Raththam Review: Vijay Antony’s Thriller Is Succinct And Important, But Struggles To Create Emotional Stakes

In a tense sequence at a rundown bar in Raththam , a madha veriyan or a caste fanatic is persuaded by a man to attack a young mother who is pregnant with the child of a man from another caste. Their drunken stupor becomes heated, and just when we ready ourselves for bloodshed, the tension is undercut with a sort of subtle situational humour that you never saw coming. It goes without saying that CS Amudhan ’s Raththam is his most serious film till date. The director, who cracked us up with satirical critical darlings ( Tamizh Padam films) , weaves an investigative thriller set against two real time issues that hits close to home: press freedom and hate crime. But for a theme as explosive as this, Raththam ’s screenplay doesn't depict the spark — the spark that we’re used to seeing from Amudhan — that even the tiny bar sequence in the film manages to evoke.

Exploring The Root Of A Crime

Vijay Antony is Ranjith Kumar, a venerated investigative journalist who has hung up his boots after a tragedy. He is now a horse tender who lives his life with alcohol, guilt and a young daughter in Kolkata. But when he spots a pattern among a series of murders in Tamil Nadu that no one notices, he’s pulled into Chennai, same as he is into a profession that took everything from him. What he’s on to isn’t simply a throwaway murder though. Only the person committing the murder is considered a criminal. But what about the person instigating him to do so? Isn’t he a murderer too? Through Vijay Antony, Amudhan alerts its viewers of the different faces of hate. So, when a journalist is murdered for calling out a star’s behaviour on paper, a fan from an economically backward position is provoked to become the scapegoat. Or when an MLA is killed, the murderer isn’t just a person, but religious fanaticism. When else has a mainstream commercial Tamil film spoken about something as relevant as this in detail? For that Raththam needs to be credited.

Intellectually Strong, Emotionally Frail

But the freshness that the film leverages on as an effective PSA, doesn’t get translated into emotional stakes. There’s nothing wrong with a straight face thriller, sure. In fact, we’re grateful when we don’t get into a brutal flashback for a killer, who instead simply smirks and reminds us of their power. An elaborate chase sequence involving damning evidence is exciting because we’re not sure what this killer is actually capable of. But Raththam doesn’t show the same restraint with some of its lead characters. It spends quite a bit of time with Kumar’s past, only for us to stay unmoved by anything that’s happening in his life. We would’ve rather seen his flair in the newsroom. Kumar is a highly-functioning intellectual who also doesn’t do the one thing that most such men end up doing on screen — mansplain. So, even when he’s explaining concepts like why the incriminating evidence is important for an article or how psychological profiling is used by on-hire murderers to Madhumitha, the newsroom’s head crime reporter, he does it with a sort of gentleness and respect that comes very naturally to Vijay Antony.

The newsroom plays silent spectator even as the grand mess unfolds around it, and Amudhan depicts this with realism. So, even if he adds in a joke about an editor yelling at a reporter waiting outside a press conference with no real story, he also throws in an observation of how beyond the greater good, a great journalist continues to do his job because he has a slight narcissistic side. But these scenes remain outliers in a film like Raththam , which has ambitious and responsible things to talk about, but isn’t too concerned with how it delivers the message.

ரத்தம் விமர்சனம்: க்ரைம் கதைக்கான அழுத்தமின்றி தவிக்கும் திரைக்கதை; படம் சொல்ல வருவது என்ன?

விஜய் ஆண்டனி தனது முந்தைய போலீஸ் படமான 'கொலை' படத்தின் தாக்கத்திலிருந்தே மீளாமல் தவிக்கிறார். 'இவர் பத்திரிகையாளரா இல்லை போலீஸா?' எனக் குழப்பும் வகையில் அவரின் மேனரிஸமும் புலனாய்வு செய்யும் காட்சிகளும் உள்ளன.

பிரபல புலனாய்வுப் பத்திரிகையாளரான ரஞ்சித் குமார் (விஜய் ஆண்டனி), தாய் இல்லாத தன் மகளுடன் கொல்கத்தாவில் வசித்துவருகிறார். தன் பத்திரிகை வேலையால் மனைவியை இழந்த சோகத்தில் குடிப்பழக்கத்திற்குத் தன்னை அடிமையாக்கிக்கொண்டு, பத்திரிகைத் துறையிலிருந்து முற்றாக விலகியிருக்கிறார். மறுபுறம், சென்னையிலுள்ள 'வானம்' என்கிற பிரபல புலனாய்வு இதழின் பத்திரிகையாளரும் ரஞ்சித் குமாரின் உற்ற நண்பருமான செழியன் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். அதைத் தொடர்ந்து செழியனின் தந்தையும் வானம் இதழின் நிறுவனருமான ரத்தின பாண்டியனின் (நிழல்கள் ரவி) கோரிக்கையை ஏற்று, தான் ஆசிரியராகப் பணிபுரிந்த 'வானம்' இதழில் மீண்டும் இணைகிறார் ரஞ்சித் குமார்.

செழியன் கொலையின் பின்னணியைப் புலனாய்வு செய்யத் தொடங்குகிறார். கிணறு வெட்டப் பூதம் கிளம்பிய கதையாக, செழியனின் கொலைக்கும் அதைத் தொடர்ந்து நடக்கும் வேறு பிற கொலைகளுக்கும் தொடர்பிருப்பதையும் இதை கைதேர்ந்த கும்பல் ஒன்றுதான் செய்கிறது என்பதையும் கண்டுபிடிக்கிறார். மீண்டும் ஒரு 'புலனாய்வுப் பத்திரிகையாளராக' களமிறங்கும் ரஞ்சித் குமார், அக்கும்பலைக் கண்டுபிடித்து மக்கள் மன்றத்தில் நிறுத்தினாரா இல்லை 'புலனாய்வு செய்கிறேன்' என்ற பெயரில் நம்மைச் சோதித்தாரா என்பதைப் பேசுகிறது சி.எஸ்.அமுதனின் 'ரத்தம்'.

விஜய் ஆண்டனி எந்த மெனக்கெடலையும் செய்யாமல் தனது 'வழக்கமான' உணர்ச்சியற்ற நடிப்பையே வழங்கியிருக்கிறார். குடிப்பழக்கத்திற்கு அடிமையாகி சோகம் வழியும் முகத்துடன் இருக்கும் காட்சிகளில் தனது தாடியின் உதவியால் 'ஜஸ்ட் பாஸ்' ஆகிறார். 'வித்தியாசமான' கதாபாத்திரத்தில் வரும் மகிமா நம்பியார், கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வேலையைக் குறையின்றி செய்திருக்கிறார். இன்னும் கூடுதலாக இவரைப் பயன்படுத்தியிருக்கலாம். நிழல்கள் ரவி தனது அனுபவ நடிப்பால் தனது கதாபாத்திரத்தை 'கூலாக' செய்து முடிக்கிறார். நந்திதா தனது 'ஸ்ட்ரிட்டான' கதாபாத்திரத்தால் பார்வையாளர்களைக் கவர முயன்று, அதில் பாதி தேர்கிறார். 'ஸ்டாண்ட் அப் காமெடியன் ஜெகன்' நம்மைச் சிரிக்க வைக்கப் படம் முழுவதும் போராடி, தோல்வியடைகிறார். ரம்யா நம்பிசன், ஓ.ஏ.கே.சுந்தர், மீஷா கோஷல், ஜான் மகேந்திரன் ஆகியோர் அழுத்தம் இல்லாத கதாபாத்திரத்தில் வந்து போகிறார்கள்.

கோபி அமர்நாத்தின் ஒளிப்பதிவும், டி.எஸ்.சுரேஷின் படத்தொகுப்பும் எந்தப் பலத்தையும் சேர்க்கவில்லை. மாறாக, வழக்கொழிந்து போன கேமரா ஆங்கிள் மற்றும் 'கட்'களால் நம்மைச் சோதிக்கிறார்கள். கண்ணன் நாராயணனின் பின்னணி இசையானது பொங்கலுக்கு வடகறியாக, எல்லா காட்சிகளுக்கும் சம்பந்தமே இல்லாத கருவிகளால் இசைத்து நம்மை இம்சிக்கிறது. கதாபாத்திரங்களின் உணர்வையோ த்ரில்லருக்கான பதற்றத்தையோ பார்வையாளர்களுக்குக் கடத்தாமல், அவர்களைக் கடுப்பேற்றியதைப் பார்க்கும்போது 'பின்னணி இசையில் ஸ்பூஃப்' செய்ய முயன்றிருக்கிறாரோ என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. 'ரத்தம் ரத்தம்' பாடல் மட்டும் ஓகே ரகத்தில் பாஸ் ஆகுகிறது. ஒரு இன்வெஸ்டிகேஷன் த்ரில்லர் படத்திற்கான சுவாரஸ்யத்தையும் பதற்றத்தையும் கொண்டு வர முடியாமல் தத்தளிக்கிறது அதீஷா, கார்க்கி பவா, தோழர் ஆதி மற்றும் இயக்குநர் சி.எஸ்.அமுதன் ஆகியோர் அடங்கிய எழுத்துக் கூட்டணி.

தனது அதிரடி சாகசங்களால் மனைவியை இழந்த சோகத்தாலும், தன் மகள் மீதான பாசத்தாலும், எல்லாவற்றிலுமிருந்து விலகித் தனித்து வாழும் ஒரு நேர்மையான போலீஸ், ஒரு சம்பவத்திற்குப் பிறகு மீண்டும் சார்ஜ் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு களமிறங்கி எதிரிகளை வேட்டையாடும் தொன்மையான ஒரு போலீஸ் கதையில், போலீஸிற்குப் பதிலாக `புலனாய்வுப் பத்திரிகையாளர்' என்பதாக மாற்றி அமைத்துக் களமிறங்கியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் சி.எஸ்.அமுதன்.

யூகிக்கக் கூடிய திருப்பங்கள், ஆமை வேகத்தில் நகரும் காட்சிகள், செயற்கையான நடிப்பு, நேர்த்தியில்லாத திரையாக்கம் எனச் சுவாரஸ்யமற்றே நகர்கிறது திரைக்கதை. தொடர்ந்து நடக்கும் கொலைகள், அதற்குப் பின்னணியைப் புலனாய்வது, அதை விளக்குவது போன்றவற்றை விறுவிறு திரைக்கதையில் விளக்காமல், கூட்டம் கூட்டமாக உட்கார்ந்து பேச்சுப் போட்டி நடத்துவது போலப் பேசிக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்கள். இரண்டாம் பாதியில் தலையெடுக்கும் மகிமா நம்பியாரை நம்பினால், அவரும் 'பந்தயத்துக்கு நாங்க வரலாமா?' எனப் பேச்சுப் போட்டியில் ஃபஸ்ட் ப்ரைஸ் வாங்கும் ஆர்வத்தில் பேசிக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்.

'வானம்' இதழ் அலுவலகத்தில் உள்ள பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் எந்நேரமும் பரபரப்பாக 'தாட் பூட்' என ஆங்கிலமும் தமிழும் கலந்து பேசி குறுக்கமறுக்க போய்க்கொண்டே இருக்கிறார்கள். முக்கிய நிகழ்வுகளை வானம் 'இதழின்' சார்பாக கவர் செய்ய 'சேட்டிலைட் கேமரா' வாகனங்களுடன் செல்கிறார்கள். எதுக்குங்க?! ஆசிரியரே இல்லாமல் ஏழு ஆண்டுகளாக ஓர் இதழை நடத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். வானம் இதழின் முன்னாள் ஆசிரியரும் உலகப் புகழ்பெற்ற இன்வெஸ்டிகேடிவ் ஜார்னலிஸ்ட்டுமான விஜய் ஆண்டனியை, அதே இதழின் 'க்ரைம் நியூஸ்' ஹெட்டிற்கே தெரியாது என்பதாக வருகிறது ஒரு காட்சி. இது என்ன மாதிரியான புலனாய்வு இதழ் அலுவலகம் என்பதையே ஒருவர் புலனாய்வு செய்து நமக்குப் புரிய வைக்க வேண்டும் போல! காவல்துறை தொடர்பான காட்சிகளிலும் நம்பத்தன்மை இல்லை.

The Road Review: `போதும்ப்பா சாமி எங்கள இறக்கி விட்ருங்க!'- த்ரிஷாவின் க்ரைம் த்ரில்லர் படம் எப்படி?

'இவர் பத்திரிகையாளரா இல்லை போலீஸா?' எனக் குழப்பும் வகையில் அவரின் மேனரிஸமும் புலனாய்வு செய்யும் காட்சிகளும் உள்ளன. இறுதியில் ஆக்‌ஷன் அவதாரம் எடுத்து, குதிரையில் ஏறிப் பறந்து 'பரியேறும் புலனாய்வாளராக' அவதாரமெடுத்து நம்மைப் பதற (!) வைக்கிறார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் இதுவும் க்ரைம் ஜானரில் எடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஸ்பூஃப் படம் போல என்றெல்லாம் தோன்றுகிறது.

சாதி, மதம், சினிமா போன்றவற்றின் மீதான இளைஞர்களின் வெறியை சில கொலைகார கும்பல் எப்படித் தங்களது குற்றச்செயலுக்குப் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்கிறது, கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக 'வெறுப்புப் பிரசார'த்தின் மூலமாகக் குற்றங்கள் எப்படி அதிகரித்து வருகின்றன என்பது ஒரு க்ரைம் படத்துக்குச் சுவாரஸ்யமான கருதான். ஆனால், இதே பகுப்பாய்வைச் சித்தாந்த மோதலால் நடந்த தீவிரவாதச் செயல்களுக்கும் பொருத்திப் பார்த்துவிடும் ஆபத்து இருக்கவே செய்கிறது.

சுவாரஸ்யமான திரைக்கதையும், ரசிக்கும்படியான திரையாக்கமும் அமையாமல் போனதால், `ரத்தம்' வேண்டிய அழுத்தமின்றி தவிக்கிறது.

Ratham review: Vijay Antony-CS Amudhan film is an ode to the spirit of good journalism

Ratham (tamil) ( 3 / 5).

At a time when journalism in India faces one of its direst battles, director CS Amudhan offers a story that is not only a statement of solidarity but one that also calls out news outlets that side with power over truth. Vijay Antony plays Ranjith Kumar, a once-famous investigative reporter who walks away from the profession after a series of tragedies. The film opens with his struggles as an alcoholic single parent of a young girl, but soon, he’s drawn back into the world he left behind after a series of strangely connected murders take place.  

As Kumar attempts to unravel the mystery, he joins forces with his former boss Rathnapandian (Nizhalgal Ravi), and a crime reporter Madhumita (Nandita Swetha). For a certain generation of Kollywood audiences, seeing Nizhalgal Ravi on screen is certainly nostalgic, but that alone is hardly enough. For an actor who rose to fame playing the villain, his role in Ratham feels tame. It’s not that he should have been cast as an antagonist, it’s just that his character fails to bring out emotional reactions in us. 

This unfortunately extends to the other actors too, including the film’s star Vijay Antony. There are moments when it’s hard to discern between an attempt to portray a man jaded and numbed by his past and someone needing to put a little more heart into his character. Still, Vijay Antony plays a type of hero not common in Tamil cinema – Kumar is obviously a celebrity journalist and the film ensures you don’t forget it, yet he has none of the sneering, dismissive swagger of usual Kollywood heroes playing geniuses at their trade.

We see him as respectful of Madhu’s own work, apologizes when he pushes a limit, and shuts up a male colleague who attempts to vilify her ambition. What somewhat takes away from this appreciable change in how Kollywood heroes interact with ambitious women on screen, is Nandita’s stilted acting. Also, her characterisation is largely limited to being brusque with her team and regularly shouting at them, while offering truly helpful insights once in a rare while. 

Mahima Nambiar and Remya Nambeessan, of whom it’s difficult to say much without giving away the plot, seem similarly hampered. Especially with Mahima, it takes far too long to get used to her rather wooden performance, to take her as seriously as the story demands. There’s a vast difference between bringing a restrained menace to the screen and robotically delivering lines.

Politically, the film scores well on several points. The hero’s alcoholism is handled with a degree of grace and compassion without over-the-top drama (unlike Master for example). Ratham also doesn’t descend to the misogyny typical of Kollywood when women play villainous characters. As a matter of fact, one of the antagonists—a single mother with a dyslexic child – is shown taking an admirable stance about mental health while castigating the child’s school for discriminatory behaviour. The gesture feels even more substantial, though it should be the most fundamental approach, in a film industry that routinely mischaracterises people with mental health conditions. 

But the film’s biggest win is in taking on hate crimes in India. It drops data and hints about the rising rate of such crimes in recent years, particularly along communal and caste lines. Ratham goes further and without shying away, rightly categorises the Pattali Makkal Katchi’s (PMK) spectre of “naadaga kaadhal” (fake romance) as hate speech, though the political party itself is of course not referred. This term has been branded to vilify Dalit men in inter-caste relationships in a vein similar to the bogus claims of ‘love jihad’ by the Hindu Right. 

However, somewhere along the way, Ratham’s dedication to its progressive politics becomes its own undoing since one feels like they’re being lectured repeatedly by a well-meaning professor who over-explains everything. This is true also of how we’re notified about who the villains are. The sound of wolves howling every single time one of the antagonists comes on screen, feels rather childish and very rapidly becomes grating.  

As a procedural drama set in a newsroom, there are some breezy lapses in logic, yet it’s hard to hold a grudge when the director seems so sincere in his statement about our freedoms and responsibilities as reporters. 

Even if you have some misgivings, by the film’s end, singer-songwriter Arivu’s appearance during the credits shifts everything. The raw energy of Arivu’s “Oru Naal” as he roars and dances on screen left me rooted to the spot. It appears as if the young rapper can never misfire, and he leaves us with yet another stunning track that tears into those who use identities as murder weapons. 

While the credits fade, and Vijay Antony and Arivu walk away with their arms around each other’s shoulders, you wonder if the real heart of the film lies in that moment.

ஒரு இன்வெஸ்டிகேட்டிவ் ஜர்னலிஸ்ட், தமிழில் புலனாய்வு பத்திரிகையாளர், ஆக சர்வதேச அளவில் புகழ் பெற்றவர் விஜய் ஆண்டனி. பிரசவ சமயத்தில் அவரது மனைவி இறந்துவிட தனது வேலையும் ஒரு காரணம் என வேலையை விட்டு தன் மகளுடன் கோல்கட்டாவில் வசிக்கிறார். தனது கவலைகளை மறக்க குடிக்கு அடிமையாகிறார். இந்நிலையில் சென்னையில் பத்திரிகை நடத்தும் நிழல்கள் ரவியின் மகன் அலுவலகத்திலேயே கொடூரமாகக் கொலை செய்யப்படுகிறார். விஜய் ஆண்டனியை தன் இன்னொரு மகன் போல வளர்த்த நிழல்கள் ரவி, விஜய் ஆண்டனியை சந்தித்து அக்கொலை பற்றிச் சொல்கிறார். விஜய் ஆண்டனியும் சென்னை வந்து நிழல்கள் ரவி பத்திரிகையில் வேலைக்குச் சேர்கிறார். கொலைக்கான காரணத்தைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க முயலும் விஜய் ஆண்டனிக்கு கூடுதலாக பல தகவல்கள் கிடைக்கின்றன. அவை என்ன, குற்றவாளி யார் ? என்பதைக் கண்டுபிடித்தாரா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. மீண்டும் ஒரு மென் சோகக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் விஜய் ஆண்டனி. தனக்காகவே இப்படிப்பட்ட கதாபாத்திரங்களைத் தேடித் தேர்வு செய்து நடிக்கிறார் என்றே தெரிகிறது. மனைவி இல்லாமல் மகளை வளர்க்கும் சோகம் ஒரு பக்கம், சகோதரனைப் போன்றவரை இழந்தது இன்னொரு பக்கம் என சோகமயமாகக் காட்சியளிக்கிறார். பொதுவாக பத்திரிகையாளராக நடிப்பவர்கள் கொஞ்சம் ஓவராகவே நடிப்பார்கள். இந்தப் படத்தில் விஜய் ஆண்டனி அப்படியான நாடகத்தன்மையைக் கொண்டு வராமல் இயல்பாக நடித்திருக்கிறார். க்ரைம் எடிட்டர் ஆக நந்திதா ஸ்வேதா. பத்திரிகை அலுவலகத்தில் மட்டுமே அவரது கதாபாத்திரம் முழுமையாக நகர்கிறது. அக்கதாபாத்திரத்திற்குரிய மேன்மை, அழுத்தம் ஆகியவற்றைச் சரியாகக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். மகிமா நம்பியார் கதாபாத்திரம் ஆரம்பத்தில் ஒரு சாதாரண அம்மா கதாபாத்திரம் என நாம் நினைக்க அவர் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் ஒரு பெரும் சஸ்பென்சை சேர்த்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். ரம்யா நம்பீசனுக்கு அவ்வளவாக வேலையில்லை, சில காட்சிகளில் மட்டும் வந்து போகிறார். படத்திற்குத் தேவையான அளவோடு கண்ணன் நாராயணன் பின்னணி இசையும், கோபி அமர்நாத் ஒளிப்பதிவும் அமைந்துள்ளது. படத்தில் போலீஸ் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் இருந்தாலும் அவர்கள் செய்யும் வேலையை படத்தின் நாயகன் விஜய் ஆண்டனியே செய்து முடிக்கிறார். ஒரு புதுவிதக் கதையை யோசித்தது சிறப்பு. இடைவேளைக்குப் பின் யார் குற்றவாளி என்பதை ஒரு 'திடுக்' சம்பவத்துடன் காட்டியிருந்தால் இன்னும் அதிர்வுகளை உண்டாக்கியிருக்கும். குழப்பமில்லாத ஒரு க்ரைம் திரில்லரைத் தந்தால் போதும் என்பதுதான் படக்குழுவின் விருப்பமாக இருந்திருக்கிறது. ரத்தம் - பி பாசிட்டிவ்

சென்னை: தமிழ்ப்படம் மற்றும் தமிழ்ப்படம் 2 படங்களை இயக்கி ரசிகர்களை சிரிக்க வைத்த சி.எஸ். அமுதன் சீரியஸாக ரசிகர்களை சிந்திக்க வைக்கும் நோக்கில் ஒரு த்ரில்லர் கதையை உருவாக்கி உள்ளார். இந்த படத்தில் விஜய் ஆண்டனி, மஹிமா நம்பியார், நந்திதா ஸ்வேதா மற்றும் ரம்யா நம்பீசன் என பலர் நடித்துள்ள இந்த திரைப்படம் இன்று வெளியானது.

ஸ்க்ரிப்ட் வைஸ் சி.எஸ். அமுதன் பிரமாதமான கதை மற்றும் திரைக்கதையை உருவாக்கி இருந்தாலும், காட்சி ரீதியாக திரையில் அது அப்படியே பிரதிபலித்ததா? இல்லையா? என்கிற கேள்விக்கான விமர்சனத்தை இங்கே பார்க்கலாம் வாங்க..

ரத்தம் கதை: பத்திரிகை நிறுவனத்தில் புகுந்து எடிட்டரை ஒருவர் கொன்று விடுகிறார். தனது மகனின் மறைவை பார்த்து அதிர்ச்சியாகும் நிழல்கள் ரவி இந்த கிரைமை சரியாக விசாரிக்க ரஞ்சித்தை (விஜய் ஆண்டனி) அழைக்கிறார். ஏற்கனவே அந்த பத்திரிகையில் எடிட்டராக இருந்த ரஞ்சித் தனது நண்பனின் கொலைக்கு காரணமானவர்கள் யார்? ஏன் ஒரு பத்திரிகையை நடத்தும் எடிட்டரை கொன்றனர் என்பதை விசாரிக்கும் புலனாய்வு கதை தான் இந்த ரத்தம்.

படம் எப்படி இருக்கு?: பல ரிசர்ச்களை செய்து இயக்குநர் சி.எஸ். அமுதன் தமிழ் சினிமாவுக்கு புதுமையான கதையை கொடுக்க முயற்சித்து இருக்கிறார். ஏற்கனவே சில வெப்சீரிஸ்களில் ட்ரோல் மற்றும் நெகட்டிவிட்டியை பரப்ப ஒரு டீம் எப்படி செயல்படுகிறது என்பதை காட்டி உள்ளனர். நெகட்டிவ் விமர்சனங்கள் கொடுக்கும் விமர்சகர்களை ரசிகர்களை தூண்டி விட்டு கொலை செய்யும் அளவுக்கு கிரைம் உண்மையிலேயே நடக்கிறதா? என்கிற கேள்வியும் எழத்தான் செய்கிறது. கதைப்படி அதுவும் ஓகே தான் என்றாலும் காட்சி அமைப்பில் சி.எஸ். அமுதன் கோட்டை விட்டது தான் இந்த படத்திற்கு வேகத்தடையாக மாறியுள்ளது.

பிளஸ்: சிஎஸ் அமுதனின் திரைக்கதை படத்திற்கு பலமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. விஜய் ஆண்டனி வழக்கமான தனது நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தி உள்ளார். மஹிமா நம்பியார், ரம்யா நம்பீசனின் நடிப்பு மிரட்டுகிறது. நந்திதா ஸ்வேதா கொடுத்த வேலையை செய்திருக்கிறார். வித்தியாசமான முயற்சியாகவும் இளைஞர்களை சோஷியல் மீடியா எப்படி தவறான வழிகளில் நடத்துகிறது போன்ற விஷயங்கள் படத்திற்கு பலமாக உள்ளது.

மைனஸ்: ஆனால், முதல் 20 நிமிட ஸ்லோவான திரைக்கதை மற்றும் பல இடங்களில் நம்ப முடியாத காட்சிகள், விஜய் ஆண்டனி பெரிதும் நடிப்பில் மெனக்கெடாமல் நடித்திருப்பது, பின்னணி இசை, அந்த ப்ளூ கலர் டோன் என பல விஷயங்கள் படத்திற்கு மைனஸ் ஆக உள்ளது. படத்தின் கிளைமேக்ஸ் காட்சியும் பலமாக கனெக்ட் ஆகவில்லை.

பார்க்கலாமா? வேண்டாமா?: வித்தியாசமான முயற்சி படங்களை பார்க்கும் ரசிகர்களுக்கு ரத்தம் ஒருமுறை பார்க்கக் கூடிய படமாக இருக்கும், ஆனால், அனைத்து ரசிகர்களையும் கவரும் படமாக இருக்குமா? என்பது சந்தேகம் தான்.

‘Raththam’ movie review: Insipid writing leaves this thriller with some novel ideas in cold blood

Cs amudhan’s thriller, starring vijay antony, suffers from a bland treatment despite having an intriguing plot.

Remember the ‘retired cop returning to action’ trope that Tamil cinema loves? From Vijayakanth’s Chatriyan to Vijay’s Theri and even Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal , they feature men in khaki who hang up their boots after a major mishap and become single parents doing odd jobs to make a living, only for something from their past to pull them back to what they do best. Now, imagine the same plot with a journalist instead of a cop and you’ve got the story of Raththam .

Credit where credit’s due, Vijay Antony seems to love picking up characters with varied choices of professions — whether as a beggar, an advocate, a doctor or even a CM candidate (in the criminally underrated Kodiyil Oruvan ) — and they open up a vista of possibilities. In Raththam , he plays Ranjith Kumar, an investigative journalist who returns to his job when his close friend Chezhiyan gets killed in a hate crime. He figures out that it’s one among many targeted crimes where the killers are also victims as they’re mere pawns in a huge murders-for-hire network.

Though this one-liner sounds intriguing, how Raththam chooses to flesh it out does no justice to it. We’re introduced to Ranjith as a single parent working as a horse keeper in Kolkata and when his mentor (Nizhalgal Ravi) informs him of his son Chezhiyan’s death, Ranjith returns to Chennai. He joins as an apprentice under Madhumitha (Nandita Swetha) in the media house, with the latter not realising that she’s bossing around a once-celebrated journalist. Considering that how Ranjith connects several dots and solves the murders forms the main plot of Raththam , one might expect the above scenes to unfold during the opening credits, or at least, in the opening stretch after it. But it’s not until the intermission that the mastermind behind the coordinated crimes is revealed, and by then, the film has hit a slump that even the relatively better second half can’t pull it up from.

Raththam pursues at an obnoxiously slow pace till the intermission and goes on hyperdrive the moment Ranjith takes over the crime story. What follows is a series of exposition that tries to be a crash course on everything from data mining to psychological profiling. We’re also introduced to more characters, one who was sexually abused as a kid and another with a dyslexic child. We also witness how this underground network chooses its candidates, who are mostly young men brainwashed enough to even kill others in the name of caste, religion and... favourite actor.

While it’s debatable whether fanaticism towards an actor can be equated to extremism that’s carried out in the name of religion or caste, director CS Amudhan sheds light on how social media has turned into a platform for youngsters with misplaced values to become weapons in the hands of those he calls ‘influencers’. There are parallels between the story’s protagonist and the antagonist — both being single parents doing what they do for the “kick” it gives — but the film leaves you wishing that it concentrated more on this cat-and-mouse game instead of spending valuable time on other aspects. The filmmaker, in his first thriller outing, after making some of Tamil cinema’s best comedy films, does a lovely job of showcasing life within a newsroom. But the film’s overall treatment feels bland and the incessantly used English lines feel inorganic.

Despite a few characters that could’ve very well been written off, the primary cast members pull off their roles quite well. Vijay Antony is convincing, though there isn’t any heavy lifting his character commands from him. Amudhan, known for his humour, laces the film with bouts of his trademark touches that Jagan carries well. Mahima Nambiar’s Sangeetha is a surprise, but despite an intriguing set-up, her character isn’t allowed to reach its potential. Though the end credit song featuring Arivu is quite a banger, the convenient and contrived ending doesn’t really help the film. After blowing his cover, Ranjith teaches his subordinates how finding patterns makes for a great story. But what deserves equal credit is great storytelling that is as important as a great story and that’s also what Raththam dearly misses.

But he is a little angry with me because I have come to cinema without learning music. I thought for a long time that I should work with Amudhan. After 10 years, it has become possible now. You know him as a comedy film director. Apart from that, another dimension of him has come out in this film. This film is sure to be a hit."

Director CS Amudhan, best known for his full-length spoof Tamizh Padam  (2010), delivers a gripping and intense investigative thriller this time around.

Rathtam (Blood) starts on a slow note but soon gains intensity as we are introduced to a plot that revolves around new patterns and trends in crime.

The film begins with the editor of a leading political magazine being brutally stabbed to death in his own office by an inebriated fan, who is miffed that the magazine published a piece against his favourite star.

The death is dismissed as just the act of a crazy fan who is taken into custody.

The owner of the publication, Rathnam Pandian (Nizhalgal Ravi) decides to replace the late editor — who incidentally happened to be his son — with Ranjith Kumar (Vijay Antony) whom he trained in the past.

After getting trained by Pandian, Kumar becomes a highly respected investigative journalist but becomes an alcoholic after the death of his wife.

Kumar, who migrated to Kolkata with his school-going daughter, initially hesitates to take up the offer. As fate would have it, his fragile health condition because of alcoholism worsens and certain developments make him have a change of heart.

He returns to Chennai and agrees to take up Rathnam Pandian’s offer on the condition that he will start off as just an ordinary reporter and not the editor.

Yet to get over his addiction to alcohol, Kumar does nothing much. But soon, he gets into the groove and spots a pattern in the deaths of some prominent people.

As he begins to investigate the deaths closed as straightforward cases, Kumar soon realises that not just those killed but the killers too are victims and that there is a much bigger hand working behind the scenes.

How he uncovers the truth behind the deaths is what  Raththam  is all about.

Raththam  works big time because it not only entertains us as a thriller but also provides us with an insight into how the information we inadvertently and voluntarily disclose about ourselves through social media is used by manipulators who are silently observing us.

The film gives an idea of all that can be done with the information we put out of ourselves.

To his credit, director CS Amudhan comes up with a brilliant concept for a plot.

However, the only disappointment is that the premise which offers so much scope for entertainment isn’t completely exploited.

For the most part,  Raththam  is almost perfect. But, towards the climax, one gets the feeling of the story being narrated in a tearing hurry.

In fact, there are some questions that remain unanswered even after the climax and this has a telling effect on your satisfaction level.

Perfect casting.

The film has some fantastic performances to offer.

Mahima Nambiar, who plays the mother of a dyslexic child, stuns you with a commanding performance.

She plays a significant role that has several shades and she delivers on all counts. Her role in  Raththam  gives Mahima the opportunity to showcase what a powerhouse of talent she is.

The actor gratefully seems to have accepted the opportunity and made full use of it.

Vijay Antony, in his measured manner, scores yet again. He by and large delivers an ideal performance that works big time. Except in a couple of instances where he is shown weeping, Vijay Antony is perfect.

Nandita Swetha, who has not been seen in Tamil cinema for quite some time now, makes a resounding comeback with her impactful role in  Raththam . Confident and determined, Nandita plays the role of an acting editor to perfection.

Kannan Narayanan’s music and Gopi Amarnath’s visuals aid Amudhan’s narration.

In short,  Raththam  might not be perfect on all counts but it certainly is a good investigative thriller.

Critics Review

An interesting core but the film remains passable at best.

Most of Raththam plays out like an information dump. The characters on screen keep listing out details akin to a news report. It makes sense in a way as most of the interactions are between journalists but there has to be at least some sort of a connect with the audience. (more)

A crime drama with good ideas and bland execution

In the end, we are left with just a handful of memorable moments - a verbal face-off between the protagonist and antagonist that unfolds in the most harmless fashion on the surface while packing in a lot of tension inside, and their battle of wits as they try to be one step ahead of each other. 'Rathnam' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Words

After 'Thaamirabharani', and 'Poojai', director Hari of 'Singam' fame has teamed up with Vishal Krishna for 'Rathnam'. The movie has Priya Bhavani Shankar in the female lead.

Samuthirakani, Ramachandra Raju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Yogi Babu, Mohan Raman, Vijayakumar, Tulasi and others in the supporting cast. The film has Devi Sri Prasad's music, TS Vijay's editing and M Sukumar's cinematography.

Like his earlier movies, Hari's latest movie too is an action packed commercial entertainer. The promos have indicated that it will be yet another fascinating story that revolves around a lawless thugs and an angry youngman.

Rathnam (played by Vishal) works for an MLA (portrayed by Samuthirakani) and their alliance is built on a unique set of morals. Their brand of rowdyism is aimed at serving the greater good of the people.

The MLA takes pride in the understanding between his henchmen and the police, believing it allows them to work together for the community's benefit. One fateful day, Rathnam encounters Mallika (played by Priya Bhavani Shankar), who is preparing to take her NEET exam. He soon learns that she is being targeted by a group of thugs.

Rathnam is known for his willingness to assist women in distress, but his decision to help Mallika is motivated by more than just his usual sense of duty. Mallika reveals that her family is embroiled in a conflict with the Rayudu brothers over a piece of land that rightfully belongs to them. As Rathnam delves deeper into the situation to uncover the truth, he finds himself entangled in a dangerous game. Who are the Rayudu brothers, and what lengths are they willing to go to in order to get their way?
