About the Online Creative Writing Certificate

The Certificate in Creative Writing offers an innovative, collaborative course of study for those who have always wanted to unlock their creativity. Each online course is designed as a workshop in which you explore new ideas, tackle new writing tools, generate original insights and discover your own powers of expression. You create, collaboratively discuss and revise your original writing with feedback from your instructors and your peers. You also engage with a range of assigned readings and multimedia that inform and grow your innovative practice.

The Certificate in Creative Writing offers both basic and advanced workshops and appeals to students new to creative writing as well as students with writing experience who want to learn new skills. Through a series of online courses in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting, the Certificate in Creative Writing focuses on creative writing as a form of critical thinking as a way to reimagine audience and as a space of innovation. Taught by professionals in the field, our courses cultivate both individual and group learning, providing an overview of the field as well as deep dives into literary genres. These online creative writing courses are designed as hands-on, intensive study of the subtleties and power of language.

*Academic credit is defined by the University of Pennsylvania as a course unit (c.u.). A course unit (c.u.) is a general measure of academic work over a period of time, typically a term (semester or summer). A c.u. (or a fraction of a c.u.) represents different types of academic work across different types of academic programs and is the basic unit of progress toward a degree. One c.u. is usually converted to a four-semester-hour course.

The Certificate in Creative Writing prepares you to:

  • Understand how text conveys meaning across a variety of literary genres and styles
  • Explore how to use innovation, flexibility, and collaboration to cultivate a creative writing practice
  • Create, revise and edit your original writing in multiple literary genres, including poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting

Online Creative Writing Courses

Certificate students who complete four of the online courses listed below earn a Certificate in Creative Writing. Those students are then eligible to pursue an Advanced Certificate in Creative Writing by taking two additional courses.

Creative Writing (Graduate Certificate)

graduate student sitting at a table and writing

Creative writing workshops foster community, creative risk-taking, and development of voice in dialogue with other skilled writers.

What you’ll learn

The 15-credit Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing allows writers of poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction the opportunity to practice and hone their craft without committing to a full master’s program.

Like a “minor” on the graduate level, it may be taken by working professionals who are pursuing graduate studies in other areas, or by students who wish to explore their interest and aptitude for further work or study in creative writing. Any credits earned within the certificate transfer seamlessly towards the MA in English for any who might want to continue.

The Certificate in Creative Writing is a 15-credit program that is fully online. It is open to both matriculated and non-matriculated students; however, all students must go through a formal admission process.

Furthermore, the courses taken in the certificate program are not only valuable on their own but can also be applied towards the completion of an MA in English . For example, a student who successfully completes the certificate may choose to apply for the MA program in creative writing. If accepted, they could complete the MA degree within a year. Alternatively, a student may opt to pursue an MA in English with a focus on literature, supplementing it with the certificate in creative writing. This flexibility allows students to tailor their academic path to suit their interests and career goals.

Virtual Info Session: Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing

Spalding’s Graduate Certificate in Writing offers a full semester of intensive study taught by faculty of our low residency Master of Fine Arts in Writing, nationally recognized as a Top 10 program. In the certificate program, you’ll earn 15 hours of graduate academic credit and have the option to matriculate into Spalding’s MFA or MAW program. This way, you can earn a graduate certificate on the way to completing a master’s degree and for about the same costs as the master’s degree alone. Learn why serious writers choose to study at Spalding .

Writers can use their Spalding certificate studies to pursue their literary passion or to focus on teaching. The certificate semester provides the time, focus and mentoring expertise that can make all the difference in a memoir, screenplay or other creative writing project. And a certificate with a focus on teaching can prove crucial in helping educators advance their careers.

The certificate program offers concentrations in fiction , poetry , creative nonfiction , writing for children & young adults , screenwriting and playwriting . Students may also focus on teaching. Students complete a week-long residency on campus or virtually alongside MAW and MFA students. Virtual residencies, which offer the same immersive curriculum as students receive on campus, are taught live in real time by our outstanding MFA faculty. Residency is followed by an independent study course in which students write extensively and receive detailed feedback from an MFA faculty member. And our virtual Business of Writing Seminars offer insights into editing, publishing and career options. This low-residency model makes graduate study possible for students with full-time jobs and substantial family commitments.

A BA or BS is the minimum education requirement.

The certificate can be earned in six to nine months, depending on the student’s preferred pace of study .

Application deadlines

  • March 1: application deadline for spring semester, starting in May with residency on campus
  • April 1: application deadline for summer semester, starting in June with a virtual residency
  • August 1: Application deadline for fall semester, starting in November with residency on campus
