Education System in Pakistan

Pakistan Ka Taleemi Nizam Urdu Mein

What does the constitution of Pakistan say about education?

  • What are the flaws in the education system in Pakistan?
  • How do corruption and political instability affect education?
  • What is the ranking of Pakistan in terms of the out of school population?

Constitutionally, free and compulsory education is the fundamental right of all Pakistanis. It is the responsibility of the state to educate the children of the ages of 5 to 16 year. The article 25-A of the constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan reads:

“The State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such manner as may be determined by law.”

The present education system is replete with flaws and loopholes. For the fulfilment of its responsibility of educating the public, the government needs a strong and effective education system which can deliver the desired results.

The Education System in Pakistan:

Currently, a six-tier education system in running in Pakistan which consists of the following levels:

  • Pre-school – children aged 3 to 5 years
  • Primary Education – grades/classes 1 through 5
  • Middle/Elementary Education – grades/classes 6 through 8
  • High/Secondary Education – grades/classes 9 and 10 (leading to Secondary School Certificate or SSC)
  • Intermediate/Higher Secondary Education – grades/classes 11 and 12 (leading to Higher Secondary School Certificate or HSSC)
  • University Education – undergraduate, graduate, master and doctorate degrees.

Both the federal and the provincial governments are entitled to run and oversee the literacy programs in the country. The educations running under the central and provincial governments are scattered across the country.

Education System in Pakistan Issues and Problems:

Despite the introduction and implementation of around two dozen policies and plans, the education system in Pakistan is facing numerous issues and problems of grave nature. The literacy rate is still below 60% (2016) which puts a question mark on the effectiveness of the learning infrastructure in the country.

Some of the major education system in Pakistan issues and problems are listed below:

Low Budget Allocation:

Pakistan is one of the countries in the world with lowest budgetary allocation for education. She spends only 2% of its national GDP on education. Consequently, millions of children are out of school in the country, i.e. they are deprived of their fundamental (constitutional) right to free and compulsory education. So, the budgetary allocation for education should be increased from 2 to 7 percent.

Corruption:

While the budget for education is already insufficient, the corrupt elements in the management structure further aggravate the situation by filling their pockets through illegitimate means. So, corruption can be regarded as one of the major factors contributing to the failure of educational policies in Pakistan.

Political Instability:

The unstable political environment also affects the efficiency of education system in Pakistan. Political agitations pose hindrance to the implementation of government policies for improving the standard and quality of learning.

Terrorism and Insecurity:

In the recent past, the country has witnessed a wave of inhuman terrorist attacks on the educational institutions. For example, in the years from 2009 to 2013, as many as 642 attacks were launched by the enemies of education and of humanity. So, the parents feel reluctant to send their children to school. On the other hand, the school going children have to study in an insecure and fearful environment which affects the quality of education.

Untrained Teachers:

As less educated and untrained teachers are employed in the schools, they are unable to impart a good quality education to the students.

Lack of Check and Balance:

The lack of proper check and balance promotes negligent behavior on the part of the administrators, educationists and the educators. If the individuals shirking from their responsibilities are brought to book, the education system in Pakistan can significantly be improved.

Poor Infrastructure:

The poor infrastructure, poorly equipped classrooms and debilitating learning environment make major contribution to the inability and failure of education system in Pakistan to deliver the desired results.

Though the government has launched educational reforms to make the education totally free for the children from poor backgrounds, poverty is still a big hindrance on the way to education. The poor parents prefer making their children economic supporters of the family rather than sending them to schools.

Other education in Pakistan issues and problems include unequal standards of education in the public and private section institutions, lack of technical education, regional disparity, unequal educational opportunities for male and female students, and so on.

Facts about Education System in Pakistan:

  • Did you know Pakistan has been ranked as one of the top English speaking nations in the world?
  • Around 50% Pakistanis have command over the English language.
  • While literacy rate in the Federal Capital, Islamabad, is 87%, only around 9.5% of tribal area females are literate.
  • According to a survey conducted in 2016, the literacy rate in Pakistan is 58%.
  • The Pakistani universities produce about 445,000 graduates every year.
  • Did you known Pakistan has been listed among the countries with the lowest literacy rate?
  • The country has the second largest out of the school population (of children) after Nigeria.
  • Only 1 in 3 women in Pakistan can read and write.
  • According to the findings of Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey 2004-5, only 7 percent of girls in the rural areas of Baluchistan are literate.
  • The UN World Population Revision 2004 suggests Pakistan will become the 4th largest country by population by 2050.
  • As many as 642 terrorist attacks were launched on educational institutions in Pakistan from 2009 to 2013.
  • Spending just 2% of her national GDP on education, Pakistan is listed among the countries with the lowest educational budgets. (2004)

importance of urdu language

Table of Contents

Introduction:.

Urdu language, with its rich history and cultural significance, holds a special place in the hearts of millions worldwide. As a language that emerged from the fusion of Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and local dialects, Urdu carries the heritage of a diverse and multicultural past. It serves as a symbol of unity, bringing people together from different regions and backgrounds, and remains an essential component of our cultural heritage.

2. Brief history and significance of Urdu language:

Urdu traces its roots back to the 13th century when it evolved in the Indian subcontinent during the Delhi Sultanate. Its development was deeply influenced by the interaction between Persian-speaking rulers and local populations. Over time, Urdu flourished as the language of poetry, literature, and administration during the Mughal Empire.

2.1 Urdu as a symbol of cultural identity and heritage:

Urdu embodies the essence of South Asian culture, acting as a powerful unifier among people of diverse linguistic and ethnic backgrounds. It serves as a mother tongue to millions in Pakistan and is one of the 22 officially recognized languages in India. The language carries the legacy of our forefathers and connects us to our roots, reminding us of our shared heritage.

Consider the renowned Urdu poet Allama Iqbal, whose poetry remains a profound representation of South Asian cultural values, inspiring generations to embrace their identity and heritage. Here are three beautiful quotes and poetry by Allama Iqbal in Urdu: “خودی کو کر بلند اتنا کہ ہر تقدیر سے پہلے خدا بندے سے خود پوچھے، بتا تیری رضا کیا ہے؟” Translation: “Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle Khuda bande se khud pooche, bata teri raza kya hai?” Translation: “Yeh khauf hai ki tuu ghafil na rah jaye tark-e-raz, Kabhi to tujhko bhi koi banaega shayar-e-khuda”

Allama Iqbal’s poetry carries profound messages of self-realization, spiritual awakening, and the pursuit of excellence. His verses continue to inspire people to reflect on their identity, connect with their roots, and strive for personal and collective growth.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz was a renowned Urdu poet, and one of his most celebrated love ghazals is “Dil-e-Nadaan Tujhe Hua Kya Hai.” Translation: Oh, naive heart, what has happened to you? What is it that has befallen your tender heart? In the midst of silence, in the valleys of twilight, The morning’s abode, the evening’s very beginning, That which was like a dream, remained as such, Some of it is lost, some of it remains concealed. You returned, but couldn’t call those, Who silently left, without revealing themselves. The heart, fragile and innocent, born, After you, it became the guardian of your way. The path of the heart, the path of the heart, I couldn’t reach that world, that world. In your eyes, there lies some charm, From your face to your tresses, some connections emerge. Connections emerge, yet the world of high knowledge, Where the eyes couldn’t reach, that world, that world. We know the reality of paradise, But, O God, make the dreams of the heart, a reality on this earth. Oh, naive heart, what has happened to you? What is it that has befallen your tender heart?

Statistical analysis can detect when ChatGPT is used to cheat on multiple-choice chemistry exams

by McKenzie Harris, Florida State University

Statistical analysis can detect when ChatGPT is used to cheat on multiple-choice chemistry exams

As the use of generative artificial intelligence continues to extend into all reaches of education, much of the concern related to its impact on cheating has focused on essays, essay exam questions and other narrative assignments. Use of AI tools such as ChatGPT to cheat on multiple-choice exams has largely gone ignored.

A Florida State University chemist is half of a research partnership whose latest work is changing what we know about this type of cheating, and their findings have revealed how the use of ChatGPT to cheat on general chemistry multiple-choice exams can be detected through specific statistical methods. The work was published in Journal of Chemical Education .

"While many educators and researchers try to detect AI assisted cheating in essays and open-ended responses, such as Turnitin AI detection, as far as we know, this is the first time anyone has proposed detecting its use on multiple-choice exams," said Ken Hanson, an associate professor in the FSU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. "By evaluating differences in performances between student- and ChatGPT-based multiple-choice chemistry exams, we were able to identify ChatGPT instances across all exams with a false positive rate of almost zero."

Researchers collected previous FSU student responses from five semesters worth of exams, input nearly 1,000 questions into ChatGPT and compared the outcomes. Average score and raw statistics were not enough to identify ChatGPT-like behavior because there are certain questions that ChatGPT always answered correctly or always answered incorrectly resulting in an overall score that was indistinguishable from students.

"That's the thing about ChatGPT—it can generate content, but it doesn't necessarily generate correct content," Hanson said. "It's simply an answer generator. It's trying to look like it knows the answer, and to someone who doesn't understand the material, it probably does look like a correct answer."

By using fit statistics, researchers fixed the ability parameters and refit the outcomes, finding ChatGPT's response pattern was clearly different from that of the students.

On exams, high-performing students frequently answer difficult and easy questions correctly, while average students tend to answer some difficult questions and most easy questions correctly. Low-performing students typically only answer easy questions correctly. But on repeated attempts by ChatGPT to complete an exam, the AI tool sometimes answered every easier question incorrectly and every hard question correctly. Hanson and Sorenson used these behavior differences to detect the use of ChatGPT with almost 100-percent accuracy.

The duo's strategy of employing a technique known as Rasch modeling and fit statistics can be readily applied to any and all generative AI chat bots, which will exhibit their own unique patterns to help educators identify the use of these chat bots in completing multiple-choice exams.

The research is the latest publication in a seven-year collaboration between Hanson and machine learning engineer Ben Sorenson.

Hanson and Sorenson, who first met in third grade, both attended St. Cloud State University in Minnesota for their undergraduate degrees and stayed in touch after moving into their careers. As a faculty member at FSU, Hanson became curious about measuring how much knowledge his students retained from lectures, courses and lab work.

"This was a conversation that I brought to Ben, who's great with statistics, computer science and data processing ," said Hanson, who is part of a group of FSU faculty working to improve student success in gateway STEM courses such as general chemistry and college algebra. "He said we could use statistical tools to understand if my exams are good, and in 2017, we started analyzing exams."

The core of this Rasch model is that a student's probability of getting any test question correct is a function of two things: how difficult the question is and the student's ability to answer the question. In this case, a student 's ability refers to how much knowledge they have and how many of the necessary components are needed to answer the question they have. Viewing the outcomes of an exam in this way provides powerful insights, researchers said.

"The collaboration between Ken and I, though remote, has been a really seamless, smooth process," Sorenson said. "Our work is a great way to provide supporting evidence when educators might already suspect that cheating may be happening. What we didn't expect was that the patterns of artificial intelligence would be so easy to identify."
