essay on my dream city dubai

Published: Tue 14 Oct 2014, 11:06 PM

Last updated: Tue 7 Apr 2015, 9:41 PM

EVERYONE HERE is so nice, Mom!” my son stated in his trademark pragmatic manner, as we walked through the maze known to ordinary mortals as the Dubai Mall, one post-Iftar evening in Dubai this July.

As my 10-year-old nephew — on his debut trip to Dubai — moved his head, vigorously, in agreement, I smiled faintly, while trying to shift bags full of stuff I-would-never-wear from one arm to another. Over the years, I have seen Dubai bloom, going from strength to strength, in all its glitzy glory, and there seems to be no end to where the tiny emirate with the tallest tower in the world would go in its single-minded pursuit of splendour. Love it or hate it, Dubai dazzles, and there are no ifs and buts about it.

Dubai — the city of bling, gold souks, Lamborghinis, skyscrapers, faux/real islands, Chanel, beautiful women, enigmatic billionaires, Tiffany, and many burjs, one towering over the other. The city is vibrant and dynamic, and there are no two opinions about that.

What I find fascinating is Dubai is truly unapologetically…Dubai! It is one city that attracts, in equal numbers, low-wage workers, professionals, businessmen, shoppers, film-stars who have made it and starlets who would do anything to make it, and tourists, of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and bank accounts. Everyone and his aunt visit Dubai. Period. There’s something for everyone, and yes, that’s what the two children with me totally high-fived Dubai for. Dubai rocks!

Yet, there’s this quiet feeling of alienation one feels in Dubai, and while that may be true of any place that is just a tourism-shopping stop, it becomes, sort of, heightened in Dubai. As I sat on the balcony of my hotel room, at the Jumeirah Beach Residences, past midnight, Dubai incandescent with lights from nearby buildings, distant skyscrapers, humming motor-boats, I couldn’t shrug off the feeling of being in a city that lacks warmth, notwithstanding the stifling heat accentuated by the constant July humidity. The residents of Dubai will have a different take on this, I’m certain, but for someone like me, it’s a recurring thought. I mean a place that attracts people from all corners of the world, which provides you with anything you wish, or your body craves for.

The 4,114 km-radiused, with a population of almost 2.1 (every second person is an expatriate), the most popular Middle Eastern metropolis is a city like no other. It may not boast of a rich history, but it sure has global participation in its enrichment, one cultural event at a time. It may not have a film industry to speak much of, but it certainly hosts the biggest stars of Hollywood, Europe and India as its special guests more often than one can count the number of celebrities at the Festival De Cannes 2014.

It may have started with nothing but dunes surrounding it, but today it has some of the most spectacular buildings any important city could boast of: Burj Khalifa, Dubai Towers, Anara Tower, Crescent Moon Tower, to name a few. It may not open its doors to refugees from countries in turmoil, but it does offer them aid and provides a safe and regulated system of employment from the hourly-wage-earners to the millionaire stockbrokers. Its government may remain neutral to the conflicts in its neigbhourhood, but under the almost flawless leadership of its very dynamic rulers, Dubai is a heaven for its citizens.

Dubai is…safe. For all who visit it, or live there. During my midnight walks with the kids, or a grouchy trip to the 24-hour supermarket, I felt as I always do in Dubai, that I was walking in my garden. There’s no fear of misbehaviour or harassment. And if there is even a doubt, yell for the police. Thank the Lord for the omnipresent shurtah!

Exhilarated and exhausted after our daylong trip from the Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi (where my son took seven rides on the Formula Rossa!), as I packed our last-minute shopping in our overstuffed bags, my son, yawning, mumbled, “Dubai’s very cool, Mom. Let’s be back soon!”

My trip to Dubai essay

There is no doubt that many people, especially young people, dream of visiting Dubai and spending happy times there. This is what I did on my last trip.

In the last summer vacation, my family and I were able to go to Dubai for tourism and enjoy its famous tourist attractions, such as the famous Burj Khalifa, which I found absolutely wonderful, and as described perfectly, an entire city inside the building.

It has an amazing view of the desert and the neighboring buildings, and it was built through amazing modern urban engineering.

I also enjoyed a lot of sitting and wandering at the famous Dubai Musical Fountain. This surprised me and the greatness of the wonderful designs and colors that come out with the water from the lights and the surrounding atmosphere, everything was designed to be perfect.

I also liked many other areas that I enjoyed riding boats in, such as Dubai Creek. Or wandering on foot in the Seef area, which reflects the culture and civilization of the people of Dubai.

I also loved in my trip a specific spot which is the walkway in JBR, I liked the atmosphere there very much and I was able to get to know other people from different countries.

The entire trip was perfect and unique and I could see many famous personalities, football or tennis players, or many famous political figures.

In Dubai, you can’t take your eyes off even a little bit. There is always something unique going on around you whether you see the luxury cars, or the beautiful and unique situations that happen constantly around you.

It was a really great trip and I hope to repeat it again.

Essay on Dubai trip

I just got back from my Dubai trip before the start of the new semester. I enjoyed spending my summer vacation on Dubai’s beaches, picnicking in malls, skyscrapers, and seeing many world-famous shows.

Enjoy a lot of wandering in old Dubai and riding the local boats that preserve their traditional shape, which are made by hand. I was very surprised by the way it works, and I learned that it has been used for many years in trade and hunting.

The captain of the boat told me that his family had been in this profession for 80 years. They were in search of pearls and that this was one of the trades available to them and is still going on now.

As soon as we finished this water continuation, we arrived at the market and I found the smell pervading the place, for different and varied spices, all of them are fresh, so they have a distinctive smell and taste.

After buying some spices and food, we went and prepared some food at home to enjoy and try these ingredients for a fish meal. It was really amazing and had a much different flavor than what we are used to.

I certainly did not miss the rest of the famous landmarks that set records in height, sophistication and engineering design, such as the Burj Khalifa and other amazing buildings. It was an enjoyable trip that I enjoyed a lot and I hope to repeat it again soon.

From dream to reality: Developing sustainable smart cities in the United Arab Emirates featured image

The dream of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to develop smart cities stemmed from the government’s Vision 2021, an ambitious plan to make the UAE amongst the best countries in the world. By building smart cities, the UAE would clear the path to achieve one of Vision 2021’s six national priorities: that of a sustainable environment and infrastructure.

Beyond intelligent: UAE’s first sustainable smart city

ITU defines a smart sustainable city as “an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental as well as cultural aspects.” This definition is very well reflected in the smart city plans and projects of the UAE.

Launched almost a decade ago, Masdar City in the emirate of Abu Dhabi is the first smart sustainable city in the UAE, and among the first in the Middle East region. Masdar City uses a combination of technological innovations in architecture and energy, such as solar power, to run. It has installed low-flow showers and smart water metres designed to help reduce water wastage. The architecture of Masdar City ensures that streets and houses are cooler than they would be otherwise.

Smart, sustainable cities start to spread

In October 2013, H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai announced a project to transform Dubai into a smart city. Later, in March 2014, Sheikh Mohammed launched a strategy laying out the plan for this transformation, entitled Dubai Plan 2021. In fact, in 2016, ITU covered Dubai as an inspiring case study worthy of being emulated by other cities aiming to transform themselves into smart cities.

Dubai has gone on to develop several smart cities. There is The Sustainable City , which is already up and running, while Dubai South and Desert Rose City are in planning or construction stages. The Sustainable City is a mixed-use township and runs on solar energy produced by solar panels that double as shades in the parking area. The residences, offices and other properties are equipped with energy-saving appliances. Desert Rose City is another mixed-use property that will be constructed in the shape of the desert rose flower. It will run on renewable energy that it plans to produce locally, as well as benefit from a waste recycling facility.

Promoting innovation at the national level

Leveraging the technological advancements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, developers of smart sustainable cities have found support in the launch of various federal-level strategies that promote the use of blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, smart mobility and renewable energy. This kind of national level support and strategic alignment is vital in the development of any smart, sustainable city.

The UAE observes February as the month of innovation and holds several events including hackathons to promote innovation and use data to seek intelligent technology-based solutions in the areas of developing smart sustainable cities, environmental conservation, healthcare, space, education and digital transformation.

Some of the winning ideas of the 2019 hackathon were:

  • The LIFT OFF: An app which augments cameras with artificial intelligence to evaluate a person’s health by examining the face, eyes, nose and face colour
  • The KHADER project, which aims to help preserve the environment through the use of artificial intelligence in waste recycling operations.
  • The FAST RESPONSE project, which involves a remotely-controlled aircraft equipped with special sensors linked to an app. In case of a fire, the app will inform authorities and guide them to the location and inform them about human casualties, if any.
  • The SO CALLED ENGINEERS project, under which a smart helmet informs authorities in case its user has a road accident. The helmet transmits the condition of the injured, time and location of the accident.

The winners of the 2020 edition of the UAE hackathon completed two months of training to convert their ideas into successful business models. In addition to producing solutions, the teams also test their prototypes with users to receive feedback.

Public-private partnerships: Key to smart digital transformation

The UAE Government has signed several agreements with countries and companies in order to benefit from the sharing of knowledge and expertise in the areas of new technologies that will help it achieve its smart transformation goal.

In June 2020, the Abu Dhabi Digital Authority (ADDA) signed an MoU with Intel technology company to accelerate digital transformation in Abu Dhabi. ADDA aims to benefit from Intel’s expertise in the field of innovative technology. Intel will conduct workshops in blockchain technologies, augmented reality, video analytics, Internet of Things, AI and workplace transformation. New initiatives and projects associated with innovation and future technologies will be implemented, propelling Abu Dhabi to become a smart city.

Early this year, another MoU was signed between Al Ain City Municipality and AI company Saal to collaborate on researching and developing innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) and data analysis to support the smart city initiative and enhance the quality of life for Al Ain residents . Al Ain City Municipality aims to improve the level of services in the city while building a sustainable infrastructure, maintaining public facilities and the general aesthetics, and offering exceptional services in consultation with the community.

Last year, Smart Dubai signed an agreement with Huawei under which Huawei will work towards the development of Dubai Municipality’s digital capabilities by providing the support required to launch unique smart services and incorporating the latest innovative technologies in the field of ICT. A Center of the Future is also planned for development. This so-called “smart center” will be powered by Huawei’s Wi-Fi 6 technology and AI solutions, enabling Dubai Municipality to deliver a superior level of automated experience to its citizens and customers.

Speeding towards the smart city future

Perhaps among the most exciting smart city developments happening in the UAE is the construction of a high-speed Hyperloop transportation service between the emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Using advanced electromagnetic technology, the Hyperloop would be an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation with the ability to cover a distance of 150 kilometres in just 12 minutes.

Innovative projects like the Hyperloop make it easy to understand why Dubai and Abu Dhabi led the Middle East and North Africa region in the 2019 IMD Smart City Index , which ranks 102 cities worldwide. This recognition reflects the commitment and the progress the United Arab Emirates has made by laying down the digital infrastructure for developing into a smart nation. Now, there’s no looking back.
