Fully Funded MFA and PhD Programs in Art and Design

As part of my series on  How to Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list of universities that offer full funding for a MFA and PhD Programs in Art and Design, which, in addition to preparing you to work as a professional artist in your field, can lead to careers in academia, consulting, and curating for museums, among others. With the average cost of a Master’s and Doctoral degree nearing or exceeding $100,000, gaining admission to a fully funded program is ideal.

“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the three to six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is complementary to your studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

1. Duke University, PhD in Art History and Visual Culture

(Durham, NC): The Graduate School provides Ph.D. students with a stipend, payment of tuition, and fee support for their first five years of study, as well as health insurance for the first six years if students are on the Duke student medical insurance plan. After their fifth year, students are responsible for tuition and fees, and most of our students obtain external or departmental funding to cover those costs.

2. Illinois State University, MFA in Art

(Normal, Il, IL): The University provides graduate assistantships as a means of financial support. Monthly wages paid in the form of either a stipend or an hourly wage, waiver for 100% of tuition during a semester of appointment, a waiver for up to 12 credit hours of tuition for the summer term immediately following a fall or spring appointment are included.

3. North Carolina State College of Design, PhD in Design

(Raleigh, NC): The PhD in Design program provides generous support for the students, which includes full tuition, stipend, and health insurance. This level of support is a minimum for the three years or more of the students’ study period.

4. Ohio State University, MFA in Visual Arts

(Columbus, OH): Most students accepted into the MFA Program are funded with a Graduate Associate appointment, which requires working 20 hours a week in exchange for a fee authorization (payment of tuition) and a stipend. These appointments may include teaching introductory courses, assisting in department labs, and working for The Arts Initiative.

5. Stanford University, MFA in Art Practice

(Stanford, CA): Through a combination of fellowship funds and teaching assistantships, each Art Practice graduate student normally receives an aid package that includes tuition and stipend as well as small materials grants.

6. Tulane University, MFA in Studio Art

(New Orleans, LA): All admitted graduate students receive a full tuition waiver and a generous assistantship stipend.

7. University of Arkansas, MFA in Studio Art

(Fayetteville, AR): All students in the M.F.A. Studio Art program are fully supported.  We are able to provide full assistantships to all of our M.F.A.’s. The assistantship includes a full tuition waiver and a stipend that will increase next year to $15,000 annually, plus  a Graduate Fellowship in the amount of $4,000 per year,  for a total package of $19,000 of support per year

8. University of California, Davis, MFA in Art Studio

(Davis, CA): The Art Studio MFA Program offers substantial financial support through paid Teaching Assistant positions each quarter and through Art Studio Program Fellowships, made possible by generous private endowments.

9. University of Connecticut, MFA in Studio Art

(Storrs, CT): Fully funded program providing both tuition remission, stipend, and health insurance.

10. University of Georgia, MFA in in Studio Art

(Athens, GA): All full-time students of the three-year MFA program are fully funded. Applicants will be automatically considered for departmental assistantships. Funding is also available from various sources to offset the cost of materials and travel related to graduate research.

11. University of Michigan, MFA in Art & Design

(Ann Arbor, MI): The Stamps School offers generous financial support to graduate students, in addition to teaching and research assistantships, stipends, and discretionary funds.

12. University of South Florida, MFA in Studio Art

(Tampa, FL): Every current graduate student in the School of Art & Art History receives a full tuition waiver plus either a scholarship OR a graduate assistantship. The USF School of Art & Art History offers two graduate degree programs: Master of Arts in Art History and Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art.

13. University of Oregon, MFA in Art

The Department of Art provides generous funding for MFA Candidates during their three years of study. All students in good standing are given free tuition through a combination of Graduate Employee Fellowship support and tuition remissions.

Who Should Apply for These Art Scholarships?

The following art scholarships are aimed at students who are creative and have spent time in high school developing their artistic talent. Art careers are not the easiest to pursue, so you’ll have to demonstrate a passion for your chosen art form in order to show that you have real potential.

Art scholarships can cover many different disciplines, including performing arts, fine arts, design, and more. In this list, I have covered available scholarships for the following disciplines:

• Performing arts , such as drama, film, television, and broadcasting
• Photography
• Fine arts , such as drawing, painting, and sculpture
• Video game design
• Music , including voice and instrumental
• Design, including graphic design , interior design , sound design, and industrial design

Scholarships that cover more than one area of art will be listed in each relevant category.

Though many art scholarships are specific to a particular college or university, the scholarships listed below can be used at many different schools. To earn the most money for college, you should apply to as many of these scholarships as possible and also inquire at your college about opportunities for scholarships for your particular program.

Be aware that this is not an exhaustive list of art scholarships. If you don’t see something that looks like it could be a fit for the kind of art you do, make sure you do more research about scholarships in your field. There are probably a few out there!

Also, keep in mind that most art scholarships are offered directly through universities. When you're considering applying to a school, be sure to ask about any art scholarships they might have that you'd be eligible for.

Performing Arts Scholarships

First, let's take a look at the best performing arts scholarships currently available.

Aiko Susanna Tashiro Hiratsuka Memorial Scholarship

This art scholarship is for active Student/Individual members of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Applicants must be entering college freshmen, undergraduate, graduate, or law students; in the creative and performing arts; or demonstrating financial need.

• Deadline: March 2023 (for incoming college freshmen) and April 2023 (for all other students)
• Award Amount: Varies depending on scholarship

Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program

South Carolina high school seniors may apply if they have attended a public high school in South Carolina for at least two years and plan to attend a college or university in South Carolina as well. There are five categories of scholarships:

• Creative writing: Any original composition utilizing any form of creative writing (including journal or diary entries, letters, memoirs, essays, poetry, storytelling, speeches, and free writing). Entry should not exceed two, double-spaced pages in length.
• Dance: A three- to six-minute original dance routine
• Music: A four- to 10-minute original composition
• Theatre: An original one-act play that is eight to 15 minutes long
• Visual arts: An original 2-D visual piece of art

Applicants are judged on creativity, originality, and quality.

• Deadline: Mid-February 2023
• Award Amount: $2,000 (five available)

Bruce Marson Memorial Scholarship

This performing arts scholarship is geared toward Fairfax County (Virginia) high school students (educated via either public school, private school, or home-schooling) who are seeking a degree in Technical Theatre Production.

• Deadline: May 2023
• Award Amount: $2,000

Case Western Reserve University Theater Scholarships

Case Western offers four full-tuition scholarships, as well as two $10,000 scholarships, for students who wish to major/minor in theater or pursue theater as an extracurricular. All students must complete an audition or present a portfolio of their work.

• Deadline: January 2023 for application packet; February 2023 for digital portfolio presentations and interviews and for in-person portfolio presentations and interviews
• Award Amount: Full tuition or $10,000

Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Performing  Arts Scholarship

To qualify, you must be a full-time undergraduate student or graduating high school senior and have a minimum 2.5 out of 4.0 GPA, and be pursuing a major and a career in the performing or visual arts. These scholarships are intended for African-American students.

• Deadline: Late April 2023
• Award Amount: Up to $5,000

Educational Theatre Association Thespian Scholarships

Each year, the Educational Theatre Association awards several scholarships to students in the performing arts. These scholarships are open to students ranging from high school sophomores all the way to college juniors! Note that some scholarships require attendance at the International Thespian Festival . Currently, there are 12 different scholarship opportunities available, and four grants to attend the International Thespian Festival.

• Deadline: April 2023, depending on scholarship

Florence Lemcke Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts

This fine arts scholarship, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Washington, is for graduating high school seniors in Washington State who are also a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a veteran. Applicants must plan to pursue a degree in the fine arts, such as painting, drawing, photography, literature, architecture, sculpture, poetry, music, dance, or drama.

• Deadline: March 1, 2023
• Award Amount: $1,000

Georgia Thespian Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded to 12 high school seniors who participate in Georgia Thespians. All auditioning students must be registered for GA Thespian Conference 2023 and pay a $25 registration fee. Award amounts are as follows:

• Gerald Ray Horne Scholarship: $2,500
• Yatesy Harvey Theatre Educator Scholarship: $2,000
• Frank Pruet & Eric Ebell Vision and Innovation Scholarship for Leadership: $2,000
• Pam Ware Leadership Scholarship: $2,000
• Linda P. Wise Performance Scholarship: $2,000
• Gene & Imelda Bell Service Scholarship: $2,000
• Dwight Gilstrap Technical Scholarship: $2,000

Iowa Scholarship for the Arts

This award is for high school seniors who are Iowa residents and excel in the arts. Students must be accepted to an Iowa college or university and plan to major in the fine arts, performing arts, or creative writing.

• Deadline: April 2023
• Award Amount: $3,000

Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships

This scholarship is open to high school seniors up through current graduate students. There are 16 regional awards and two national awards available. Note that the awards are not necessarily limited to education in the theatre arts.

• Award Amount: Varies from $500 up to $5,000

John L. Dales Scholarship Fund

Applicants must be active members of the Screen Actor’s Guild or children of members. Required materials include SAT/ACT scores and transcripts.

• Deadline: Late May 2023

Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Scholarships

OAB offers several scholarships to students enrolled in Oklahoma colleges or universities who are majoring in broadcasting. Students must be either juniors or seniors in college, have a minimum B average, and plan to work in broadcasting. Selection is based on students' extracurricular activities and awards, broadcast industry experience, financial need, and an essay.

• Deadline: February 3, 2023
• Award Amount: Six awards of $2,000 each

Vivian Klemz Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be in high school (generally between the ages of 14 and 19). Students must write a 10-minute script (of any genre) that incorporates the theme of disability. Note that applicants must have a disability (or, if applying as an ensemble, at least one student must have a disability).

• Deadline:  January 2023

VSA Playwright Discovery Award

Applicants must be in grades 6 through 12 (ages 11-18 for non-US students). Students must write a 10-minute script (of any genre) that incorporates the theme of disability. Note that applicants must have a disability (or, if applying as an ensemble, at least one student must have a disability).

• Deadline: Mid-March 2023 
• Award Amount: Ranges from $3,000 to $20,000

Dance Scholarships

• Creative writing: An original composition (journals/diaries, poetry, letters, memoirs, essays, storytelling, etc.) that is no longer than two double-spaced pages

Jean Lee/Jeff Marvin Collegiate Scholarships

Each year, Indiana SHAPE awards six scholarships to undergraduates who are attending an Indiana college or university and are majoring in health, physical education, recreation, dance, or exercise science. Applicants are evaluated on several factors, such as their GPAs, potential as professionals, financial need, and recommendation letters.

• Deadline: January 2023
• Award Amount: Six annual $1,000 awards

Mary Benevento/CTAHPERD Scholarship

This scholarship is for high school seniors from Connecticut who plan to major in dance or another physical/health education field at a Connecticut college or university. Students will be judged based on their academic ability, professional competence, and future career potential. Applicants must submit transcripts, a 300-word essay, and a letter of recommendation.

• Deadline: June 15, 2023
• Award Amount: Up to $1,000

NYCDA Foundation College Scholarship Program

For these dance scholarships, applicants must have recently completed their junior or senior year of high school and plan to pursue a performance-based major. In addition, they must attend an audition and submit a letter of recommendation from a dance instructor. Scholarships last for four years of college.

• Deadline: July 5, 2023
• Award Amount: Ranges from $5,000 to $25,000

Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship

Applicants must be members of SHAPE America, be majoring in dance or another physical/health education field, and be college juniors or seniors with GPAs of 3.5 or above. Selection is based on academics, leadership, community service, and character.

• Deadline: October 15, 2023
• Award Amount: $1,250 for undergraduate students and $1,750 for graduate students

Photography Scholarships

AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships

These scholarships are for students studying fine art, graphic design, illustration, or photography. Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA, display financial need, and submit a portfolio of their work. Minority status is a significant factor in award decisions.

Bodie McDowell Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students who are working (or plan to work in) in outdoor communications, which includes print, photography, film, art, and/or broadcasting. Eligible students must submit examples of work and letters of recommendation. Academic achievement is considered but isn't a major deciding factor.

• Deadline : March 30, 2023
• Award Amount: Varies, but usually is between $1,000 and $5,000

Fine Arts and Writing Scholarships

Against the Grain Artistic Scholarship

This scholarship is open to Asian American and/or Pacific Islander high school seniors and college students who are majoring in performing, visual arts, journalism and/or mass communications. Eligible students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

• Deadline : May 31, 2023
• Award Amount : $1,000

Beall Scholarship

Applicants for this scholarship must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Female, 35 years old or younger
• Member of the Presbyterian Church (USA)
• Resident of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia
• Demonstrate financial need

Applicants must be pursuing graduate study in the fine arts.

• Deadline: June 30, 2023

Cynthia and Alan Baran Fine Arts and Music Scholarship Fund

Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college or university, be taking at least six credit hours, and be enrolled in a BFA, BA in Studio Art, MFA, or BA/MA in Music program. Students must be studying painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, or printmaking. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.

Esther Kanagawa Memorial Art Scholarship

Applicants must be Hawaii residents and undergraduate or graduate students majoring in the fine arts at an accredited college or university. They must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher and demonstrate financial need and good character.

Lois Livingston McMillen Fund

This scholarship is for women from Connecticut who are studying the fine arts. Preference is given to those studying the visual arts of painting or design.

This scholarship is for students of any major who intend to pursue a career in the development of interactive entertainment, such as animation, programming, and game design. Applicants must be at least sophomores in college and have a minimum 3.3 GPA.

• Award Amount: $2,500

WomenIn Scholarship Fund

This award is aimed toward women who want to enter the interactive entertainment industry. This scholarship is open to women pursuing or intending to pursue careers in game development or the business of interactive entertainment.

Music Scholarships

Here are some of the best music scholarships you can apply for.

AMCA Music Scholarships

The Associated Male Choruses of America sponsors scholarships for students who will be majoring in vocal music studies or instrumental music (though preference is given to the former). Applicants must be sponsored by a member chorus of the AMCA and are required to submit an application, a transcript, and three letters of recommendation.

• Deadline: March 1 each year 
• Award Amount: $1,000-$1,200

Doris & Clarence Glick Classical Music Scholarship

This scholarship, sponsored by the Hawaii Community Foundation, is for students from Hawaii who are currently attending a non-profit college in the US. Students must be majoring in music with an emphasis on classical music, demonstrate financial need, and have a 2.7 GPA or above.

• Award Amount: Varies but is approximately $1,500

Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition

Scholarships are awarded annually to both vocalists and instrumentalists and may be used for any education-related expenses. Only high school seniors and college freshmen are eligible. Applicants must submit an audition CV with two tracks of contest-level material in contrasting styles as well as an essay. Finalists will have to perform in person. 

• Deadline: Early March 2023
• Award Amount: $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third place

The John Lennon Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to student songwriters and composers who work in contemporary musical genres like alternative, pop, rock, indie, electronica, R&B, and experimental. In order to qualify, students must be between the ages of 17 and 24, a current college student or alumnus of a U.S. university, and have not worked previously with a major record label. Applicants must submit an original song win in order to apply.

• Deadline: Spring 2023
• Award Amount: $20,000

Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship

This scholarship is for students pursuing an education in piano or voice. Preference is given to students of the Duke Ellington School of Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Applicants must upload their audio material as an MP3.

• Deadline: February 15 every year 
• Award Amount: One-time award of $5,000

Women Band Directors International Scholarships

Women Band Directors International offers five different scholarships for women who plan on becoming a band director. A student in any college grade level may apply, though applicants must be majoring in music (any instrumental focus is okay). The application includes two letters of recommendation and a statement about why you want to be a band director.

American Institute of Graphic Arts Honolulu Chapter Scholarship Fund

Applicants must be residents of Hawaii, be attending college in the U.S., and majoring graphic design, visual communication, or commercial arts. They must also show financial need and have a 2.7 GPA or above.

• Deadline: January 31, 2023

This scholarship is for students of any major who intend to pursue a career in the development of interactive entertainment, such as animation, programming, game design, and music composition. Applicants must be at least sophomores in college and have a minimum 3.3 GPA.

ASID Foundation Legacy Scholarships

This scholarship is open to interior design students in their junior or senior year of college. To apply, students must submit a portfolio with 8-12 work examples, a personal statement, a letter of recommendation, a portfolio statement, a transcript, and a headshot. Scholarships are awarded based on the combination of applicants' academic accomplishment, creative achievement, and personal statement.

• Award Amount: $4,000

IFDA Leaders Commemorative Scholarship

For this International Furnishings and Design Association scholarship, applicants must be majoring in interior design or a related design/furnishing program. Extra consideration is given to students who have volunteered and demonstrated leadership potential. The application requires a letter of recommendation, an essay, and two different examples of your design work.

IFDA Student Membership Scholarship

For this International Furnishings and Design Association scholarship, applicants must be majoring in interior design or a related design/furnishing program. Extra consideration is given to students who have volunteered and demonstrated leadership potential. The application requires a letter of recommendation from a current IFDA Professional Member, an essay, and two to three different examples of your design work.

IIDA Student of the Year Award

This scholarship was created to recognize a student who is a member of the International Interior Design Association and who has significantly impacted his or her school’s interior design program through leadership, insight, and involvement. Applicants must be IIDA student members in good academic standing.

• Award Amount: $5,000

IIDA Wilsonart Essay Competition

This scholarship recognizes a student member of the International Interior Design Association who has taken part in a student-mentoring week and who plans to have a career in interior design. This competition encourages leadership and mentoring between students and professionals. Students must submit an essay of 500-750 words about their mentoring experience.

Joel Polsky Academic Achievement Award

Deadline: February 22, 2021 Amount: $2,000 This art scholarship is open to South Carolina high school seniors who have attended a South Carolina public high school for at least two years and will be remaining in the state for college or university. There are five categories (creative writing, dance, music, theater, and visual art scholarships), each requiring an original submission.

Against The Grain Artistic Scholarship

Deadline: May 31, 2022 Amount: $1,000 This communications and art scholarship is open to Asian-American college students (at least 50% Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity) pursuing a major in performing arts, visual arts, journalism, or mass communications. The recipient must be either a high school senior or a full-time college student at a U.S. vocational school, junior college, or college/university, and must be a full-time, degree-seeking student by the upcoming academic calendar year.

AIGA Worldstudio Scholarships

Deadline: TBD Amount: Up to $6,000 These scholarships for artists go to students studying fine art, graphic design, illustration, or photography, and who have at least a 2.0 GPA. Applicants must display financial needs and submit a portfolio of original work. Minority status is a significant factor in award decisions.

Catherine W. Pierce Scholarship

Deadline: May 19, 2022 Amount: Up to $3,600 This scholarship for the arts is open to college students majoring in art or art history. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or over. The application includes a one-page essay.

CBC Spouses Visual Art and Performing Art Scholarships

Deadline: January 2022 Amount: Varies This broad arts scholarship is open to African-American or black students majoring in the visual arts (architecture, ceramics, drawing, fashion, graphic design, illustration, interior design, painting, photography, sketching, video production, etc.), or in the performing arts (theater, drama, comedy, music, dance, opera, marching bands, etc.). Deadline: TBD Amount: Varies One of the few art graduate school scholarships, this option is open to both undergraduate or graduate students in a BFA, BA in Studio Art, MFA, or BA/MA in Music program at an accredited college or university. The art scholarship portion of the fund is limited to those studying painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, or printmaking. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.

Dorian De Long Arts & Music Scholarship

Deadline: March 1, 2022 Amount: $1,500 to $2,000 This art scholarship is open to graduating high school students who intend to pursue advanced education in the study of arts and will be majoring or minoring in either the visual or performing arts.

Esther Kanagawa Memorial Art Scholarship

Deadline: February 15, 2022 Amount: Varies Open to current high school seniors living in Hawaii who plan to major in fine arts at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher and demonstrate financial need.

Florence Lemcke Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts

Deadline: April 25, 2021 Amount: $1,000 Open to graduating high school seniors in Washington State who are studying the fine arts (painting, drawing, photography, literature, architecture, sculpture, poetry, music, dance, or drama). Applicants must also be the child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a veteran.

Gold Grant Scholarship Award

Deadline: TBD Amount: $2,000 This art scholarship is open to full-time undergrad art majors, including graduating college seniors, enrolled in a community college or university in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. Students must submit an application that includes five examples of their best work in non-digital 2D media, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, an artist’s statement, and a biography.

Iowa Scholarship for the Arts

Deadline: April 1, 2022 Amount: $1,500 This fine arts scholarship is open to high school seniors residing in Iowa. Students must also be accepted to an Iowa college or university, and plan to major in fine arts.

Jay Franke Scholarship

Deadline: April 15, 2022 Amount: $4,000 Incoming freshmen with Type 1 diabetes who are pursuing a degree in music, theater, or dance can apply for this art scholarship.

Lois Livingston McMillen Fund

Deadline: March 15, 2022 Amount: $500 to $4,000 Open to women from Connecticut studying fine arts, with preference given to those studying painting or design.

Lyly Koenig Mendez Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: June 30, 2021 Amount: $1,000 This arts scholarship is open to Asian-American (at least 50% Asian and/or Pacific Islander) students pursuing a major in fashion and/or graphic design. Students must be full-time high school seniors or college students and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students must also demonstrate community and extracurricular involvement.

Ritchie M. Gregory Fund

Deadline: January 31, 2022 Amount: Varies Open to college or university students and current Hawaii residents who are majoring in art and have a GPA of at least 2.7. Awards are given based on academic achievement, character, and financial need.

Sub Pop Loser Scholarship

Deadline: March 24, 2021 Amount: $3,000 to $7,000 Arguably the hippest art scholarship on this list, the Loser Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors living in Washington and Oregon who are on their way to full-time enrollment in university or college (though they need not necessarily be studying art). Applicants must write an essay about their involvement in their local art or music scene. Copies of their artwork, photos of community involvement, videos, etc. are also encouraged.

Zinggia Art Scholarship

Deadline: March 6, 2021 Amount: $2,000 Open to Ohio high school students interested in pursuing a career in art-related fields (including painting, illustration, design, photography, printmaking, sculpture, etc.).

Lucie Foundation Emerging Scholarships

Deadline: September 15, 2021 Amount: $1,000-$2,500 This photography scholarship is open to photographers 18 years and older worldwide who are enrolled as a student; in the first five years of their photography career; or do not earn the majority of their income from photography. Applicants must submit a project outline detailing how the scholarship money will be spent, as well as a selection of digital images.

National Press Photographers Foundation Scholarships

Deadline: TBD Amount: $2,000 Open to students enrolled full-time in an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S. or Canada who show an aptitude for photojournalism. Students must demonstrate financial need and be able to use the scholarship at the beginning of the following semester.

Mary Benevento/CTAHPERD Scholarship

Deadline: June 15, 2022 Amount: $1,000 Open to high school seniors from Connecticut who plan to major in dance (or another physical/health education field) at a Connecticut college or university. Students will be judged based on academic ability, professional competence, and future career potential.

NYCDA Foundation College Scholarship Program

Deadline: July 6, 2021 Amount: $5,000 to $160,000 (most awards are between $5,000 and $25,000) This dance scholarship is open to applicants who have recently completed their junior or senior year of high school. Applicants must attend an audition and submit a letter of recommendation from a dance instructor. Scholarships last for four years of college.

Graphic Design Scholarships

Deadline: May 1, 2022 Amount: $2,000 Open to students pursuing a career within the document management and graphic communication industry. Applicants for the graphic design scholarship must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be a full-time student attending an accredited college or university for the upcoming fall semester.

Cheryl Lynn Rutledge Northern Indigenous Student Award

Deadline: May 1, 2021 Amount: $1,000 This graphic design scholarship is open to Indigenous students (with preference given to those from Yukon, Nunavut or NWT) pursuing full-time education in graphic or communication design at a Canadian college or university. Applicants must be a member of Graphic Designers of Canada, and must provide portfolio samples and a brief essay.

GDC Foundation Ray Hrynkow Scholarship

Deadline: May 1, 2021 Amount: $1,000 Another offering from Graphic Designers of Canada, this design scholarship is open to students entering the third or fourth year of a four-year undergraduate communication/graphic design program in Canada. Applicants must be a member of Graphic Designers of Canada. Applications must include a design project demonstrating problem-solving through communication design.

TLMI Four Year College Degree Scholarship

Deadline: TBD Amount: $5,000 Open to college juniors and seniors who are majoring in graphic arts, graphic design, or a different major, and who are interested in a career in the tag and label industry. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, supply three personal references, and submit an essay.

Film Scholarships

Francis d. lyon scholarship.

Deadline: March 1, 2022 Amount: $3,000 This film scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students who have completed two full years of college by June 30 of the year the scholarship is being awarded. Awards are given based on evidence of talent (work samples are encouraged), academic excellence, and financial need.

UFVF/KODAK Student Scholarship Program

Deadline: TBD Amount: $2,000 to $5,000 This film scholarship, sponsored by film giant Kodak, is open to graduate or undergraduate university/college students in a number of countries worldwide. Prizes are awarded in filmmaking and cinematography.

Drawing Scholarships

The john f. and anna lee stacey scholarship fund.

Deadline: February 1, 2022 Amount: $500 to $5,000 Students dedicated to “classical or conservative” painting and drawing may want to apply for this art scholarship. Applicants must submit a portfolio of original art (including landscapes and figure drawing) with their application.

Animation Scholarships

Mister rogers memorial scholarship.

Deadline: TBD Amount: $5,000 Yep, that Mister Rogers. This scholarship, created in honor of TV personality Fred Rogers, is open to graduate students (Masters or Ph.D), or those about to enter graduate school, who are pursuing a career in children’s media, including animation. (This scholarship is based on project proposals, and may not be used for tuition.)

Randy Pausch Scholarship Fund

Deadline: May 31, 2021 Amount: $2,500 Open to students pursuing careers specializing in interactive entertainment, including art, animation, programming, engineering, game direction, game design, sound design, and music composition. Students must have a minimum 3.3 GPA and be either full-time undergraduate students starting their second year or graduate student.

Women In Animation Scholarship

Deadline: TBD Amount: $1,000 Open to female-identified, full-time students at an accredited school within North America that offers courses in animation. Students must be a member of Women In Animation, have a GPA of 2.85 or higher, and submit a portfolio of original work.

Performing Arts Scholarships

Aiko susanna tashiro hiratsuka memorial scholarship.

Deadline: March 1, 2021 Amount: Varies This performing arts scholarship is open to active student/individual members of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) studying performing arts. Up to 30 scholarships are awarded annually.

Donna Reed Performing Arts Scholarship

Deadline: July 30, 2021 Amount: Up to $1,000 This scholarship for the arts is open to performing arts students in Iowa. Applicants must submit a video audition, headshot, and a letter of recommendation from a drama educator to apply.

Educational Theatre Association Thespian Scholarships

Deadline: Depending on the scholarship Amount: $500 to $4,000 This group of performing art scholarships is open to students at various levels of theater study (from graduating high school senior to college senior).

Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship

Deadline: TBD Amount: $500 to $3,000 Open to student performers wishing to pursue further education and professional development. This theater scholarship offers roughly 16 regional awards ($500 each); select recipients are invited to take week-long, expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C. for courses, and to present their scholarship audition to a panel. The top two will receive $2,500 scholarships.

Fashion Design Scholarships

Deadline: January 7, 2022 Amount: Up to $3,000 (renewable) This fashion design scholarship is open to students who are studying design with a focus on footwear. Applicants must be enrolled or be about to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school. Interior Design Scholarships

Asid foundation legacy scholarships.

Deadline: Spring 2021 Amount: $4,000 This interior design scholarship features separate prizes for undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants are asked to submit portfolios and letters of recommendation; the graduate scholarship also requires an essay. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic accomplishment and creative achievement.

Bienenstock Furniture and Interior Design Competition

Deadline: TBD Amount: $1,500 to $5,000 Open to junior, senior, or graduate students enrolled in an accredited college design program in the United States. Separate prizes are awarded for interior design and furniture design.

David Barrett Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: Fall 2021 Amount: $12,000 This interior design scholarship, open to undergraduate and graduate students, recognizes those who “demonstrate an interest and ability in utilizing classical designs and traditional materials, including furniture and fabrics”. Applications must feature a portfolio and accompanying portfolio statement, a statement of your career goals, and a letter of recommendation.

IFDA Student Membership Scholarship

Deadline: March 31, 2022 Amount: $2,000 This design scholarship is open to students majoring in interior design or a related design/furnishing program, with extra consideration given to students who have volunteered in their community and shown leadership potential. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a current IFDA Professional Member, an essay, and two to three examples of design work.

Joel Polsky Academic Achievement Award

Deadline: Spring 2021 Amount: Up to $5,000 This design scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate students. Applicants must submit a research or thesis project that deals with wellness and design. Entries will be judged on the quality of content, breadth of material, comprehensive coverage of topic, innovative subject matter, bibliography, and references.

Kansas City IFMA Scholarship

Deadline: March 31, 2022 Amount: $3,000 to $10,000 Open to U.S. and international undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a design-oriented degree (including interior design, graphic design, lighting design, industrial design, theater design, exhibit design, etc.). Art Scholarships: Finding What Is Right For You

RCA scholarships

The RCA is committed to celebrating diversity, eliminating discrimination and promoting equality of opportunity to all.

Our scholarship programme is growing, with over 400 financial awards available for the 2024/25 academic year. These awards support students with financial needs and those from under-represented groups, including students with disabilities and students with refugee and asylum seeker status.

How can I get a scholarship to study at the RCA?

There are two routes to obtaining a scholarship to study at the RCA -

• Academic merit
• Financial need or being part of an under-represented group in higher education

Scholarship applications for Round 1 and 2 offer holders for MA, MFA, MDes, MRes, MArch, MEd and MPhil programmes have now closed, and we are unable to accept late applications.

For Round 3 offer holders, a limited number of academic merit scholarships are still available. If you meet the eligibility criteria you will be considered for these as part of your Round 3 application -

What sorts of scholarships are available for study at the RCA?

Different types of scholarships include:

• Full fee payment plus living costs
• Full fee payment
• Partial fee payment
• Contributions to living costs

Most scholarships are for UK (Home) students, though international scholarships are also available.

How can I prepare for my scholarship application?

Round 1 and 2 offer holders for MA, MFA, MDes, MRes, MArch, MEd and MPhil programmes were invited in April to answer the following scholarship application questions:

Section 1: Priority eligibility 

• Have you received means-tested student funding or scholarship support in another higher education institution?  Evidence could include your Student Finance or scholarship confirmation.
• Have you received any means-tested government benefits in the last five years?  Evidence could include confirmation of benefits payments, a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions, or a similar government document.
• Have you experienced unavoidable financial hardship?  Evidence could include bankruptcy paperwork, bank or credit card statements or credit/loan agreements (Note: there is also flexibility here for applicants from outside the UK to provide evidence related to their home country's economic and political climate).ote
• Do you have a disability or chronic health condition that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to do daily activities? Evidence could include a medical or diagnostic report or another official document that explains the nature of your disability or health condition.
• Do you currently have or have you ever had refugee or asylum status? Evidence could include a copy of your Application Registration Card (ARC) or permission to stay documentation.
• Do you consider yourself care experienced?  Evidence could include social care or local authority documentation.
• Do you have primary caring responsibilities for a dependent or another family member?  Evidence could include a Child Benefit Letter, Tax Credits, or another official document that evidences your situation.
• Do you consider this a career change, or are you returning to work after a career break / parental leave?  Evidence could include a CV, resignation letter, reference or another document that evidences your situation.

Please note that if you select 'no' for all of the Eligibility Check criteria, you can still submit a short supporting statement (150 words) outlining why you should be considered for scholarship opportunities despite failing to meet the above criteria.

Section 2: Personal statement questions

• Outline a summary of your background and financial need (150 words)
• Outline what steps you are taking to plan and prepare financially for study at RCA (150 words)
• Outline how you would benefit from a scholarship at RCA in the context of your current circumstances (150 words)
• Outline your future career goals and what you see as the positive outcome of receiving a scholarship beyond your studies at RCA (150 words).

The RCA's definition of disadvantage may help you to compose your answer to the first personal statement question:

• experience of discrimination or disadvantage based on ethnicity or other protected characteristics
• refugee or asylum status
• type of school and education opportunities experienced
• growing up in social housing
• caring responsibilities
• having experience of being in care
• social class
• parental or carer occupational background and educational attainment
• receipt of state benefits or experience of unemployment (either yourself, or parent, or carer)
• lack of access to professional and supportive networks
• receipt of means-tested, state-assisted undergraduate funding.

I do not have the finances to pay the deposit to secure my place, is there any support available?

We are committed to ensuring that financial need is not a barrier to studying at the RCA. Any student unable to secure their place through a deposit can   apply for deposit exemption status .

Other funding opportunities

Scholarships are extremely competitive and limited in number, and meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee that you will receive one. We recommend that you look into external funding options and apply for any other sources of funding available to you.

In the UK, there are hundreds of charitable organisations and educational trusts that can offer financial assistance to students. Being successful in receiving this form of funding requires a combination of luck and attention to detail in the content of your application. Many of our current students have benefited from assistance from external organisations.

Scholarship general terms and conditions

• Scholarships are awarded for a specific programme and entry year and cannot be deferred without consent from the academic programme and scholarships panel.
• Scholarship amounts and restrictions will vary across individual awards.
• No correspondence will be entered into regarding scholarship outcomes, and no appeal is allowed.
• The RCA may terminate the scholarship if: a) your performance assessment fails to meet the standards as outlined in the RCA Regulations b) you fail to comply with any of the terms as set out in the RCA Terms & Conditions and the RCA reasonably considers that you have committed an act that may prejudice or damage the reputation of the RCA.

How to apply

You must have received an offer to study on a full-time, one-year taught masters programme.

All eligible Round 1 and 2 offer holders were invited to complete a general RCA scholarship application in April 2024, asking for more information about you, your circumstances and your goals for the future. We will assess your responses and academic merit when making scholarship decisions. Those with Round 3 offers in place by 30 April who registered an interest in the scholarship will also have an opportunity to apply.

GREAT scholarships may be combined with external funding as long as this does not cover 100% of your tuition fees.

GREAT scholarships may be combined with other RCA scholarships - you do not need to apply directly for individual RCA awards; instead, your scholarship application will be marked against the criteria for all the different scholarships that are available

Successful candidates will be required to represent the RCA and the British Council as an ambassador for the GREAT scheme.

Scholarships.

A scholarship is a gift offered to someone (generally a student) worth money or other support, that does not have to be repaid. It typically covers tuition, books, and other expenses during the time the student is studying at school. Some scholarships not only offer monetary aid but also funding for living and travel expenses as well. Scholarships are awarded based on merit or financial need. 

Merit Scholarships

Merit scholarships are given to students who meet certain criteria set out by the scholarship program; usually, the criteria are based on academic performance or some other form of achievement. Merit scholarships can be awarded based on grades, test scores, leadership, athletic ability, or community service.

Financial need is typically determined by the student’s family income and assets. Financial need is calculated by subtracting an applicant’s estimated expenses for tuition, room and board, supplies, books, and miscellaneous expenses from the applicant’s expected family contribution (EFC) (which is determined by calculating the total income of both parents and subtracting certain allowances).

The scholarships featured below are offered exclusively on The Art Career Project. With these scholarships and others like them, you can greatly reduce the cost of your degree.

A scholarship is a type of financial aid that is awarded to an individual on the basis of ability, achievement, or merit. It is usually given without requiring repayment. In the United States, there are more than 20 million Americans who borrow money to pay for college. However, there are scholarships available for artists and creative professionals with exceptional talents in certain fields such as visual arts, music, and dance. To earn a scholarship for art, you should apply to as many programs as you can that award scholarships to top-performing artists and creative students. There are also many scholarships available for minorities, women, and religious groups.

Is art school expensive? – Yes, it can be! The cost of higher education has reached an all-time high. Education costs are rising every year, putting pressure on parents, students, and anyone who is interested in pursuing a higher education degree at the collegiate level. Thousands of students enroll in college with hopes of improving their lives and finding better jobs. Many of them attend schools that are at the top of the list in terms of cost. Art schools are no exception to this rule. But, there are many ways to reduce the cost associated with an art degree.

A scholarship is an award of financial aid available to a student on the basis of academic merit, need, or talent, that does not have to be repaid. There are many different types of scholarships: some awards for academic achievement, others based on membership in certain organizations, or leadership ability. Postgraduate research in the School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art is internationally renowned, interdisciplinary and publicly engaged. Our research creates, embodies and responds to new registers of contemporary art and culture, whilst rearticulating processes and practices associated with established artistic media.  

We are an intellectually vibrant, ambitious and supportive community where research produced by staff and students – both individually and collectively – is disseminated nationally and internationally. Collaboration, experimentation and outward facing distributive actions are central to this; we understand our research to constitute cultural impact within and beyond the University. We lead scholarly inquiry into artistic practice in relation to the full range of academic disciplines and professional contexts available within one of the world’s leading research universities.  

Our MPhil and PhD candidates are supported by bespoke supervisory arrangements made across the University of Edinburgh and supported by training run by the Institute of Academic Development. Our membership of the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities allows us to arrange cross-institutional supervision with our partners in the consortium, ensuring expert supervision and guidance for interdisciplinary projects.

Graduates with a MPhil or PhD in Art have career opportunities as academics concentrating on teaching and research, or research-only roles. They are also equipped for research and other roles within the industry, depending on the focus of their research, and how effectively they have taken advantage of the several non-academic links offered by the University with non-academic institutions, such as galleries, museums, and private companies. 

How to apply and entry requirements

We operate a gathered field approach to PhD/MPhil applications, followed by an interview process for shortlisted applications.

Preparing your application

Common to all research programmes are a set of research aims, a research context, a research process and a research product/outcome. The research proposal should include reference to all of these elements. All applicants for postgraduate research programmes must submit a research proposal.

Portfolios or writing samples are also required for some research degrees.

Are Taylor Swift concerts still safe after terrorist threat? Experts explain why stadiums are still viewed as ‘soft targets’

“The soft targets are those regions that haven’t been through security, but are still prone to a lot of density,” Northeastern University expert Carey Rappaport says.

Authorities in Austria say they’ve subverted a planned terrorist attack targeting several of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts in Vienna, shows that would have drawn as many as 200,000 concertgoers to three stadiums.

Despite advances in stadium security in recent years, concert venues are considered “ soft targets ” for terrorist attacks because thousands of people gather in close quarters before passing through security checkpoints or metal detectors, says Carey Rappaport , a Northeastern distinguished professor who helps lead three government-funded security research centers at the university.

“The soft targets are those regions that haven’t been through security, but are still prone to a lot of density,” Rappaport says. “Think of it as ‘high yield’ for the bad guys.” 

The primary suspect in Vienna is a 19-year-old man who officials say was “radicalized” online, swearing an oath of allegiance to the Islamic State, the New York Times reports . Authorities searched the man’s home, where they discovered “explosives, timers, machetes and knives.” The man reportedly confessed to a plot in which he was planning to kill himself and a large number of other people.

Authorities say another suspect is a 17-year-old who recently started a job at Ernst Happel Stadium as an events service provider. Authorities also questioned a 15-year-old boy who helped corroborate some of the details in the main suspect’s confession, according to the New York Times.

Both suspects were known to police.

The line between soft and hard targets is, Rappaport notes, a little blurred. 

When it comes to concert halls, stadiums and airports, once you pass through metal detectors and are admitted into the venue, you enter an area typically considered a hard target, Rappaport says. But throngs of people in a line waiting to enter a stadium or go through the security — that site can be vulnerable to attacks. 

And it’s those “thousands of people” outside the Swift concert who the suspect is said to have been targeting . 

“Those people waiting in line are packed in tightly, it’s very dense, and you could do a lot of damage with people gathered so closely together,” he says. “It’s a fantastically challenging problem.”

“You can have perfect security if you’re willing to be intrusive, but, of course, that’s unreasonable,” Rappaport adds. “You can use video surveillance for forensic after-the-fact analysis, but video doesn’t usually help us prevent certain traumatic activities from occurring. And the problem is, it’s hard to know what’s innocent and what’s malicious.”

Advanced metal detectors and so-called millimeter-wave radar scanners have become mainstay at most large concert venues, Rappaport says. But oftentimes there is a lack of security personnel to thoroughly check an attendee every time the metal detector alarm goes off. 

The more “low-tech” surveillance methods — human intel, intercepted communications — are “still the gold standard” when it comes to keeping people safe, Rappaport says. 

But the nature of the threats evolve, and another threat facing stadiums today is the possibility of drone attacks.

“One of the issues with stadiums is they tend to be open air, or exposed to the sky,” Rappaport says. “The track and field stadium at the Paris Olympics, for example, is open to the sky.”

All in all, improvements in concert security — and Swift’s is considered the best in the world — have made attending shows an overall safe experience.  

“It’s taken much more seriously, usually, than many of these indoor concert halls, like Symphony Hall in Boston, or an opera house,” Rappaport says. “It seems to me that Foxborough Stadium is much more secure than those venues, but it is outdoor. So one needs to have consideration for drone attacks.”

This is not the first time a music venue has been the target of a terrorist attack. In 2015, terrorists set off bombs across Paris in a coordinated terror attack , targeting many locations including a concert hall and soccer stadium. 

Two years later in 2017, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England . Later that year, a gunman killed 58 people and wounded over 500 at a concert in Las Vegas in one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. 

An attack at a concert hall in Moscow in March resulted in the deaths of more than 133 people, and injuries to over 100 others. Islamic State in Khorasan Province, a regional branch of the Islamic State — ISIS-K — claimed responsibility for the attack. 

This history makes officials prone to taking threats like the one in Vienna seriously, says Andrew Mall, associate professor of music at Northeastern . 

“Every time there’s a major gathering, law enforcement is on high alert,” Mall says. “There’s been so much made about the impact of the Eras Tour [and] the size of the crowds. I can see that being an attractive target to people who are willing to put others’ lives at risk.

“Organizers and promoters are aware that especially with very large events with people who attract attention from a huge variety of different constituencies, that this is always a standing possibility.”

The Eras Tour not only brings in hundreds of thousands of attendees to a show, but to the city where it’s happening. Fans from the United States have been traveling overseas to attend the European shows , taking advantage of lower ticket costs.

While police were able to uncover the alleged plot before it happened, Mall says the shows were likely canceled out of “an abundance of caution” as officials work on the investigation and ensure there’s not an ongoing or continuing threat. Many events like these have insurance policies that allow them to cancel under situations like this with minimal financial risk.
