"The cover letter is a claim for the role – it is your chance to highlight and match your experience against the job description and to clearly state what you can offer your potential employer.

It is a targeted single-page document to the person who advertised the position. It is often your first point of contact with an employer/recruiter to get them interested in reading your CV and interviewing you."

Your Cover Letter should show:

- Why you are interested in the role - Your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments - Evidence that you have researched the company and that you would be a good fit.

Structuring the Cover Letter:

Before you start the main part of the letter, write your mobile number, email address and Skype ID at the top left-hand side of the letter. Follow this by the date and then write Re: followed by the title of the job you are applying for and a reference number if it’s provided. Check the listing carefully as this reference is often at the end of the ad. Then follow with a greeting, addressing the person by name (if at all possible).

Open with a strong statement giving the reason you are applying for the position.

What you have you been doing, relevant to the role you are applying for. Be skills/achievements focused and focused on what you can bring to the company rather than what the company can do for you.

What kind of person are you (hint: mention your qualities which are aligned to the role)

Your motivation for wanting to settle in NZ and why you want to live in that particular area. Invite the reader to contact you if they have any questions about your application.

If a contact person is mentioned in the listing, it is recommended that you make a connection, preferably by phoning them, so that you can introduce yourself and ask some questions about the role. That way your application will stand out. ‍

In conclusion, in your cover letter you need to present a strong case for the best matched skills and experience against the job description.

Never send out a generic letter as this is one way to communicate that you have not tried to research the role or the company, and that you are not genuinely interested.

How to write an NZ cover letter (with examples and templates)

Using a cover letter template and examples are a great way to get started

Every New Zealand job application should include a cover letter.

This document is key to showing an employer you’re serious about their vacancy, and for demonstrating what you bring to the table . Despite its importance, many people aren’t sure how to write a cover letter – and their applications suffer as a result.

That’s why we’ve created this guide, giving you advice on everything from what to include, to how to lay it out.

We’ve also snuck in a few examples to make life even easier for you … aren’t we nice?

Cover letters vs. CVs: what’s the difference?

To understand the role cover letters play in job applications, it’s important to realise how they differ from CVs:

1. Purpose:

CVs give a broad picture of you as an applicant – providing details such as educational background and employment history . By contrast, a cover letter targets why you want this specific role, and how your skills and experience make you a great candidate.

While there will be areas of overlap as you select qualifications or abilities to draw out in your cover letter, it definitely should not be an elongated version of your CV.

An NZ cover letter should be no longer than one page, while CVs are usually between one and two.

The most obvious visual difference between these documents and CVs hinges around bullet points.

While your CV should be a bullet point bonanza, cover letters favour full sentences. That’s not to say you can’t have any bullets in a cover letter, just use them more sparingly.

It’s not always easy to know what to put in your cover letter.

You should include a cover letter with every job application.

What to include in a cover letter

1. your contact info, the date and the business’ address.

At the top of your cover letter should be:

Your full name, contact details and home address
The date you submit the application
The business’ postal address

It should look like this:

2. Your opener

People worry about how to start a cover letter , but there’s a simple formula and structure for getting this right:

Make it personal : start with ‘dear’, and address it to a person – i.e. the hiring manager. If their name isn’t in the job listing, try a good old fashioned stalk of the company website, or ring the business and find out. ‘To whom it may concern’ is a no go.

Make it clear : organisations often list multiple vacancies at a time, so make it obvious which position you’re applying for. A sentence like, ‘I’m writing to apply for the Marketing Assistant role, as advertised on Trade Me Jobs’, will do the trick.

Make it punchy : next, add a snappy one-liner summing up why you’re interested in the role and what you’d bring to their business. Remember, you can go into more detail in the interview itself. For example:

3. Why them

A common cover letter mistake is to only focus on yourself. Before choosing you, employers want to know why you’re choosing them. This helps sort candidates who are genuinely passionate about their organisation from those who are mass applying to anything and everything.

Warning : this section is not about inflating the hiring manager's ego by flattering the company – be positive, but be thoughtful.

Your cover letter should tell the hiring manager why you want to work there.

Now, it’s time to sell yourself.

This section of your cover letter is where you highlight your most relevant skills and experience.

You can draw on anything from previous work experience to certificates and qualifications. The important bit is linking whatever you mention to the job – simply listing skills is not the answer.

To do this effectively, you need to carefully study the job ad and identify what capabilities the employer values most. If your Trade Me Jobs Profile is up-to-date, you can then quickly skim your skills and experience to find those which most closely match the job description.

Top tip: the more detail you can give, the better. Helped raise sales? Great. Helped raise sales by 6%? Even better.

Use your cover letter to highlight core relevant skills.

If you want to add some extra skills or information to this section, a bullet point list is a good option. Note : only do this after introducing your headline examples in full sentence form, as above, and keep your list to three or four concise bullets.

5. Signing off

The end of your cover letter should (politely) prompt the reader to get in touch with you to arrange the next steps. Make sure you end on a high, and continue the energy from earlier in your closing sentence, for example:

Sign off your cover letter with a call to action.

How to format a cover letter

With your content sorted, it’s now about nailing the visuals. Cover letters are usually easier than CVs in this regard, as they’re laid out like a traditional letter. However, there are a few things to bear in mind:

What font should I use? Keep it simple, and the same as on your CV. If your font is hard to read, or too small, the letter will end up in the wrong pile.
How long should a cover letter be? New Zealand cover letters should be under one page long.
Should I use paragraphs? Would you read huge, unbroken chunks of text? We doubt it, so make sure to break up your cover letters into paragraphs.
What are the correct cover letter margins? Leave these at their default setting so your cover letter has plenty of blank space, and doesn’t look crowded.

All done? Not quite.

Perhaps the most important stage of cover letter writing is proofreading. After all that hard work, you don’t want a few silly typos or poor punctuation letting you down.

So check it yourself, then get someone else to have a look, then have a final glance.

Once you’re happy, it’s time to attach it to your application, and hit send.

What to include in your CV

New Zealand employers only want to see relevant information on your CV. They do not need a list of every job or course you have ever done.

Employers are most interested in your:

technical and personal skills
work experience
qualifications and education
community and volunteer experience.

They also like to see some evidence of how you have applied your skills.

It is best to only include relevant details of your skills and experience and to give brief examples of how you have used your skills in the past.

Local employers may not be familiar with the organisations you have worked for overseas. It helps if you include a short description of organisations you list on your CV, like:

the number of employees
the location
a website link so they can get more information if they need it.

Make a good impression

It is important to make a good impression of yourself as a potential employee, but not to appear too boastful about your achievements.

Many people make the mistake of writing a CV and using it for every job application. New Zealand employers expect you to adjust your CV to suit each job so that it highlights the skills that are relevant to the job.

Your cover letter needs to show:

Remember to:

check your cover letter for spelling and grammar

To make your cover letter look good:

use a black, easy to read font in one size
use simple language and be warm and friendly
use positive phrases like 'I have' and 'I can'
use bullet points to list information
avoid weak words like 'some knowledge' or 'fairly experienced'
avoid starting each sentence with 'I'
avoid repeating your whole CV
avoid photos or images
keep your letter to one page.

1. Contact details

Start with your contact details. For example:

Then the date you send the cover letter. For example:

10 January 2019

Then the advertiser's name, organisation, address and email. For example:

Reginald Farnham ABC Sales 85 Tuesday Road Papakura Auckland 7777 [email protected]

Start with 'Dear ...'. Use the name given in the job advertisement. If there isn't one, call the organisation to find out the name or use the name of the organisation.

Under the greeting put the position details. For example:

I am writing to apply for the Sales Assistant vacancy (vacancy number 40568) at ABC Sales, as advertised on Trade Me.

3. Explain your interest in the job

In the next paragraph, explain your interest in the job and how you will fit into the organisation. Be enthusiastic and use positive language.

I have been a customer of ABC Sales for several years and have always been impressed by the quality of service I have received. I am enthusiastic and professional, and I believe I would fit well into the company's team culture and contribute to the ongoing success of the sales department.

4. Link your skills and experience to the job

In one paragraph link your experience, skills and qualifications to the job. Use two or three key examples.

Research the employer online and show how your skills can be useful to the employer.

Employment certificate, financial documents, and income tax return (ITR) are the staples of most visa applications. But there is one document that is usually overlooked — the cover letter.

A cover letter isn’t always a requirement when applying for a visa. However, it’s something that we often recommend to add to your pile of documents, especially if there is no interview and you have some explaining to do.

You see, sometimes, things don’t always fit the mold perfectly. There are cases wherein you can’t provide the exact document needed, but you have a very good alternative. Or maybe you just can’t provide something at all, but you have a perfectly valid reason. Or perhaps you’re traveling with a group or for a special purpose. These instances could probably benefit from a well-crafted explanation to give the visa officer a clearer picture of your situation.

When I apply for a visa, I usually submit a cover letter regardless of whether or not it’s one of the requirements. I always want to give a summary of my application and clarify some aspects that may be prone to misinterpretation.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

What should be in a cover letter?

For me, a good cover letter must be able to provide the following:

A short introduction about yourself.
Your travel dates and the purpose of your trip
If traveling with a group: your companions and your relationship with them
If sponsored: your sponsor’s name, your relationship with them, and the reason why they are willing to sponsor you
If you’re missing some requirements: the reason why you won’t be able to provide them and the alternatives you are submitting instead
If applying for a double entry or multiple entry visa: the reason why you need to be allowed more than one entry
A quick rundown of the destinations you will be visiting
A quick summary of your travel history (if any), highlighting that you have NEVER violated visa rules in the past
A promise to return to your home country in time

Looks like a lot, huh? But here’s the thing: According to a couple of friends who used to work as visa officers at strict embassies, they usually had very little time to assess each application. Hence, if you’re going to make a cover letter, go straight to the point . One page should be enough. The key is being concise — finding the balance between giving enough information and keeping it short and sweet.

Here are some samples. I intentionally used complicated situations to give you an idea how I usually explain them. If they don’t apply to you, feel free to modify these to match your case. Please use this only as a model for your own cover letter. Please do not copy-paste the whole thing without adjustments.

Hello, I will be applying for a Japan visa and will submit a cover letter din. I have a few questions:

If I am traveling with friends pero we will be submitting individual applications, do I need to include that in the cover letter na I am with them on this trip?
Do you need to submit all your savings account o kahit isa nalang?
Plan ko rin sana (dahil nabasa ko sa ibang posts nyo hehe) na payroll and savings account ipasa, pero kung nililipat ko rin naman yung laman ng payroll sa savings, need ko pa ba isubmit yung payroll account?
Sa ibang Japan visa application na napanuod ko, nagsusubmit sila ng bank certificate at bank statement. Do I need to do that?
If yes, need ko ba explain sa cover letter ko na tinatransfer ko sa digital bank muna yung pera saka ko tinatransfer sa savings account? (kasi baka makita, if may bank statement, na nanggaling sa ganitong account yung pumasok na pera)

I plan to visit Canada and have started my visa application. I selected visit friend for purpose instead of tourism as I would like to be fully honest with my application. My very purpose is to be with my boyfriend and meet his family and friends. Touring comes as a bonus. Would it be fine to add captions or narrations on the pdf document together with our pictures as proof? I also have our hotel and tour bookings and his boarding passes on the two times that he has visited me here in PH. This is the Proof of Relationship section on the application visa.

Covering letters are a unique selling tool when approaching a prospective employer directly, and are vitally important to applications sent by overseas candidates. This is your chance to capture the attention of a New Zealand employer and demonstrate the qualities that set you apart from the other applicants.

KEEP IT BRIEF

Your cover letter should ideally not exceed one A4 side, with well-spaced lines.

TAILOR EACH COVER LETTER TOWARDS THE JOB LISTING

Wherever possible, account point-by-point for each of the requirements listed by the employers and detail how you are qualified to meet these requirements.

BE CLEAR AND CONCISE

Use strong, active verbs that demonstrate actions and accomplishments, for example, ‘organise’ and ‘supervise.’

FIND OUT THE DETAILS OF THE CONTACT PERSON

Do a bit of research, and, if a name is not supplied try to find out who the application is going to. Do not forget to include your own contact details, though these should be on your CV regardless.

THINK ABOUT THE STRUCTURE

Your letter should include an introduction and identification of the position (for example, the reference number used in the job advert), relevant qualifications and your current position, and a summary of how you meet their core skill set.

ADDRESS THE EMPLOYER’S ESSENTIAL CRITERIA/CORE SKILLSET

Identify your skills, experience and attributes that match the employer’s criteria. It can sometimes be helpful to use the same headings that they have supplied, with a short sentence or two addressing each one. Look for keywords that reveal what attributes they are looking for, and show how you embody them. If you can demonstrate that you meet the essential criteria, you will greatly increase your chances of an interview.

PROOFREAD YOUR LETTER PROPERLY

Again, this should go without saying. Have a trusted friend or colleague to review both your CV and cover letter, prior to applying. It is vital that there are no errors if you want to be taken seriously.

As of 1 October, 2019 anyone from the 60 waiver countries listed will now have to pay for an NZeTA to enter New Zealand. That includes Malaysia! More details below under requirements for a visitor visa to New Zealand.

The maximum number of months you can stay in New Zealand with this visa is 3 months for non-UK citizens. UK citizens get to stay up to 6 months with this visa.

You don’t need any documentation except your passport and a return ticket for this visa when you arrive at the immigration in New Zealand.

And if all goes well, you should get a stamp in your passport from the respective officer.

For this visa, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you fill out your arrival card as honestly as possible.

It’s possible to extend your stay in New Zealand (e.g. after your 6 months’ working holiday is complete) with this visa.
However, if you’re already in New Zealand: y ou’ll have to first fly out of the country first and show proof of sufficient funds (for up to 3 months, including your return ticket or the ticket receipt).

But this blog post is mainly focusing on the other type of visitor visa:

Visitor Visa

This visa cost me $165 NZD back in 2018 and lets you stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months.

Note: As of 17th May 2022, the cost of applying for the visitor visa increased to $246.

Provided that you have not already exceeded a total of 9 months’ stay in New Zealand in an 18 month period.

In contrast to the previous Visitor Visa (Country Waiver):

You need all sorts of paperwork as evidence that you will be a genuine visitor.

Don’t put this off to the last minute because it really does take the immigration office a long time to process applications for the Visitor Visa.

For your reference, I submitted my application in May 21, 2018 and got the Visa in June 13, 2018 – a total of 18 working days.

If rejected, you must apply for the Visa again (and pay$246 fee again – ouch).
Read the guidelines on the official site carefully before applying.
Try to apply at least a month ahead of your intended start date too.

Requirements For Visitor Visa New Zealand

What is this the NZeTA?

All would-be visitors (including transit) to New Zealand must check if they need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before going to New Zealand.

Besides this NZeTA, you may have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) too.

Who’s applicable?

Anyone visiting or in-transit from a visa waiver country (see the list of visa waiver countries )
Permanent residents of Australia
Anyone travelling on a passport from a transit visa waiver country who will be in transit through Auckland International Airport on the way out to another country
Even cruise ship passengers from visa waiver countries must have an NZeTA.

Who’s not applicable for the NZeTa?

Anyone who needs a visa for New Zealand or is already holding a valid one (this includes a Permanent Resident Visa)
New Zealand citizens
Australian citizen travelling with Australia passport

How do I apply for the NZeTa?

There are 2 methods:

NZeTA online request system on immigration.govt.nz
Download the immigration App and apply through there.

When to apply for the NZeTa:

It takes up to 72 hours for your NZeTA to be approved so do so way before your trip to avoid being barred from boarding the plane!

How much will application cost?

The cost of the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) will be NZD $35 and will be charged together in the same transaction as your NZeTA:

If you apply online , it will be NZD $12 + NZD $35 = NZD $47

And if you apply through their app , it will be NZD $9 + NZD $35 = NZD $44

How long are my NZeTA and IVL valid for?

They are valid for multiple visits and up to a maximum of 2 years .

Criteria You Have To Meet For A Visitor Visa

Be able to prove your identity
Have good health or acknowledge (and prove) that you will pay for your own health care
Most importantly, you have to be a genuine tourist – no funny business or working under table.
You can apply for your family in the same application but you have to pay the fees per head
Prove that you have sufficient funds needed to travel around and a ticket to get out of New Zealand later (or have evidence of a sponsorship)
No major criminal offenses or previous denial to a visa from another country – you might be able to talk your way out of this one through your bona fide but there is no guarantee

These are the things you have to upload together with your online application on the official New Zealand immigration website:

Tip: The client number is not the visa waiver stamp number on your passport in case you are wondering. You can leave this blank unless you do have one from a previous application.

Bona fide letter
Chest x-ray documentation – it cost me $160 to do it in Auckland (back in 2018). If it’s cheaper in your own country, do that instead. Check the official website for the list of panel clinics in your country.
Resume or CV – it goes without saying that this should be your most recent resume
Bank statement – at least $1000 NZD** for every month (per person and including accommodation) you intend to stay (not including the money for the flight tickets!)
A scanned softcopy of your passport (make sure your passport validity covers the duration of your intended stay!)
Passport photo – Save some money and do this in your own country.

It cost me $25 NZD to get it done at the post office in a small town in New Zealand. Check out the passport photo do’s and don’t’s on the official website first !

**Alternatively, you just need to show that you have:

At least $400 NZD per month per person together with proof of payment for your accommodation in New Zealand
A financial sponsor to cover you during your stay in New Zealand

More Information On The Chest X-ray Requirement

The clinic submitted the x-ray form to the immigration office on my behalf.
Note that your x-ray must come from a panel clinic listed on the official New Zealand immigration website.
When I last checked, there were only two acceptable clinics for Malaysia. One was a clinic in Kuala Lumpur and another one was located in Penang.
Auckland however, has many panel clinics – the one I went to was walking distance from my rented house.

What Is A Bonafide?

To start with, a bona fide can be a cover letter that explains your background and purpose of visiting the country that you wish to apply for.

It may also include your future plans after your intended time in the country you visit. And that is the case if you want to apply for a New Zealand visitor visa.

The bona fide should serve to clear any doubts the immigration may have on your true intentions:

You can therefore also explain why you don’t intend to permanently immigrate to New Zealand. For example, proof of a steady business in your home country. Or several properties that you own and manage in your own country.

Another important reason for a bonafide is to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in New Zealand (without having to work there), and be able to fly out of the country on the designated date.

Why Do You Need A Bona fide?

New Zealand immigration requires a black and white softcopy of such a document.

You can upload it online together with the other documents listed above. After making a RealMe account (an easy and straightforward process in itself).

Use the bona fide letter to tie all your evidence together (not literally, of course!).

When I wrote my own bona fide, I wasn’t sure whether it would even be approved or not. There were no templates to follow and the instructions on the official New Zealand immigration site were very general.

I’m just sharing what worked for me back in 2018 when I successfully applied and obtained an extended visitor visa (with just one application) to stay longer in New Zealand with my then-boyfriend who had a NZ Working Holiday Visa.

Guidelines To Writing A Bona Fide For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

I based the following guidelines on what I could piece together from various sources online.

Firstly, state why you want the visitor visa. (e.g. for me, my main reason was to follow my then-boyfriend who successfully obtained a working holiday visa. I included his visa application number here at this point.) Mention what you plan to do while in New Zealand. It should be very clear that you are not going to set up a business or work part time while you are there.
Include a summary of your travel plans – just put it into one of your first paragraphs. If you have a detailed plan, you can attached it together with the cover letter.
Next, write something on your family background. The purpose is to show that your roots are still in your own country and it’s highly unlikely you would move to New Zealand.
Education background – short summary will do
Working background – write a short summary on your working history and add your current resume to the upload
Health background – if you have any major ailments, here is where you can mention those. I think you will have a higher chance of getting your visa approved if you’re relatively healthy. Otherwise, make sure your bank statements reflect that you can cover your own medical expenses.
Travel background – your intention to travel to New Zealand for a holiday appears more credible if you have already been to other countries for a holiday before. List them down together with the year and month of travel as well as the duration of each trip. State what the purpose of each trip was and if you had any problems obtaining a Visa for those. Drop old Visa numbers here if you still have them.

Tip: Please make sure to include how long you want to stay (an exact date would be best). Do not take for granted that they will grant you 9 months – they won’t . Ask for multiple entry as well.

Ending Your Bona Fide Cover Letter For A Visitor Visa

Besides all of the above, I added more details on our travel plans (by month) in New Zealand as well as our current New Zealand address and phone number. I even put our camper car’s license plate number and my boyfriend’s New Zealand working history.

If you need to leave New Zealand and re-enter again during your holiday duration in New Zealand, please request for it.

Explain why you would need a multiple-entry Visa . Put down the exact date you plan to leave New Zealand (i.e. the last day of your holiday) if you can too. They will not grant you 9 months by default.

At the very end of my bona fide cover letter, I shared my future travel plans after New Zealand to emphasize that I would not be migrating to New Zealand in the future.

My last point was to drop my email address and ask them to contact me if there were any questions (They didn’t have any questions though).

After writing your letter, covert it into a pdf and upload it together with the other documents.

As of May 2022, visa application processing for the Visitor Visa can take anywhere between 44 days to 5 months. Check here for the latest update .

Back in 2018, it was 21 days and if successful, you should get an email from the New Zealand immigration that contains your client number and your visitor visa. The expiry date will be clearly stated too.

Moreover, if you did request for multiple-entry and the request got through, it will be stated there too. Good luck in your application!

Making Changes After Your Visa Has Been Approved

Let’s say you need to change your visa conditions to multiple-entry. Or, you want to extend further.

Here are some things to consider:

You have to pay the fee of $165 NZD again (now $246 NZD) and submit online again but with the previous supporting documents with some exceptions (e.g. update bank statement and cover letter)
The X-ray certificate is valid for up to 3 years
Use the same passport photo you uploaded last time if you still look the same.

Before you go through all the effort of extending your current visitor visa, consider the possibility of flying out of New Zealand before the end of your visa and coming back with the visitor waiver visa.

For example, if your visitor visa happens to end on Jan 1, 2019. You could fly out of New Zealand and come back with the visitor visa (waiver country) then.

But what if you’ve already used the visitor visa (waiver) before?

According to the immigration officer I called, my visitor waiver visa record (I previously used 2 of 3 allowed months) reset when I obtained the longer visitor visa.

In fact, he said as long as I leave the country before Jan 1, 2019, I could come back in using my refreshed visitor waiver visa (i.e. another 3 months).

Don’t forget:

The same conditions still apply for the visitor waiver visa – e.g. return ticket out of New Zealand and proof of sufficient funds during your visit to New Zealand

Working Holiday Visa For New Zealand

Or you could try your luck with the Working Holiday visa (if you were never successfully granted one before and you are still less than 31 years old.

The immigration office will unfortunately not state the reason for your application getting rejected.

So to answer this question, think back on what you wrote in your bona fide. Did you give them reason to suspect your real intentions of going to New Zealand?

Reasons A Bona Fide Will Be Rejected By The NZ Immigration

Here are some possible reasons why your bona fide was rejected based on what is listed on the NZ immigration official website (and also my own thoughts on the matter):

Evidence and content in your bona fide (as well as previous applications) don’t match up
There is cause to believe that your actual reason for visiting New Zealand is false (e.g., different from you wrote on your visa application or arrival card) or unlawful
It appears doubtful that you will follow the conditions of your visa (e.g., previous visa rejection from another country, lack of sufficient funds, previous breach of visa conditions, etc)
You are missing some necessary documents to return to your home country (this is why having a return flight ticket might increase your chances of getting your application approved)
You’ve exceed the maximum length of stay possible for your circumstances and country of origin
Your country of origin is not in the visa waiver country list (this might affect your chances of success)
Your passport validity is not long enough (I.e., expiry date must be at least 3 months after the indented date of your visit)

When they say lawful purposes, they mean any of the following – you are going to New Zealand simply for a holidaying or sightseeing, to visit friends and relatives, training or studying in New Zealand for 3 months or less, for your wedding or a business consultation, or to participate in an amateur sports event.

Other reasons they may accept include getting medical treatment in New Zealand. Or if you have a personal invitation from the the NZ government.

Whatever, the reason, you are NOT ALLOWED to work in New Zealand during the duration of your stay if you are holding a Visitor Visa.

Note: Applicable to both Visa Waiver Visitor Visa and Visitor Visa

Furthermore, if you’re travelling with a partner, you have to prove your relationship (a screenshot of your chat history is not good enough) and they must have a clear record too (e.g. following their visa conditions, no previous visa rejections or criminal records, etc).

By now, you should at least know how to get started on your New Zealand bona fide – that pesky (but unfortunately crucial) letter that stands between you and a visitor visa.

Don’t forget to specify exactly when you want the visa to end (no more than 9 months in a 12 month period). Or else, the immigration office will do it for you and they will put the bare minimum (the date of your flight).

We really recommend you to call the NZ immigration office yourself before your trip as they have the latest information on visas. It takes a while to get through to the office so list down all your questions first!

Relationship support letters play a crucial role in the immigration process for New Zealand, especially for spouse visa applications. These letters come in two main types:

We recommend the relationship letter be written individually, i.e. one from the applicant and one from the partner providing sponsorship, but if it is too much work, writing and signing one letter jointly will suffice.

They aim to understand how the relationship initially started, evolved, and reached significant steps such as engagement, moving in together, or marriage. This perspective allows them to gauge the genuine commitment shared between the partners.

Here are some of the main points we advise our clients to include in writing this letter in support. Depending on your preferred approach, you may choose to present these points as separate sections within your letter or integrate them as sub-topics within the timeline of your relationship, whichever method aligns more logically and flows naturally with your unique situation.

1. Relationship History

The history should cover when you first met up to the present time, as well as future plans. Explain your relationship in chronological order so that the department of immigration can observe the progression. Please always make sure to include relevant details such as specific dates, locations, and the names of those involved to provide a comprehensive account of your relationship.

Be sure to include important stepping stones and events such as your first date, any noteworthy celebrations like birthdays or anniversaries, making the decision to get married, and instances of travelling together or embarking on adventures. Mention the date of moving in and the address, as this is one of the most crucial milestones in a partnership visa application.

2. Perception of the Relationship

One of the primary objectives of your letter in support is to convince the immigration officer regarding the enduring, committed, and exclusive nature of your relationship. Put emphasis that your relationship is authentic, that you have weathered challenges and are looking forward to spending the rest of your lives together.

Beyond presenting a factual account of your relationship, take the opportunity to bring out your personal perspectives. Discuss how you both perceive your relationship, your feelings towards it, to each other and the direction in which you see it heading. Express your genuine emotions and the depth of your commitment. You can talk about experiences that have deeply touched you as a couple and solidified the bond.

3. Challenges and Obstacles

It's important to acknowledge that no relationship is without its challenges, including occasional disagreements or setbacks. Some immigration officers may question the authenticity of your relationship, which appears to have no issues.

If you wanted to address this, you could briefly mention that, like any couple, you have faced challenges and disagreements from time to time. However, emphasise how you have worked through these issues maturely and with a shared commitment to strengthening your partnership.

If the relationship was affected by factors outside of your control, for example, maintaining a long-distance relationship, travel restrictions and separation due to COVID-19, mention how your unwavering commitment to each other made it possible to overcome and keep your relationship thriving, even when circumstances made it difficult.

4. Public Recognition

Within your letter, it's essential to underline the recognition and support your relationship receives from friends and family members. Explain how they are not only aware of your partnership but also endorse and encourage it. This can be a solid testament to the legitimacy of your relationship and the valuable network of support you have built around it.

In some cultures, societal norms or legal constraints may make it challenging for individuals in same-sex or LGBTQ relationships to disclose their partnerships openly. It's important to clarify within your letter that, due to cultural factors, you may not have openly shared your relationship status with a broader audience.

Likewise, premarital "living together" arrangements are forbidden due to cultural values, and you may have chosen not to disclose it to your family and friends. You will need to provide the relevant context while highlighting to the immigration officer that your relationship is genuine and committed regardless (with suitable supporting evidence).

It's important to understand that open marriages, open relationships, or polygamous relationships will not be approved. Immigration authorities look at exclusivity as one of the key factors when assessing whether a couple's relationship is genuine. Even if you genuinely believe that the relationship works for the parties involved, Immigration New Zealand will not consider it to be a committed relationship.

5. Other Matters

Consider your individual circumstances when deciding which points to include in your letter. There's no need to disclose everything; the point is to write a compelling letter of support for the purpose of a spousal sponsorship application. Instead, focus on highlighting your strengths rather than dwelling on weaknesses.

Describe the division of responsibilities and daily tasks within your household, including who takes charge of cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning, lawn maintenance, and handling rubbish disposal.
Explain whether your income is pooled into a joint bank account from which expenses are drawn, or if you maintain separate individual accounts and contribute equally, or in another arrangement. And point out whether you have any joint assets or liabilities. This will illustrate your commitment to shared financial responsibilities and highlight your financial interdependency.
If either or both of you have children from previous relationships, discuss how you manage this aspect of your life. Detail your roles and responsibilities in caring for and raising these children, and emphasise how your blended family functions harmoniously.
Remember to include accurate and up-to-date contact information, including full name, mobile number and email address. This ensures that immigration authorities can easily reach you if they need to schedule an interview or seek further clarification during the application process.

Getting Support Letters from Friends or Family Members

Obtaining letters from friends or family can be a pivotal aspect when applying for a visa to New Zealand. These letters serve as endorsements of your relationship and can significantly contribute to a positive outcome for your application. These individuals should not only understand your relationship with your partner but also have known the couple for a considerable duration to give their story more weight.

The letters aim to provide immigration officials with an external perspective on your relationship. Your friends or family members, who are aware of the relationship and how long they have known you and your partner, can attest to the authenticity of your bond. Their letters allow Immigration NZ to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of your relationship, improving the credibility of your application.

When asking your friends or family to write a letter of support, encourage them to include their contact information and their relationship with your partner (e.g. went to school together, work colleague, etc). Highlight that the letter should emphasise positive aspects of your relationship, such as when you decided to get married, how long they have known you as a couple, or when they've been to the place where you are currently living together.

The letters will act as an additional layer of relationship documents, which will strengthen your case and increase the chances of a successful immigration application to INZ.

How long does accreditation last for.

12 months initially and then renewable for each 24 months thereafter.

How long does a job check take from immigration New Zealand?

This can be as long as 6 to 8 weeks but again important to obtain advice to ensure you understand the criteria particularly in regard labour market testing.

How much does a job check cost?

Professional fees will depend upon complexity. The government application fee is $610.

What level of accreditation should my business apply for?

That will depend upon the number of work visa applications you wish to support and the number of overall work visa holders you will have on staff. We recommend employers seek professional advice on this point as it does come with additional costs from the government.

What is the criteria for becoming an accredited employer?

Generally employers will have to demonstrate they are financially sustainable, compliant with immigration and employment laws and also commit to specific obligations imposed on accredited employers. It is important that employers be familiar with those obligations and have systems in place to ensure compliance.

How I Got My New Zealand Visitor Visa!

Hi there folks! Once again I’m gonna share with you another visa application story I’ve just experienced earlier this year. This time it’s about getting a New Zealand visitor visa. Last year, I was planning to travel to New Zealand and explore key cities such as Auckland and Queenstown. Also, not to mention the place where The Lord of the Rings was filmed in! And that is none other than the Middle Earth’s Hobbiton! But there’s a caveat, as a Philippine passport holder, we are required to obtain a visitor visa to enter New Zealand. In short, we are not part of visa waiver countries and territories. With this in mind, let’s hope and pray that someday, New Zealand will open its door to us visa-free!

This post is all about getting an NZ visitor visa. On the other hand, for other visa options, please visit Immigration New Zealand’s website here .

So without further ado, please see the guide below to apply for an NZ visitor visa. With a Visitor visa, you can stay for a maximum of 9 months.

Steps to Apply for Visitor Visa

First of all, VFS Global is the partner of the New Zealand embassy that receives visa applications.

There are three types of visa application: 1.) Walk-in or via representative (provided the representative has authorisation letter) 2.) Send via courier 3.) Online application

Because I am a busy person, I chose the online application because it saves time. Please see step by step guide to accomplish online application form:

The next pages will basically ask information about your identity, and contact details, visit details, health details, work history, other contacts, etc. Take note guys that you MUST answer the questions TRUTHFULLY. Because they will definitely do a background check and if they’d find out that you lied to immigration that will affect your future visa applications. Therefore, please read carefully and answer truthfully.

10.) At the end of the application, you will be required to upload your documents mostly in PDF format, not more than 10MB. This is very important. However, f you upload more than the recommended size, the system will throw an exception error message.

Requirements/Documents

So I will list here the required documents you would be needing to submit online.

Passport-sized Photo – Please refer to the acceptable photos here: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/apply-for-a-visa/tools-and-information/acceptable-photos . The photo should be in .jpg format.
Passport Bio Data Page – this can be found on page 2 of your Philippine passport.
If you have a sponsor , kindly get a signed letter from the sponsor (employer, family, friend or relative) that indicates they will be sponsoring your trip.
If your sponsor is a family member, friend or relative, you must submit a proof of relationship with the sponsor. Proofs can be photos together, birth certificates, etc.
Confirmed Return Travel Tickets – this is a bit tricky since you would not know if you would be approved or not. I heard that there were applicants who provided reserved tickets and their applications were fortunately approved. In my case, my brother and I booked our return tickets via PAL and submitted the screenshot praying that we would be approved. Thanks to God that in just 4 days we received an email from them that our applications were approved 🙂 So it’s up to you if you would just provide reserved tickets. Anyway, the embassy will call you if they need the confirmed tickets from you.
Certificate of Employment – if employed, you must provide a letter of absence from your employer.
Other Evidences that You’re a Bonafide Applicant – this can be proof of assets such as cars, real estate properties, business titles, ITR, additional financial statements, past stamps or travel visas, or a cover letter. According to the Immigration New Zealand website, you need to provide at least NZ$1000 a month to support your trip, so it’s better to have NZ$1000 or more in your bank account. What we also did is to create a cover letter detailing that our purpose to travel to New Zealand is purely for a personal vacation to celebrate my birthday.

Finally, after accomplishing the forms and submitting completely all required documents, you may now go to VFS to submit your passport. Or you can wait for their email saying that you can now submit your passport. For this reason, you can do either way.

Submission of requirements

To submit your passport you have three (3) options:

Submit in person – VFS is open from Mondays-Fridays, except for holidays. Operating hours are from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Manila) and 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Cebu). You will need to pay VFS a handling fee of Php 570 . Please don’t forget to keep your payment receipt as it will be needed to retrieve your passport later on.

Submit via a Representative – provided that the representative has your signed authorisation letter and a copy of your valid ID and the representative.
Submit via Courier – You can submit your passport via courier or via the NZVAC or New Zealand Visa Application Centre’s courier service. NZVAC can pick it up from your home for a Php 380 fee.

And there you go! Normally, the processing time takes 20 business days. Of course, this depends if you submitted completely all the documents required. Typically if you have first world visas it will be easier for you to get approved. Hence, I received the approval within 4 working days because I already have a US visa. In other words, these powerful visas, like the US, are your gateway to other first world countries.

To give you an idea of the timeline, kindly refer below:

February 26: Submitted my online application
February 28: Got an email to submit our passports to VFS.
March 1: Submitted passports to VFS.
March 7: Received an email that our applications were approved 🙂

Additional Notes

Not to mention, when I tried to call on VFS, they told me that our passports were ready for pick up last March 4. While other applicants receive their visas on an average of 3-5 working days, I got mine for almost 2 working days! I strongly believe that this was due to my US visa and other travel records and stamps on my passport. As a result, I became a happy camper 🙂

Before I forget to say, you can retrieve your passport from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Mondays to Fridays (Manila) and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Cebu). Always be early when claiming your passports as a practice. Being an early bird is such a nice trait indeed!

Hi there! Apologies as I have just read your comment. As a rule of thumb, it is much better to show them your return ticket so the IO would not suspect that you would to overstay in their country.
