He is so nervous that he finds it very difficult to tell Tschubukov the purpose of his visit. He says that he has come to ask him for a favor, though he does not deserve it. Tschubukov thinks that he has come to borrow money, and asks him not to beat about the bush. After much hesitation and stammering, Lomov tells him that he has come to ask for the hand of his daughter, Natalia. Tschubukov naturally feels very happy and kisses him. He says that he will go to call his daughter and assures Lomov that she will at once accept this proposal. When Lomov is left alone, he feels that he is cold and his whole body is trembling. He thinks that Natalia is an excellent housekeeper, not at all bad-looking, well-educated - what more he should ask. Moreover, if he does not marry now, he will never get married. He has been already thirty-five. He has a weak heart, and he suffers from palpitation. The worst of all is the way he sleeps. He hardly lies down and begins to doze when he gets a pull in his left side and something begins to hammer in his left shoulder and in his head. Natalia is shocked to hear that the Oxen Meadows belong to Lomov. She claims that the meadows are hers, and not his. Poor Lomov feels all the more excited. He tries to explain that once there was a dispute over the Oxen Meadows, but now everybody knows that they belong to him. His aunt's grandmother put the meadows, free from all costs, into the hands of the peasants of her father's grandfather for a certain time while they were laying bricks for his grandmother. These people used the meadows free of cost for about forty years and began to consider the land as theirs. Natalia, however, does not believe it. Lomov is prepared to show the papers, but of no use. She tells him that they have owned the property for nearly three hundred years; the meadows are not worth much, but she cannot stand injustice.

If he keeps explaining it for two days, she will not be convinced. She does not want to take his property, and she refuses to give up what belongs to her. The discussion turns into a quarrel and the marriage proposal is forgotten. Natalia tells him that she will immediately send her reapers to the meadows. Lomov promises to turn them out. They shout at each other.

In the course of their quarrel, Tschubukov enters. When he is arguing about the Oxen Meadows, he sides with his daughter. Lomov again tries to explain, but Tschubukov does not listen. He tells Lomov that the latter cannot prove anything by yelling. He would rather give them to the peasants than let him claim them. Lomov becomes rude. Tschubukov begs him to address him respectfully for he is not used to have people address him in that tone of a rude person. Lomov calls him a land-grabber, and tells him that he will prove in the court. Tschubukov gets furious, calls him an intriguer and accuses his whole family. In this way, they start to pull each other's family. Lomov says the entire race of the Lomov has always been honorable, and never has one been brought to trial for embezzlement as Tschubukov's uncle has been. Tschubukov tells Lomov that the latter's grandfather was a drunkard and that his aunt had eloped with an architect. Lomov say that Tschubukov's mother was humpbacked. So they drag their ancestors in their foolish quarrel.

Now Lomov gets much excited. The palpitation of his heart becomes unbearable. His eyes are blurred. His foot goes numb. It seems as though he were dying. He takes his hat, and staggers out of the room. Tschubukov warns him not to come into his house again. The father and the daughter curse him and tell him all sorts of dirty names.

After Lomov has gone, Tschubukov says that the fool had the courage to come to him with a marriage proposal. When Natalia hears that he had come to propose to her for marriage and that is why he was dressed in evening clothes, she begins to weep and falls into an armchair. She blames her father for not telling her that before. She goes into hysterics, and asks her father to bring him back immediately. The poor father feels embarrassed: they have insulted him and thrown him out of their house; and now he should call him back. How ridiculous! He feels like shooting himself. Natalia blames her father and calls him brutal. She thinks if it were not for him, Lomov would not have gone. Her behavior, indeed, is very funny. Tschubukov rushes out and calls him back.

Lomov returns; he is in a wretched state. His heart is beating terribly; his side is hurting him; his leg is lamed. Natalia feels sorry for her mistake, and admits that the Oxen Meadows belong to him. She suggests that they should talk about something else. She wants to avoid every possibility of dispute, and wishes Lomov to make the proposal straight away. She asks him if he is going on hunting soon. Lomov replies that he expects to begin after the harvest. His dog, Guess, has gone lame: perhaps it is a dislocation, or maybe he has been bitten by some other dog.

Lomov is very proud of his dog; he has bought him for a hundred and twenty five roubles and thinks it is very cheap. Natalia however, does not agree. Her dog, Leap, cost more than eighty five roubles, and he is in every way better than Guess. They are again dragged into an argument over the superiority of each other's dogs. In his opinion Leap is over-short; he has a short lower jaw, and therefore he cannot catch his prey. Natalia cannot stand this. She thinks that her dog is pure-bred, whereas his dog is old, ugly and skinny and nobody can figure out his pedigree. She does not like when a person does not say what he really thinks. In the course of hot discussion, Lomov again gets excited; he feels the palpitation of heart, and his heart is bursting.

The father again enters the room. Both turn to him for opinion. He says Guess certainly has his good points. He is from a good breed, has a good stride, strong haunches, and so forth. But he has two faults he is old and he has a short lower jaw. Lomov tells Tschubukov that on a hunting expedition his dog, Guess, had run neck to neck with the Count's dog. But Leap was left behind. Tschubukov says that the Count struck his dog with a whip; that is why he was left behind. Lomov reminds him that his dog was whipped because instead of running after the fox, he bit the sheep. Tschubukov, however, does not agree. He requests Lomov to stop that argument. But that does not seem possible. Tschubukov gets angry. He tells Lomov to stay at home with his palpitation; he is not fit for hunting. They again abuse each other and call names. Lomov begins to see stars; every part of his body is bursting. He falls into a chair and faints.

Seeing Lomov faint, Natalia thinks that he is dead. She starts weeping and crying, and requests her father to call in the doctor. The poor father feels miserable. He holds a glass of water to Lomov's lips, but the latter does not drink water. The father finds himself in a terrible situation. He is so mad with desperation that he wants to shoot himself. In the meantime, Lomov comes to senses. He sees mist before his eyes. Tschubukov does not want to take any more chance by leaving them alone. He at once speaks out that his daughter is willing to marry. He thrusts Lomov's hand into his daughter's hand and gives them his blessings. He just wants to be left in peace. Lomov is still dazed. He is not able to understand what is going on. At last they kiss each other and are reconciled. But they again start quarrelling over their dogs. Natalia says, "Guess is worse than Leap. Lomov says, "Better". Amid their shouting, the poor old father shouts, "Champagne, Champagne".

n the short play “A Marriage Proposal,” Anton Chekhov describes the odd courtship of Lomov, who seeks marriage with his neighbor’s daughter. Lomov, aged 35, is a long time neighbor of Choobookov. He is a landowner who has inherited property from his aunt. Though he is well fed and healthy, he is hypochondriac. He suffers from palpitations and sleeplessness due to his nervousness. He has passed a critical stage of marriage. He now knows that if he will search for an ideal woman or true love, he will never marry. So he is now desperate to marry Natalia. He thinks that she is not bad-looking and has some education. He wants to lead a steady and regular life. So, he visits the house of his neighbor Choobookov early morning dressed in a formal suit. Choobookov is surprised at the unexpected arrival of Lomov in his formal dress. Lomov asks him Natalia’s hand in marriage. Choobookov is also desperately looking for a suitable man for his 25-year-old daughter, Natalia. As a father of a grown-up daughter, he immediately gives joyful permission to marry Natalia.

She is invited into the room. Lomov becomes nervous and instead of putting his proposal, he begins to beat about the bush. When he says that his Ox Meadows touch her birch woods, she begins to argue with him about the ownership of that piece of land. After her father notices they are arguing, he joins in, and then sends Lomov out of the house. Choobookov then tells his daughter that Lomov was there to propose her.

Natalia repents and asks her father to call him back. Lomov comes and she asks him about his hunting program. He says that he will start hunting after harvest because his best dog has gone lame. At this point, Natalia contradicts him again and claims that her dog Leap is better than his dog Guess. Thus the quarrel begins again till over-excitement makes Lomov faint in a chair. Seeing him quiet and unmoving, Natalia thinks that he is dead and becomes hysterical. At last Lomov comes into senses and Choobookov forces them to kiss each other and accept the marriage proposal. Immediately following the kiss, Natalia and Lomov start quarreling. Choobookov shouts for Champagne because he wants to celebrate their marriage and at the same time he feels free by the burden of his grown-up daughter.

Anton Chekhov is known for brilliant, full-length plays, yet in his younger years he fancied writing short, one-act comedies like "The Marriage Proposal." Filled with wit, irony, and brilliantly developed and impassioned characters, this three-person play shows the young playwright at his best.

The Comedies of Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov's full-length masterpieces may be considered comedies, yet they are filled with dour moments, failed loves, and sometimes even death.

This is especially true in his play " The Seagull " -- a comedic drama which ends with a suicide. Although other plays such as " Uncle Vanya " and "The Cherry Orchard" do not culminate in such an explosive resolution, a feeling of hopelessness permeates each of Chekhov's plays. This is a sharp contrast to some of his more jovial one-act comedies.

"The Marriage Proposal," for example, is a delightful farce that could have ended very darkly, but the playwright instead maintains its energetic whimsy, concluding in a successful albeit combative engagement.

The Characters of "A Marriage Proposal"

The main character, Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov, is a heavy-set man in his mid-thirties, prone to anxiety, stubbornness, and hypochondria. These flaws are further amplified because he becomes a nervous wreck when he tries to propose marriage.

Stepan Stephanovitch Chubukov owns land next to Ivan. A man in his early seventies, he gladly grants permission to Ivan, but soon calls off the engagement when an argument over property ensues. His chief concerns are maintaining his wealth and keeping his daughter happy.

Natalya Stepanovna is the female lead in this three-person play. She can be jovial and welcoming, yet stubborn, proud and possessive, just like her male counterparts.

Plot Summary of "A Marriage Proposal"

The play is set in the rural countryside of Russia during the late 1800s. When Ivan arrives at the home of the Chubukov family, the elderly Stepan assumes that the well-dressed young man has come to borrow money.

Instead, Stepan is pleased when Ivan asks for his daughter's hand in marriage. Stepan whole-heartedly bestows his blessing, declaring that he already loves him like a son. The old man then leaves to fetch his daughter, assuring the younger man that Natalya will graciously accept the proposal.

While alone, Ivan delivers a soliloquy , explaining his high level of nervousness, as well as a number of physical ailments that have recently plagued his daily life. This monologue sets up everything that unfolds next.

Everything is going well when Natalya first enters the room. They chat pleasantly about the weather and agriculture. Ivan attempts to bring up the subject of marriage by first stating how he has known her family since childhood.

As he touches upon his past, he mentions his family's ownership of the Oxen Meadows. Natalya stops the conversation to clarify. She believes that her family has always owned the meadows, and this disagreement ignites a caustic debate, one that sends tempers flaring and Ivan's heart palpitating.

After they yell at each other, Ivan feels dizzy and tries to calm himself down and change the subject back to matrimony, only to get immersed in the argument yet again. Natalya's father joins the battle, siding with his daughter, and angrily demanding that Ivan leave at once.

As soon as Ivan is gone, Stepan reveals that the young man has planned to propose to Natalya. Shocked and apparently desperate to be married, Natalya insists that her father bring him back.

Once Ivan has returned, she tries to bend the subject toward romance. However, instead of discussing marriage, they begin to argue over which of their dogs is the better hound. This seemingly innocuous topic launches into yet another heated argument.

Finally, Ivan's heart cannot take it anymore and he flops down dead. At least that's what Stepan and Natalya believe for a moment. Fortunately, Ivan breaks out of his fainting spell and regains his senses enough for him to propose to Natalya. She accepts, but before the curtain falls, they return to their old argument regarding who owns the better dog.

In short, "The Marriage Proposal" is a delightful gem of a comedy. It makes one wonder why so much of Chekhov's full-length plays (even the ones labeled as comedies) seem so thematically heavy.

The Silly and the Serious Sides of Chekhov

So, why is " The Marriage Proposal " so whimsical whereas his full-length plays are realistic? One reason that may account for the silliness found in this one-act is that " The Marriage Proposal " was first performed in 1890 when Chekhov was just entering his thirties and still in relatively good health. When he wrote his famous comedy-dramas his illness ( tuberculosis ) had more severely affected him. Being a physician, Chekhov must have known that he was nearing the end of his life, thereby casting a shade over "The Seagull" and the other plays.

Also, during his more prolific years as a playwright, Anton Chekhov traveled more and beheld many impoverished, marginalized people of Russia, including inmates of a penal colony. "The Marriage Proposal" is a humorous microcosm of marital unions among the Russian upper class in late 19th century Russia. This was Chekhov's world during his late 20s.

As he became more worldly, his interests in others outside the middle classes increased. Plays such as "Uncle Vanya" and "The Cherry Orchard" feature an ensemble of characters from many different economic classes, from the wealthiest to the most impoverished.

Finally, one must consider the influence of Constantin Stanislavski, a theater director who would become one of the most important figures in modern theater. His dedication to bringing a naturalistic quality to drama may have further inspired Chekhov to write less silly plays, much to the chagrin of theater-goers who like their comedies broad, loud, and full of slapstick.

There is no wrong way to ask your special someone to marry you, but there are ways to make sure the marriage proposal goes off without a hitch. With the help of Sarah Pease , professional proposal planner at Brilliant Event Planning , here are the tips for taking this big step toward wedded bliss in stride.

Do Make It Meaningful

If ever there was a time for getting sentimental, this is it. Think back on the noteworthy moments in your relationship. Take your sweetheart back to where you first met, kissed, or said, "I love you!" Share a favorite restaurant, view, stroll, or even a song, movie, or book? Creatively draw on these special details to, well, make a special day even more so.

Don't Be Trendy

Sure, that restaurant that everyone is talking about may be the perfect option for a romantic night out, but will today's hot spot be tomorrow's old news?

When it comes to selecting a destination for popping the question, "I advise my clients to consider finding a place that will always be there," Pease says. "Whether it's a historical monument or an outdoor location, the idea that you can always return there—even when you're old and gray—is a great one."

Still interested in ressies at your original destination? Consider going there before or after your proposal. Then jot down the evening's highlights—from your drink choices to your dessert fare. That way, you can always re-create the magical meal for anniversaries to come.

Do Consider If the Proposal Should Be Public or Private

Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight, while some may dream of sharing the joy. If you are unsure what your beloved would prefer, it's time to do some digging, which, honestly, may start with subtly asking him or her themselves. Scour YouTube for proposal examples, act like you have just come across them on your social feed, and see how your sweetheart responds to different scenarios. Do Develop a Decoy

"An airtight decoy story is a vital part of a great marriage proposal," Pease says. "Begin developing it by thinking of things that she can't say no to—and would be excited to do. Involve an accomplice to really throw her off track and plan it out." Some of Pease's favorite excuses? Friends or family members are in town, and you're meeting them for dinner. You got tickets to an invite-only performance at the theater. There's a cocktail party for work that you have to attend with a date. You get the idea.

Don't Let the Secret Slip

The more details people know, the more you risk ruining the surprise. Find out who needs to know what ahead of time, and keep everyone on a need-to-know basis. "Even vendors that you hire to help you pop the question—if they do not absolutely need to know, then don't tell them," Pease advises. "It's more fun to share the happy news together as a couple anyway."

Do Know Where She's Coming From

We mean this literally. If you're planning on proposing on a Thursday night in front of all of your friends and family, find out in advance what your girlfriend's or boyfriend's schedule is like on that day.

She might be on an endorphin high if she's coming straight from her evening run or weekly spin class, but what she probably wants in that moment is a shower, not the spotlight. Likewise, if he's been putting in long hours at the office and comes home every night completely pooped, you might want to wait until the weekend when you're both relaxed.

Don't Neglect Your Own Look

Planning your "proposal outfit" may sound silly, but we're talking logistics more than we are fashion (though you will want to look sharp). Keep the ring box safe and concealed up until the big moment by choosing pants or a jacket with deep pockets (and no holes!).

Do Have a Backup Plan

Thinking a walk along the beach would be the perfect place? Or the top of a mountain after a daylong hike? Those choices are both lovely … until you wake up that day to dark skies and stormy weather.

As you're brainstorming your plan, have a few indoor spaces—her favorite museum, for example, or the place you first met—in your back pocket should Mother Nature prove uncooperative. Furthermore, know what to do in case of traffic, or if she arrives later or even earlier than expected.

"If you're on vacation overseas, think ahead and have your international calling set up on your phone, or Wi-Fi so you can Skype to share the news," Pease recommends. "If you're popping the question on a Friday morning before work, be sure it's okay if she runs a few minutes late. Once you hear yes, you'll want to bask in the glow of being engaged before having to run off to 'real life.'"

Do Stick to an Idea, Not a Script

Of course you'll want to have some notion of what to say when you propose and how to say it. Maybe you want to reflect on a shared memory or common interest, or to simply tell him or her what you love most about them—do that, and it will be heartfelt no matter the words you choose. But if you memorize lines like an actor in a play, it will sound unnatural at best and forced at worst.

"Think about what you want to say ahead of time and focus on three things that you definitely want to communicate," Pease suggests. "More than that will be too much and you'll forget it."

Don't Sweat It

If something unexpected ruins the moment, Pease says, "Laugh it off and remind yourself that this is real life—not a rom-com. And think of the hilarious story you'll have to tell in the future."

If you're a guy about to propose to your girlfriend, tradition would tell you that you should approach her parents first to ask for her hand in marriage. If you're not the traditional type, however (and won't be offending any of her family members who are), there's nothing standing between you and your to-be-fiancée, except maybe a mean case of the jitters. That said, once you slip the ring on her finger, you should call or visit both sets of parents before broadcasting your news to the wider, social-media world. Acknowledging that you're committed to your significant other is only half of the battle, however: Planning a proposal is a major undertaking that involves everything from shopping for an engagement ring to memorizing that very important speech. Meaning, asking your partner to marry you involves more than just getting down on one knee—and preparation is key (this isn't a simple conversation, after all).

To help you make this long-awaited moment as perfect as possible (and to ensure it's the type of proposal your partner wants ) , we asked two experts to provide their top tips for popping the question. Ahead, here are 13 things you can’t forget to do before you get down on one knee.

What to Know Before Proposing to Your Partner

Proposing to your partner may be one of the most exciting—and nerve-wracking!—times of your life. Though you may have dreamt of this moment the minute you laid eyes on your significant other, actually uttering the words "Will you marry me" is something you need to be mentally prepared to do.

So, how do you get yourself ready for this all-important experience? "Think of all of the things that made you fall in love with them throughout your time together, and start visualizing and dreaming about the future you want for each other (family planning, holiday traditions, travel, work/life balance)," shares licensed mental health counselor Wale Okerayi. "Start thinking about the type of marriage you want to have and what tools you need to achieve it, and discuss your feelings about this significant life transition with a mental health professional."

Once you're mentally prepared to pop the question, follow the below steps to plan the perfect proposal your partner will remember forever.

Ahead, here's how to plan an unforgettable and personal proposal.

Have a Conversation With Your Partner About the Future

This might seem obvious, but before you start plotting, it’s important to make sure you both have marriage on the brain. Talk to your partner about the future. Let them know that one day you’d like to be married and ask if they see marriage in their future, too. Nervous about making this conversation feel too much like a proposal? Keep it broad by discussing your best friend’s recent engagement and leading into it that way. Is it a hard conversation? Yes. But hopefully, you’ll come away from it with an idea of what your partner will say when you open that ring box.

Chat With Their Parents

Old-school? Yes. Important? Maybe. It really depends on the family. If your partner has hinted in any way that you need to ask his or her parents for their hand in marriage, do it. That doesn’t mean your partner is anyone’s property, though. Try something like this: "I am deeply in love with your son/daughter, and we want to spend our lives together. I am planning to propose and want you to be involved in this exciting moment."

Buy the Bauble

The engagement ring is a piece of jewelry your partner will wear every day for the rest of their life, so get a sense of what they really love. Snap photos of the jewelry they wear every day, take a peek at their Pinterest boards, or ask a close friend or family member to help narrow it down. As for jewelers, get recommendations to make sure you’re purchasing from a trusted store with great reviews and service.

Last, but certainly not least, find out their ring size . If it’s not a secret, just ask. If you’re going the surprise route, check your partner’s jewelry. Find a ring that he or she wears regularly (and make a note of which finger it goes on). Then either bring it with you to a jeweler or mark how far it fits on your own finger. Many jewelers can also make a good guess at a ring size based on your partner’s height and weight.

Get Personal

Now that you have a ring, it’s time to plan the proposal . Think about the type of proposal your partner will love, whether it’s a grand gesture, an intimate moment, or a surprise surrounded by family and friends. "Choose a meaningful location or romantic getaway with personal significance, such as the site of your first date, a favorite restaurant, or a place they’ve always wanted to visit," shares event planner Yana Daryeva. "Incorporate small, meaningful details that show your knowledge of their likes and dislikes, such as their favorite flowers, colors, or music."

Consider Hiring a Professional

You know your love best, but sometimes it's worth asking for help when planning the right proposal. More specifically, an event planner can help you curate the ultimate surprise. Daryeva also recommends hiring a professional photographer or videographer to memorialize this special day. "[Your partner] will appreciate the attention to detail and the ability to look back on the moment," she explains.

Prepare Your Speech

You don’t need to have your speech totally written out, but spend a little time jotting down what you’d like to say. Getting your thoughts on paper will give you some direction when it’s time to pop the question, even if you end up winging half of it anyway.

As for what to say in your speech? Okerayi shares, "Remind your partner about all of the reasons you love them and why you want to spend the rest of your life with them, share key moments in your relationship that grew your love and trust towards them (also add some funny moments), share the things you love about them (personality, passions, beliefs, etc), establish your long term commitment to them, and don't forget to ask the big question at the end"

Plan a Celebration

You don’t need to plan a full-on engagement party , but make sure you’ve got an idea of how the two of you will celebrate the big moment. Book a table at your favorite restaurant, tuck some Champagne in the fridge, or have a few friends waiting in the wings.

Take your partner's personality into account to determine whether they'd prefer a one-on-one celebration or a family affair.

Set Up a Fake Backstory

To avoid blowing the surprise , come up with a foolproof ruse that leads your partner off track. They may know something's up, especially if you're taking a trip or have out-of-the-ordinary plans, but a fake game plan is needed to keep your love a little unsure as to what is happening.

Keep the Ring Safe

From the second you have the ring in your hands, keep it safe. Invest in insurance and then find a safe place to hide the ring until it’s time. When you’re ready to propose, safety is still key. Make sure the ring is secure in a zipped pocket or safely in the box—somewhere you’ll be able to reach it easily without dropping it.

Have a Photographer on Standby

Whether you hire a professional or trust your future sister-in-law and her iPhone, your soon-to-be fiancé(e) will love you all the more for finding someone to document the occasion. If they have no idea the proposal's coming, you can expect absolutely epic reaction snapshots .

If you'd rather no one be present for the moment, set up your phone in a hidden spot and press record.

Discreetly Store the Ring

Nothing ruins spontaneity faster than your partner seeing the bulge of a ring box in your pocket. To avoid this from happening, purchase a small ring box that'll look discrete when you hide the sparkler in your pocket or sock pre-proposal.

Be Flexible

Life happens, so be prepared to go with the flow. Don’t rush the proposal just because the sun is about to set or dinner is nearly over—wait until the moment really feels right. And if you’ve planned something a little more low-key, that very well might mean waiting a few days if your sweetheart is stressed from work or the weather isn’t cooperating.

Don't Rush It

Now you're ready to pop the question! When the moment comes, take a deep breath, get down on one knee , and pitch the sentimental speech you've probably rehearsed a million times. Be sure to also give your partner a moment—they'll need time to process, cry, and hug it out. Then, once they've collected themselves, figure out when to officially put on the ring. Or your partner may beat you to the punch and hold out their hand for you to do the honors.

“The Marriage Proposal” by Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov is considered to be one of the most notable and acknowledged Russian playwrights among the world. His unique approach to writing plays is shown in their structure, themes, and language. Chekhov is primarily known for his significant dramatic masterpieces, including “Three Sisters” and “Uncle Vanya”, but it is important to notice that his creative path in dramaturgy began with the works in less serious genres, such as vaudeville. Those early plays are essential because they contain the origins of Chekhov’s unique style of writing.

As I was asked to watch the staging of “The Marriage Proposal” (1888), a one-act vaudeville, I would reflect on its artistic features in order to reveal the peculiarities of Chekhov’s approach to creating the dramatic action. The plot of the piece is quite simple, since the play contains only one act: Lomov, a 35 years old landowner, visits his neighbor Chubukov to ask for his daughter’s hand (Chekhov 2). Chubukov is genuinely happy with the news, but he forgets to notify his daughter Natalia about the purpose of Lomov’s visit. The situational humor of the play is based on that misunderstanding: the characters begin to argue about a piece of land which would ultimately become their mutual property if they are getting married. When Natalia finally finds out about Lomov’s intentions, she forgets about their argument but the plighted lovers involve into another dispute about whose dog is better.

On the surface level, the play is an example of the vaudeville, since the action is fast-paced, the humor is primarily situational, and the characters are caught in misunderstanding of the situation. But what is amusing is the Chekhov’s execution of the vaudeville genre in order to produce not only comic effect. Early plays by Chekhov were criticized on the grounds of their discrepancy to the canon of the genre, since they lacked the development of action and there was too much domestic details. However, this criticism derived from the misunderstanding of the Chekhov’s method of dramaturgy. Firstly, his intention was to show the everyday life in its routine details. Secondly, even in such lightweight genre as vaudeville, he applied his own vision of comedy that could be described as the laughter combined with the poignancy. It will later fully flourish in his masterpieces, but the rudiments of Chekhov’s approach are found in his early works.

Personally, I was quite impressed with “The Marriage Proposal”. Foremost, it is a comedy play, and it serves that purpose with the excellence. Since it is dialogue-based and lasts only one act, the main focus is on the language. Chekhov portrays his characters through their speech, fulfilling the comic function, as well as the function of characters’ development. Another interesting trait of the play which should be considered is the development of the plot since it does not follow the vaudeville pattern. Usually, the story in vaudeville revolves around intrigues of some sort; the characters act to solve their problems, and it keeps the plot going. But in “The Marriage Proposal” the plot is driven by the inability to act, and when the proposal is finally made, it is not likely to call the ending happy. This is the most impressive feature of the play, in my opinion, because even in the genre of vaudeville Chekhov was able to express (even though it is implicit) the bitter feeling of people’s detachment and inability to hear each other. In general, I enjoyed the play quite a lot, and after watching it, I am willing to explore Chekhov’s artistic world further.

Since the commencement of the play Chekov divides the responsibility of each character’s introduction amongst the fellow characters as it is also apparent from the fact that rather than using stage directions or any other technique he utilizes dialogues as a mode for explaining the characters of Lemov and Natalia.

Lemov represents a young nervous man who is at a point in life where he badly desires to get settled though he is agitated at broaching the subject with the respective bride’s father Tschub. This hesitation is highly apparent in the lines where he says, “It is not the first time I have had the honor of turning to you for assistance… I beg your pardon I am a bit excited I’ll take a drink of water first” (Chekov 499). These lines depict his restlessness as well as provide the readers with an interesting insight about his character that he is a young man at brink of committing himself in a matrimonial relationship and the whole process of asking for Tschub’s daughter’s hand makes him jittery.

Lemov’s dialogues also enlighten the readers about the reasons for marrying Natalia as he says, “I’m cold…the chief thing is to settle matters…I’m thirty-five a critical age you might say…I must live a well regulated life” (Chekov 500). In other words Lemov represents a guy in the prime age of getting married, who has a bad case of nerves about committing himself in a binding relationship. However he is brave enough to be willing to take the plunge because of his stature in life and the requirement of his health i.e. he believes having a wife will cure him from a bad heart.

Moreover he is a man who has the habit of either talking in riddles or straying from the actual topic as it is evident from his failed attempts of proposing to Natalia. As time and again he says, “Only listen until I have finished…” (Chekov 502) rather than coming directly to the point he keeps getting in arguments with Natalia because of his lack of being able to steer the conversation in the right direction. Moreover through his assertions the readers realize that he considers himself a self-righteous and a fair man which is again concluded from his assertion, “my lady I have never appropriated other people’s property and I shall permit no one to accuse me of such a thing” (Chekov 503).

His indignation further highlights his personality traits to the readers although Natalia believes otherwise. However it cannot be denied that he is a highly principled individual yet he has a kind heart and has the tendency of eventually giving in to an argument. This is apparent from the lines, “it was only principle of the thing the property isn’t worth much to me but the principle is worth a great deal” (Chekov 507). Man plans epic 'Law & Order: SVU'-themed proposal with the help of Ice-T

A “Law and Order: SVU” superfan got the surprise of a lifetime when her fiancé planned an elaborate“"SVU”-themed proposal featuring one of the show's iconic detectives.

Maddie Anderson, 32, was getting ready to go on a shopping trip with a friend when her neighbor surprised her at her door.

The neighbor handed Anderson a dog bandana that read “Operation Find Ty” and a letter explaining Maddie's mission for the day: Find her boyfriend, Tyler Dycus, before sunset by solving a series of clues.

Anderson has always enjoyed a good mystery, she tells TODAY.com.

That’s why the procedural drama “Law and Order: SVU” has been her favorite show since high school.

“I have always been really obsessed with mysteries and puzzles and games,” she says. “I think that’s why I’m drawn to shows like that, because I’m the one who’s already guessing the person who did it.” 

Despite her fandom, she couldn’t have predicted that Ice-T, who stars as Sgt. Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on “SVU,” would play a major role in her own mystery.

Unbeknownst to her, Dycus had purchased a video appearance from Ice-T to participate in the scavenger hunt.

“Hey what's up Maddie, it's Ice-T, a.k.a. Fin from ‘SVU’,” the rapper and actor said in the custom video. “I'm here to send you on an extreme scavenger hunt. It's called ‘Operation Find Ty.’ Your job is to find Ty before sunset.”

“I know you can do this, I know you have the detective skills,” Ice-T continued. “I expect nothing but excellence from you.”

The video concluded with the iconic “dun dun” sound effect from the “SVU” opening credits.

Anderson says that she “couldn’t even speak” when she saw Ice-T appear on her screen.

“I was so confused because when he first came on the screen, my brain was just trying to process it. And then he said my name, and I’m like, how does he know my name?” she recalls.

A friend filmed Anderson’s shocked reaction to the video.

“I just thought, if this is how the day is starting, I can’t even imagine what’s about to happen," Anderson says.

From the beginning, she had an inkling that the scavenger hunt might end with a proposal.

“Maybe I didn’t know 100 percent, but I think at that point I had a pretty good idea," she says.

The next stop on her scavenger hunt was a local park, where her sister-in-law and nephew were waiting with several games and puzzles.

Friends and family joined her at other stops along the way, including the San Diego Zoo and the Japanese Friendship Garden.

However, the biggest surprise of the day was yet to come.

Anderson's mother met her at Nordstrom with her favorite dress, shoes, and makeup before Anderson was blindfolded and driven to her final scavenger hunt destination.

When she arrived and removed the blindfold, Anderson found herself at the exact place where her late father had proposed to her mother in 1986.

“My mom and I looked at each other, and I had this like epiphany of where I was, and then it just sunk in,” Anderson says.

Dycus then popped the question on the exact spot where her parents had stood nearly 40 years before.

“I was completely shocked. I was so touched. My dad passed away in 2013, so it was just so incredible how thoughtful that was,” Anderson says.

Her engagement ring, which Dycus designed, contains a diamond from Anderson’s mother’s engagement ring.

Dycus had one more surprise up his sleeve: a post-proposal celebration with their loved ones.

“It meant so much," Anderson says. "The most important thing to me is my family and friends. It was so special. There was so much love in one place.”

Anderson shared the details of her 12-hour scavenger hunt proposal in a seven-part video series on TikTok.

“It's just so special that he took so much time to put together this whole day that was really curated to me and what I’m interested in. I hope everyone has their own version of that,” she says.

Anderson and Dycus' wedding is scheduled for May 2025, and they plan to include a shoutout to “SVU” in honor of their proposal.

“I think we definitely need to incorporate something from ‘SVU’ considering it was such a theme for us," she says. “Maybe we need to get Ice-T to do a little welcome video.”

Chapters for Evolving Genders: The Dynamics of Narrative Benchmarking in Asian Literature

We are soliciting chapter proposals for an edited volume that investigates the origins and evolutions of gender benchmarking in Asian literature. This proposed book volume is tentatively titled Evolving Genders: The Dynamics of Narrative Benchmarking in Asian Literature .It is a collection of scholarly research outputs that examines how various agents such as ritualistic practices, family expectations, cultural orientations and even dogmatic factors contribute to the benchmarking of gender aspects as presented in Asian literature. Within this given scope, contributors can explore relevant notions in demonstrating the origins, developments and evolving aspects of cultural standards and how they act men and women as individuals in the familial, social and vocational contexts.

We welcome submissions that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

• Traditional benchmarking and their influence on fictional male and female characters
• Comparative studies of men and women in different Asian literatures
• Legendary characters and rebirths in contemporary narratives
• The adaptation and evolution of Asian men and women in different literary genres
• Gendering of family and social obligations in Asian literary works
• Maternal and paternal roles in works that feature Asian families 
• Gender politics in Asian narratives and their significance
• The literary voices of men and women in the Asian contexts
• Gendered rituals and conventions in modern Asian literature
• The fluidity of gender in Asian literary theorization and framework

The volume will be jointly edited by Dr Kelly Kar Yue Chan (Hong Kong Metropolitan University) and Dr Chi Sum Garfield Lau (Hong Kong Metropolitan University). Some of the edited books of Dr Chan and Dr Lau include Conjugal Relationships in Chinese Culture: Sino / Western Discourse and Aesthetics on Marriage (Springer, 2023) and The Poetics of Grief and Melancholy in East-West Conflicts and Reconciliations (Springer, 2024).

Interested authors should send an abstract (no more than 250 words) and a short biography (no more than 150 words) to the editors ( [email protected] and [email protected] ) by 25 November 2024 . Authors will be notified of the decision made by the editorial team by 30 December 2024. All received abstracts and papers will go through the process of internal review and language editing before they are included in the proposal to potential publishers.
