PhD Funding in Australia

Written by Maree Perkins

With plenty of funding options, golden beaches, and a generous post-study visa, it’s easy to see why Australia is a popular destination to complete a PhD .

Australian PhD funding takes the form of government and university scholarships, and there are plenty for you to get your hands on.

This guide highlights some of the funding options for your PhD in Australia, as well as fees, living costs and other expenses.

On this page

Australia phd funding – what you need to know first.

Australia is renowned for its world class education. With 20 universities in the top 300 according to the 2024 Times Higher Education Rankings , you’re in good hands. Australia is popular because of its English-speaking programmes, amazing natural backdrop and unique study opportunities (casual marine biology dive in the Great Barrier Reef anyone?) But it is a more expensive option (both in terms of fees and living costs). Here are a few things to keep in mind when doing your research:

  • Australia loves international students! There are almost half a million students from 192 countries there. And they’ve simplified their visa process so there’s only one option!
  • Doctoral fees are higher for international students because Australian students enjoy a state subsidy.
  • There are lots of scholarships available for international students, from universities and the government, so research all your options.

Take a look at our PhD study in Australia guide , if you haven’t already. This gives an overview of everything to take into account when considering studying in Australia – not just the funding.

The cost of a PhD in Australia

Studying a PhD in Australia can be a little bit more expensive than other places. But you get what you pay for: world-class research centres, internationally ranked universities and all the sun, sea and sand your heart could desire! You can also work up to 40 hours over a two week period, and unlimited hours during holiday periods. So, let’s look at what this sun-soaked destination is actually going to cost you.

As an international student in Australia you'll pay fees at a higher rate. The Australian government estimates that typical international PhD fees are between AUD $20,000-50,000 (USD $12,740-31,850) per year. This is what you can expect to pay if your project doesn’t have funding attached or you’re proposing your own topic.

But, there's a good chance that you won't pay the full fees because of the funding on offer. Many Australian PhDs will also be advertised as pre-funded projects, especially for Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine (STEM) topics.

Living costs

There is a high standard of living in Australia, but with that comes a higher than average cost of living. According to Numbeo , the cost of living in Australia is (on average) 5.17% higher than in United States. This doesn’t include rent which is on average cheaper. It will also depend on where in Australia you want to live and the sort of lifestyle you want to have.

The Australian Government estimates that students will need at least AUD $24,505 (USD $15,610) for each year of their course. This is the amount of money you will need to have available to apply for a student visa .

See our guide to living in Australia during a PhD for more advice.

Other expenses

As an international student, you (and anyone you bring with you) will need health insurance to cover the duration of your stay. There are various providers you can choose from, but you need to make sure they meet the standards set by Australia's Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) guidelines .

There are student offers so shop around for the best deal. A quick quote from ahm OSHC for a single person for a year came back with AUD $570 (USD $365). Your university can help you decide which insurance policy is best for you.

You’ll also need to apply for a visa. Australia now only offers one visa for international students: the Student Visa (subclass 500). The standard cost is AUD $710 (USD $450). You may have to pay extra if you’re bringing people with you, but you can use the Australian Government searchable visa cost database to help.

Government funding

You can use the Australian Government’s scholarships search tool to find out what scholarships you may be eligible for. Here are a couple of the main ones to consider as an international student:

Australia Awards

The aim of the Australia Awards is to boost opportunities for students from partner countries to study, research and develop professionally in Australia. The Awards combine scholarships from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT), the Department of Education and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

Destination Australia

The Destination Australia Program (DAP) is an Australian Government program valued at up to AUD $15,000 (USD $10,300) per student, per year. As a PhD student, you can access these scholarships for up to four years.

Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships

The Research Training Program at the Department of Education is a pool of funding that can help offset your tuition fees, act as a stipend to help with living costs, or be an allowance to help with costs such as relocation, publications and health cover. Applications for these scholarships are made directly to a participating university .

Coming from the US

The good news is that if you’re a US student, you can usually bring your US Financial Aid with you. There are also some international organisations and charities that offer US scholarships for international study , but you’ll need to apply for them in your home country.

Coming from the UK

To encourage UK students to study in Australia, as well as government and university funding options, there is also the The Northcote Postgraduate Scholarship which is awarded by the Northcote Trust, and administered on the Trust's behalf by the Britain-Australia Society.

Institute and university scholarships

A lot of Australian universities offer scholarships based on academic performance. It’s worth checking with the admissions team or international office at your university before applying to see what you might be eligible for.

You could also go directly to the international postgraduate scholarship section on your university’s website. We’ve pulled the links of some of the top universities in Australia so you can easily browse their PhD scholarships:

There may also be specific funding from institutes who have partnerships with certain member universities. The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE), for example, has a Postgraduate Research Award of AUD$9,000 (USD $5,730) per year. The Award also provides travel and accommodation support for conferences and field work.

Do you get paid to do a PhD?

Study tips Published 17 Jun, 2022  ·  4-minute read

A PhD is a time-consuming gig. Planning, research and writing can easily fill the hours of your typical 9-5 job. But do PhD students get paid?

Yes and no.

Yes, you can secure a scholarship that provides a living stipend, which means you’ll receive a fortnightly allowance. No, it isn’t typically as much as you could expect from an entry-level, full-time salary straight out of your undergrad studies – but for many people, it is tax free. You can also supplement the living stipend with a top-up scholarship if you’re eligible.

There are a variety of ways to make a PhD work for you financially. Scholarships are the key component to this and can cover both tuition and living costs.

Let’s explore how you can secure a scholarship to help with day-to-day living expenses such as food, accommodation and bills while you complete your PhD.

How can you get paid to do a PhD?

There are 2 key types of scholarships you need to consider when undertaking your PhD:

  • living stipend
  • tuition scholarship

At UQ, the main scholarship program is called Graduate School Scholarships (UQGSS) – it covers the cost of your PhD tuition fees and provides a living stipend to cover the cost of living expenses while you carry out your PhD.

Another major program of scholarships at UQ are earmarked scholarships, which include both a living stipend and a tuition scholarship. Whether you’re eligible for this type of scholarship depends on the type of PhD you undertake – find out more about earmarked scholarships .

Living stipend

The UQGSS living stipend and tuition scholarship will help you cover cost-of-living expenses while you carry out your PhD. This scholarship:

  • is open to both domestic and international postgraduate research students
  • is inclusive of all study areas
  • covers a 3.5-year period , with the possibility of an extension
  • is only available to full-time students (with the exception of part-time students with special circumstances )
  • provides  $35,000 a year (tax free) living stipend, paid in fortnightly instalments
  • covers tuition fees.

However, while the UQGSS is the most widely used scholarship at UQ for PhD students, there are many types of living stipend scholarships – each with its own terms and conditions.

Search all living stipend scholarships for PhD students

At UQ, you will be asked if you would like to be considered for a living stipend scholarship when you apply for your PhD. UQ scholarships are awarded based on:

  • academic performance
  • evidence of research capability
  • the quality of your research project
  • the quality of your proposed research environment and advisory team.

Top-up scholarship

At UQ, a ‘top-up scholarship’ can provide you with additional funds during your PhD, on top of your living stipend scholarship. There are a variety of top-up scholarships you can apply for through UQ, many of which are focused on specific study areas (and even specific PhD topics ) or targeted at particular groups of people (e.g. international students or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students). Some of these offer travel and/or accommodation allowances on top of the funds provided for general living expenses during studies – a particularly useful addition for PhD students who wish to attend industry conferences or workshops to further their professional development.

Top-up scholarships can:

  • only be used in conjunction with a living stipend (as long as they don’t exceed 75% of the stipend amount)
  • offer an additional $5,000 – approximately $21,000 a year on top of your living stipend.

Browse postgraduate research top-up scholarships

Top-up scholarships can be very competitive to secure, so it's essential to have a backup financial plan should you apply and not be accepted.

How much funding do you receive for a PhD?

Let’s look at a few of UQ’s top-up scholarships in conjunction with the standard Research Training Program living stipend amount, to see just how much you could be getting paid to do your PhD.

Top-up scholarship Scholarship value per annum* + Standard living stipend ($35,000) per annum
Centre for Health System Reform and Integration PhD Top-Up Scholarship $10,000 $45,000
PhD Economics Top-Up Scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student $14,000 $49,000

CRC TiME Top-Up Scholarship

$10,000 $45,000

*All values are approximate and based on 2024 scholarships. Information is subject to change. See the scholarships website for the most accurate and up-to-date figures.

Is it enough?

When approaching a PhD, it’s important to consider your financial situation realistically. Asking ‘do you get paid for a PhD?’ doesn’t quite cover all the logistics. Here are a few more questions to help you assess the situation:

  • Can I live on $35,000 a year, or approximately $673 a week?
  • Do I have the time to supplement my living stipend with casual or part-time work ? Will this extra commitment impact my studies?
  • Will undertaking casual or part-time work breach the conditions of my scholarship?
  • Am I eligible for any scholarships (top-up or other bursaries) beyond the living stipend?
  • Is it worth applying to existing research projects, undertaking research in particular study areas or with certain supporting organisations, so that I may have a better chance of securing an available scholarship? Do these PhD projects/topics align with my interests enough to study for 3-4 years?
  • Am I eligible for a tuition scholarship to cover tuition costs ?
  • What’s more important to me – completing my PhD in 3-4 years full time and budgeting, or completing my PhD in 6-8 years part time while living comfortably?

Don’t forget that you don’t have to make this decision on your own. If you need help finding the right postgraduate research scholarship for you, or would like some advice, you can contact the friendly team at UQ’s Graduate School .

RMIT has two stipend scholarships available. The RTP Stipend Scholarship (RSS) and the RMIT Research Stipend Scholarship (RRSS).

RSS scholarships are funded by the Australian government and RRSS scholarships are funded by RMIT University. When you apply for a research scholarship through one of the University’s rounds, you will automatically be considered for all the scholarships for which you are eligible.

2025 research scholarships

Applications for scholarships commencing in 2025 are now open.

Scholarships are awarded through a highly competitive process. It is therefore important that you make sure you read and understand the advice provided to prospective applicants about ensuring their application is competitive on the ‘how to apply’ page.

All scholarship applicants must provide evidence from an academic member of staff who agrees to supervise your research when submitting an expression of interest.

If you intend to apply for one of these scholarships, it is recommended that you start the application process without delay and submit your expression of interest as soon as possible. There may be strong competition for places in some of the research projects on offer.

Value and duration

In 2025, the RSS and RRSS provide the following benefits to recipients:

  • a stipend of $35,886 per annum pro rata (full-time study). This amount is subject to indexation annually
  • international candidates in receipt of this scholarship are also awarded an RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) or an RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS)
  • all local candidates, Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia are provided with an RTP Fee Offset scholarship. Applicants in receipt of an RTP Fee Offset scholarship are not required to pay tuition fees for the maximum duration of their candidature
  • a relocation allowance for the cost of relocating in order to take up their postgraduate research program. The amount is up to $515 per adult and $255 per child to a maximum of $1,540
  • paid sick, maternity and parenting leave (within the limits of the Scholarship Terms and Conditions).

The standard duration of a research doctoral scholarship is three and a half years full-time.

The duration of a research Masters scholarship is two years full-time, with no additional extension available.

The duration of an RSS or RRSS will be reduced by any periods of study undertaken towards a research degree at the same level, prior to the commencement of the RMIT research program.

Eligibility

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a competitive selection process that ranks applicants according to their academic achievement, research outputs and relevant professional experience.

Priority is given to applicants who:

  • have achieved a high distinction in the final two years of the qualifying program(s). At RMIT, a grade of high distinction represents an academic achievement of 80% or higher
  • may be considered by RMIT as having an equivalent level of academic attainment, taking into account previous study, relevant work experience, research publications and other research experience
  • are able to take receipt of a scholarship for a minimum 12 months duration on a full-time basis (or part-time equivalent) because of prior enrolment in a graduate research program
  • have not already completed a graduate research program at the same or higher course level. For example, Masters by Research applicants should not have already completed a Masters by Research or PhD
  • an applicant must not previously have held an RMIT or  Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship’s payments commencing
  • are or will be enrolled and primarily based at an RMIT Australian campus.

International applicants must meet  English language requirements  by the application closing date to be considered for a scholarship.

Part-time applications from local applicants may be approved if applicants are able to demonstrate exceptional circumstances as specified in the  Research Scholarship Terms and Conditions . Scholarships provided to candidates enrolled on a part-time basis are not tax exempt.

Currently enrolled candidates applying for a scholarship or candidates transferring to RMIT from another institution must have at least 24 months (or part time equivalent) for PhD and 12 months for Masters by research candidature remaining from the commencement of the scholarship.

You will be considered ineligible for a stipend scholarship if:

  • you are applying for or undertaking a Masters by Research and you already hold a Research Doctorate, Research Masters or an equivalent research qualification
  • you are applying for or undertaking a Research Doctorate and you already hold a Research Doctorate or an equivalent research qualification
  • you have previously held a Commonwealth-funded postgraduate research scholarship unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship commencement date, or
  • you are currently receiving another equivalent award, scholarship or research related salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the annual value of the stipend this scholarship provides.

Key dates and how to apply

All scholarship applications must include evidence of contact with the proposed senior supervisor.

UNSW Sydney raises stipends for Higher Degree Research scholarships

UNSW Sydney raises stipends for Higher Degree Research scholarships

UNSW will lift stipends for PhD and other HDR scholarship candidates from 2023, to set the benchmark for living wage stipends in Australia.

UNSW has announced it will raise stipends for all Higher Degree Research (HDR) scholarship candidates in 2023 – and again in 2024 – to help to ease the financial stress they face due to cost-of-living pressures.

All new higher degree research scholarships will be offered at the rate of $35,000 per annum from Term 1 2023.  All current scholarship holders whose stipend is below $35,000 will also receive the increased amount at the same time. The rate will be the second-highest stipend among Group of Eight universities and well above the Department of Education’s standard rate of $29,863 for 2023.

UNSW will further increase the stipend to $37,684 in 2024, which is in line with the current living wage and is expected to be one of, if not the highest, for an Australian university.

UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Attila Brungs said HDRs are not only core to the university research ecosystem, but HDR graduates are fundamental to Australia’s whole innovation system. The re-examination of the stipend level was driven by an urgent economic and moral imperative, along with a desire to support this critical community.

“UNSW acknowledges the rising cost of living, especially in Sydney, places considerable pressure on our HDR candidates,” Prof. Brungs said.

“We want to support our candidates and provide them with the opportunity to devote undistracted time and effort to their research so that they can explore, develop, and master long-term projects – then contribute to driving innovation for the benefit of all Australians.”

HDR students vital for Australia's R&D productivity

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Enterprise Professor Nick Fisk said PhD candidates are an essential but undercompensated part of UNSW’s research firepower.

“HDRs contribute to more than half of our research outputs, but around 57% have second jobs, taking them away from their projects and thus Australia’s R&D productivity. As a nation, we must attract and retain the best and brightest students at all levels, and increasing stipends will enable the University to recruit the highest quality PhD applicants.

“With 2 per cent of Australians now holding a PhD, impoverishing stipend rates can no longer be ignored. Indeed, this has become a major international issue, affecting almost all PhD students according to a recent Nature survey. HDRs in the UK recently lobbied UK Research & Innovation to gain a modest increase in stipends. UNSW has gone further, now setting the benchmark for living wage stipends in Australia.”

PhD candidate Nora Campbell says she is happy that UNSW is recognising the important work that postgraduate researchers do.

“I think the stipend increase will make a huge difference to many people as it will help offset the high cost of living in Sydney.

“Scientific research is such an important export for UNSW and for Australia, so this is a great step forward in helping UNSW's postgraduate researchers continue to put out high-quality research that benefits Australia and the world.”

Increasing the stipend dovetails with the University’s commitment to increasing scholarship and financial support for coursework students. In August,  UNSW announced an expansion of its Gateway Equity Program , increasing the access rate to 25 per cent over the next five years for first-year students from underrepresented schools and backgrounds.

“The social and economic successes of the individual, the community and the country are built on the transformative power of education,” Prof. Brungs said.

“We want to ensure that anyone, from any background, can consider doing an undergraduate or higher degree research at UNSW.”

HDR candidates are predominantly those studying for Doctor of Philosophy degrees, but also those undertaking Professional Doctorate, Master's by Research and Master of Philosophy higher degree research programs.

Co-funding project

Industry scholarships are a package totalling a minimum $50,000pa living stipend for the candidate.

Model Funding support from industry Funding support from Griffith
Model A - co-funded Industry partner's invest $35,000 per year with a $15,000 per year top-up from Griffith, totalling a $50,000 per year living stipend. The minimum investment required from industry is $25,000 per year. However, lesser investment from industry may be approved for co-funding arrangements in certain circumstances such as non-profit organisations to be reviewed case by case.

  • Project proposal
  • Academic transcript(s)
  • Any other information supporting your application

Supervisor endorsement

When you submit your application, an email will be sent to your proposed supervisor for them to complete a supervisor endorsement form. In order to receive an endorsement, you need to have previously communicated with your proposed supervisor, and they must have agreed to supervise you.

How will my application be assessed?

SQA PhD Partnership Scholarship

Applications will be assessed by SQA and CSIRO, based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the proposed project including relevance to quantum technology and alignment to the proposed project by UNSW and CSIRO supervisors.
  • Candidate experience including academic merit, experience in quantum technology and / or any professional experience

What is SQA career development funding (CDF)?

  • SQA PhD Partnership Scholarship students will have access to a pool of SQA career development funds held locally at your university. The approval processes and availability of funds will depend on your university who manage the process.  The intention of this funding is not to replace funding you may already be eligible to receive (e.g., you may already have support for a laptop from your research group), but rather to provide you with opportunities you may not have been able to access without the SQA CDF - such as specialist training.

How many rounds are there per year?

  • We typically hold two scholarship rounds per year – one in April and another in September. You can subscribe to our mailing list to be notified when scholarship rounds open.

How do I know if my research area sufficiently relates to quantum tech?

  • As quantum tech can span various disciplines and areas, the best person to answer this question is your proposed supervisor.

Do I have to come to Australia, or can I do my PhD entirely remotely and apply for a scholarship?

  • As per the requirements of your university candidature (see their degree resolutions for details), you will need to do your PhD largely in Australia. You may be able to be overseas for a period within this or commence offshore for a period of time. If you are an international student, you will need an Australia visa granted before you can enrol.

What are the selection criteria?

  • Details are available above – under ‘How will my application be assessed?’

Is there an IELTS requirement for a scholarship application?

  • There is no SQA specific requirement for IELTS. You will need to adhere to the IELTS requirements of your chosen SQA university however, to be admitted for your PhD. SQA university PhD admission will be required to receive your scholarship, should you be awarded.

Can I start my application form and save it to finish it later?

  • Depending on your browser – it should remember you and let you return to the same spot. However, if you open it up on a different browser or device, it likely won’t remember you, so make sure to keep a copy of anything you worry about losing to be safe.

I’ve accidentally submitted something incorrect on my application – how do I update this?

  • If you submit multiple applications, we will use the latest application you submitted before the deadline in the assessment and selection process. If you are having trouble accessing the form after your first submission (i.e., the link takes you to a thank you for submitting page), if you open the link using a different browser application (e.g. Firefox instead of Chrome) and it should let you access the form anew. Alternatively, you can also email [email protected]  with your updated information.

Can I apply for an SQA Partnership scholarship and another scholarship at the same time?

  • Yes, you can. However, should you be successful for another scholarship it may change your eligibility in terms of SQA scholarship types. For example, should you receive a non-SQA primary stipend (e.g., an RTP) since your application, you would no longer be eligible for an SQA Primary Scholarship, but you still may be eligible for an SQA Supplementary Scholarship.

Can I get a second extension (past 4 years) if my thesis is delayed?

  • In general, no. This is due to most university degree resolutions stating that four years full time (not including extended leave or suspensions of study) is the maximum candidature length. See your university’s degree resolutions for details.

Can I reapply if I am unsuccessful?

  • Yes, you are most welcome to reapply in future rounds, as long as you still fulfil the eligibility criteria.

Can I get feedback on my application?

  • Unfortunately, we cannot provide feedback on your application.

Can I apply if I am a cotutelle students with an SQA university and another university?

  • Yes, you can apply. Should you be successful however, the SQA PhD Scholarship stipend would only cover the period you are in Sydney and based at the SQA university.

I have another question not answered here – who can I ask?
