Taro chips and taro fries are my favorite healthy snacks. If you haven’t tried cooking with taro yet, you’re missing out! Native to Southeast Asia, it’s similar to a potato in taste, texture, and appearance, but it’s healthier. Today, we’re going to share how easy it is to make homemade taro chips and fries in three different possible methods: deep-frying, in an oven, and air fryer.

What ’ s taro?

Taro is a starchy tropical root vegetable native to Southeast Asia . It has a brown outer skin that resembles tree bark with its ring pattern and a white interior that has purple specks .

Fun fact: taro leaves and corm (its underground stem) are toxic when eaten raw but safe to eat when cooked. Now, taro has a similar starchy texture to a normal potato. But the taste is a little bit more like a sweet potato, as it’s mildly sweet and nutty.

How to peel taro (wearing gloves)

Before we talk about cooking taro chips, you should know there’s a particular way to peel taro. We recommend trimming the ends and cutting it off with a sharp knife instead of using a peeler as the skin is quite thick.

To avoid skin irritation (it’s been known to make sensitive hands itch), use a pair of disposable gloves or coat your hands.

Or another magic way is to coat your hands with just a few drops of cooking oil or vinegar. Sounds weird but it works.

I recommend washing the taro first to remove dirty stuff on the surface before peeling. Once you cut the taro into your preferred chip shape, there is no need to wash them again. Because it may become a little bit slimy. If there’s excess moisture, pat them dry before moving on to the next and most important step – cooking them!

Ingredients.

  • 1/2 taro
  • oil for tossing
  • sriracha chili sauce

Instructions

  • Peel the taro with a sharp knife and then cut into halves. You may need to put a little bit more force over it.

Deep-frying method:

  • Place about three inches of oil into your deep fryer or a deep-bottomed pot. Heat this to 320 degrees.
  • Add the chips or fries in a single layer and deep-fry until they turn golden brown (this should take between four and five minutes).
  • Remove the chips with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate or baking sheet.

Oven method:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Toss the chips or fries in olive oil before arranging them on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.
  • Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown, flipping halfway through.

Air-frying method:

  • Set it to 390 degrees F and cook for 20 minutes turning twice during the process.

  • Toss them in a teaspoon of cumin powder for a hint of flavor, or use Chinese five-spice powder , or a basic salt and pepper.

This easy homemade taro chips recipe can be deep fried, baked, or made in the air fryer. Crispy, flavorful, and a healthy alternative to regular potato chips.

Taro chips are one of my favorite snacks to have around the house. However buying these at the store are more costly than your classic potato chips.

Not to worry as you can now make them at home. Thin, crispy, golden brown chips that are a perfect snack to satisfy that salty craving.

Kulolo and poi mochi are other yummy recipes that also use taro.

What is taro?

Taro is a root vegetable and a staple here in Hawai’i. There are many different varieties of taro and you can read more about it here .

What are the health benefits of taro?

Taro is a good source of fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamin E, and vitamin C.

What type of taro is best for chips?

One of the more common types of taro used to make chips are of the Chinese variety, bun long. Bun long taro has a whitish corm flesh with specks.

What do I need to make taro chips?

  • 1 large taro root
  • oil of choice for frying
  • salt to taste

How do you cook taro chips?

I enjoy frying my taro chips. I like the texture and crunch that frying gives the chips. If you are looking for a healthier alternative you can also bake or air fry these chips as well.

How to make taro chips?

  • DEEP FRY METHOD
  • Place the oil of choice in a large wok and heat to 350F.
  • Fill a large mixing bowl with water and add a teaspoon or two of salt. Set aside.
  • Using a potato peeler or knife peel off the brown outer skin of the taro.

  • Then using a mandoline set to the thinnest setting (in my case 1/8 inch) very carefully slice the taro in the thin slices.

  • Place the slices directly in to the salted water to prevent browning. Allow to soak for about an hour. This will help remove excess starch.

  • Remove taro chips from water and place on a cooling rack set over a cookie sheet to dry. Pat dry with paper towels.

  • Once dry add chips in a single layer to the oil. Fry for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown the chip edges begin to curl.

  • Remove chips from oil with a slotted spoon and place over a paper towel to collect the oil drippings. Add salt to taste being sure to salt when the chips are still hot so the salt sticks.

  • BAKED METHOD
  • Preheat oven to 450F.
  • Follow steps 3-7.
  • Spread chips over a greased cookie sheet and toss with the oil of your choice. I like to use avocado oil.
  • Bake for 15 minutes flipping half way through or until golden brown and the chip edges begin to curl up.
  • AIR FRYER METHOD
  • Preheat air fryer to 360F.
  • Spray air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Place chips in a single layer. Cook for 3-5 minutes tossing the basket halfway through or until golden brown and the edges begin to curl up.

I hadn’t thought about how much I missed taro chips until I saw your recipe. Living overseas ended my easy trips to Costco to get a big bag but there is a lot of taro here in Taiwan so making my own became a no-brainer. I don’t have a mandaline (now on it’s way) but have been using my spiralizer for potato chips and now taro chips. Also used my salad spinner after the soaking to speed up the drying process. Homemade is always better than store bought especially when it’s so easy and deep frying is so fast. Mahalo for the recipe and how-to process. Absolutely delicious!!

This recipe for Onam creates a healthier nibble that is quite addictive, infusing them with a subtle richness and a hint of tropical aroma from coconut oil

500 ml Coconut oil

Ingredient Substitution Guide

1. Peel the skin off the taro root using a knife or potato peeler. Wash the roots under running water and then pat them dry with a kitchen towel.

2. In a small bowl, mix enough salt with water and set it aside.

3. Heat enough coconut oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot, thinly slice the taro root using a mandoline slicer directly into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan. Leave enough space for the chips to fry evenly. Gently stir the chips with a spatula to ensure even frying.

4. When the chips start to crisp up, pour a teaspoon of salt water into the oil over a low flame. Keep stirring with the spatula to ensure even absorption of salt into the chips. Wait until the bubbles settle.

5. Fry the chips until they are slightly golden, then drain them using a mesh strainer onto a paper towel. Let them cool completely before storing if you are making larger batches.

6. Now, you have a quick and easy snack to enjoy with tea or coffee.
