2023, GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING THEORIES, TECHNIQUES, AND PRACTICES FOR FILIPINOS: A LITERATURE REVIEW OF FREE AND ACCESSIBLE RESEARCH ARTICLES ONLINE

This paper reports on a systematic review of 12 pieces of educational research relating to the counseling theories, techniques and practices in the Philippines. Despite the few number of local literatures in the field of counseling, the researcher found few studies published in the Philippines that addresses the existence of various counseling theories and practices. The criteria in selecting the studies were that they: 1) must be authored by a Filipino, 2) must be conducted in the Philippines or among Filipino participants, 3) must be discovering theories, techniques or practices in counseling or that they must be employing theories, techniques or practices; and 4) must be accessible through free and open-access journals. The identified studies were divided into two categories which are: Filipino Values-Related Theories, Techniques and Practices and Filipino Trauma-Related Theories, Techniques and Practices.

This study is an exploration of the contemporary Filipino family interrelationships and dynamics with the objective of proposing a family-oriented counseling program which can be implemented for a better family wellbeing. Nine families from the province of Nueva Ecija were selected and interviewed to assess their overall family functioning. Data gathered were analyzed thematically. The qualitative data’s trustworthiness where squared through triangulation, stability check, and member checking. Yielded themes were then used as a benchmark for the organization of a comprehensive family counseling program. Major themes revolved around family relationships, familial decision making, and societal judgmental attitudes. Hence, it can be assumed that the contemporary Filipino family can be best understood from the viewpoints of these themes. The proposed family-oriented counseling program was designed based on the overall implications of the said themes. This consisted of responsive and exp...

In line with the central aim of promoting an in-depth understanding of counselor application of theory to practice, this qualitative study described school counselors’ articulation and use of personal explicit theories of counseling. Ten registered and practicing Filipino school counselors were interviewed and requested to analyze a vignette using their reported theoretical orientation/s as a guiding framework. Each interview transcript and written case analysis was carefully analyzed using Bordens and Abott’s (2005) content analysis method and Hill et al.’s (2005) consensual cross analysis method. Results showed an evident general valuing for an explicit theory of counseling. Moreover, the school counselors predominantly preferred a combined orientation approach when applying their personal counseling theory. However, comparison of the self-report ratings and external consensual ratings of the vignette-based case analysis exposed disparities between the verbalized personal theory and its actual use in counseling. The findings were discussed in relation to the existing literature on counselor theoretical orientations and implications for counseling practice and research were suggested.

Senior volunteers represented a significant, mostly untapped lay resource of informal social care. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the training program on improving senior volunteers’ competency toward peer counseling, and explored its impact on their well-being after three months of the program implementation. We conducted a pre- and post-intervention analysis among 60 senior volunteers aged 60–82 years. They participated in 40 h of training and performed weekly peer counseling home visits for three months. We evaluated the program using survey questionnaires, trainer observation and debriefing, and focus group discussions. After the training, peer counselors showed a significant improvement (p < 0.001) in knowledge (17.1 versus 22.3) and skills (17.0 versus 17.9). All of them met the minimum required passing level of 70% for the knowledge test, and their overall performance was satisfactory as rated by two independent trainers. After three months, peer counselo...

Purpose This systematic review aims to synthesise the evidence on behavioural and attitudinal patterns as well as barriers and enablers in Filipino formal help-seeking. Methods Using PRISMA framework, 15 studies conducted in 7 countries on Filipino help-seeking were appraised through narrative synthesis. Results Filipinos across the world have general reluctance and unfavourable attitude towards formal help-seeking despite high rates of psychological distress. They prefer seeking help from close family and friends. Barriers cited by Filipinos living in the Philippines include financial constraints and inaccessibility of services, whereas overseas Filipinos were hampered by immigration status, lack of health insurance, language difficulty, experience of discrimination and lack of acculturation to host culture. Both groups were hindered by self and social stigma attached to mental disorder, and by concern for loss of face, sense of shame, and adherence to Asian values of conformity to...

Guidance Counselors are professionals with a specialized practice that ensures the holistic development of students. Despite their crucial role, there is little research exploring the experiences and perceptions of guidance counselors in terms of wellness programs, well-being, self-care practices, and retention. This study aims to create research and evidence-based interventions to improve well-being and maintain work satisfaction among guidance counselors. Using Giorgi’s phenomenological qualitative approach, this study is based on interviews conducted with twelve (12) guidance counselors from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The findings suggest improving wellness programs, namely, physical, mental, and spiritual programs, a strong support system among colleagues, and other incentives and forms of compensation. It was also found that a healthy work environment is a key to FGC retention, which consists of harmonious work relationships, a strong support system, psychological safety, co...

This study explores the positive psychological well-being of college students and the role of schoolbased guidance counseling. The research design is a sequential design that involves both screening (quantitative phase) and interviews (qualitative phase). Based on the quantitative and qualitative findings, the study identified specific components that anchor the proposed program for promoting positive psychological well-being among college students. These components are directly informed by the strengths and areas for improvement identified in the study, as well as the themes extracted from students' subjective experiences. Moreover, implications were discussed in the study.

The quality of counselor performance can be seen from the implementation of professional counseling that is complete and effective. On the other side, Indonesian counselors are struggling with Permendikbud No. 111 of 2014, which provides professional services at a ratio that approves a counselor serving 150 students. This makes it necessary for a counseling model that has a simpler, more concise procedure and immediately shows effective results accompanied by a load of cultural awareness in the implementation process. What has happened so far is that Indonesian counselors are still trapped in counseling models born from Western philosophy, not in accordance with the cultural, social and cultural diversity of Indonesia which often results in incomplete counseling processes. KIPAS counseling is a model of local culture-based counseling, making it effective to be applied in Indonesian counseling services. The reality that appears at this time is, the need for the amount of completion o...

Guidance and Counseling or Counseling in Indonesia’s school context has been developing since the 1960s. It has been dealing with its cultural adaptation, mistrust, and low professional standards’ issues as the position is as teachers and without standardized licensure as counselors. These situations have become more challenging when Indonesia started the transition period to a democratic country in 1998. More psychological problems have developed along with the trending of population growth, free trade, politics, and environmental damages. However, psychological services are still limited including the low number of professionals. Today, the psychological difficulties are inevitable for most Indonesians who are living in the more collective community with individualistic pattern of behavior as the result of the surge in globalization and governmental system transitions. To provide counseling services, counselors and other mental health professionals mostly have adopted Western coun...

It was also found that a healthy work environment is a key to FGC retention, which consists of harmonious work relationships, a strong support system, psychological safety, counselor training, further education, and a flexible and accommodating workload and schedule. Financial elements also come to play and other long-term benefits of employment. Intrapersonal factors include self-care and personal commitment. The current research recommends utilizing the proposed wellness and retention program framework and offered mental health and wellness programs of FGC.
