Admiral Christopher Columbus never revealed his origin, creating a mystery with a five-century search to which many researchers are dedicated. The most internationally accepted hypothesis considers that he, in his youth, was a Genoese weaver (Cristoforo Colombo) and, later, after having spent some years in Portugal, he became the famous Admiral who discovered the Indies (America) at the service of the Catholic Monarchs. This hypothesis of the Genoese weaver, because of its inconsistencies, has been strongly contested, and several other hypotheses have emerged for the origin of the Admiral. In this article, and based on existing documents, 12 of the main facts are shown, that make unfeasible the hypothesis that the Admiral was the Genovese weaver.

A lot of speculation and hypothesis has been and still is about Christopher Columbus' birthplace, but the historiographic consensus mostly favours the established theory that the Admiral of the Indies was a Genovese citizen, even if the exact point within the Republic is difficult to ascertain. We also mention the most well-known alternative hypothesis that states Columbus' was Catalan. We here agree with the global consensus as it is the best explanation in regards to primary sources and first-hand witnesses.

Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of America; he was a daring navigator, brave and intrepid, ambitious and cruel with the Indians, admired and blessed in some countries and hated in others. Was Columbus a great man? The history of the discovery of America and the voyages of Christopher Columbus are reviewed. Comments are provided on the judgment of history regarding Columbus from Europe, Spain, the USA, and Latin America.

Christopher Columbus is the garbled pseudonym of a very wellborn, learned, seafaring Portuguese nobleman.

A paper that highlights the *real* Christopher Columbus, based on authentic dispatches and interactions reported by and from the man himself. This reality is juxtaposed to the whitewashed revisionism that has created the celebratory theme of Columbus Day in the United States.

The information that supports the current hypothesis related to the youth of Admiral Christopher Columbus (known in Castile as Cristobal Colón) is essentially obtained from documents found in Genoa and included in the Italian collection called “Raccolta.” Besides these Genoese documents, the main information linked to the life of the Admiral is obtained from his biography “The History of the Life and Deeds of the Admiral Christopher Columbus” written by his second son Hernando Colon and later partly confirmed by the priest Bartolomé de las Casas who published it in “The History of the Indies.” In addition to the biography, the Admiral also left many handwritten documents (logbooks, letters, books, etc.) with significant information about his life. In all these documents there is no clear information about his origin, but they have significant clues about his birth year, which is compared in this paper with the Genoese hypothesis, leading to an almost ten years older Admiral Christopher Columbus. This earlier birth arises from a different chronology of the Admiral’s life, with a longer stay in Portugal and wider contacts with King John II, explaining the great navigation experience that he presented in his voyage to the Indies, and clarifying some questions put by researchers about known facts of his life.

Christopher Columbus lived in Portugal, attended the Royal Court, maintained contacts with King John II, married a Portuguese noblewoman, sailed on Portuguese maritime explorations, lived and had a son in Porto Santo island and, despite all this, there is not a single reference to a Christopher Columbus (or Colon, original Spanish name) in Portuguese documents prior to his departure for Castile (1485). In this text a chronology of his life is presented based on all the existing documents. These elements are compared with facts of Portugal History, even when he was already in Castile, and with the life chronology of the Privateer Peter Athayde, showing unexpected correlations.
