Most schools have rolling admissions and financial help so you can start your degree in a few weeks!

Once you’ve earned a Ph.D., you’ll be able to enjoy career benefits such as a higher average salary and lower unemployment . The high tuition for these programs may put you off. It is not uncommon for the listed tuition for online Ph.D. programs to exceed $1,000 per credit.

But is that really what a Ph.D. program would cost you? According to the 2021 Survey of Earned Doctorates , most doctorate recipients in every field except psychology report holding absolutely no debt related to their graduate education. By selecting an affordable school and taking advantage of resources such as assistantships and dissertation grants, you may be able to eliminate the cost of earning your Ph.D. entirely. This guide will show you how to reduce the expenses associated with Ph.D. programs as much as possible.

How to Get a Ph.D. For Free

According to the Survey of Earned Doctorates referenced above, only 15.3% of doctorate recipients relied on their own money as their primary source of financial support for earning their degree. Below, we’ll show you how to become part of the 85% that can use outside resources to fund their online Ph.D. program.

Avoid non-accredited degree mills

Before we get into the different types of financial resources available for online Ph.D. students, it’s important to note that some programs should be avoided altogether.

You should make sure that any private college you’re considering is a nonprofit organization. Many private for-profit organizations that offer online degree programs, especially those that claim to offer “free” degree programs, are actually degree mills. This means they operate like a postsecondary institution even though they don’t have the proper accreditation to award legitimate degrees.

Degree mills focus more on generating revenue than providing high-quality education. They often attract users by advertising free tuition, only to charge an assortment of other fees (exam fees, graduation fees, etc.). If you attend a degree mill, you’ll likely waste a lot of money on a program that doesn’t have qualified instructors or an effective curriculum. Worse yet, employers generally don’t respect degrees earned from these institutions, so it won’t even help you advance your career.

There are a few ways to determine whether a college is legitimate. First, if a school’s domain name doesn’t end in “.edu,” that’s a big red flag. Even a “.org” suffix is suspicious, and you certainly shouldn’t trust any online college that ends in “.com.”

You can also use the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs to review a school’s accreditation records. Look for the names of CHEA-recognized accrediting organizations . Colleges approved by one of these organizations are held to strict standards for academic quality, ensuring that students will be prepared to enter their chosen field upon graduation. This is what employers want to see.

See if you qualify for any scholarships or grants

24.2% of doctorate recipients use fellowships, scholarships, or dissertation grants as the primary source of funding for their doctorate program. We recommend reaching out to the financial aid offices of the schools you’re considering to see what they offer for new Ph.D. students, and you should check out the scholarships provided by private organizations as well.

After submitting your FAFSA each year, apply for any of these financial aid options that you may qualify for. Be sure to research these opportunities as soon as you can, as this will help you avoid missing key deadlines.

Here are a few examples to give you an idea of exactly how these award programs work:

  • Meta Research Ph.D. Fellowship Program: This award is for Ph.D. students researching certain areas of computer science and engineering relevant to Meta (the parent company of Facebook), such as database systems and virtual reality. To apply, students must send a resume, research statement, and two letters of recommendation. Fellows receive a total stipend of $42,000.
  • CAPCSD Ph.D. Scholarships: Every year, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders awards $20,000 to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program for communication sciences and disorders. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of their research dissertation plan, and a letter of support from their research advisor signed by the program director.
  • Russell Sage Foundation Dissertation Research Grants: This award of up to $10,000 is for doctoral students researching topics related to the Russell Sage Foundation’s mission of improving social and living conditions in the United States. Funds from this program must be used specifically for dissertation research expenses, such as study participant incentives, laboratory costs, and travel.

You can check out our scholarship database for more information on this subject.

Find a fully funded Ph.D. program

Finally, 21.3% of doctorate recipients fund most of their degree expenses from teaching assistantships, and another 34.7% primarily receive funding from research assistantships and traineeships.

These resources are often packaged with Ph.D. programs to form a “fully funded” Ph.D. option. In exchange for working at your university in a teaching or research role, they’ll cover the cost of your tuition. Such programs may also offer benefits like health insurance, a stipend for living expenses, and tuition waivers. Just keep in mind that fully funded Ph.D. programs tend to be highly competitive, so you’ll likely need to be a top student in order to take advantage of these benefits.

Can you get a fully funded PhD program online – the truth about doctoral programs!

It is very uncommon to find a fully free online PhD program – Universities are businesses and want you to pay money to get their qualifications.  Also, it is very common for PhD students to get paid via stipends throughout their PhD.

However, there are countries that offer scholarships and fee-waived places in their doctoral programs – check that out below!

Typically, Ph.D. programs require tuition unless otherwise stated or funded by scholarships, grants, or assistantships.

Always check the specific program details for financial aid opportunities.

What Does Fully Funded Mean In a Doctorate Program?

The concept of a “fully funded” PhD program signifies that the entirety of expenses related to the doctoral program is covered. This includes tuition fees, which are either waived or entirely paid for by the educational institution.

Beyond tuition, the program also encompasses a living stipend or allowance given to doctoral students.

Fully funded PhD programs essentially function as a comprehensive scholarship, covering everything from tuition fees to books and other necessary supplies.

While the stipend amount can vary based on the institution, it is generally sufficient to cater to the basic living expenses of the students, covering rent, food, and transportation costs.

The main aim of providing this stipend to doctoral students is to facilitate a learning environment where they can focus entirely on their studies, research, and dissertation, without the distraction of financial pressures.

Universities, including public ones, offer these fee-waived doctoral programs with the intention to draw in the best students.

These students, in turn, are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of research in their respective fields and derive a high-quality education from their doctorates.

It is important to note that eligibility for these scholarships or stipends requires proof of commitment to the doctoral degree. In my experience, this meant securing a top-class master’s degree. This reassured the university of my dedication to pursuing a PhD and furthering my education.

In recent years, there has been a rise in such fully funded programs online , offering a wider reach for prospective PhDs.

As we move further into 2023, students may increasingly opt for these online PhD programmes, making the pursuit of doctoral degrees more accessible than ever.

Countries with a free PhD / fully funded PhD – How much does a PhD cost in other countries?

Sometimes doing a free PhD means going abroad and doing your PhD in another country.

Personally, I travelled to Australia to do my PhD for the adventure and lifestyle. I was able to get a fee-waived placement and international student fee waiver for three years to finish my degree.

Here’s a summary of some of the best countries you could do you PhD in if you want to do it for free.

Czech RepublicNo FeesAdditional costs for international students
SwedenNo FeesStudy grants for some PhD students
GermanyNo Fees€300 administration fee per semester
AustriaNo Fees for EU/EEA students who finish on timeFees for international students, capped by the government
NorwayNo FeesSmall semester fee
DenmarkNo Fees for EU, EEA, and Swiss studentsHigh fees for international students
FinlandNo FeesFees for Masters programs for international students
Saudi ArabiaNo FeesAll fees covered by scholarships, including living costs
NetherlandsNot universally freeMany institutions offer free PhD study to international students, some classify them as employees with potential salary/benefits
SwitzerlandLow Fees (CHF 1500/year)State-funded PhD places with no fees and a maintenance grant for EU, EEA, Swiss students

In the Czech Republic , public universities host a multitude of English-language PhD programs and these programs are free for all PhD students, irrespective of their nationality. However, additional costs may be incurred by international students which might include language courses, health insurance, or student services fees, depending on the university policies.

Sweden maintains a unique policy that not only eradicates PhD fees at public universities but also provides study grants to some PhD students, which serves as a financial aid for their living expenses during the tenure of their studies.

In Germany , public universities offer feeless PhD programs to all students, which can include free PhD programs online. However, a nominal administration fee, approximately €300 per semester, is required. This fee usually covers student services and perks like public transportation and access to university facilities.

Austria ‘s policy benefits PhD students from within the EU and EEA who complete their doctorates within a stipulated time frame, offering free education at public research universities. International students, on the other hand, have to pay fees, which, nonetheless, are capped by the Austrian government to maintain affordability.

Norway , like its Nordic counterparts, offers free PhD education at public universities to all students, regardless of their origin. But a small semester fee, usually covering student services, is obligatory.

Denmark also practices a policy of free PhD education for EU, EEA, and Swiss students at public universities, but international students are required to pay fees, which are generally on the higher side compared to other European countries.

Finland doesn’t discriminate in terms of nationality and offers free PhD studies at public universities. However, international students are charged for their Masters programs.

Saudi Arabia stands out with its unique policy where all PhD students are awarded scholarships that automatically cover their education fees, as well as help them with living expenses.

In the Netherlands , PhD study isn’t universally free, but many institutions extend the offer of free PhD study to international postgraduates. Some universities consider the PhD students as university employees, offering them a waiver on fees and potentially a salary or benefits.

Switzerland , although not offering free PhD studies, keeps its fees low at around CHF 1500 per year at public universities. State-funded PhD positions are also available to EU, EEA, and Swiss students that come with no fees and a maintenance grant.

Top tips for finding a PhD for free – online and on-campus

Here are the top tips I would give you when Choosing a free PhD.

  • Apply to STEM programs: Many PhD (and Master’s) programs, especially in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields, are fully funded in the US. Most state schools and Ivy League schools have fully funded programs for these fields.
  • Prepare for stiff competition: Because these programs are fully funded, the competition is high. It’s not uncommon for hundreds or even thousands of students to apply to these programs each year, with only a small fraction being accepted.
  • Consider assistantships: Fully-funded programs usually provide a stipend in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. These roles involve either teaching or conducting research under a professor’s supervision.
  • Be ready for some costs: Despite tuition being covered, you may still need to cover some school fees, student insurance, and other miscellaneous expenditures.
  • Don’t consider unfunded programs: Many graduate programs do not fund students, but experts advise against attending these schools. The availability of funding indicates the health of the department in terms of research money and growth.
  • Work on your application: The application process generally starts around September to December for many accredited online doctorate degrees. Standardized tests such as GRE and TOEFL/IELTS are required, along with transcripts, recommendation letters, and a statement of purpose.
  • Avoid programs that require you to pay: It’s a common sentiment among experts that if you’re paying to be a PhD student, there might be something wrong with the program.
  • Apply for fellowships: There are graduate fellowships available for international students that cover tuition and offer a monthly stipend.

Wrapping up – Free doctoral degree program and online doctoral program – Get a PhD

This comprehensive article delves into everything you need to know about free PhD programs, also known as fully funded PhD programs, including the essential details, benefits, and potential challenges that students may encounter.

The term “free PhD” generally refers to a fully funded program that covers tuition fees and provides a stipend for living expenses, allowing students to complete their PhD studies without financial burden.

It is crucial to understand why you should never enter a PhD program without proper funding. Hence, pursuing a free or fully funded PhD should be a priority for all PhD students, regardless of nationality or field of study.

These programs may be offered both online and on-campus by various top universities around the world.

Fully funded PhD programs cater to both international and local students, including those pursuing a traditional PhD, online doctorate, or an accelerated executive doctorate of education.

For instance, fully funded online PhD programs in fields like business administration, education policy, and social work in clinical practice are available for students who hold master’s or bachelor’s degrees.

The duration of these programs may range from 1 year for fast-track or shortest doctoral programs to several years for other disciplines, including online phd studies. Moreover, many programs focus on specialization in subjects like higher education policy, laboratory research, and much more.

One of the perks of these programs is that many institutions provide a stipend to cover living expenses during the course of study, ensuring that students can focus entirely on their research without worrying about financial constraints.

2024 Best Doctorate Degrees Online [No Dissertation Required]

In the past, the majority of doctoral programs always required students to write a dissertation.  Now, instead of spending years working on a dissertation, a growing number of universities offer doctoral students an alternative to the dissertation process: a capstone project.

doctorate degree online no dissertation

Editorial Listing ShortCode:

List of Doctorate Degrees without Dissertation Requirements

Here is a list of doctoral programs that don’t require a dissertation. Instead, you complete a capstone project or a doctoral study project.

Click on your desired field of study to jump to that section:

  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
  • Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
  • Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA)
  • Doctor of Information Technology (DIT)
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
  • Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)
  • Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.)
  • Doctor of Public Administration (DPA)
  • Doctor of Public Health (DPH)
  • Doctor of Social Work (DSW)

Like dissertations, capstone projects are a culmination of your education. They usually involve some original research or some type of applied practical knowledge in your field. It all depends on the school and program.

Be sure to check out the specializations available, as well as the particular requirements for each of these non dissertation PhD programs to be sure you select the one that will best suit you and help you achieve your goals.

1. Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

If you’re an experienced business professional looking to advance your career, a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) might be the perfect fit. Many online DBA programs offer a dissertation-free option, replacing it with a capstone project. This allows you to tackle real-world business challenges, applying your learning directly to your work.

In a DBA program, you’ll delve into advanced topics like strategic management and data-driven decision-making. The flexible online format lets you balance your studies with your career. By choosing a DBA, you’re positioning yourself for executive roles or high-level consulting opportunities, all without the need for a traditional dissertation.

2. Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

If you’re an education professional seeking to advance your career and make a larger impact, an online Doctor of Education (EdD) could be your next step. Many EdD programs now offer a no dissertation path, typically replacing it with a capstone project.

In an EdD program, you’ll explore advanced educational leadership, policy, and curriculum development. What is a Doctoral Dissertation?

A doctoral dissertation, the culmination of most doctoral degree programs, is a substantial written document in which the student uses the teachings and skills gleaned from the entire program to develop and discuss an original concept, theory or practice that will help advance the field.

Writing a dissertation is no easy feat! They are typically hundreds of pages long, and students work on them for over a year, reviewing research, conducting experiments and analyzing data.

Because this project is daunting, demanding, and often requires years of research, many universities have come up with alternatives that allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and provide worthwhile contributions to their field without completing a traditional dissertation.

What Are All But Dissertation Completion Programs?

“All But Dissertation” (ABD) completion programs, also known as PhD completion programs, are designed to help students who have completed all the requirements of a doctoral degree program except the dissertation.

Quite often, students work diligently through the coursework of their doctoral program, but fall short when it comes to completing the required dissertation. According to the Council of Graduate Schools , only about 56% of those who start a doctoral degree program earn their doctorate or PhD within 10 years. Completing a dissertation is an enormous project that entails extensive research — and life, family, careers and other obligations sometimes get in the way.

For example, the Dissertation Completion Pathway (DCP) offered by National University is one example of a structured program that transfers credit for prior academic coursework and provides guidance and mentorship as you work to finish your dissertation. This type of program typically takes 2-3 years.

Is a Dissertation Required for a PhD?

Not always. In the past a dissertation was required for a PhD, but a growing number of institutions have started to offer online doctoral programs no dissertation.

Instead, students may complete a capstone project to demonstrate their knowledge and provide new contributions to the field. This may be a combination of a research paper and fieldwork, or perhaps you might do some consulting work at a functioning business. However, it most cases, it will require considerably less independent research than what is required for a dissertation.

Capstone projects vary from school to school, and program to program.

One of the benefits of non-dissertation doctorate degrees is that you can finish in less time. Check out our guide on accelerated online doctoral programs for a deeper look.

Is Financial Aid Available for Online PhD Programs?

Looking to manage the costs of an online PhD program? You’ve got options.

First up, the FAFSA – it’s not just for undergrads and can open doors to federal grants and loans. Don’t overlook state financial aid either; many states offer loan programs that might be more budget-friendly than private loans, helping to reduce the cost of repayment.

Also, keep an eye out for scholarships and grants tailored for online doctoral students. These can take into account your academic achievements and work experience.

Many universities now offer affordable online programs, designed to provide quality education without the hefty price tag of traditional on-campus degrees.  For more specific details and info about reducing these costs, the financial aid office at your university is a great resource. They can guide you through the maze of options and help you find the best fit for your financial situation.

Can You Get a No Dissertation Doctorate Online?

Yes! A growing number of reputable, accredited colleges and universities offer non-dissertation doctorate programs. We’ve compiled a list of universities offering online doctorate degrees without dissertation requirements in the next section.

Are There Any PhD Programs Without Dissertation Requirements?

Yes, there are quite a few doctoral programs without dissertation requirements, but PhD programs without dissertation requirements are few and far between. In these cases, instead of the dissertation most commonly used in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program, a capstone project is required to help you put your new-found skills to good use.

In the past, dissertations were required so that you could demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in your field. But universities have started to realize that there are quite a few ways you can do that.

As you can see with the online DBA programs, a few colleges are no longer requiring dissertations. They allow you to complete a doctoral capstone project instead. No, it’s not technically a dissertation. But you do prove that you have acquired a high level of expertise in your field of study.

Higher education is continuing to change at a rapid pace. As another example, a number of PhD programs without GRE requirements are appearing.

How Many Credits Do PhD Programs Require?

Most PhD programs require between 54 and 90 credit hours. That’s between 18 and 30 courses. This is true for both campus-based PhD programs and online PhD programs.

Let’s look at one of National University’s online programs as an example. The online DBA in Accounting is 54 credit hours and consists of 18 courses (most courses are 3 credit hours).

In contrast, if you attend a state university campus program like the University of Illinois, the PhD in Business requires 64 credit hours (around 21 courses), provided you already have your master’s degree.

Do All Doctoral Programs Require a Dissertation?

No. A wide-range of doctoral programs do not have a dissertation. Instead, graduate schools allow you to complete a capstone project which focuses on solving a real-world problem.

You can also earn your doctorate through an accredited online program if you don’t want to attend on campus.

Is a PhD Program Without a Dissertation Respected?

A dissertation allows students the opportunity to demonstrate expertise in their field of study through extensive research and an associated dissertation research paper.

In certain fields, a dissertation will be the measure of quality. This is true for academia should you ever want to be a tenured professor at Harvard. But if that’s not your goal, doctoral programs in higher education, leadership, or business administration are reputable – provided you earn your doctorate from a graduate school with regional accreditation.

Can I Get an Online Doctorate Degree Without a Dissertation?

Yes. There are dozens of online doctorate degrees with no dissertation being offered from accredited universities. The most common doctoral degree programs are the Doctor of Education, Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Psychology, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Are There Any 18 Month Doctorate with No Dissertation Programs?

Yes. Some online PhD no dissertation programs can be completed in as little as 18 to 24 months.

To finish in a short time like this, you will need to be enrolled full time and progressing through your doctorate program courses successfully. You will also need your capstone project to be approved in a timely manner. Again, in order to complete your doctorate in less than 18 months, you’ll need to enroll in a PhD without thesis or dissertation requirement.

Are There Any PhD Without Dissertation Programs Online?

Yes, a number of universities offer online doctoral degree programs without dissertation to help working professionals juggle full time jobs with their studies. We’ve compiled a list of them above. As more universities offer no dissertation doctorates, we will update the list.

It’s worth noting that while these programs do not require traditional dissertations, there will usually be a research project (usually known as a Capstone) through which you demonstrate what you have learned. Each program should detail the capstone experience requirements and the opportunities you will have while enrolled.

A growing number of universities allow you to complete your program as a full time, working professional from the comfort of your own home!

What are Fully Funded PhD Programs?

The cost of attending a Ph.D. program ranges from $12,000 per year at public universities to nearly $28,000 per year at nonprofit private institutions, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). In addition to tuition and fees, graduate students need to pay for living expenses, health insurance, and research and travel.

Fortunately, many universities support doctoral students through funding such as tuition waivers and stipends. Attending a fully funded doctoral program can save students tens of thousands of dollars. Prospective students can also research free online Ph.D. programs, which allow learners to earn degrees in a flexible format while minimizing debt.

This article explains how fully funded programs support doctoral students. The following sections explore methods for finding free Ph.D. programs, plus which expenses fully funded programs cover.

Featured Online Programs

What do we mean by fully funded.

Fully funded Ph.D. programs may offer more than free tuition. Most fully funded programs also provide a stipend, and some schools offer health insurance and research funding. However, each program offers a different funding package, so students should research the funding opportunities available at each prospective program.

Tuition Paid in Full

Graduate tuition and fees cost an average of more than $19,000 per year, according to the NCES . Students attending private universities pay even higher rates. However, graduate students often pay less than the full tuition rate.

Fully funded doctoral programs provide tuition waivers, which typically cover the entire cost of tuition and fees. Some programs offer other generous benefits for funded students, such as book stipends and reduced-fare transit passes.

Doctoral programs at public universities may also offer a nonresident tuition waiver, which allows out-of-state students to pay in-state tuition rates. Although it does not cover the full cost of tuition, this waiver can save students thousands of dollars each semester.

Stipend for Living Expenses

In addition to a tuition waiver, fully funded programs often provide a stipend to cover living expenses. The amount of the stipend varies by program. For example, Cornell University pays doctoral students a stipend of $28,000 per year, while Northwestern University offers $33,500 per year. Public universities often pay slightly lower stipends; at the University of California, Berkeley , graduate stipends range from $18,500 to $33,500 per year.

To receive graduate stipends, learners may need to teach or work as teaching assistants or research assistants. Other programs offer fellowship funding, which does not include work requirements.

A graduate stipend may not cover all of a student’s living expenses. In these cases, graduate students may need to take out loans or work during the summer. While stipends pay only during the nine-month academic year, some programs also offer summer funding.

Health Insurance

Doctoral students at fully funded programs may receive health insurance as part of their funding package. However, many free Ph.D. programs do not offer health insurance, so students should check with their prospective institution.

A student health insurance package may only cover health costs at facilities associated with the university. Doctoral students may receive automatic enrollment in a health insurance plan, or they may select from several plans during an annual open enrollment period.

While some free Ph.D. programs cover the cost of health insurance, others provide discounted rates. Doctoral students may also receive a tax deduction if they pay a monthly premium for insurance.

Choosing a fully funded program that offers health insurance can save students a significant amount of money. Doctoral students may also add spouses and dependents to their university health insurance plan.

Research or Travel Funding

Doctoral students at fully funded programs may receive additional benefits, such as research and travel funding. Doctoral students may attend conferences, visit archives, and complete summer language programs. While not all programs offer these benefits, research and travel funding can help doctoral students complete their dissertation faster and stand out in the job market.

Students typically apply for research and travel funding through their program on an as-needed basis. For example, a doctoral student who is attending a conference may submit an application for travel funding. Many programs reimburse doctoral students for research and travel costs, rather than paying the cost up front.

In addition to applying for institutional funding, doctoral students can pursue grants and scholarships from government agencies and private organizations. These awards can cover research and travel costs.

Will Your Ph.D. Program Require You to Teach?

Many fully funded Ph.D. programs incorporate teaching requirements. Doctoral students may need to work as teaching assistants under professor supervision. They may also grade undergraduate work or become a graduate instructor.

Teaching assistants typically lead discussion sections and grade student work. They often attend lectures and regular meetings with the faculty instructor. Graders may also attend class, and they use rubrics to grade papers and exams. Experienced doctoral students may teach classes independently as graduate instructors.

Doctoral programs prepare learners for teaching responsibilities through coursework on teaching methods. Graduate students may also meet outside of class to strengthen their teaching skills.

Teaching assistantships help doctoral students gain teaching experience while pursuing their degrees and secure academic positions after graduation. For example, doctoral degree-holders applying for professor positions can submit syllabi they created during their teaching assistantships. Teaching experience also prepares learners to discuss their teaching approach during job interviews.

Teaching requirements vary by program. Students researching fully funded doctoral programs should identify any funding requirements, including teaching hours and prep work. Students enrolled in free Ph.D. programs online may complete teaching requirements virtually.

How to Apply for a Fully Funded Ph.D. Program

Applying to fully funded Ph.D. programs takes time, but these programs can save doctoral students tens of thousands of dollars. By investing time in the research and application process, learners can identify the programs that best support doctoral students. This section explores the process of applying to fully funded doctoral programs.

Research Your Program

Before submitting an application, prospective students should extensively research each program. Learning details about faculty members, doctoral specializations, and graduation requirements can help students choose the program that best fits their goals. Applicants should also examine each program’s timeline to make sure it meets their needs.

Identify Funding Opportunities

Each doctoral program handles funding differently. Some schools automatically award grants or fellowships to admitted students, while others require learners to submit a separate funding application. Programs also offer different types of funding. Applicants should carefully research each program’s funding opportunities and requirements.

Fill Out Applications

After researching Ph.D. programs, students can start the application process. Most doctoral programs require applicants to submit official transcripts, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Investing time in the application process can pay off for doctoral students who earn a spot in a fully funded program.

Discover Funding Options

At some programs, doctoral students automatically receive funding. However, other programs require admitted doctoral students to complete a separate funding application. Funding applications may require additional letters of recommendation or a personal statement. The deadline to apply for assistantships and fellowships may differ from the program’s application deadline.

15 Best Online Doctoral Programs/PhD Programs – 2024

April 24, 2024

If you’re looking to attain a terminal degree but want to skip the commute to campus, an online doctoral program might be a great option for you. As our world becomes increasingly digital, many top universities have branched out into online learning, offering online PhD and doctoral programs that are just as rigorous as their in-person counterparts. Online graduate education can offer aspiring doctoral students flexibility, a high-quality education, and the option to continue working while pursuing a degree.

Many of the universities below in our round-up of the best online doctoral programs offer degrees in education—a common track for teachers looking to advance their careers. But universities across the country offer a wide range of degrees in everything from engineering management to library science. Read on for everything you need to know as you consider applying.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctoral Degree Online?

Online doctoral programs are often designed with full-time professionals in mind, prioritizing flexibility so that you can complete your degree at your own pace. Program lengths will vary, but most will take four to seven years. For students who need to take things slower, many programs offer options to spread degree requirements out over time. When applying, here are a few good questions to ask your admissions officer:

  • How long do most graduate students take to complete their degrees?
  • Are there flexible options for how many courses you’ll take per term?
  • Will you pay tuition per semester or per credit hour? If paying by credit hour, will you able to choose how many classes you take each semester?
  • Will you be required to write a dissertation? If so, how long do students usually take to write them?

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – Is an Online PhD Program a Good Fit for Me?

There’s no denying it: online doctoral programs are different than traditional ones. Many traditional PhD programs are designed for future academics, aka for graduate students who intend to apply for jobs as university professors after graduation. Traditional PhD programs are full-time, research-focused, in-person, and often offer graduate students funding in exchange for teaching or research assistant responsibilities. Online doctoral programs do also involve research, but most online graduate students are not full-time students. Rather, many students enrolled in online doctoral programs are working professionals who attend classes in the evenings or asynchronously. With that in mind, an online program can be a fantastic opportunity to further your current career.

An online doctorate program could be a great fit for you if:

  • You want to advance your career. A doctorate can lead to further opportunities for promotion and certain fields offer automatic pay increases for people with advanced degrees.
  • You love research and want to develop expertise in a topic that fascinates you.
  • You learn well in online settings, including asynchronous classes.
  • You plan to continue working while you study.

Online doctoral programs typically do not offer their students funding, though there may be scholarships and grants available to you.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – What to Consider When Choosing an Online Doctorate Program

Since a doctorate can take 4-7 years or more to complete, choosing the right school for you is a huge decision. Our list below dives into many details you’ll need to know like acceptance rate, retention rate, and cost of tuition. It’s important to consider big-picture factors such as:

  • Time to complete degree
  • Professors and mentors—you’ll want to make sure you can study with faculty who have expertise in your academic interests
  • Flexibility—does the program fit with your schedule? Do they require any in-person meetings?
  • Graduation rate—ask your admissions officer for the most recent figures

You’ll also want to consider whether you want to pursue a PhD or a doctorate degree. If you’re pursuing a PhD, you can expect to focus more significantly on academic research and you’ll need to complete a dissertation. A doctorate is an equivalent degree that is less focused on academic research and may not require a dissertation. Doctorates can often involve more career development or hands-on practicum experience.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – Are Online PhDs Respected?

Yes, online doctoral programs are just as rigorous and respected as their in-person counterparts. If you hope to earn a tenure-track faculty position at a university, it’s likely a traditional PhD program will be a better route. However, if you’re seeking a doctorate for career advancement and further learning, an online doctoral program can be a great fit. Many of the most prestigious universities offer online programs, and your diploma will likely not specify whether you completed an online or traditional degree.

The Best Online Doctoral Programs – What Do I Need to Apply?

Application requirements will vary depending on the program you’re applying to. All programs will require your academic transcripts, many require letters of recommendation, and some require GRE scores. ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. What should I expect in an online Ph.D. program?

An online Ph.D. is comparable to what on-campus learners experience. The program typically begins with coursework designed to build your fundamental understanding of the discipline alongside research essentials.

Once you complete the required classes, you will sit for comprehensive exams and submit a dissertation or project proposal. This is something you develop with a mentor.

As an online student, you'll connect one-on-one with faculty via online office hours, email, and video conferencing. A bad internet connection or technical difficulties can hinder you.  You may also need to or want to travel to meet with them personally.

Some online Ph.D. programs may provide you with a computer , while others have research resources to help you.

Much of the research you undertake is done independently and requires self-motivation and dedication. Asking questions, reaching out for help, and remaining in close contact with your mentor is key throughout the process.

Doctorate Degree vs PhD

  • Ph.D. programs focus more on the theoretical and abstract aspects of their respective fields of study to understand it as a school of thought rather than just a practical application.
  • Usual doctorate programs tend to be more practical in their study and focus on the application of knowledge rather than understanding more abstract perspectives.
  • Ph.D. degrees are often offered in the same fields that have standard doctoral degrees available usually offered in fields such as engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Doctorate programs are made up of advanced coursework, research projects, or thesis work almost strictly for practical application.
  • Ph.D. and Doctorate degrees can often achieve the same ends and should be considered more or less equal in weight.

Guide to Online Doctorate Degrees

Fewer positions requiring this advanced level qualification and reduced competition for such job opportunities among job seekers are some of the reasons behind the few doctoral graduates.

With technological advancements in almost all areas of life, acquiring education, a significantly advanced level of education has become more accessible. Graduate students now do not have to attend physical classes to pursue their dreams of developing and advancing their skills.

You can pursue your doctorate in the comfort of your home or even your office.

There was a 20% growth in students granted doctorate degrees between the 2009/2010 and 2019/2020 academic years, according to NCES. This growth has been attributed in part to online Ph.D. programs and the streamlining of modern universities.

Online Ph.D. programs are a relatively newer idea and online schooling in general has greatly increased access, flexibility, and convenience.

Students typically complete these degrees soon after completing a Master's degree in the same area. As such, and with bachelor's degrees being necessary stepping stones, students can expect their journey from primary school to a Ph.D. to take about nine years, barring any accelerated tracks and failed classes.

Cost of an Online Doctoral Degree Program

When choosing any doctoral degree program, it is crucial to evaluate the costs and salary after attending. Even though online Ph.D. courses may usually be cheaper than on-campus learning, secondary schooling is rarely cheap and not every field will allow you to make back the cost in a reasonable amount of time.

Tuition, materials, technology, transportation, housing, and groceries should all be factors brought into account when deciding whether or where to attend, and in what field you can find the most success and fulfillment.

Below are the annual tuition rates of different institutions as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Institution Type Annual Tuition
Private-For profit institutions $18,200
Private-Not for-profit institutions $37,600
Public institutions $9,400

Choosing an Online Doctoral Degree Program

Since doctoral programs require considerable investments of money and time, it is important to consider every factor before deciding on a school or program. Take some time to consider the marketability, cost, and difficulty of each program and your own interest in the subject. To reach your career and educational goals, do your best research.

Online college can provide several benefits over in-person learning, such as increased flexibility and affordability.

However, since online programs tend to involve less structure than their in-person counterparts, learners must be organized and carefully manage their time. Synchronous coursework mirrors the in-person learning experience with set class times, while asynchronous delivery allows students to watch recorded lectures and complete assignments on their own time.

Online doctoral degrees may still have on-campus requirements, such as intensives, orientations or dissertation defenses. Ensure you can commit to visiting campus as needed.

College accreditation indicates that an institution or a degree program has received approval from a third-party accrediting organization. These accreditors evaluate schools and programs for factors such as curricular offerings, student outcomes and faculty expertise. Accreditation occurs at the institutional and programmatic levels.

The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognize the following organizations to provide institutional accreditation:

  • Higher Learning Commission
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
  • New England Commission of Higher Education

Attending an accredited school is required if you want to pursue federal student aid or qualify for certain professional certifications. To check on the accreditation status of any prospective school, use CHEA’s directory tool.

Programmatic accreditation does not exist for health science programs at the doctoral level.

Here’s how to narrow down your options as you consider online health science doctoral programs:

Consider Your Future Goals

Your professional goals should help determine your program choice and whether you earn a Ph.D. or a D.H.Sc.

For example, some health science graduates aim to work in positions that require extensive research experience, such as college-level educator roles. Ph.D. programs are more research-oriented, so if you plan to teach after earning your doctorate in health science, consider prioritizing Ph.D.s in health science.

On the other hand, if you want to apply your doctorate in a public health role , the more practice-based D.H.Sc. might be more suitable.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Higher education requires a significant financial investment. Among the schools on this list, total tuition ranges from about $23,000 on the low end to more than $61,000, averaging roughly $41,160 for a full doctorate in health science.

To help fund your doctoral studies, submit the FAFSA ® to ensure your eligibility for federal student aid. You can also look for private loans, scholarships from third-party organizations, and fellowships or assistantships from your prospective institution.

Scholarships are provided by schools and independent organizations based on factors such as identity, merit and need. These forms of aid do not require repayment. In assistantships and fellowships, students work professionally with their schools to offset tuition costs.

Can you get a Ph.D. in science online?

American schools generally do not offer Ph.D. programs in science on campus or online. There are other science-related doctoral programs, however, which may feature online delivery.

Are online Ph.D. programs legitimate?

As long as they come from accredited institutions, online Ph.D. programs hold the same level of prestige and legitimacy as their on-campus counterparts.

How long does it take to get a Ph.D. in health sciences?

A health science Ph.D. typically takes four to seven years to complete.

Can I finish a Ph.D. in two years?

Most Ph.D. programs take longer than two years. Some schools, like Faulkner University, use accelerated delivery for students to complete their Ph.D.s in around 18 months. Other doctoral programs, like Doctor of Health Science degrees, generally take less time than Ph.D. programs.
