Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has four areas of study: Accounting and Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

We are looking for a PhD researcher to conduct research on racist hate speech. The studentship is funded by a Vice-Chancellor's scholarship at the University of Greenwich.

The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant community of academics and fellow PhD researchers based at our Greenwich campus in London, where they will be supervised by Professor Sofia Stathi, Dr Jo Kenrick, and Professor Jill Jameson. A comprehensive programme of ongoing training and career development is provided by the Research & Enterprise Training Institute (RETI) at the University of Greenwich.

About the Project 

Insulting statements intended to derogate an individual or group based on perceived attributes such as race are often referred to as hate speech. Racist hate speech is on the rise and threatens vulnerable groups as well as the cohesion of democratic societies. The Council of Europe explicitly highlights the link between hate speech and escalation to violence, and recommends attention and action via education and counter-speech. As such, the topic of hate speech requires urgent scholarly attention that not only highlights its consequences but also identifies strategies that tackle it.  

This PhD will focus on examining: 

(a) how witnessing racist hate speech influences bystanders, and (b) how to counter racist hate speech and enhance allyship with victimised ethnic groups. 

Both are important to protect and support victims, and to understand and support bystanders who are also (indirectly) affected.  Understanding these will provide a more nuanced perspective on the broader effects of racist hate speech and will highlight (individual and contextual) factors that can not only help tackle racist hate speech but also demonstrate allyship with victimised ethnic groups. 

The project will follow a study structure that is designed to allow for the progressive development of high-quality research, supporting growth and ambition. The successful candidate will need to be familiar with quantitative methodologies and will be encouraged to expand on the existing project plan, contributing their own ideas in consultation with the supervisory team.

The project must commence before the end of February 2025.

Duration:  

3 years Full-Time Study or 6 years Part-Time Study.

The scholarship is funded in line with the UKRI rate, currently £21,237 per annum (including London weighting of £2000). In addition, the successful candidate will receive a contribution to the cost of tuition fees at the home student rate (currently £4,786 Full-time). Overseas students who are successful will have to meet the difference between the home fee, included in the funding, and the overseas fee.

2024:Q2 Quarterly Highlights

Labor market conditions improved slightly for recent college graduates in the second quarter of 2024. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.5 percent and the underemployment rate inched lower to 40.5 percent.

This web feature tracks employment data for recent college graduates across the United States since 1990, allowing for a historical perspective on the experience of those moving into the labor market.

We describe the framework for this analysis in “Underemployment in the Early Careers of College Graduates following the Great Recession” (NBER Studies in Income and Wealth ) and “Are Recent College Graduates Finding Good Jobs?,” a 2014 article in the New York Fed’s Current Issues in Economics and Finance series. These papers examine more than two decades of data on the employment outcomes of recent college graduates across the United States, and contain more details and historical perspective.

We launched this web feature to make some of the data featured in these papers available on a timely and updated basis. New unemployment and underemployment data for recent college graduates post on a quarterly basis (typically in February, May, August, and November), and wages and outcome data for college graduates are released on an annual basis (typically in February). Data extend from 1990 to the present. Periodic analysis of these data are published on the Liberty Street Economics blog.

Our definition of underemployment is based on the kinds of jobs held by college graduates. A college graduate working in a job that typically does not require a college degree is considered underemployed. We use survey data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network (O*NET) Education and Training Questionnaire to help determine whether a bachelor’s degree is required to perform a job. The articles cited above describe our approach in detail.

Some additional research that utilizes these data include “Working as a Barista After College Is Not as Common as You Might Think” ( Liberty Street Economics ).

Our underemployment figures are calculated as a percentage holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, so they do include those with graduate and professional degrees. See the notes below the x-axis on the Underemployment chart for more detail.

The “Share with Graduate Degree” column in the table represents, for each college major, the percentage of workers with a bachelor’s degree that also possesses a graduate degree of any kind. For example, 50.2 percent of those with a bachelor’s degree in history also possess some kind of graduate degree, based on February 2022 data.

No. Through 2023:Q2, we examined the types of jobs held by those who are underemployed, categorizing jobs broadly by skill level and pay to generate time series data for the percentages of graduates holding “good non-college jobs” and “low-wage jobs.” Starting with the 2023:Q3 update, the web feature will no longer include the data series for "underemployed job types," although historical data remain available for download .

In our definition, early career graduates are those aged 22 to 27, and mid-career graduates are those aged 35 to 45.

Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn is seeking a highly skilled Graduate Admission Coordinator to join the College of Business Graduate Student Services office. This role combines admissions evaluation, academic advising, and data management. The successful candidate will oversee the graduate admission process, provide academic guidance to prospective and current students, and support rankings surveys and other data-intensive projects. The position involves a special focus on international student applications and plays a key role in recruiting and yield efforts.

Responsibilities*

Application Reviews (35%)

  • Conduct thorough evaluations of graduate applications, with a special focus on international applicants. Recalculate GPAs for international transcripts to convert them to the 4.0 scale.
  • Assess international course equivalency for admission prerequisites, waivers, exemptions, and transfer credits, collaborating with department chairs and faculty as necessary.
  • Supervise the graduate records specialist in initial application reviews, ensuring accurate assessment of qualifying work experience for rankings.
  • Provide admit/deny recommendations for international and domestic applicants.  

Advising, Recruiting, and Admissions Counseling (35%)

  • Advise prospective and current students on program options, admission criteria, and the application process, with specialized knowledge of international requirements.
  • Address inquiries via phone, email, virtual, and in-person meetings.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance admission yield each semester.
  • Assist in planning and executing graduate recruiting events, focusing on international student engagement.
  • Provide academic advising support to current graduate students as needed.
  • Represent Graduate Student Services on relevant College of Business committees, such as the Scholarships Committee.  

Data Reporting and Management (20%)

  • Coordinate the completion and submission of numerous major rankings surveys (U.S. News, The Princeton Review, Poets & Quants, etc.).
  • Collect, analyze, and report data from various sources, ensuring accuracy in rankings submissions.
  • Maintain internal reports on admissions and enrollment and serve as the primary liaison with ITS for report development and troubleshooting.  

Admission Process Management (10%)

  • Oversee the internal application routing process, ensuring smooth communication between the central Graduate Studies office and admissions committee members.
  • Manage relationships with external testing organizations (GMAT, GRE, TOEFL) and coordinate related logistics.
  • Supervise and support the graduate records specialist in student communications and document management.
  • Represent the College of Business in relevant governance groups and committees.  

Other Duties:

  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives and suggest process enhancements.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.  

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor?s degree required; a master?s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with demonstrated reliability and accuracy in a professional setting.
  • Strong data management skills, including advanced proficiency with Excel and Google Sheets.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, multi-step processes independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to handle a high volume of inquiries professionally.

**Recruitment Incentive** Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (as defined in 5 CFR 575.102 ) will be offered a $20,000 incentive.
