CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION: AN ILLUSTRATED CASE STUDY APPROACH is todayâs most modern, complete, visual, and âreality-basedâ guide to criminal investigation. Unlike other texts, it presents both written cases and a full sequence of photos for each case, enabling students to view crime scenes from top-to-bottom, and realistically apply investigative concepts. The authors first introduce core investigative tools, demonstrating the proper use of law and evidence gathering techniques. Next, they present detailed methods for investigating a wide spectrum of specific crimes. Each type of crime is illuminated with a detailed case study and a complete series of properly-sequenced crime scene photos. This textâs âno punches pulledâ coverage helps students understand exactly what to expect in the field. It also contains detailed coverage of many crimes that other books overlook, including street gang crime, and crimes involving explosives.

A book which has it all in criminal investigation. I pre-ordered the book and it arrived fairly quickly at my house. The book truly is different from the rest as it states. First the text is very relevant to criminal investigations, coupled with a total of over 600 pictures. The book displays 10 or 11 photos of one crime scene so me as the student, I can see the crime scene in its entirety from first responder to investigator. The photos do a great job in explaining the text, unlike the few other books I've bought. The difference I see in this book and the others I have is the number of photos of one crime scene. Some books may show one graphic photo to illustrate a gunshot wound to the head or a graphic photo of a suicide. This book not only has more of that, but also shows you the entire crime scene of a murder. So as a student I was able to see the body and the evidence to go along with it (11 photos) of one crime scene. No book has anything like that. The homicide chapter had almost 80 pictures and several cases to illustrate various types of homicides. This book also goes over gang crime investigations, which is different by far. Explains how to approach investigations involving gangs (Intel and such). Just an overall great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the first ebook I ever purchased. It took some getting used to not having the actual book right in front of me. I do prefer the book for reading, but the ebook turned out to be much more useful when I needed to look something up, because it has a search tool that helps you search the text for keywords.

I actually needed this book for an online college course that I am currently taking. The university bookstore carried the wrong book. So, I was notified by the professor that I needed this book instead. Now, I can finally start working on my homework for this class.

Given that too many people still believe lie detectors are reliable, I was very pleased to see that on page 13 we are told that the polygraph is "junk science." However, page 48 mentions polygraph technicians as members of the investigative team. On page 151 the book goes into a detailed explanation of how the polygraph works. The book also describes neurolinguistic programming, interrogation profiling (based on criminal profiling), and voice stress analysis as if they were legitimate, science-based techniques, when in reality they're considered pseudoscience. The book fails to mention that in 2009 the National Academy of Science wrote "the uncertainties associated with bloodstain splatter analysis are enormous." Other subjects covered are very interesting. For example, it's eye-opening to learn the specific steps of how a crime scene must be secured and searched. I've only read up to chapter 5. I'll update my review once I've finished the entire book. REVIEW CONTINUED: It needs professional editing for clarity, typos, and syntax. Example: on page 253, in regards to justified or excusable homicides it states that âthese include situations in which civilians kill persons while committing a felony...â This makes it sound as if the civilians are the ones committing the felonies. It needs to be updated. The copyright is from 2014, but the material seems to be from 2012. Page 510: it states that morphine âis the most effective and powerful painkiller known to the medical professionâ, when in fact that is fentanyl. Page 531: it highlights the Earth Liberation Front as âa top concernâ for the FBI âdue to the ELFâs recent arson attacks on construction sites...â The ELFâs attacks practically stopped in 2012. It uses the word âliterallyâ when it means to say âfiguratively.â An academic work should not do this. It is rather alarmist about âsleeper cellsâ, and the only source it cites is a CBS news story from 2008.
