Temple University Secondary Application Tip #8: For the question, “ Tell us about your special interest in the campus you selected,”  most students will choose to apply to the main campus where the Health Science Center Campus is located. The Philadelphia campus and more urban health, healthcare disparities, and research opportunities for students. However, some medical students are open to applying to the other Lewis Katz clinical campus in suburban Pennsylvania to gain certain exposure to different populations and clinical opportunities. The first strategy to answering this question is doing some research on the program website to understand some of its nuances. Is it very strong in a particular field of research, or perhaps in community clinical work for the underserved? If one of these aspects aligns with your strengths or interests, explain how you are a great fit for this reason. Be aware of the missions statement of the school and tie your strengths into that. The mission statement is as follows:

How do you plan on contributing to the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Community?*LKSOM seeks an engaged student body with a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and interests to enhance the medical school experience for everyone. Brainstorm what is unique about your background. Is it your place of birth, your family, your culture, or your path to medicine? Also consider prior adversity you have had to overcome and how that has shaped your values. Consider 1-2 of these experiences and weave a story about them which show your unique characteristics. Specifically answer how this can contribute to your medical school class; consider the effect you might have on your peers, professors and patients.

3. Tell us about your special interest in the campus you selected.

**There are 2 campuses: 1. North Philadelphia and 2. St. Luke’s campus in Bethlehem, PA. The one you select is the one where you will be considered for admission.**

Do some research on the differences in location between populations served, strengths of the hospitals, etc. and make an informed decision.

4. What are your plans for the current year – June 2022 until June 2023? 

This question requires having a plan in place for the application year. Be honest and describe what your goals are. Make sure you include something medically related that will help you grow and prepare to become a physician: reading and learning, some volunteer work, a research project, another professional job. It does not have to be grand, but some connection the medical field is probably prudent. Feel free to be honest with other pursuits for personal growth in other areas.

This is the first time I've seen this SAT/ACT question. I'm a nontrad so I took those tests over 10 years ago... I don't even know where I would go to find the results, and I certainly don't remember them. I obviously don't want to lie and say I took neither. Would just putting "Unk." for all the score values suffice, since they say it's optional (despite requiring a selection of an answer)?

what did you guys talk about in What is the nature of your interest in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine? vs Tell us about your special interest in the campus you selected.  

For 'nature of interest in organization' I talked about programs/research I was interested in and my history with Temple (I took some classes at Temple and have done work/con ed at both hospital areas). For 'special interest in campus' I talked about how I had a long history of work/study/family/ecs in the Greater Philadelphia area, particularly the city. This one got a little weird (I've done some really rando volunteering stuff), and I'm expecting to have to answer for that in an interview. Unsolicited recommendation: After you finish writing both of these, reread them both to be sure that you answered the question, they're actually distinct, and that you didn't repeat yourself. I ended up straight up cut/pasting paragraphs from one to the other because I realized I veered to the other topic.

JHU is purposefully leaving this question super open-ended, so you can write about any facet of your background, interests, or personal values that has been most integral in shaping who you are. Admissions also wants to know how this aspect of your life experience has impacted what you want to gain from attending Hopkins. Start by thinking about what makes you you . You can write down some words that you would use to describe yourself or work backward by thinking about what you hope to pursue at Hopkins, then consider how that relates to your character, perspectives, or skills. Maybe you dream of becoming a surgeon specializing in gender-affirming operations, combining your interest in science and medicine with your passion for helping members of the trans community. <p>The Prompt is Imagine you have graduated from Temple University. You are preparing to attend your 10-year reunion, and the alumni office has asked you to write a one-page essay about your personal and professional accomplishments since graduation. What would yours say</p>

<p>My name is Dr. Derek C. Ukaegbu, a graduate of Temple University. When I look at my personal and academic life, I can proudly say that attending Temple University clearly speaks for itself when you look at my resume and my accomplishments from the past ten years. Temple has taught me valuable life lessons like responsibility, commitment, and determination .If it wasn’t for temple I wouldn’t have attained the tools needed to have a successful future.</p>

<p>After my Doctorate in pharmacy from Temple University, my life, relationships with my family, relationship with my alumni friends and my views of the world has tremendously changed. Since Graduation, I have worked in various areas in pharmaceutical industries. Graduating from Temple University, I have faced copious amounts of challenges. However, my ultimate goal to become a pharmacist came true. I had the opportunity to work with people from many different ethics groups. As a retail pharmacist, I was able to exhibit true leadership and carried out my duties in a professional manner.</p>

<p>During the ten years after my graduation from Temple, I volunteered my services at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit. I witness the pain and suffering of people in need and what medication can do to reduce their suffering. I also had the opportunity to help patients and offer emotional support to their families. I know that helping patients each day helps make me stronger despite daily the challenges of life. I had the opportunity to work with the United Nations lead to Africa, Nigeria. I also had the opportunity to join a medical mission trip to South America. This enabled me to see for myself the suffering that exists in that region. Furthermore I was able to penetrate into the area my parents came from, Imo-State, and rendered as much as medical attention as I could. This caught the attention of the Traditional Leader in charge of our town and they bestowed me with a humanitarian award.</p>

<p>My educational training from Temple University and the knowledge from the school of pharmacy truly speaks for my success. I worked well with my associates and teamwork was the order of the day. As a graduate student I was able to work in internships and acquired a job. My accomplishments as a Pharmacist have created a measure of joy each day with a bright start. As a professional pharmacist, I have the opportunity to help people and travel around the world. </p>

<p>Truly speaking, I am grateful that Temple University gave me the opportunity to expand my career to industrial pharmacy. I have gone into research but didn’t like it. I hope and dream one day I will be an independent owner of my own store. Today, if I wanted to add another degree, I would still choose Temple University as my first choice University. I am proud to be alumni of Temple University.</p>

<p>Overall I thought it was good. But consider rewriting the first Paragraph with a better hook. Draw the reader in with something unusual. What you’ve written is a bit cliche. Also put the knife to it. You could cut 25% (of the entire essay) and not lose a thing. GL</p>
