Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

• Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
• Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
• Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
• Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. It moves you from a one-dimensional indistinguishable candidate to someone with drive, interest, and nuance.

Here, we have 5 high quality   Personal Statement essay examples  from my students over the years. Great Common App Personal Statements tend to give a glimpse into each student’s life, thought processes, growth, and maturity.

Another trend that you may notice with these essay examples is that they’re not entirely CAREER or ACADEMIC based. It depends on the vibe you’re going for, but the general rule of thumb is to think about these essays from the perspective of the admissions officer.

In other words, it’s NOT as simple as “showing off your personality” in personal statement. You might hear this or read this somewhere, but, seriously, don’t listen to it. Your personality will not get you into a top school (unless you’re trying to hustle your way into a party when you’re not on the guest list, then that’s different.)

Think about it rationally: An admissions officer’s JOB is to assemble a cohort of great students into his/her university. Upon reading each application, an admissions professional is thinking: “How will this student contribute to our school? What will this person bring to the table?”

So, your personal statement needs to help answer that question.

I have always been immersed in the world of business. From watching my uncles buy an ownership stake in a multi-million dollar excavation company to store tours with my father, a highly regarded district manager for Dollerama. I am surrounded by inspiration from my family and the people around me. It is now my turn to advance to university and continue a family legacy of business.

Immediately following high school I had an idea that I wanted to progress into business but was to immature to turn my dreams into a reality. Although inexperienced and under qualified I applied for a management level position at Frito Lay Canada. During the final part of the interview I was asked why I should be hired. I replied “ I know I’m young and under qualified, but I also know that I can do this job and I’m just asking you to give me the opportunity to prove it to you.” I am now one of the youngest full time sales representatives in Canada. I have sold a variety of over 150 products in more than 50 cities and towns throughout Saskatchewan. I have experience in areas such as short term sales forecasting, marketing, inventory and auditing procedures as well as the ordering and sales of product, all of these aspects while creating and maintaining relationships with customers. Over the last year and a half I have had the unique opportunity to both mentally and socially mature in an innovative and expanding market. I now strongly believe the business world is where I belong. I know that with the skills I have acquired as well as the ones I will obtain through attendance of this prestigious school will propel me to the top of the business ladder, ultimately accomplishing my goal of leading a successful business.

What really sets me apart is more than just high quality business experience. I bring an honest, hard working character along with a unique and friendly personality. I am quick learning, eager to accomplish and know that I will make a difference. These traits combined with the hunger for knowledge and the passion for business make me a great choice to help represent the student body at HKUST.

With attendance of HKUST I will be able to blossom and shine in an environment filled with some of the worlds top business prospects. I am overjoyed to be able to continue my education, as I look forward to continuing a family tradition of excellence in business.

Well, I have limited experience in this area like yourself. I will provide what I have learned scanning threads on these forums and elsewhere.

It's rough right out of the gate. Just throwing it out there that your uncle is some kind of business big shot is not a good idea IMHO. I wreaks of self-importance and arrogance. This is the silver-bullet of death for any SoP. Plus, it's an anecdotal start, which most people advise against. And, it's not even one that demonstrates how you are a strong candidate for the program. What did you learn through these experiences?

Same thing for your achievement as a sales rep. You drop in there like it speaks for itself - that you have cred. Tell them what you learned. Don't get me wrong, I think that your experience at Frito-Lay is a really strong selling point for you as a candidate. Don't tell them what you did. Tell them what's in your repertoire, what's in your bag, what skills you have and how you acquired them. More importantly, tell them how they make you equipped to do what you want to do in grad school.

I agree with the above poster; there's not enough information about how your family inspired you to continue, just that they were inspiring because they are successful business people. Although I'm not familiar with your school's requirements, the paragraph about your personal qualities is a little...odd. If it's not part of the requirements for applying, I'd leave that part out.

In addition, grammatically speaking, you've got quite a few run-on sentences that could use some commas, at the very least, the second sentence is actually a fragment, and there are some awkward phrasings throughout.

In this statement I plan like to introduce myself and express why I would like to apply for the Business Administration master degree program at Southern States University and what I have in mind for my future.

I earned my Bachelor’s in Business Administration at Istanbul Bilgi University. Istanbul Bilgi University is part of the Laureate international network and is one of the biggest and most prestigious universities in Istanbul/Turkey. My undergraduate education has developed my skills within business administration but I strongly believe continuing my studies at Southern States University will positively impact my future career.

My education at Bilgi University started in September 2011. Throughout my university life I have stayed active on campus, joining student clubs and networking at school events. In addition to this I have worked every summer to define my interests and decide about my future career. My first year at Bilgi University was dedicated to learning English. Following that, two years later I went to an extension program at the University of California, Irvine in order to further improve my English language skills. This was my first experience away from home and while I was nervous at first being on my own pushed me to become reliant on my own language skills. At the end of 2013, I worked in the CRM department as a full-time customer representative at Istanbul Bilgi University. This job really aided me in my human relations and crisis management skills. In my third year at Bilgi I worked as a human resources intern for Demsa Group Company, which distributes luxury brands such as Michael Kors, Gucci and Alexander McQueen in Turkey. My work at Demsa taught me inter-corporate relations, I was able to meet people from different cultures and this expanded my perspectives. All these experiences and the undergraduate courses I took at Bilgi University have broadened my horizons and helped me my passion about communication. After my graduation in August 2016, I applied for the Google Summer School in Turkey to learn Google Adwords and search engine optimization. I got my certifications in August 2016. I believe this was a big factor in my getting hired at Muratbey Gıda in Turkey, where I still work now as a business development and communications assistant. Working at this international company that has made revolutions in cheese production with its unique products, systems and patented production technologies globally has been very inspiring. Muratbey has taught me how to combine my educational background and my personal abilities to create value for the company.

One of my favorite memories at Bilgi University involves the day I volunteered for a social responsibility project titled ‘Time for Children’. The purpose of this program is to have children gain a better understanding of their peers and includes children in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades. I helped design the activities and directed children to play. This task improved my problem-solving abilities and taught me how prepare a business plan. With these abilities, I entered entrepreneurship contests with my projects and met with creative people, who love to spend time to find what people need and how can fix any existing problem like I do. At the beginning of my third semester at Bilgi I started a student club titled ‘Bilgili Liderler Club’ with my nine friends. I was responsible for the event department. I managed twelve events in a year such as carrier and branding meeting, entrepreneurship chat, office visit, meeting with Microsoft. Also, I prepared a party as a social responsibility project to get fund for autistic children in Christmas. I managed all communication process of the club and events from start to end. It improved me on management and human relations.

I am a self-starter, self-confident, hardworking and distinguished person through my education and very active in my social life as well with sports, excursions and other activities. I played volleyball and tennis in high school and realized during this time that sports take a great part in developing team spirit and human relations. These are two very important factors required to be successful in business. I do not think that I would encounter difficulties in foreign environments since I have a personal constitution focused on solutions. I am able to overcome difficulties easily with the help of my good human relations, my high convincing ability and my adaptability.

To achieve my career goals, I need to learn much more about corporate management and management techniques on an international level. A Master’s Degree will provide me with theoretical understanding, in depth idea of practical approaches in aiding managerial decision-making and research skills to enable me to develop an expertise in the core areas of business strategies and global corporate business operations. Master of Business Administration is ideally suited for my career plans and will be golden opportunity to help me to reach them. I believe that my undergraduate study at Istanbul Bilgi University and my proposed postgraduate study at Southern States University will complement each other perfectly for my future prospects. I also believe that the curriculum offered at Southern States University’s MBA program will not only help me to achieve my goals but also will help me to understand the world more than anything else. As Abraham Lincoln once said: “I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.” I understand that one should do everything he has to do and be prepared in order to reach his aims no matter how many times he fails achieving his objectives. That is why I will keep trying until I meet my goals. I do not want to limit myself within the borders of my country or any other countries, and I want to seize every opportunity I have. Therefore, I not only want to study in USA, but I also hope to work there for about one year after graduation to experience its business environment. In this way, Southern States University would not only provide me with the academic background for launching my career, but also act as the gateway or steppingstone into the next phase of my profession.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that road to success in business life will appear vividly in my mind after attending to seminars and lectures of MBA at Southern States University. The fact that the courses I will take in your program will support my personal development and enlighten my career at the business world, sprinkles seeds of enthusiasm in me.

As the deadline to write a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for your dream university’s application is approaching fast, we at IBA Today are here to help you understand SOP and assist you to write it most effectively.

What is a Statement of Purpose?

It is a concise introduction about who you are to the admissions committee, in the form of an essay. It essentially discusses your reasons for applying in the program that you have chosen to study and how will you use the learned skills from the program for your future career. Ideally, you sell yourself to the admissions committee to explain why you belong in your chosen field of study, at that university.

This is the perfect chance for you to talk about your ideas, plans, achievements, abilities, qualities, goals, etc. Think of what sets you apart from others and write an honest, well-structured, and convincing SOP and you are one step closer to achieving your dreams.

Breakdown of how you should write a Statement of Purpose

Bear in mind, that no Statement of Purpose follows a pre-defined format. It is a subjective essay of every individual’s own skills and achievements; hence, a basic style of essay writing follows; Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. There is no limit to how many paragraphs you include in the body if your entire essay stays within the word limit defined in the instructions provided to you.

First Step:

• Choose the first priority program you wish to apply for as it the most essential part of driving the entire essay for you.
• Brainstorm the idea of why you are applying for that program.
• List down your personal and work experiences that define who you are and played a part in motivating you to pursue your higher studies in the said field.
• Think of why you are applying to a particular university. Think about in terms of the learning experience, faculty opportunities that the university will provide you, which will help you when you graduate.
• Whatever you tell about yourself, make sure that it aligns with your interests in your chosen field of study.

Second Step:

In this step, you choose points from the list that you wish to include in your SOP

• This is where you breakdown all your points in sections of introduction, body, and paragraph.
• Choose the point you want to start by making sure that it explains clearly why you want to achieve your dreams and what made you dream of it in the first place.

Moreover, for the body section you could include points such as:

• Any social work, and describe how it affected your life and how it motivates you to achieve your dreams. How will you apply what you learned from that experience?
• Participation in extracurricular activities or achievements in sports .
• Oratory skills. Mention your participation in different international and local forums.
• Art or Music skills. Mention any achievements or accomplishments in this regard.
• Talk about any business ideas that you have and would want to achieve through your studies in your chosen program.
• Some kind of personal experience (it could be any internship experience) that resonates with your career. Therefore, show how you are different from the others .
• How have your past academic choices helped you in your career goals?
• Additionally, include small but memorable life stories as aspects of your personality to create a bigger picture of your personality as a whole .

Third Step:

For the first two steps, you need not worry about your word limit as that is your workspace. But in this step, you need to start writing with the word limit in mind so your essay starts taking form.

• This is where you use good paragraphing techniques and combine all your sections coherently. Easier said than done, so here is a method that will make it easier for you.

Ideally, your paragraph needs to have three things: point, example, and explanation.

Point: Start your paragraph by making a point such as define an interpersonal skill.

Example: Give an instance of where you used that skill.

Explanation: And then explain how it helped you in your chosen field of study.

• This trick will automatically reduce the length of your paragraph down to a maximum of 5 to 6 lines .
• Use an appropriate level of vocabulary and correct grammar. Use Grammarly to keep your grammar in check.

Final Step:

Before you prepare to hit the submit button make sure you do the following at all costs

• PROOFREAD yourself and have an experienced person to read it for you as well. (Don’t take this step lightly. You will be surprised how many changes will be required in your final draft after this)
• Read it aloud to yourself. Listening to what you have written helps you understand if it is making sense.

International business management personal statement example 1.

"Look at the labels on the clothes you are wearing." My sociology teacher started by allowing us to appreciate the work that went into producing our clothes, emphasising the journey each item underwent before arriving in that classroom.

Studying globalisation as part of Sociology has provided me with an awareness of the challenges and demands of a global business. Living in the Philippines, Northern Ireland and England fuelled my passion for other cultures and languages. Both factors contributed to my interest in the business sector and becoming the Marketing Director of a Young Enterprise company cemented my decision in studying International Business at university.

My role as Marketing Director was challenging, as it required me to form strategies that captured our target market and increased sales. I learnt that the skill to manage people efficiently is key to being productive in any business; I had to prioritise and delegate tasks to other team members. By liaising with manufacturers and suppliers, I learned how to conduct business transactions effectively as carrying out smooth transactions encourages repeat-business in the long run. Delivering presentations during two rounds of the Young Enterprise competition boosted my confidence in public speaking. Our company won best presentation at the area and county finals, as well as an award for a short advertisement, which I planned, filmed and edited.

I have been working in Superdry for nearly a year, initially part-time as a student, where I experience how an international retailer operates both front and back of house. I built good working relationships with my colleagues and am able to relate to customers. This summer I became the youngest finalist, out of one hundred and fifty applicants, to become a student event brand ambassador for Superdry. I was invited to their flagship store for an interview to talk about my proposed marketing campaign; I was highly commended for my presentation. I am now involved with the organising and promoting of the Superdry Reading student event.

I am fluent in English and Tagalog, I study Spanish and intend to learn Mandarin; increasing globalisation means the ability to communicate with and relate to foreign customers is important. As a keen traveller, I notice how transnational corporations alter their products to compliment the culture of the host country, for example in India all McDonald's restaurants are certified halal. The sales and marketing strategies used are also specific to the country's social needs; I saw this last summer when I was fortunate enough to work-shadow a senior sales manager at da Land in the Philippines.

In my free time I enjoy music; I attained a grade 8 in singing and a grade 4 in piano. I taught myself how to play the ukulele and during sixth form I joined a ukulele orchestra. In my gap year I plan to teach English at a primary school in China. I hope to discover more about the Chinese culture whilst developing my creativity as I organise educational activities for the students. My dynamic personality and good work ethic makes me suitable for a constantly evolving business world and in studying International Business I will gain the necessary skills to analyse and excel in these changing conditions.

I look forward to the opportunity to study abroad as part of my degree at university; I am particularly eager to expand my knowledge in the areas of Marketing, Finance and Business Sustainability as I find these areas fascinating. I understand the importance of business responsibilities, and aspire to become part of an organisation that puts corporate social responsibility at the heart of their operations.

Im quite proud of my personal statement actually, in total, it took me about a week to put finish after 8 drafts and numerous breakdowns! But since I am on my gap year, I started writing this late september with the help of my friend(s) who have already moved to University and my year 13 UCAS mentor.
