By The Learning Network encyclopedic \ ɪnˌsaɪkləˈpidɪk \ adjective: broad in scope or content; comprehensive Listen to the pronunciation. The word encyclopedic has appeared in 72 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on June 12 in “ No Cars, No Crowds: 100 Years of Solitude in the New Mexico Wilderness ” by Elaine Glusac: Riding from a forest trailhead into the wilderness, we immediately flushed out two coyotes. Mr. Law identified mountain lion prints in sandy washes, wolf scat on the trail and a pine tree denuded of its bark by bears searching for the acorns that woodpeckers had stashed there. Traversing climates from alpine to desert, we encountered intriguing caves and naturally stacked boulders seemingly poised to tumble and sure to be social media selfie magnets were they more accessible. “That’s how a lot of the Gila is, you ride up into desert and down to river bottoms and dense pine woods,” said Mr. Law, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the Gila’s flora and fauna has been honed by putting in over 1,000 miles in the saddle each year. A Falcon woman convicted of breaching the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, during the riot to disrupt the results of the 2020 presidential election was sentenced Monday to one year of probation. Rebecca Lavrenz, known as “J6 Praying Grandma” on social media, will also be required to pay a $103,000 fine and $500 in restitution , a spokesperson for the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., said. She was convicted of four misdemeanor counts for entering the Capitol and conducting disorderly conduct inside. In a Facebook post before the ruling, the 72-year-old great-grandmother, who operates a bed and breakfast northeast of Colorado Springs, offered no apologies for her crimes and said she felt the judge’s decision was in God’s hands. “I am confident that his sentence will be what God, the Highest Judge, thinks is best to wake up our country,” Lavrenz wrote Monday morning. “Trusting and obeying God is my assignment for today.” Lavrenz’s defense attorneys requested a one-year probation, no fine and no restitution, in court documents filed last week. They argued that she was a retired, first-time offender with “countless ties” to her community and commitments to her extended family. Her attorneys said that Lavrenz’s conduct Jan. 6 was peaceful and nonviolent, that she caused no property damage and that she complied with the conditions of her release over the past two years after she was arrested in 2022, according to court documents. Federal prosecutors requested the judge order Lavrenz to serve 10 months in prison, followed by a year of supervised release and 60 hours of community service. The sentence was justified, prosecutors wrote in a letter to the judge filed last week, because Lavrenz has been “one of the loudest public voices calling the prosecution of January 6 riots a corrupt exercise.” “Although Lavrenz certainly has a First Amendment right to publicly espouse her views, her unrepentant promotion of the riot is powerful evidence that she continues to pose a threat to future acts of political violence like that which engulfed the nation on January 6,” they continued. ☀️ READ MOREFour-day school weeks have exploded across colorado districts — and are setting students back, with rising rents, theater companies are renting a denver office space to rehearse, after years of dings, coal-fired powerhouse tri-state now noted for switch to solar, wind. Prosecutors also asked the judge to impose a “substantial fine,” citing Lavrenz’s fundraising efforts after her trial. Lavrenz used her participation in the Jan. 6 riot and her convictions to raise more than $230,000 through online fundraising accounts and sought celebrity status based on her criminal conduct, prosecutors wrote. She also gave at least two dozen media interviews, where she continued her fundraising, questioned the fairness of her trial and showed no remorse for her criminal conduct. Her lawyers argued Lavrenz was not profiting from her crime and that all profits were going toward her legal defense, which have already exceeded six figures and her appeal will cost “additional tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars” over the next year, court documents said. Lavrenz was arrested Dec. 19, 2022, in Denver after tipsters alerted the FBI she was part of the crowd who breached the Capitol. She told federal authorities that she spent 10 minutes inside the Capitol, according to court documents. Investigators confirmed her account by reviewing surveillance footage that shows Lavrenz in a red scarf and white hat among the crowd of hundreds of rioters illegally entering and picketing inside the building. At The Sun, she has covered wildfires, criminal justice, the environment,... More by Olivia Prentzel A Word, Please: When recasting a sentence isn’t always possibleWe’ve all been there: You ask someone a direct question and they answer a question you didn’t ask. Like you want to know whether you should turn left or right on Maple Street and they say, “Yup, Maple Street’s just a few blocks that-a-away.” Well, copy editors have a version of that. We ask a colleague about a particularly tricky passage: “Would you put a comma in this sentence?” or “Would you put a hyphen here” or “Should the verb agree with this word or that word?” and the answer we get, over and over, is: “Recast the sentence.” Never mind that sometimes you can’t recast the sentence. Perhaps it’s a quotation, which ethics forbid you to revise. Or maybe you were asking as more of a hypothetical to understand some nuance of commas or hyphens or subject-verb agreement. The answer you get is still, “Recast the sentence,” often followed by a detailed example of how the person answering the question would recast it. A rather extreme example of this appeared in the Ask the Editor section of the Associated Press online stylebook a while back. A subscriber wrote: “Please, no recasts. I cannot find a definitive answer anywhere on the planet. Keep in mind these represent directly quoted utterances. Do we keep or toss the comma after France’s, New York’s and 2001’s? ‘Alice said, “Paris, France’s, sights are breathtaking!”’ ‘Gov. Cuomo said, “Albany, New York’s, crime rate has risen exponentially.”’ ‘Joe said, “September 11, 2001’s, tragic events will be indelibly etched in the minds of everyone.”’” These are interesting questions because they create a conflict between comma rules and good taste. Comma rules say that when you refer to a city followed by its state, then continue the sentence, the state is followed by a comma. For instance: Albany, New York, is lovely this time of year. The same rule applies to countries after cities: Paris, France, is home to the Eiffel Tower. And the same rule applies to years after dates: September 11, 2001, was a tragic day. A Word, Please: The pretense-pretext distinction, if there is oneGrammar expert June Casagrande has always wondered if pretense and pretext are interchangeable. According to the dictionary, they often are. Aug. 1, 2024 But sometimes, especially in casual speech, people can make New York, France or 2001 possessive. New York’s weather is nice this time of year. France’s president will visit. 2001’s events affected us all. This is almost never a problem, but when the rules call for a comma in the same spot, things get unsightly and a little weird. Notice how, in “Paris, France’s, sights are breathtaking,” it sounds more like you’re talking about France’s sights than Paris’. A similar effect is true for the other two sentences. Rulebooks like the Associate Press Stylebook don’t tell you what to do in these situations. So subscribers sometimes just pose the question to AP’s editors on the stylebook’s website. Usually, this works out great. But not this time. “Really, truly, recasting is the thing to do,” replied an editor. “Just because someone utters a quote doesn’t mean, in most cases, that you have to use the quote in full or in part. There’s not a definitive style for this and many other questions because Style Rule No. 1 would be: Recast, rephrase, rewrite! So, we don’t have a definitive answer either. I could make something up, but that’s not wise or helpful. Sorry!” In my opinion, the editor should have recast that answer as: “We don’t have a rule. You’re on your own.” That would be helpful because when there’s no rule, editors are free to make judgment calls. It’s part of the job. But being told to recast something we can’t recast, after explaining as much ... not helpful. What would I do in this situation? I’d probably keep the comma after 2001’s, New York’s and France’s. It hews more closely to the known guidelines and, because there’s no rule for this exact situation, it can’t be wrong. When the A’s acquired Muller, he was recognized as a top prospect by the Braves. Muller used to be a starter and showed solid promise following pitching deep into games. Muller also earned himself the Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2015. Due to this, the A’s had faith in Muller, but unfortunately, in 2022, he recorded an ERA of 8.03. The 2023 season wasn’t revamped, with a 1-5 record and an ERA of 7.60. This season, his ERA has dropped to 4.22. Following his unsuccessful 2022 season, he was sent down to the minors. But being in Triple-A didn’t allow him to prosper. He sported a 7.26 ERA across 13 starts. The A’s continued to keep him in the reliever role in the majors as they had their hands tied. He’s successfully improved his ERA this season, even with going on the IL with left shoulder tendinitis on May 30th. In addition, he had a promising walk rate of 5.1 %. But aside from this, he’s had his struggles with giving up home runs. As well, he needed much work to improve his velocity. The reason behind Muller’s designation, aside from his struggles, is also due to his out-of-options dilemma with his contract. But what had also attracted the A’s to Muller was that he has experience as a lefty. Overall, keeping him long-term was not something that the A’s could afford to do—especially considering that he hasn’t improved enough for them to consider him a strong enough piece in the bullpen. With Muller being DFA’d, starting pitcher Joe Boyle has been recalled, and Ross Stripling has taken over in the pen.
