The Metro Farm: Bridging Sectoral Gaps Through a CEA Vertical Farming Community and Agritourism Complex

This paper discusses the emerging need for vertical farms by examining issues related to food security, urban population growth, farmland shortages, “food miles”, and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Urban planners and agricultural leaders have argued that cities will need to produce food internally to respond to demand by increasing population and to avoid paralyzing congestion, harmful pollution, and unaffordable food prices. The paper examines urban agriculture as a solution to these problems by merging food production and consumption in one place, with the vertical farm being suitable for urban areas where available land is limited and expensive. Luckily, recent advances in greenhouse technologies such as hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics have provided a promising future to the vertical farm concept. These high-tech systems represent a paradigm shift in farming and food production and offer suitable and efficient methods for city farming by minimizing maintenance and maximizing yield. Upon reviewing these technologies and examining project prototypes, we find that these efforts may plant the seeds for the realization of the vertical farm. The paper, however, closes by speculating about the consequences, advantages, and disadvantages of the vertical farm’s implementation. Economic feasibility, codes, regulations, and a lack of expertise remain major obstacles in the path to implementing the vertical farm.

Caribbean islands have increasingly turned to tourism as a pathway for economic advancement, often to the detriment of other industries, particularly agriculture. The influx of millions of tourists to these island destinations increases food demand, escalates food importation, and oftentimes results in food insecurity. Agritourism, an alternative tourism form, has been proposed as a way to stimulate domestic food production and increase food security. This article provides a selective examination of the possibilities of relationships between agritourism and food security in the context of a specific Caribbean island: New Providence, Bahamas. Drawing from semi-structured interviews and site visits with over sixty farmers, we focus on the experiences of three farms that have attempted to engage in agritourism, with different approaches, levels of success, and potential impacts on food security. We find that the potential for agritourism to transform food security for Caribbean islands is constrained by demand and the consumption standards of both residents and tourists. The type of agritourism that has thus far proven to be most appealing to tourists is unachievable for the majority of farmers, has inconsequential contributions to island food security, and privileges wealthy farmers. Unfortunately, in its current form, agritourism is not yet a viable solution for the food security issues of New Providence, let alone other Caribbean islands.

Quality of life is a concept that has been discussed recently in various studies, as a response to many problems facing the compacted cities, all over the world as well as in Egypt. The purpose of this paper is to concentrate mainly on the concept of urban quality of life, it has a multi-dimensional and complex issue, the framework of this study is to find the (missing available urban quality of life indicators) in compacted cities. Although, there were design concepts of sustainable urban form in (High-density residential areas) with mixed land uses, which have a high degree of social interaction, this paper also aims to facilitate the participation of urban authorities in process of measuring, and analyzing the urban quality of life with providing an extra element for design concepts of a sustainable urban area such as greening & renewable energy. The study is beneficial for who interested in the field of sustainable development, and it gives indicators such as (GDP) (gross domestic product) which help the Simi sustainable areas to be a more efficient with urban quality of life indicators. GDP is highly useful for measuring marketing production and providing an indicative snapshot of an economy at a given time, this research uses the descriptive analytical and statistical approach to identify a quality of life indicators through study the Interrelationships environmental, social, economic and physical elements applying on compacted Egyptian cities. Finally, to raise the value of benefit from the resources and sustainable development within the compacted residential areas to get the required indicators of quality of urban life and managed.

Aquaponic is a combined organic culture of fish and plants, in recirculating systems. As the aquaculture techniques rely on the utilization of living beings with low degrees of chemical use it can be somehow defined within the organic movement ways of production. Regarding to this issue this publication provides an introduction to Aquaponic systems and provides extensive resources to draw a comparison to Hydroponics. One example of a new start-up firm in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia, working on these bodily processes and the transitional factors from one to the other production approach is shown to the audience. The following elements and considerations try to cater to prospective growers to assess their abilities to success, and the hazards that should be considered when resolving to choose between hydroponics or moving into other kinds of aquaculture systems. Thus, this document does not merely seek to describe cases embedded in different production methods in a comprehensive technical detail, but also to offer a summary of central components and considerations, regarding the process of adaptation from Hidroponics to Aquaponic and therefore, to obtain conclusions from a developing nation, able to be extrapolated to other areas.

This chapter provides an overview of urban agriculture (UA) in the Philippines. Several academic and government initiatives are described that relate to UA and have led to an awareness and recognition of UA. The practice of UA is illustrated through studies conducted on commercial vegetable production within Metro Manila and also on a peri-urban livelihood system based on the jasmine species known as sampaguita ( Jasminum sambac Ait), which is used to make garlands in San Pedro, Laguna, a municipality adjacent to Metro Manila. These studies reveal the positive impact of urban and peri-urban agricultural activities on employment and income generation as well as the promotion of positive social values. Most crop production in Metro Manila has been discontinued owing to the inability to compete with land use prioritization. The lack of clear government policy with respect to UA has contributed to the decline of the practice. Recommendations are made for the promotion of urban and peri-urban agriculture.
