In 2001, analyze & realize was founded by the physician Christof Jaenicke and botanist Dr. Joerg Gruenwald, emerging from their previous independent consulting firms. Human clinical trials have been conducted in our study center since the inception of our company.

At first, medicinal consulting with regards to herbal medicinal substances was the main focus, specifically the compilation of CTDs for traditional herbal medicinal products. Later, consulting was very successfully expanded towards functional foods, food supplements, food for special medical purposes, and medical devices. In particular, our vast expertise in the areas of Health Claims and Novel Food makes a&r one of the leading consultancies in the EU.

What Is Research and Development (R&D)?

  • R&D investment is crucial for high-growth companies, driving innovation and competitive advantage.
  • Alphabet's 20% rule showcases a successful R&D strategy, leading to products like Gmail.
  • Investors should monitor R&D expenses since they can indicate the potential for future growth and profits.
  • Motley Fool Issues Rare “All In” Buy Alert

Research and development activities, known as R&D, are centered on discovering and creating new products or services for a company. Most companies have R&D expenses, but technology and pharmaceutical companies tend to spend especially large amounts to stay ahead of the competition. A major advantage of R&D expenses is their ability to be used to reduce taxes.

If you want to invest in high-growth companies, you'll need to understand how R&D works, the common types of R&D, and its importance to investors.

Scientists working on research and development in a lab.

What is it?

What is r&d.

Governments and corporations incur R&D expenses. Corporations typically invest the funds in a more focused way, with a targeted return on investment (ROI) ; governments create grants and other ways for third parties to receive tax dollars for R&D. We'll focus more on the corporate side of things.

R&D is necessarily a long-term, focused expense. The types of products and services created in R&D departments often take years to develop. Corporations must balance the long time frame in R&D with the prospects of generating a positive ROI from the expenditure.

Measuring ROI is common for capital expenditures, such as buying new equipment or building a new office, but less common for operating expenses. With capital expenditures, the calculation is easy: You figure out how much cash flow you'll generate from the new investment and make sure the cash outflow is offset by the new profits.

With R&D, it's not quite as clear since some or most of the funds you invest will almost certainly be worthless. To paraphrase Thomas Edison, you don't fail; you just find thousands of things that don't work.

Alphabet 's ( GOOG -0.92% )( GOOGL -0.89% ) 20% rule is a good example of using R&D to maximize profits. All Google employees are allowed to work on personal projects one day a week. Products as diverse as Google News, Wear OS, and Gmail came from Alphabet's 20% rule. The R&D expense was obviously profitable for the company, but there was no way for Alphabet to determine the potential returns.

A good rule of thumb for corporations is the use of return on research capital, which is calculated by dividing the previous year's R&D by the current year's gross profit . The formula isn't perfect, but it's a widely accepted method of calculating ROI for R&D.

Types of R&D

Research and development trickles down into everyday products through several different models. Let's go over the most popular.

Corporate departments

Large corporations have departments staffed with engineers and industrial scientists who do research on various levels of the R&D process to develop new products and improve existing ones. The most common example is pharmaceutical companies developing and testing new drugs.

Start-ups and incubators

While large corporations may dedicate a department to R&D, some start-ups dedicate the whole company to R&D. For instance, companies with no revenue might spend all their money and time on developing self-driving cars, new cancer drugs , or even a better razor.

R&D-focused start-ups often work with incubators or accelerators. Both are run by venture capital firms and work with start-ups at different stages of the business.

Typically, incubators work with start-ups that are mostly still an idea. They help the company develop the idea, plan a business model, and create a product. Accelerators work with start-ups with an established product and help them bring the product to market and scale the business. The end game for both types is often a merger with a bigger company.

Mergers and acquisitions

The problem with R&D at a big corporation is that it's R&D at a big corporation. It's hard to be innovative when you work a 9-to-5 job, report to a middle manager, and get an annual 2% cost-of-living raise. So, when big corporate R&D departments aren't cutting it, the big corporation will often look to acquire a small, innovative company.

This process is more common than you'd think. The Android OS was originally developed by a start-up acquired by Google to get into mobile. Microsoft ( MSFT 0.09% ) acquired Hotmail and 86-DOS. eBay ( EBAY 0.63% ) acquired PayPal ( PYPL -0.62% ) and then spun it off. Google acquired YouTube. Disney ( DIS -0.96% ) acquired Pixar, ABC, ESPN, and Lucasfilm.

In addition to being a last resort for bigger companies that haven't been able to develop their own products, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) offer a much clearer ROI proposition. The corporation knows the exact amount it must spend to acquire the company and then can determine the cash flows from the acquisition once it's complete.

Its importance

Why is r&d important.

R&D is a vital expense for companies to continue growing and fending off competitors. Here are a few key reasons for a company to keep healthy R&D expenses going:

Competitive advantage

Developing strong competitive advantages is key to long-term profitability. This means constantly developing newer and better products that cost less to produce. Some of the biggest R&D spenders in the U.S. are companies such as Alphabet, Meta ( META -0.39% ), Microsoft, and Apple ( AAPL 0.37% ), which spend billions on R&D each year.

Let's look at Amazon ( AMZN -1.36% ) and the now-defunct Borders, both once flourishing general interest bookstores and almost direct competitors. Consider what the two bookstores look like now for someone who invested in them 25 years ago.

Amazon began as an online bookstore but now houses a multibillion-dollar cloud services business. It has profitable funnels to its Prime program, using tablets, e-readers, original TV series and movies, digital media players, and e-book subscription services. It also has voice-activated products, like Alexa, that wouldn't have existed if it hadn't invested in R&D over the past two decades.

Borders, meanwhile, has been out of business for a decade. A big reason Amazon still exists, and Borders doesn't, is that Amazon leveraged its R&D program.

Productivity advantages

R&D isn't focused only on developing new products. There is also substantial investment that goes into determining better ways to produce existing products. The faster and cheaper you can churn out widgets, the more money you'll make from each one -- and the less you can eventually charge for them, earning a competitive advantage .

New revenue sources

Every product has a life cycle. While some stay in the growth phase longer than others, there will eventually be an end to outsize profits. This is especially true for the pharmaceutical industry .

Companies spend billions developing and improving drugs, which then have a finite life cycle until the recipe is made available for everyone else to reproduce. If pharma companies weren't constantly investing in R&D, they would eventually run out of revenue sources.

Tax advantages

In addition to writing off R&D expenses on the income statement, many jurisdictions offer tax benefits for engaging in specific types of R&D.

Nissan's six-feature safety suite uses cameras, radars, and sonar for 360-degree protection.

QuickTakes:

  • Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes driver-assistance and crash-avoidance tech
  • Most Nissan vehicles have Nissan Safety Shield
  • Nissan offers more safety features

Nissan USA says it offers all-around protection on its vehicles, and it accomplishes this with a suite of safety products Nissan Safety Shield 360. The six-feature system is robust with uplevel features you often only see in luxury vehicles.

Nissan Safety Shield 360 Includes Driver-Assistance and Crash-Avoidance Tech

Using cameras, radar, and sonar technology, Nissan Safety Shield 360 offers six advanced features that monitor the areas surrounding the vehicle. It can either alert the driver to potential problems or actively intervene in a potential crash situation.

The first feature, automatic emergency braking , is standard on 90% of all light-duty vehicles currently on the road. The system provides both audio and visual alerts if it detects a possible collision with another vehicle or pedestrian. It can also apply the brakes.

The second and third features are also frequently included on standard safety suites in most daily drivers. These are high-beam assist, which turns down your high-beams when it senses oncoming traffic, and lane-departure warning, which issues an alert if it detects the vehicle is leaving its lane.

Three more features are more on the premium side of the spectrum and include blind-spot monitoring , rear cross-traffic alert , and automatic rear braking. The first two features will issue visual and audible alerts as another vehicle enters your blind spots, and the latter feature will apply the brakes if it detects an object behind the vehicle and the driver fails to stop in time to prevent a collision.

Most Nissan Vehicles Have Nissan Safety Shield

Nissan includes Safety Shield 360 on almost every vehicle it builds, from the compact Versa SV at about $21,000 to the full-size Armada SUV at about $52,000. This includes both of its pickup trucks, the Frontier and the Titan.

The only vehicles that do not come with Safety Shield 360 include the two most basic Versas in the S trim, with both manual and automatic transmissions, as well as the GT-R. Since Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on all the vehicles that have it, there is no additional cost.

Nissan Offers More Safety Features

In addition to Nissan Safety Shield 360, there are two other notable safety features available on Nissan vehicles. The first is a 360-degree monitor that Nissan calls the Around View Monitor.

This includes a four-camera system that gives both a rear view and a bird's-eye view of the vehicle. This will help drivers see all the obstacles they might encounter when moving the vehicle forward or backward. While the Around View Monitor isn't available on the Versa, it is offered on every other Nissan model.

The second available safety feature is ProPilot Assist , which is a hands-on driver assist system that combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to help modulate the vehicle's speed. This helps keep the vehicle a safe distance from the one in front of it as well as ensuring that the vehicle stays within its lane lines.

This feature is available in the Altima , Leaf , Rogue Sport, Rogue , and Pathfinder . Nissan also offers a 2.0 version of ProPilot Assist in the Ariya that is a hands-free highway driver-assist system. While the 2.0 system won't allow the vehicle to change lanes hands free, it will use steering assist to help guide drivers into a new lane as long as they have their hands lightly on the wheel.

All vehicle pricing includes MSRP plus destination charges (set at the time of publication), and will be rounded to the nearest thousand.

Return on Research Capital (RORC): What it is, How it Works

a&r research capital

What Is Return on Research Capital?

Return on research capital (RORC) is a calculation used to assess the revenue a company brings in as a result of expenditures made on research and development (R&D) activities.

Return on research capital is a component of productivity and growth since research and development is one of the ways companies develop new products and services for sale. This metric is commonly used in industries that rely heavily on R&D, such as the pharmaceutical industry .

Key Takeaways

  • Return on research capital (RORC) measures a firm's revenues generated from R&D activities.
  • Return on research capital (RORC) is calculated by dividing current gross profits by the prior year's R&D expenditures.
  • It usually takes more than one year to realize the return on R&D; sometimes, it may be realized over more than one year.

Understanding Return on Research Capital (RORC)

Companies face an opportunity cost when examining the use of their funds. They can spend money on tangible assets, real estate, capital improvements , or they can invest in R&D. Investments made in research may take many years before tangible results are realized, and the return typically varies between industries and even within sectors of a particular industry.

In theory, if an enterprise has promising prospects, it should forgo returning capital and plow back retained earnings into the business. Investing in research and development is one popular method to develop future innovation capabilities. Analysts and investors monitor R&D levels to gauge future competitiveness. Many industries have come under fire for shrinking R&D budgets, while stock buybacks are at all-time highs.

Research and development initiatives are very difficult to manage since the defining feature of the research is that the researchers do not know in advance exactly how to accomplish any given desired result. In larger businesses, monitoring R&D spending presents a problem. As a result, higher R&D spending does not guarantee more creativity, higher profits, or more market share. Thus, at times, managers struggle to effectively prove the return on research capital.

Recent breakthroughs in big data, analytics, and enterprise risk management methodologies help demonstrate, with evidence-based proof, that investment in research and development adds enterprise value. In business, money follows success. As business leaders further demonstrate return on research efforts, budgets will grow as well.

Large and complex research and development projects may not produce profits for years after completion, rendering this analysis faulty.

Example of Return on Research Capital

The return on research capital is the amount of profit earned for each dollar spent on research and development within a given period (usually a year). It is calculated as current gross profits (typically found on the current year's income statement) divided by the prior year's R&D expenses.

The prior year's R&D expenses are used because the payoff is not typically realized immediately. Rather, it is often realized at some future point in time. For example, Rx Pharmaceutical Company earned $100 million in gross profits in 2021. In the previous year, it spent $50 million on research and development. It's return on research capital is $2 ($100 million / $50 million). So for every $1 spent on research and development, the company earned $2 in gross profit. One can reasonably assume that higher returns mean that the company has spent wisely in terms of research and development and is reaping the rewards from its efforts.

What Is Return on Research Capital (RORC) Used For?

Return on research capital (RORC) is a measure of what revenue a corporation has earned as a result of it having spent money on research and development (R&D). The metric is used to assess the effectiveness of R&D.

What Is the Price-to-Research Ratio (PRR)?

The price-to-research ratio (PRR) measures the connection between a company's market capitalization and its research and development (R&D) spending. It can be used to compare different companies' R&D spending. It is calculated by dividing a company's market capitalization by what it spent on R&D over the previous 12 months. A PRR between five and ten is a preferred number, as it suggests a company is redirecting current profits into research and development, which should positively impact long-term future returns.

What Sectors' Profits Are Most Influenced By R&D Spending?

Many sectors and corporations benefit from spending on research & development, but technology and pharmaceuticals are among the industries that benefit the most. Pharmaceuticals. in particular, are dependent on research and development in the creation, testing, and manufacturing of drugs and other medicines.

That’s not so bad, there’s dummy copy to the rescue. But worse, what if the fish doesn’t fit in the can, the foot’s to big for the boot? Or to small? To short sentences, to many headings, images too large for the proposed design, or too small.

A client that’s unhappy for a reason is a problem, a client that’s unhappy though he or her can’t quite put a finger on it is worse. Or they fit in but it looks iffy for reasons the folks in the meeting can’t quite tell right now, but they’re unhappy, somehow.
