contact, robots, smart tools for recruitment and video conferencing and Augmented Reality (AR)-assisted teaching aids are in the product line.

Alappuzha-based All About Innovations (AAI), for instance, launched WOLF AIRMASK, a portable air steriliser for indoor spaces that works on plasma technology. The efficacy of the device has been attested by Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), says the AAI team. The company, founded by Shyam Kurup, Sujesh Sugunan and Boniface Gasper, was born at the COVID control cell at the district collectorate in Alappuzha after the district reported one of the first COVID-19 positive cases in India. “We were already members of the volunteer network formed in the district during the floods of 2018,” says Noble Sam, head (partnerships and affiliations).

Ashwathy Venugopal and Sandeep S, founders of Avasarshala

Avasarshala, started by couple Ashwathy Venugopal and Sandeep S, is a platform for students to learn about competitions, scholarships, Olympiads, leadership programmes, fellowships, and arts, sports and literary events at regional, national and international levels. They say that 297 students got access to international competitions and growth opportunities.

“The start-up identifies interests of the students and connects them to the right opportunities through a personalised recommendation engine based on their interests, age and location,” explains the duo, based in Aluva near Kochi.

Ashwathy says that parents are unaware of many exciting opportunities. For instance, the Latvian Embassy in New Delhi, has an annual competition for students and the winners can visit the embassy and experience the life of a diplomat. “Two of our subscribers got selected and since travel restrictions were in place they had a virtual experience of the same.” When lockdown was announced, they also launched WhizKids Challenge to keep children engaged through daily tasks on art, science, life skills, cooking, finance and innovation.

Shouts and talks

HerMoneyTalks is another venture that hit the jackpot. “It aims at financial empowerment of women and will soon emerge as a one-stop financial platform for women. Although we started with a portal and workshops, we switched over to online sessions during the lockdown. We now have webinars almost daily and our target is to cover one lakh women through 300 webinars this year. Women empowerment is possible only if they are financially empowered and independent,” says the startup’s founder Nisary Mahesh, a former banker from Thrissur.

Team Infusory: Shyam Pradeep Alil, Thomson Tom, Aadhil Khan and Suvith S

Futuremug and Infusory Future Tech Labs were among the startups that gained traction. Futuremug, started by a group of industry veterans, identify, nurture and connect talent with opportunities.

Headed by Roopesh Rajendran, it connects job seekers with job providers through customised recruitment and hiring solutions, which include resume builder, assessment tools and video interviews to help companies ease their hiring process, says Sneha S, COO. “Since companies couldn’t go to the campuses for recruitment, we provided the platform. Early this year we assessed and delivered the results of 1,500 students from 25 colleges in the State for a company in Kochi within a week,” she says.

  • Qkopy launched GoK Direct Kerala app for the Kerala government to provide latest health updates
  • QuikDr Healthcare Private Limited, incubated at KSUM, provided comprehensive tele-medicine solution
  • Thought Ripples came up with a web application for health officials and State Disaster Management Authority regarding COVID patients, their potential contacts and testing results
  • Asimov Robotics launched humanoid robots to autonomously dispense food, medicine and other consumables inside isolation wards
  • Aerofil Filters India, which supplies air filters, started producing N95 masks and surgical masks in collaboration with Maker Village
  • VST Mobility Solutions launched automated mask disposal machine (BIN-19)
  • (Courtesy: Kerala Startup Mission)

It has collaborated with companies such as Thiruvananthapuram-headquartered Suntec to handle their year-long fresher hiring process, ITParkJobs to build the State’s biggest free job portal and has joined hands with various companies in Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram to run an initiative called SSIT (Support & Survive IT) to support professionals who lost their jobs in the pandemic.

Digitised interactive teaching aids in Augmented Reality (AR) format was what brought Infusory into the limelight. Beginning as a campus startup in 2015, it has developed an app, TutAR, which is a digital collection of teaching aids that can be visualised in AR. There is content for various subjects from kindergarten to Class XII. “In the past six months, the app has delivered over 2,000 teaching aids to more than 30 educational institutions,” says Thomson Tom, CEO. Other members are Shyam Pradeep Alil, Aadhil Khan and Suvith S. Infusory has also installed the first-ever AR/VR lab at a school in Thrissur.

Startups from the State received close to ₹500 crores in 2020, according to KSUM. “It is true that not all startups have done well, some have put their activities on hold. At the same time, funding is coming in for ventures that have shown resilience and have adapted to the change of scene,” Ashok says.

TiE Kerala, a chapter of Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), the largest not-for-profit global organisation that has been nurturing entrepreneurs, and Maker Village, an electronic hardware incubator and electronics system design and manufacturing facility at Kochi, which has KSUM as its supporting partner, helped startups to stay afloat.

If you do this, you will see everything you want to get done, and you can pick the ones that are important to you. You shouldn’t be doing something you don’t like; it will cause you to lose interest in a few weeks.

Your goals do not have to be from you alone, they can be something another individual recommended to you. Goals can be imposed by you or by someone else; it really does not make a major difference. The deciding factor is; choosing whether to it up. In the end, pick out the ones you want to get done and write them down on a piece of paper.

2. Method of Action:

Now, you need to think of ways to achieve your goals. In order to be able to do this accurately, try to keep your goals measurable. It will be much easier if you could be able to measure your progress with a number. Your method of action is the actual plan you will undertake to achieve your goal.

If for example, you are planning on losing weight, your method of action can be an exercise schedule to reflect your training. If you want to change something about the way you do something, you can write how you want to do it.

3. Let it be Known:

You should let people know that you have New Year’s resolutions; this way they can help you achieve them as well. When they feel you are losing out on your goals, they can motivate you. If you keep it a secret, the chances of staying motivated are not high.

If you let others know about your achievements, you will feel good inside and you are more likely to stay motivated to show them what you can do. It is important to keep a detailed progress report; you can write one once or twice a week. At the end of the year, you can see how you changed your habit about something.

4. Never Quit:

There is a reason why you make your resolutions at the beginning of the year, and it is because it is a one-year-long commitment. Don’t expect to achieve your goals by the end of the first six weeks, think of it as a one-year schedule.

You should follow your method of action on a daily basis for one month, and you will see your habits changing already. Just like in anyone’s life, you will have obstacles to jump over, so be flexible with your tasks. Don’t let one problem hold you down, you should get back up and follow through till the end.

5. Final Note:

A new year’s resolution is made at the beginning of the year so that it can be a new start for the year. There is no rule that suggests you achieve your goal in the first two months or six months. You take all the time you need, as it all depends on the individual. As long as you have an action plan to follow, you will be set for the tasks!
