Christian Dior

Christian Dior

(1905-1957)

Who Was Christian Dior?

Legendary fashion designer Christian Dior exploded onto the Paris fashion scene with designs that flew in the face of wartime restrictions and reintroduced a femininity and focus on luxury to women's fashion. His resulting success, based on the innovation of both his designs and his business practices, made him the most successful fashion designer in the world. His designs have been worn by film stars and royalty alike, and his company continues to operate at the forefront of the fashion industry.

Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, a seaside town in the north of France. He was the second of five children born to Alexandre Louis Maurice Dior, the owner of a highly successful fertilizer manufacturer, and his wife, Isabelle. When he was a boy, Dior's family moved to Paris, where he would spend his youth. Although Dior was passionate about art and expressed an interest in becoming an architect, he submitted to pressure from his father and, in 1925, enrolled at the École des Sciences Politiques to begin his studies in political science, with the understanding that he would eventually find work as a diplomat.

After his graduation in 1928, however, Dior opened a small art gallery with money he received from his father, who had agreed to lend his son his financial support on the condition that the family name would not appear above the gallery door. In the few years it was open, Dior's gallery handled the works of such notable artists as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso , Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob. He was forced to close the gallery in 1931, a year that included the deaths of both his older brother and mother and the financial collapse of his father's business.

Early Work in Fashion

Following the closing of his gallery, Dior began to make ends meet by selling his fashion sketches, and in 1935, landed a job illustrating the magazine Figaro Illustré . Several years later, Dior was hired as a design assistant by Paris couturier Robert Piguet. However, when World War II began the following year, Dior served in the south of France as an officer in the French army.

Following France's surrender to Germany in 1940, Dior returned to Paris, where he was soon hired by couturier Lucien Lelong. Throughout the remaining years of the war, Lelong's design house would consistently dress the women of both Nazis and French collaborators. During this same time, Dior's younger sister, Catherine, was working for the French Resistance. (She was captured and sent to a concentration camp, but survived; she was eventually released in 1945.)

In 1957, several months after appearing on the cover of Time magazine, Dior traveled to Italy to vacation in the town of Montecatini. While there, on October 23, 1957, he suffered what was his third heart attack and died, at the age of 52.

Marcel Boussac sent his private plane to Montecatini to bring Dior's body back to Paris, and Dior's funeral was attended by an estimated 2,500 people, including all of his staff and many of his most famous clients. He was buried in Cimetière de Callian, in Var, France. At the time of his death, Dior's house was earning more than $20 million annually.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the designer's first presentation, the National Gallery of Victoria in 2017 published The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture . The 256-page coffee table book, through a series of breathtaking photographs, provides an in-depth look at the evolution of the French fashion house over the years.

"The Full Gospel"

Charles Sydney Price was born to Mary Hannah Bee and Charles Henry Price in England in 1887. His mother died when he was four and his father later remarried a woman that Charles loved and respected. Price attended the local grade through high school for Methodist scholars from about 1899-1904. Although it was known as Wesley College it only kept students until they were 18 in preparation for possible attendance to London University. Struggling with what to do after leaving Wesley, Price joined the Royal Navy in 1906 as assistant warehouseman, but was discharged within a couple of months due to a bad knee. He would later say he went to Oxford Law School for a time, but Oxford has no record of his attendance. In 1907 Price immigrated to Canada in search of work and ended up on a railroad crew. He then moved to Spokane, Washington hoping to find work there. He went to a church service at a Free Methodist Mission and was converted. He decided to stay with the mission as a worker and was ordained a Methodist minister that same year. He also met and married Bessie Rae Osborn. The couple would go on to have 4 children of their own and one daughter from England.

Price came under the influence of "modernistic" or liberal theology. The teachings included the lack of belief in the bible as the Word of God, and a repudiation of the miraculous. He left the Methodist church and became Congregationalist pastor. Later he would describe this period of his life as one who was 'spiritually blind, leading his people into a ditch'. He pastored this way for twelve years. Price moved to California where he was pastor of the First Congregational Church of Lodi. In 1921 there was a revival being led by Aimee Semple McPherson in San Jose, California. One of the members of his church told him about how he had gone to the revival and had the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Soon this began to spread through other members of his church as well. He went to the meetings to gather evidence to teach against this doctrine. Instead he came under great conviction about his own emptiness. On the third night he was seated on the platform with other pastors. When the alter call came for sinners to be saved, Price publicly responded. He was filled with joy. He attended some "tarrying meetings" a Baptist church and received the "filling of the Spirit" a few nights later, and began to speak "with other tongues".

Price immediately returned to his church and gave his testimony. 1000 members began to hold seekers meetings crying out to God for His presence. A revival was begun. One of the outcomes was that 1000 members of the church started evangelistic outreaches. Price began to see people healed in his meetings. Denominational leaders criticized what was happening in his church. Price left the Congregationalists to begin Lodi Bethel Temple. In 1922 he began to hold itinerant evangelistic meetings in Oregon and British Columbia. There were some very miraculous healings in Victoria, British Columbia. In 1923 Price preached to over 250,000 people in a three-week period and many were healed. In 1923 he held a healing meeting where Lorne Fox and his entire family were healed. Lorne and his sister began their own evangelistic and healing ministry shortly afterwards.

Price held meetings in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Minneapolis, Duluth, St Louis and Belleville, Illinois. In 1926 Price started publishing the "Golden Grain" periodical, which included many testimonies of healings and miracles. In 1928 Price suffered a blow when his lawyer absconded with all his funds. His supporters helped to raise some of the money, but he decided to purchase a tent to hold meetings, so that he no longer had to pay large auditorium expenses. He called it the Kanvas Katherdral. It's reported there were 1000 conversions a day the last 10 days of the Belleville meetings. He continued to travel through the northwest over the next several years. Everywhere he went he saw miraculous healings in his meetings and thousands came to Christ. He counted 35,000 conversions in 1928 alone. The constant traveling put a strain on his marriage. By 1930 he and his wife separated. They eventually divorced in the 1930s.

While many ministries shut down or were severely curtailed during the 1930's, due to the depression, Charles S. Price continued to draw thousands to his meetings. In the late 1930s he ministered in Norway, England, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Italy, as well as continuing to speak throughout the US. He started to refer to himself as Dr. Price, which appears to have been an honorary title rather than an educational one. In 1939 Price estimated that he had traveled over a million miles on evangelistic campaigns since he began in 1922. His schedule was demanding. At meetings where he was the main speaker he would speak two or three times a day and often pray for healing well into the night. During the war years it was increasingly difficult to draw large crowds and Price often spoke in churches and camp meetings. In 1940 between mid-March and mid-August he preached 218 times besides holding 35 healing services, stayed late hours praying for the sick, gave several community speeches to groups like the Rotary Club, did radio addresses, all this while traveling 2700 miles by train and 8500 miles by car. In one day alone he spoke 5 times in Springfield, Missouri.

Price was not affiliated with a particular denomination and his meetings were often supported by multiple churches within an area. He had a special relationship with the Assembly of God denominational leadership and regularly spoke at their camp meetings and was often invited to speak in their churches. He was a prolific writer. He wrote several books including: And Signs Followed the Life Story of Charles S. Price , The Potter and the Clay, Spiritual and Physical Health, Made Alive, Two Worlds, The Real Faith, You Can Know God Here and Now, Divine Intervention , and Miracles besides producing his Golden Grain Magazine from 1926 to 1947. He used radio extensively and often preached from Los Angeles, California when he was not on the road. He also taught at the Southern California Bible College and was often asked to fill in for pastors in the Los Angeles area. In 1945 he felt that the Lord was calling him to spend time at home. The next two years were focused on writing, preaching locally, and in rest and prayer. He died March 8, 1947.

A Finnish Artist and the Apartment and Paintings She Left Behind in SoHo

A gallery in Manhattan is to exhibit a selection of the abstract works of Iria Leino, a pioneer in New York in the ’60s and a mystery to many in the art world.

When Iria Leino, a Finnish-born painter, died at 89, the rent on her 4,000-square-foot loft in a former knitting factory in SoHo was $650 a month.

Ms. Leino (pronounced LAY-no) lived in the same building complex from 1966 until her death of leukemia in 2022. She moved to 133 Greene Street in 1966, when the district was a rubbly artists’ refuge. Later, she relocated to a sixth-floor unit in the building next door (both cast-iron structures were combined into a single co-op, 133-137 Greene Street, in the late 1970s. The entrance — and current address — is at 135 Greene Street). As high-fashion boutiques sprouted around her and her neighbors bought and renovated some of the most expensive property in the city, she collected the refunds from cans and bottles and later relied on subsidies from a charitable organization to stay afloat.

Today, a 2,100-square-foot unit in the co-op rents for $12,500 per month. Ms. Leino was busy accumulating her own kind of treasure. At her death, she left more than 1,000 artworks that she had made over half a century.

Both the artist and her works are now objects of wonder. On Sept. 4, Harper’s Gallery , in Manhattan, will exhibit a small selection of Ms. Leino’s canvases. Peter Hastings Falk, an art historian and independent curator, who is managing the collection for the Iria Leino Trust, said, “We’re making the bold statement, which I think is true, that she’s the first woman abstract painter from Finland, in America.”

And the loft has attracted not just art dealers, but also documentary filmmakers and Finnish cultural officials entranced by its time-capsule quality.

A CALIFORNIA STORY

by Namit Arora ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 20, 2019

A cleverly written tale with a social conscience featuring themes of family, inclusiveness, racial divides, and the...

A young man contemplates West Coast life and his technology career in Silicon Valley while family and interpersonal tensions simmer.

This novel by an author, essayist, travel photographer, and former computer engineer follows India-born Ved, a disillusioned, soft-skilled marketing manager. Ved works at the multinational computer networking behemoth Omnicon. At 36, considered “late middle age in Silicon Valley terms,” he has become restless and anxious to venture elsewhere. His three-year tenure with the tech firm is already stale. Mostly unattached throughout his 15 years in America, he begins dating Liz, whom he met on an online matchmaking site. She’s a spiritually conscious woman who is the polar opposite of Sasha, a 28-year-old Russian escort who satisfies Ved’s carnal needs until real romance can break through the monotony of singledom. More dates with Liz open up their personalities further and explore their differing opinions on contentious issues alongside an amusingly silly intimate moment involving a scene-stealing moth. Still, Ved’s own internal concerns over death, aging, and whether or not he will grow old alone make the narrative relatable. Meanwhile, he contemplates his future while reuniting with his graduation buddies from India who perceive his life to be more exciting and provocative than it really is, callously calling him “too much of a California liberal, with too many un-Indian tastes and manners.” After several chapters of interoffice melodrama that threaten to dampen the novel’s pace, Arora ( The Lottery of Birth , 2017) ratchets up the intensity with a plot twist involving a visit from Ved’s parents. Obsessed with their son’s health and happiness, they share updates on the state of modern India and impart their wisdom and opinions on American culture, which contort and challenge Ved’s ever eroding resolve about remaining in the United States. A vicious hate crime assault happens while Ved and his parents venture out together. This strikes terror in their hearts, and his parents draw their own conclusions as Ved’s overall impression of his safety in California is called into question. Light on plot but engrossing nevertheless, the book keeps the momentum flowing as Ved tries to enjoy working for a sinking company he doesn’t particularly support or like while processing the abundant emotions linked to suffering an attack for being an Indian immigrant in America. Arora’s narrative is structurally sound and capably written, with a protagonist who is endearing. Ved will give pop fiction readers someone to cheer for as he navigates the precarious world of online dating, job dissatisfaction, and, perhaps most socially significant and politically relevant, the rampant discrimination and violent racism coursing through the streets of America. Indian culture is knowledgeably and effectively personified through Ved’s character as the story explores the nature of the immigrant journey in the United States: how it shapes lives and can make or break both personal and professional experiences.

A LITTLE LIFE

by Hanya Yanagihara ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 10, 2015

The phrase “tour de force” could have been invented for this audacious novel.

Four men who meet as college roommates move to New York and spend the next three decades gaining renown in their professions—as an architect, painter, actor and lawyer—and struggling with demons in their intertwined personal lives.

Yanagihara ( The People in the Trees , 2013) takes the still-bold leap of writing about characters who don’t share her background; in addition to being male, JB is African-American, Malcolm has a black father and white mother, Willem is white, and “Jude’s race was undetermined”—deserted at birth, he was raised in a monastery and had an unspeakably traumatic childhood that’s revealed slowly over the course of the book. Two of them are gay, one straight and one bisexual. There isn’t a single significant female character, and for a long novel, there isn’t much plot. There aren’t even many markers of what’s happening in the outside world; Jude moves to a loft in SoHo as a young man, but we don’t see the neighborhood change from gritty artists’ enclave to glitzy tourist destination. What we get instead is an intensely interior look at the friends’ psyches and relationships, and it’s utterly enthralling. The four men think about work and creativity and success and failure; they cook for each other, compete with each other and jostle for each other’s affection. JB bases his entire artistic career on painting portraits of his friends, while Malcolm takes care of them by designing their apartments and houses. When Jude, as an adult, is adopted by his favorite Harvard law professor, his friends join him for Thanksgiving in Cambridge every year. And when Willem becomes a movie star, they all bask in his glow. Eventually, the tone darkens and the story narrows to focus on Jude as the pain of his past cuts deep into his carefully constructed life.

The Year in Fiction

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

by J.D. Salinger ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 15, 1951

A strict report, worthy of sympathy.

A violent surfacing of adolescence (which has little in common with Tarkington's earlier, broadly comic, Seventeen ) has a compulsive impact.

"Nobody big except me" is the dream world of Holden Caulfield and his first person story is down to the basic, drab English of the pre-collegiate. For Holden is now being bounced from fancy prep, and, after a vicious evening with hall- and roommates, heads for New York to try to keep his latest failure from his parents. He tries to have a wild evening (all he does is pay the check), is terrorized by the hotel elevator man and his on-call whore, has a date with a girl he likes—and hates, sees his 10 year old sister, Phoebe. He also visits a sympathetic English teacher after trying on a drunken session, and when he keeps his date with Phoebe, who turns up with her suitcase to join him on his flight, he heads home to a hospital siege. This is tender and true, and impossible, in its picture of the old hells of young boys, the lonesomeness and tentative attempts to be mature and secure, the awful block between youth and being grown-up, the fright and sickness that humans and their behavior cause the challenging, the dramatization of the big bang. It is a sorry little worm's view of the off-beat of adult pressure, of contemporary strictures and conformity, of sentiment….
