The online route helps students manage their career goals without the discomfort of a residency stipulation, as the coursework can be built around professional commitments without dislocation.

Online and in-person courses have similar requirements – admission norms, a minimum bachelor’s degree with a higher GPA, a competitive GRE or entrance exam score, and submission of outstanding references and erudite personal essays.

The time and effort you put into developing and conducting primary research is similar. In online courses, students can expect a few on-campus meetings, topic-customized conferences, some practicums, or residencies lasting two days to two weeks.

The online system requires the same time management skills, excellent communication, and meticulous adherence to project deadlines.

The acceptability of a program and its credibility rests with the accreditation awarded to the university. Accreditation indicates that the university’s capabilities and infrastructure have been independently evaluated to ensure Doctoral Degrees fulfill the highest accountability standards.

The stringent standards of online Doctoral Degree coursework, the difficulty level of examinations, and the excellence of research work are of the same caliber as an on-campus course.

Just as the traditional doctoral courses, the online programs require a master’s degree in a related field or a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field, over and above the following standards:

A GPA of 3.0 or better

Impeccably referenced letters of recommendation

Persuasive and purposeful personal statements

Competitive GRE/other exam scores

Some universities may insist on a certain amount of field experience or some years of working experience.

US schools are permitting students to bypass the master’s degree to earn a doctoral degree directly, which is a very welcome opportunity.

For candidates aiming to kickstart a career in academia, locating a PhD program that entertains students with only bachelor’s degrees would be possible. The rigor of coursework is so elevated that many students are awarded a master’s degree on the way to earning a doctorate.

If students earn their master’s degree first, they would have explored their niche topics threadbare and become better acclimatized to the performance expectations and standards of the university.

Students with a master’s degree can also customize their subjects and research work in the university, adding maximum value. It’s always advisable to ensure the new university accepts your master’s credits earned in the first institution.

How do we choose the perfect, most affordable phd programs online?

The choice of the program hinges mainly on the career you wish to pursue. A doctor, pharmacist, occupational therapist, or tenured professor must earn a doctoral degree. On the other hand, we have a slew of high-paying, high-level jobs across economic sectors that do not require a doctoral degree.

Executive management posts, education administrators, healthcare administration, and mental health professionals are positions where a doctorate isn’t necessary.

Generally, the doctoral degree is valuable for candidates desiring to enter teaching and research fields instead of non-doctoral degree options that cover workplace jobs in institutions and businesses.

For example, if you consider the job of a Speech-Language Pathologist who treats communication and speech disorders, the candidate with a master’s degree can earn at least $58,000 annually. The SLP with a doctorate is better placed to grab academic and research positions commanding higher salaries.

The average total expense for an online graduate degree, master’s or doctoral degree, is $12,200 at public schools to $27,800 at nonprofit private schools, according to data released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Notwithstanding the statistical data, the ground reality pegs affordable online doctorate degrees from $15,441 in public schools to $13,188 at private universities.

A silver lining is that many students are not compelled to pay the total cost of their degrees but enjoy either fully funded programs or some form of partial financial assistance in completing the degree.

The duration of a doctoral program depends on the credit hours involved, and these average around 36 to 126 hours of coursework. It follows that the average time taken to complete an online or on-campus degree works out to be three to eight years.

The overall course duration may be further reduced if credits for related coursework are transferred from previous universities.

The duration of the dissertation or capstone project is another factor lengthening the period of the doctoral degree. Some students may experience repeated submissions of their dissertations to secure necessary approval.

In the later stages of the doctoral degree, factors such as workplace commitments for professionals and family obligations could weigh in to delay the graduate degree.

Research-oriented doctoral graduates might hit the brick wall of many degree holders chasing too few jobs in academia and the institutional framework. Only exceptional talent breaks the glass ceiling of top institutional/ Academic positions. On the other hand, the demand for doctorate holders in the applied fields is stronger, especially in applied sciences and technology.

Before investing your time, energy, and resources in a doctorate of your liking, review the professional degrees appearing on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) current listing of fastest-growing occupations. Physical therapists, teachers in the healthcare sector, and lawyers are currently in better demand.

The high-level, highest-paying jobs in governments, companies, and nonprofits with smooth career progression are usually the domain of the doctorate holders.

Indeed, the doctorate holder is at the pinnacle of prowess having notched up an impressive achievement. Luckily, the revolution in online education has opened plenty of opportunities to advance education and career goals if you display the right attitude and determination.

Traditional courses demand full-time participation and are more expensive. In comparison, the online doctoral degree presents convenient options through distance learning; they cost much less than their on-campus counterparts. Besides, the online doctorate is the most feasible way to plan your career goals in coverage, curriculum, and affordability.

The institutions we have listed above are at the top of their league. They enjoy their hard-won reputation as harbingers of better education, offering some of the cheapest online doctoral programs.

An overview of the doctorate degree, why get an online doctorate degree.

Many doctoral candidates have already reached more advanced stages in their career. The online doctorate is a great way to continue in your education while remaining active in your career. Online doctoral degree programs are often tailored to the scheduling needs of working professionals. This means that you may be able to complete your online doctorate while still earning a living. This can help offset your dependence on financial aid options and, ultimately, reduce your student loan debt.

What kinds of online doctoral degree programs are there?

Online doctoral degree programs are offered in a variety of disciplines including business administration, health sciences, computer science, and more. Some doctoral degree programs do not naturally lend themselves to online learning, but for those that do, it may be possible to choose from a variety of affordable online doctorate degrees.

What can you do with a doctoral degree?

Earning a doctorate qualifies you to work at the highest levels in your field including executive leadership business, consultation in public affairs, work as a university professor, or a career spent in research. Depending on your area of concentration, your online doctoral program could allow you to contribute to important economic research, participate in major long-term public health surveys, or provide R&D leadership to a major consumer brand.

What are the admission requirements for an online doctorate degree program?

The admission requirements for online doctoral degree programs are the same as those for a traditional doctorate degree. The bachelor’s degree is typically the basic threshold for entry into a doctoral program. Most reputable online doctoral degree programs will also require a strong academic track record and a minimum undergraduate GPA. You are not required to earn a master’s degree before gaining entry into a doctoral degree program. However, some doctoral programs may recognize these graduate credits. Starting with some credits earned could reduce the time and money you’ll spend on your PhD. In other words, if you already have a master’s degree, you could choose from an array of more affordable online doctorate degree programs.

How much does a doctoral degree cost?

The cost of a doctoral degree is extremely variant. Most online doctoral programs fall on the higher end of the cost spectrum and can range from roughly $30-$40K per year for in-state students to upwards of $60,000 to $100,000 per year for out of state students. That said, the most affordable online doctoral programs actually offer online learning opportunities for as little as $5,000 to $9,000 per year.

Can I get an affordable online doctorate degree?

Yes, you can absolutely get an affordable online doctorate degree. A growing number of highly reputable universities now provide partially or fully online doctoral programs. For many doctoral students, one of the biggest challenges is balancing the enormous commitment of time spent on research and coursework with work, family and home-life demands.

Earning an online doctorate makes it possible to save money on expenses like housing, transportation, and certain campus fees. Online doctoral programs also make it possible to continue working in your field, which means you can complete your degree program while still earning a living. This can ultimately reduce your dependence on student loan debt.

An affordable, quality education from an accredited online doctorate program is within your reach. Our in-depth, comprehensive guide to affordable degree programs will give you even more tips on making a doctorate degree as affordable as possible.

How We Rank the Most Affordable Online PhD Programs

Most Affordable Doctorate Programs - fact

Finding an online Ph.D. program directly related to your profession can be difficult, but it is possible if you ask the correct questions.

Once you’ve reduced your options down to a few key players, you’ll want to take a few more steps to evaluate the program entirely—and the results you can expect. It is best to meet or speak with the program chair and ask five significant questions concerning its accrediting authenticity and the student experience.

  • Are you accredited on a regional or national level? And what is the state of your accreditation?
  • How easy is it to get in touch with the mentors here?
  • What is it like to be an online student at this university?
  • What resources will I have access to as part of this program?
  • Will I be able to get help with my dissertation?

If you have any worries about the accrediting agency’s legality, check to see if it is recognized by one of two authorities: the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the U.S. Department of Education . The latter features a College Navigator service that allows students to check the accreditation of any institution they are thinking about attending.

The cost of tuition for online Ph.D. programs varies. Costs are affected by various factors, including program length, available financial aid, and whether the school is private or public. Doctoral programs typically provide more financial assistance than master’s programs. According to EducationData.org , the average cost of a Ph.D. degree is $114,300. However, you can find a quality program with tuition costs of approximately $400 to $600 per credit hour.

Many institutions provide financial aid to full-time online Ph.D. students, and there are no differences in application, requirements, or qualifications between on-campus and online programs. In general, doctoral students are eligible for student loans, assistantships, and scholarships. Furthermore, many corporations/companies assist their employees who desire to pursue a Ph.D. and help finance students’ tuition and research fees.

Interested students can apply for various scholarships to assist their studies. The six grants listed below are just a few examples of scholarships that might help students avoid debt.

Why Should You Get a Doctorate Degree?

A doctorate degree elevates individuals to expert-level knowledge in any field. You should get a doctorate degree to develop your skills and expand your understanding of a subject or field, preferably a field you are passionate about. Earning this advanced degree can open several career opportunities and can help you reach your career goals.

The academic training you receive from these campus programs will help you to develop critical thinking skills, presentation skills, and communication skills. Also, starting and finishing your dissertation and research will help you to develop project management skills which many employers look for in leadership roles.

Best Doctorate Degree Career Options

The career prospects for doctorate degree holders are quite impressive. With a doctorate degree, individuals not only earn more than those with just undergraduate or master’s degrees, but they also don’t have to start from the entry level and enjoy better career advancements. Going through the dissertation process proves your advanced research and analytical skills.

While many doctorate degree holders pursue a career in academia, some still work in other non-academic fields such as media, consultation, and think tanks. Employers often value doctorate degree holders because they offer unique skills like the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Doctorate Degree Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, doctorate graduates earn a median weekly income of $1,885 . This shows that doctorate programs offer a good remuneration irrespective of the field or discipline. The report shows that employees with a doctorate degree can earn $94,000 per year.

This figure is far higher than what master’s degree holders earn on average. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree earn even less. In the long run, this shows that a doctorate degree is worth the trouble if you want a high annual wage. A doctoral degree is a terminal degree, meaning there is no higher university level.

Can You Attend a Doctorate Degree Program for Free?

Yes, there are some cases where you can attend a doctorate degree program for free. There are some fully funded doctorate degree programs, where graduate research students across different fields have the option to attend without paying anything.

Some are partially funded and this means the students will be required to foot some parts of the tuition rates. The programs often waive tuition and fees and provide students with annual stipends to support their living expenses.

Doctorate Degree vs PhD

  • Ph.D. programs focus more on the theoretical and abstract aspects of their respective fields of study to understand it as a school of thought rather than just a practical application.
  • Usual doctorate programs tend to be more practical in their study and focus on the application of knowledge rather than understanding more abstract perspectives.
  • Ph.D. degrees are often offered in the same fields that have standard doctoral degrees available usually offered in fields such as engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
  • Doctorate programs are made up of advanced coursework, research projects, or thesis work almost strictly for practical application.
  • Ph.D. and Doctorate degrees can often achieve the same ends and should be considered more or less equal in weight.

Guide to Online Doctorate Degrees

Fewer positions requiring this advanced level qualification and reduced competition for such job opportunities among job seekers are some of the reasons behind the few doctoral graduates.

With technological advancements in almost all areas of life, acquiring education, a significantly advanced level of education has become more accessible. Graduate students now do not have to attend physical classes to pursue their dreams of developing and advancing their skills.

You can pursue your doctorate in the comfort of your home or even your office.

There was a 20% growth in students granted doctorate degrees between the 2009/2010 and 2019/2020 academic years, according to NCES. This growth has been attributed in part to online Ph.D. programs and the streamlining of modern universities.

Online Ph.D. programs are a relatively newer idea and online schooling in general has greatly increased access, flexibility, and convenience.

Students typically complete these degrees soon after completing a Master's degree in the same area. As such, and with bachelor's degrees being necessary stepping stones, students can expect their journey from primary school to a Ph.D. to take about nine years, barring any accelerated tracks and failed classes.

Cost of an Online Doctoral Degree Program

When choosing any doctoral degree program, it is crucial to evaluate the costs and salary after attending. Even though online Ph.D. courses may usually be cheaper than on-campus learning, secondary schooling is rarely cheap and not every field will allow you to make back the cost in a reasonable amount of time.

Tuition, materials, technology, transportation, housing, and groceries should all be factors brought into account when deciding whether or where to attend, and in what field you can find the most success and fulfillment.

Below are the annual tuition rates of different institutions as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Institution Type Annual Tuition
Private-For profit institutions $18,200
Private-Not for-profit institutions $37,600
Public institutions $9,400

Choosing an Online Doctoral Degree Program

Since doctoral programs require considerable investments of money and time, it is important to consider every factor before deciding on a school or program. Take some time to consider the marketability, cost, and difficulty of each program and your own interest in the subject. To reach your career and educational goals, do your best research.

Pursuing a Ph.D. online can help working professionals strike a balance between their careers in higher education and their studies. Online Ph.D. in higher education programs typically offer flexible formats with few or no in-person requirements, allowing learners to complete coursework and dissertation tasks where and when it’s most convenient.

Cost also plays a role in choosing the right program and format. An online doctoral program could benefit learners who would otherwise need to commute long distances to and from their school, potentially saving transportation costs. Some schools charge in-state tuition rates to online learners who reside out of state to reduce their cost commitment.

Still, doctoral coursework can be rigorous. Students should consider whether they feel confident in their ability to complete intensive projects and studies without face-to-face guidance and support from instructors and peers.

Many colleges and universities seek institutional accreditation to distinguish themselves as leaders in academic quality, faculty credibility and positive student outcomes. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education recognize several institutional accrediting agencies, including the Higher Learning Commission and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Schools typically approve transfer credits only from other institutionally accredited colleges . Plus, employers and credentialing bodies may not recognize degrees from unaccredited schools.

Programmatic accreditation is reserved for specific programs and departments. A Ph.D. in higher education usually comes through a school’s education department, which may be endorsed by a programmatic accrediting agency. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation commonly accredits departments with higher education doctoral programs.

If you’ve settled on pursuing a distance education, here’s how to narrow down your options.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online Ph.D. in higher education varies among schools, so it’s important to consider your future goals to point you toward the right program.

First, determine whether a Ph.D. or an Ed.D. is the best option for you. Although similar in content, a Ph.D. in higher education typically incorporates more research-based studies and is ideal for students interested in creating educational policy or teaching at a higher education level. Meanwhile, an Ed.D. in higher education focuses more on applicable skills, such as academic leadership and program administration.

Then, think about the program’s specifics. For example, some programs have more rigid dissertation requirements and time commitments than others. Also, you might be able to complete one program entirely online, while another may require an in-person class each week.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Tuition for the higher education doctoral programs on our list averages $905 per credit. With the average program requiring 64 credits, the average total cost of an online Ph.D. in higher education reaches nearly $58,000, which is no small sum.

However, tuition rates can vary widely based on a school’s public or private status, a student’s enrollment status, school prestige and other factors. Some Ph.D. programs are “fully funded,” meaning most students receive a tuition reimbursement plus a stipend for living expenses. Learners may also participate in fellowships, through which they receive funding in exchange for their research contributions.

Consider filling out the FAFSA® to determine your eligibility for federal student loans and other aid. You might also research financial aid options at your school, like scholarships and assistantships, to help you finance your degree.

Is a Ph.D. in higher education worth it?

If you’re interested in becoming a professor, an education administrator, an academic researcher or an educational policymaker, a Ph.D. is likely worth the investment. Throughout the program, you’ll build the leadership skills necessary to help educational organizations and students succeed.

How long is a Ph.D. in higher education?

A Ph.D. in higher education can take between two and five years to complete, depending on whether you enroll part time or full time. While most coursework is usually completable in two to three years, the dissertation often takes one to three years to finish.

Is a Ph.D. worth more than a bachelor's degree?

Yes, a doctoral degree is usually worth more than a bachelor’s degree. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , those with doctoral degrees earn a median of $2,083 per week, while bachelor’s degree holders earn $1,432 weekly.

What’s the Difference Between a Professional Degree and a Doctorate?

A PhD program largely focuses on theoretical learning and the analytical aspects of the discipline you’re studying. It typically involves extensive research presented in a lengthy thesis or dissertation, often proposing a new theory or innovative findings.

On the other hand, a professional doctorate or master’s degree emphasizes gaining knowledge for practical applications and does not typically involve a dissertation. While a PhD can make you an erudite scholar well-equipped to work in research or academia, a professional degree typically leads to a career path as a professional in the industry, government, or nonprofit sector.

Are Online Ph.D. Programs Worth It?

An online Ph.D. program is an ideal choice if you want to balance your career and family responsibilities along with your education.

While there are some preconceived notions that online programs aren’t legitimate, as long as the program you choose is accredited, the degree is the same as one earned in person.

While the annual tuition cost to earn a Ph.D. online averages $12,596 for a public institution and $28,017 for a private university, doctoral graduates enjoy a lower unemployment rate and higher weekly salary than those with less education, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

Did You Know…

  • lowest unemployment rates at 1.6%.
  • In 2019, research found that 39.8% of graduate students were enrolled in online learning.
  • The number of doctorates awarded between 2020 and 2021 dropped by 5.4%.
  • Not all Ph.D.-holders end up working in academia.

Does Accreditation Matter for Online Ph.D. Programs?

A college is accredited after being recognized by an independent institution that verifies the school’s courses and programs meet set quality standards.

The school you choose must be accredited in order for your Ph.D. to be recognized by employers , earn professional licensures, and qualify you for federal financial aid.

Legitimate accreditors are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

How Much Does an Online Ph.D. Cost?

In general, you can expect to pay around $13,000-$30,000 per year in tuition and fees for your online Ph.D.

Several factors affect how much your Ph.D. program will cost, including:

  • Whether the program is fully funded
  • Whether your school is public or private
  • Whether you’re an in-state or out-of-state student
  • How long your program lasts (most Ph.D. programs take 5-7 years to complete)
  • How much financial aid you get

While many in-person and online doctoral programs in the U.S. are fully funded, these tend to be highly competitive.

One way to save money on your online Ph.D. is to attend a program that offers in-state tuition to residents. Make sure you submit the FAFSA each year so you can secure federal financial aid .

You may also need to budget for occasional travel to and from campus and research sites, especially as you work on your dissertation.

What’s the Difference Between a Ph.D. and a Doctorate?

While a Ph.D. and a doctoral degree, or doctorate, both signify the same level of education completed, their uses are different.

Doctorate is the broader term — a Ph.D. is a type of doctorate. Specifically, a Ph.D. is an academic degree that prepares you for a career in research or teaching in your field of study (such as science, English, or economics).

Besides a Ph.D., other types of doctorates include a doctor of medicine (MD), a doctor of education (Ed.D.), and a doctor of psychology (Psy.D.). These degrees are typically used in either an academic or professional setting.

Online Ph.D. Programs That Don’t Require a Dissertation

A dissertation is a final written project culminating in a student’s original research at the end of their Ph.D. program. A dissertation is typically presented and defended by its author. It’s typically required for degrees with an academic or research focus.

Not all Ph.D. programs require a dissertation. For example, some Ph.D. programs in humanities, education, business administration, and criminal justice require simple or no dissertations for a quicker completion time .

What Jobs Can You Get After Earning an Online Ph.D.?

Once you finish your online doctoral program, you can explore a variety of career paths both within and outside academia.

Many Ph.D. graduates, especially those who studied the humanities, go on to become professors. Other popular roles include administrator, scientist, and psychologist.

Graduates of online Ph.D. programs earn a relatively high average base salary of $108,000 a year, according to Payscale .

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is the pinnacle of academic achievement, the highest degree a student can obtain in most fields. It typically qualifies students for the most advanced jobs available. Therefore, earning a PhD is typically a rigorous process that requires a commitment of time and energy as well as an extensive educational and professional background in a chosen field.

The easiest PhD programs remove as many barriers as possible to earning this top degree. To help students find the easiest PhD programs, Intelligent.com reviewed programs based on their accessibility, flexibility, convenience, and cost, resulting in this list. Students can also learn more about different types of doctoral degrees and how to choose the easiest PhD program that’s right for them.

Types of Doctoral Degrees

At the doctoral level of study, there are two types of degrees: the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and professional doctorate degrees, such as Doctor of Education (EdD), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and Doctor of Psychology (PsyD).

PhD programs are research-focused, with students aspiring to add to the body of knowledge for their chosen profession. Students in PhD programs typically spend the first one to two years of their program completing coursework before spending another three to five years conducting research and writing their dissertation under the guidance of a faculty member. PhD programs culminate when students successfully defend their dissertations before a faculty committee. Individuals who earn a PhD typically go on to teach at the post-secondary level or step into research positions in universities, private companies, think tanks, and government.

Professional degrees emphasize advanced technical and practical skills in a given profession. They help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in high-level leadership positions, such as chief executive officers, school administrators, organization directors, and more. Students also learn how to take research and apply it to real-world scenarios to solve complex problems or innovate new methods of accomplishing goals.

In some areas of study, such as education or psychology, students can choose whether they want to earn a PhD or a professional degree. The type of degree you choose depends on your personal interests and career goals.

What to Expect from a PhD Program

As the highest level of education an individual can receive, a PhD is a significant investment of time and energy. Programs typically require anywhere from 60-90 credits, although the specific number of credits will vary by program. This usually translates to two to three years of full-time study.

While PhD programs typically include standard classroom instruction via lectures and seminars, they also usually include more independent study, research, writing, and 1:1 faculty interaction than bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Students in PhD programs may have a lot of flexibility to design independent study courses based on their particular interests or enroll in interdisciplinary courses in other departments to support their research.

The dissertation process is a key component of earning a PhD. In the first or second year of the program, students will begin brainstorming topics for their dissertation and identifying faculty members who can serve as mentors (some programs may assign a faculty member to mentor students through their dissertation process). Students must then create and submit a proposal for faculty approval before they can begin working on their dissertation. The process can take several years, depending on the topic the student is researching, and culminates when the student successfully defends their dissertation before a faculty committee.

How to prepare for a PhD program

The first step to being successful in a PhD program is taking an honest inventory of your responsibilities and available time, energy, and finances to ensure now is the right time to pursue a PhD.

While the easiest PhD programs allow students to complete their education while balancing work and family responsibilities, they still require effort. Students should have a plan for how they will accommodate classes, homework, and dissertation research and writing in their schedules before enrolling in a program.

Find out what kind of support services are available for PhD students, including financial aid, technical support, research labs and facilities, faculty availability, tutoring, and health and wellness services. All of these services may be beneficial throughout your PhD journey.

Frequently Asked Questions About PhD Programs

How much does a phd cost.

According to the Education Data Initiative , the average cost of a PhD degree is $81,900. However, the cost of an individual program varies based on several factors, including the price per credit hour, the total number of credits the program requires, and what type of school the student attends.

Tuition is typically lowest for in-state students at public universities. For the public university programs on this list, the average per-credit tuition rate is $755 for in-state students and $1,473 for out-of-state students. Meanwhile, at private universities, the average per-credit tuition rate is $1,576.

For the most accurate information on the cost of a PhD program, speak to a financial aid counselor at the schools you’re considering.

What financial aid is available for a PhD degree?

Another financial consideration for PhD students is the type of aid they may be eligible to receive. Many doctoral programs offer fellowships or assistantships that help subsidize students’ doctoral study. When researching programs, inquire about the availability and eligibility requirements for these opportunities.

In terms of need-based aid, graduate students can apply for Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS Loans through the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid program by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Colleges also use the information from this application to determine eligibility for institutional need-based aid, like scholarships and grants.

Other sources of financial support include scholarships from external sources, such as professional organizations, nonprofits and private scholarship funds, and community and religious groups. Individuals who plan on working while earning a doctorate degree should find out if their employer offers tuition assistance benefits .

How long does it take to complete a PhD program?

The specific completion time for a PhD program depends on factors like the total number of credits the program requires, the pace at which a student progresses through the program, and how much time students spend on their thesis.

Most PhD programs take three to five years to complete, at minimum, including the time it takes to research and write a dissertation. The length of time a student spends on their dissertation varies based on the particular field, dissertation topic, funding, research parameters, and other factors. Many programs have a limit of three to five years for students working on their dissertation, but these policies also vary by program.

Professional doctorate programs may take less time to complete, as they focus more on developing practical skills. They also typically have fewer credit requirements than PhDs. Students earning a professional doctorate can expect to spend 1-3 years enrolled in their program.

What are the admissions requirements for a PhD?

The advanced nature of PhDs means that most programs have a rigorous application process and are quite selective. Students should carefully review application steps and admissions requirements before beginning an application.

Most PhD programs require that students have a master’s degree, while professional doctorate programs may be open to students who have only obtained a bachelor’s degree. Doctoral programs may also seek applicants with a minimum amount of professional work experience in their field.

Applications for PhD programs commonly include the following materials:

  • Application and required fees
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • Resume or CV

Because PhDs are research- and writing-intensive, programs also commonly request writing samples, such as a master’s thesis, manuscript, or journal articles. In-person or virtual interviews with faculty are also common in the PhD application process.

What can you do with a PhD?

Individuals who earn PhDs are generally considered to have the most advanced knowledge and skills in their field. Therefore, they have a range of options that might not be available to them otherwise.

Teaching at the post-secondary level is a common career path for PhD graduates. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of college professors is expected to increase by 8% through 2032. College professors earn a median annual wage of $84,380, although the field in which a professor teaches can impact their salary.

Individuals with a PhD may also choose to focus on conducting and publishing research in their field. Researchers may work for academic institutions, governments, think tanks, non-profits, and private companies.

Many highly specialized jobs require a doctorate degree, such as psychologist , lawyer , and pharmacist .

How to Choose the PhD Degree Program That’s Right For You

Choose your area of study.

The first step in selecting a PhD program is determining what you will study. You likely already have an idea in mind based on your educational and professional background, but some fields offer multiple different doctoral study options. For example, students who want to pursue a doctoral degree in education can focus on curriculum and instruction , educational administration , educational leadership , or higher education administration .

Depending on your field, you may also have to decide between a research-focused PhD or a skills-based professional doctorate.

Also, consider if a doctorate degree is necessary for your career field or the position you aspire to. In some professions or jobs, a master’s degree is sufficient graduate education. These programs, while rigorous, may be shorter and more cost-effective than a PhD.

Consider your needs

The easiest PhD program is one that will fit into a student’s life with as little disruption as possible. Depending on your circumstances, this may mean attending a program with evening and weekend classes or low-residency requirements.

It also likely means looking at the program’s overall credit requirements and determining how long it will take to finish the program, based on full-time and part-time requirements.

Students should also consider whether they can relocate to attend an in-person PhD program or if they need the flexibility and accessibility of an online doctorate program to earn their degree.

Research schools and programs

Most students start their research by visiting a school’s website, which typically publishes information about curriculum, faculty, experiential learning requirements, student outcomes, cost, and admissions requirements. If you have specific questions, contact the school’s admissions office or attend virtual or in-person information sessions, if available.

To help you determine if a program is a good fit, ask the following questions:

  • What is the program’s curriculum? How does it align with your interests and goals?
  • Who are the faculty members, and what are their qualifications?
  • Are there internship requirements or other experiential learning components?
  • What networking opportunities are available to students?
  • What support services does the institution offer graduate students, including tutoring, tech support, and mental health care?
  • What scholarship and financial aid opportunities are available?
  • What type of accreditation does the institution and program have?

Confirming the school’s accreditation status is essential, as this can impact your eligibility for financial aid, future employment, and further educational opportunities. Colleges in the U.S. can have regional or national accreditation , with regional accreditation being the more widely recognized accreditation status. To verify a school’s accreditation status, visit the Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s database .

Review admissions and eligibility requirements

Because they are terminal degrees, PhD and professional doctorate programs typically have the most rigorous admissions procedures and eligibility requirements. These programs are also typically selective, as students require more faculty resources for instruction and research.

Students should carefully review these requirements before beginning an application to ensure they have the right qualifications.

Specific eligibility criteria will vary by school and program, but students must typically have a master’s degree and work experience in their field. Many PhD programs seek students who have research experience, as demonstrated through publications, manuscripts, and master’s theses. Programs also typically conduct interviews as part of the admissions process so that students can further discuss their academic and research interests and goals.

Overview of the Rising Cost of Education

The cost of tertiary education, particularly master’s and doctoral programs, is often on the rise. According to the World Economic Forum , the general cost of higher education has increased by 65%, and the cost of an undergraduate degree has surged by a massive 67%, when adjusted for inflation, from 2006 to 2016. In a 1985 report by the National Center for Education Statistics , it costs an estimated $5,504 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the USA. Compared to 2017, the cost of pursuing the same bachelor’s degree rose to about $27,357.

In the US, the cost of college tuition is roughly 2.5 times higher in 2017 than it was in 1978 and by 2030, you can guess what it would be, adjusted for inflation. Yet in many countries, the cost is reduced for international students in doctoral programs, while some countries across Scandinavia offer open funded PhD programs.

Doctoral Education

Doctoral students are typically more mature than other students pursuing higher education, meaning that many have taken time out of their initial studies to work or raise a family. As a result, they often have substantial financial responsibilities, particularly if they have dependents of their own. Such students can’t typically look to their families as a source of financial aid, and as a result students pursuing doctoral degrees often require financial aid and scholarships to help them pay for school.

Unfortunately, money is often tight in the current economy, and this has forced many institutions to scale back their financial aid packages, or not offer any at all. With this situation at hand, those who are determined go on to look for free doctoral degree programs to pursue. But is there anything like a free PhD?

One can easily say, “low-cost PhD degrees, tuition-free doctoral studies, PhD programs without tuition fees and so on but then, the cost of living expenditures for three or more years of postgraduate research are only one of many additional costs involved with a doctorate.

Importance of Doctoral Degrees

In addition to the educational and personal fulfillment of obtaining a doctoral degree, it also carries a prestige factor with it. Doctoral degree holders are often seen as an elite group of professionals, deemed experts with the ability to work at the highest levels within a specific field or on the cutting edge of the discipline.

When you obtain a doctoral degree from an international faculty or university, this prestigious level is raised even higher and can open doors to opportunities to work and study all over the world. These doctorate programs also provide students with the opportunity to study abroad and make international connections, collaborate with colleagues from around the world and become part of the technologically dynamic international research community of universities and other institutions.

And speaking of Austria, students of the medical sciences can expect to enjoy a tuition-free education at the doctoral level. The same applies to the life sciences, natural sciences, and technical sciences. And to the 99% of tuition-free programs, you can add the remaining 1% of paid programs. This is the price for a very small number of special programs. There is a small fee to be paid each semester to the Austrian Student Union for membership, insurance, and a postage stamp.

In Chile, tradition and modernity sit side by side. The country has invested heavily in the practice of innovative learning and is a popular choice for postgraduate students. Chile is also a country offering free or low tuition for Ph.Ds. It is in Latin America, and you may want to consider the cost of living. However, the payoff in terms of having access to some of the best natural laboratories for research in the world makes it a desirable place to pursue a doctorate.

As it turns out, France is home to the largest number of the world’s most prestigious and respected institutions. Doctorate students here not only have the privilege of earning a degree for free but can also get financial aid to help cover their living expenses. Researchers on social issues, discussing results of their surveys

In addition, you may gain practical skills related to the responsibilities involved in leading human services organizations. For example, you might study grant writing, needs assessment, and program implementation.

It could also be useful for anyone interested in directing public policy, conducting policy-related research, teaching public administration courses, or working in a legislative capacity.

Doctoral candidates in public health learn about biostatistics and epidemiology. It’s also helpful to understand factors that influence people’s health, such as genetics, environment, and human behavior.

If you get a PhD in Public Health, you may study grant writing, health ethics, and the structure of the healthcare system as well.
