Q: How do I check whether my devices have the crash detection option available?

A: A recent tragedy involving a car that went off a cliff was reported in real-time by an Apple Watch that the person in the vehicle was wearing.

Authorities said the automated call included coordinates and an approximate search radius, which helped first responders locate the crash site more quickly.

The vehicle went down a 1,000-foot cliff at night, which would have made locating the crash much more difficult without the information delivered by the Apple Watch.

Having this feature enabled on devices that offer it could be the difference between life and death, as time is of the essence in many emergencies.

How it works

Newer smartphones and smartwatches use various motion sensors, such as an accelerometer and gyroscope, combined with ambient audio from the microphone to detect that a user has been involved in a car crash.

Device orientation can be detected by the magnetometer and a barometer can detect atmospheric pressure changes from air bags deploying or a window breaking during a crash.

All these sensors combined with an algorithm that can process the data quickly can cause an automated call for help.

Apple smartphones and smartwatches

If you have an iPhone 14 or later or an Apple Watch Series 8, SE or Ultra with WatchOS 9 or later, the crash detection option is available and turned on by default.

If you want to make sure it’s activated on iPhones, go to the Settings app, tap “Emergency SOS” and make sure the “Call After Severe Crash” is enabled (green).

While you are on this page, click “Set up Emergency Contacts in Health” if you want to alert a friend or family member as well. Click the “Edit” option in the upper right corner to add emergency contacts

This will also update your Apple Watch, which you can confirm by going to “Settings” then “SOS.”

Google Pixel smartphones and watches

If you have a Pixel 4a or later, the “Personal Safety” app is preloaded or you can add it via the Play Store on the Pixel 3a or earlier models.

“Car Crash Detection” is not enabled by default and there is a more involved setup process that requires you to grant access to location services and other privacy-related items.

The easiest way to get started is by going to “Settings” and searching for “Car Crash Detection.”

Pixel Watch 2 users can turn on and use the safety features on the Personal Safety app in the Play Store .

Samsung devices

As of this writing, Samsung does not offer crash detection, but “Fall Detection” is available in their smartwatches.

False positives

It’s entirely possible to have crash detection activated during nonemergency situations, which is why every device alerts the user before triggering an emergency call. Vigorous movement with your hands, such as overly enthusiastic clapping during a sporting event while wearing a smartwatch is one example posted on various online forums.

If you simply hit cancel (Apple and Samsung) or say you are OK (Google) within the 30 to 60-second countdown, your device will not call emergency services.

Democrats unveil theme and featured speakers for 2024 Democratic National Convention

Every four years, the Democratic Party hosts a multi-day convention for thousands of supporters to come together and nominate their candidate for their presidency in an emotive process and this year is no exception.

This year, the convention will be set in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris will accept the Democratic presidential nomination after securing the majority of the delegates earlier this month.

The convention theme will be "For the People, For Our Future," a message inspired by Harris' previous campaign motto as district attorney – "Kamala Harris, For the People."

While the convention itself is expected to draw between 5,000 and 7,000 delegates and alternate delegates, city officials expect the event will draw an estimated 50,000 visitors to the city throughout the week.

“A credential to get into the Chicago Democratic National Convention is a hotter ticket than a Taylor Swift concert,” Chris Korge, national finance chair for the Democratic National Committee, told NBC News . “We have to tell people there’s a limit to how many people we can get into the convention.”

When and Where Is the 2024 Democratic National Convention?

The convention will be held over four days starting Monday, Aug. 19, and ending Thursday, Aug. 22 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. It will host events from 7-11 p.m. ET.

Who will be speaking at the convention?

Among the several speakers expected to take the stage , the convention will feature familiar faces such as President Joe Biden and former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden are expected to take the stage on the first night of the convention. Other speakers include Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

Biden’s aides said Biden will use his remarks to deliver the argument for why he believes Harris must replace him and defeat Trump, whom he says is a threat to democracy. Biden will also play up some of his popular  accomplishments  before he steps out of the spotlight for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, to take center stage the rest of the week, the aides said.

Speakers at the convention are expected to make reference to Biden’s accomplishments, from helping lead the country out of the COVID-19 pandemic to winning passage of major infrastructure, climate and health care investments. Harris has used Biden’s policies as the foundation of her own  policy  plans.

Other notable speakers at the convention include Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, former Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.

When will Harris and Walz deliver their acceptance speeches?

Walz will deliver his vice presidential acceptance speech on Wednesday. Harris will give her presidential acceptance speech on Thursday, according to the DNC.

How to watch the DNC convention live?

NBC News will air a special report on this NBC station from 10 p.m. ET to 11 p.m. ET each night of the convention.

The convention will also be available on via streaming through  Peacock.

The primetime DNC coverage will air live from the United Center on the following dates/times:

The second day of the Democratic National Convention featured powerful speeches from former First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama. Now, Day 3 will spotlight Vice Presidential Nominee Tim Walz and the campaign’s commitment to safeguarding America's freedoms. On Tuesday night, the DNC orchestrated a jazzed-up ceremonial roll call vote. DJ Cassidy introduced delegations from each state with their own song, like Jay Z’s “Empire State of Mind” for New York and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” for Alabama. Celebrities like Lil Jon, Spike Lee, Eva Longoria, and Wendell Pierce were also there to represent their states.

Each convention day is related to the DNC 2024’s theme, “For the People, For Our Future.” Wednesday’s theme is “A Fight for Our Freedoms,” where speakers from the party will discuss how Harris will work to protect America’s freedoms, including reproductive rights.

According to organizers, the night will center on Walz as a “champion for America’s working families and a staunch defender of those same fundamental freedoms.” Democrats say they will try to emphasize Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump’s efforts to “strip our rights away” while he was in office and what he plans to do if he wins in 2024.

Actress and comedian Mindy Kaling will be the celebrity host for Day 3 of the DNC. Kaling is best known for portraying Kelly Kapoor on The Office and creating popular shows like Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls . Actress Kerry Washington will take over as the celebrity host for the final night.

Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago is scheduled to start on Wednesday, August 21, at around 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. Speakers will likely take the stage later in the evening, with the keynote address typically beginning around 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT.

Who Will Speak At The DNC On Day 3?

Several high-profile Democrats are anticipated to speak on Wednesday night, including former President Bill Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is set to deliver the keynote address on Wednesday evening. The former social studies teacher and high school football coach is expected to accept the Democratic nomination.

You can watch the DNC on major cable news channels, including CBS News, ABC News, Fox News, CNN, NewsNation, NBC News, MSNBC, and C-SPAN. If you don't have cable, you can stream the networks on live TV streaming platforms like DirecTV , Fubo and Hulu+ Live TV , all of which are currently offering free trials.

The DNC will also be available on streaming services like Max (CNN only), Paramount+ (CBS only), and Peacock (NBC only). Additionally, the DNC’s official YouTube channel will stream Day 3 of the convention for free from 7 p.m. ET to 11 p.m. ET.
