Doctoral Studies comprise theoretical courses, conducted in accordance with the curriculum, and scientific research. Upon finishing the Doctoral Studies, students have to defend Doctoral Thesis.

Duration of the full-time Doctoral Studies is four years. The part-time Doctoral Studies last for five years. The Doctoral Studies are conducted for 11 months p.a. in accordance with the Doctoral Studies schedule for the given academic year. The volume of the entire Doctoral study programme is 192 credit points.

Department of Doctoral Studies

A doctoral degree is the first step to becoming a researcher –  with the assistance of qualified teaching staff, doctoral students acquire the skills required by a new researcher in order to launch an academic career as a member of the teaching staff at a university.

A doctorate is the next step after a master's degree (or what is generally considered the end of your studies) and can increase your competitiveness in the job market. By studying in a doctoral programme, you improve your skills in the academic field and in research, and finish it by defending a thesis. It is possible that you might subsequently wish to pass on your knowledge by joining the teaching staff at RSU. Currently there are more than 200 doctoral students at RSU.

There are currently over 200 doctoral students at our university. All doctoral studies are full-time.

Study programmes and methods

We offer full-time, accredited doctoral study programmes in Medicine, Pharmacy, Sociology, Law, Political Science, Communication Culture & Multimedia, and Pschology.

RSU has joined Europe’s Doctorate Concept and the so-called  Bologna Declaration , in which doctoral education has been mentioned as one of the main work priorities for Europe’s universities. 

The goal of the programmes is to provide interested persons with doctoral study and research opportunities to acquire a PhD. The task of the programme is to prepare a new generation of scientists who would correspond to the requirements of international standards for research and academic work, and to ensure a further support to the economy.

Doctoral studies are available as  full-time studies in the doctoral degree programme (3 years) , in which doctoral students undertake theoretical courses, acquire practical skills and carry out their scientific work independently.

It is possible to obtain state scholarships,  European Social Fund  funding, or a  Marie Curie scholarship  for doctoral studies, as well as attendance at other European universities by taking part in the  ERASMUS Student Exchange Programme .

What are the language requirements?

All students applying for studies in Latvia need to demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the study language, which is usually English. The level of language knowledge must be equal or higher than B2 level according to the  Common European Framework of Reference for Languages  (CEFRL).

Tuition fees in Latvia

Tuition ranges from less than 2,000–10,000 EUR per year in certain bachelor’s degree programmes (3-4 years of studies) to 15,000 EUR per year for a degree in Dentistry (5 years), and up to 25,600 EUR for an Executive MBA degree. A low cost of living is another bonus, making it easy for students to manage all their expenses. Average monthly living expenses amount to €450-700, allowing students to enjoy everything Riga and Latvia have to offer. Moreover, student discounts are offered everywhere from museums to concerts, which is why indulging in culture is one of the most popular pastimes.

Scholarships

Where to stay as a student?

Typically, students choose one of three options – university dormitories, private dormitories, or renting an apartment. With Latvia’s low cost of living, renting your own place is a popular choice and can be the cheapest option if you decide to share it with other students. It’s not difficult to find a modern two-room apartment in Riga for less than €500 a month.

Some universities have their own student dormitories, while others provide assistance with finding housing. For university dormitories, you can expect options from below €100 up to €450 per month, depending on amenities and if you’re sharing the room with other people.

Do not hesitate to ask your university of choice for recommendations.

Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD’s

A scholarship can be received by Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students for studies.

Languages of Instruction

Things to remember.

Average tuition fee ranges from €2,800 to €15,000 per year. For medical or executive business programmes it may cost up to €15,000 per year.

A scholarship holder is required to make his own arrangements for insurance coverage.

Scholarships do not fully cover all the expenses related to your studies.

Tuition fees, living costs, and other expenses must be covered personally.

Travel expenses from a home country to and from Latvia are not covered by Latvian state scholarships.

If student is present in the territory of Latvia for less than 15 calendar days, then no scholarship is provided.

Scholarships for studies

For Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD studies at Latvian higher education institutions

Amount of the scholarships

€500 per month for Bachelor’s (and 2nd level professional higher education students for 1st, 2nd and 3rd study year)

  €600 per month for  Master’s students (and 2nd level professional higher education students starting from 4th study year)

€700 per month for Phd students.

Eligable applicants

Bachelor's students who have already successfully completed at least 1 academic year at any higher education institution (HEI);

Master’s or PhD students from any previous HEI.

Awarded time period

Up to 10 month for Bachelor’s and Master’s students;

Up to 11 months for PhD students

Application conditions

An applicant must choose a study programme at a Latvian HEI prior to the application for a scholarship;

An applicant must receive the confirmation letter for the chosen study programme from the Latvian HEI prior to the application for a scholarship;

An applicant, who is already studying at a Latvian HEI, should also receive the confirmation letter for the present or chosen study programme prior to the application for a scholarship;

The confirmation letter for the chosen study programme from a Latvian HEI needs to be provided by the designated contact person.

1. Copy of a letter by the higher education institution (HEI)

2. Curriculum vitae (CV)

Contact the specified HEI contact person to compile the letter. Use the Europass template.

3. Letter of motivation

Include activities outside studies related to the study fi eld in Latvia or in the home country.

4. Proof of education

Diploma and supplements or transcript of records of the last 2 semesters.

5. Letters of recommendation

Copies of two letters of recommendation from academic staff members, signed within the last 6 months.

Summer Schools

For international students, academic and research staff

Eligible applicants

International students, academic and research staff can apply for the participation in summer schools in Latvia financed by the Latvian state scholarships;

Interested applicants may be from more than 40 eligible countries which have signed an agreement on the co-operation in education and science with Latvia and are other partner countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America;

Eligible summer schools

Candidates may choose from approved summer schools which have received Latvian state scholarships by State Education Development Agency.

Call for applications is open from 1 February to 1 April;

Application is organized by Latvian higher education institutions. More information can be found on the webpages of the selected summer schools;

Financial provisions

The scholarship funding will be transferred to the summer school organizers, no money will be handed out to the Latvian scholarship winners;

The participants of the summer schools must cover travel expenses from the country of origin to the summer school location in Latvia, as well as insurance and visa expenses by themselves;

The necessary documents for the summer schools must be submitted directly to the organizers of the summer schools;

The organizers will inform all the applicants about the results of the scholarship competition.

The admission process to study in Latvia usually encompasses the following steps: 

• Research and identify the university that you want to apply to. Select the study program of your choice.
• Get the copies of all the above mentioned documents. 
• Fill in the online application form and upload the documents. 
• Submit the form and pay the application fee. You will receive the receipt, which will be required for future reference. 
• The institution will then verify and process the application. 
• Prepare and appear for the university exam and interview.
• If you get selected, you get the university offer letter that you need to accept or reject.
• Once you accept the offer letter and make the tuition fee payment,  the study agreement will be sent to you along with the invitation for a residence permit or visa. 
• With this document, you can apply for a visa or residence permit.

Study in Latvia After 12th 

You can easily study in Latvia after successfully clearing your 12th standard examinations. You can apply for undergraduate/bachelor programs in the country. Bachelor’s programs are of three to four years of duration. There are a wide range of courses to choose from, while the degrees are valid throughout Europe and even beyond. 

Some top choices for bachelor’s aspirants include business administration, tourism and hospitality management, computer science, business systems management, optometry, biotechnology and bioengineering, international communication management, and  even cultural and social anthropology. The Master of Arts Administration (M.A.A.) degree at OHIO harnesses the interdisciplinary and creative power of the College of Fine Arts with an innovative curricular approach that merges arts administration knowledge with training in discipline-specific arts management. Focused on training the artist-administrator, the degree is tailored to provide mentorship, experiential and community-engaged learning opportunities, an examination of access and equity in the arts and career readiness.

The Professional Internship in the Arts, along with the final capstone project, is the required, culminating experience of the M.A.A. Tessa Searing went to Nashville, Tenn. and interned with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

“My internship included several projects focused on collections, exhibits, and artifacts,” Searing explained. “I also supported various departments through educational and family programming and events. This internship reminded me that collections are the heart of an organization: curatorial roles make a huge impact on the public that they serve by inspiring empathy, thought, and change through their collections. The MAA program equipped me with the tools to understand collections and their importance. It taught me not only to recognize the impact of the arts, but also to understand that effectively managing and stewarding arts organizations is central to their success."

Luvina Cooley completed her internship with Delaware State Parks.

"In my internship, I've developed and implemented opportunities for volunteers at state parks, specifically around gardening and historical interpretation,” Cooley said. “Managing volunteers requires a deep understanding of who your volunteers are, what their motivations are, and what supports they need to feel connected to their work. The authors I read and the speakers I heard from throughout the M.A.A. program showed me program development requires consistent audience input before, during, and after programs for true success, and long-lasting relationships."

Jacquelyn Stout traveled to Wyoming to intern at the Whitney Western Art Museum, Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

“I was involved in a lot of projects as the Registration and Whitney Western Art Museum Curatorial intern. I led the installation and curation of hanging collections artworks in staff offices, relocated bronze sculptures in preparation for vault renovations, rehoused and organized artworks on paper, proposed and researched objects for removal from the collection, and outfitted and packed crates for artworks going on loan to other museums,” Stout noted. “Key things I had to put into practice during my internship were adaptability and flexibility, ensuring that even when challenges were encountered, the projects were still completed on time. The MAA program gave me the professional training and confidence to adapt on the spot, come up with creative solutions, and interact with all levels of museum management. I feel ready to proceed with a career in the museum field!”

Lalia Riseng worked at the Chautauqua Institution Visual Arts Galleries in New York.

“One key takeaway from my internship, which is something stressed throughout our course work and that I have really seen in practice, is how essential teamwork and collaboration are to an organization,” Riseng said. “Utilizing the talents and strengths of everyone ensures that we continue to support artists and art spaces. The M.A.A. prepared me to think about big picture things, such as mission-driven work and how to improve accessibility and inclusion, while also navigating day-to-day tasks and demands. Although the career search feels daunting, my arts administration coursework and my experience in the field this summer really affirmed that the work we do is so valuable.”

Each summer, arts administration students also choose to partner with local organizations. Hattie Phillips remained in Athens for the summer, working with the historical Mount Zion Black Cultural Center. One part of her internship work with Mount Zion included meeting with the artist, historians, and board directors to help prepare for the highly anticipated unveiling of a new mural at the historic church.

“One of the most surreal moments of my internship was standing on the walkway of bricks outside the historic Mount Zion Baptist Church, waiting in the hot summer sun with over 125 other folks to see [the artist] Wilde’s incredible mural creation. Even in the heat, you could feel the community’s excitement as the curtain was lowered from the mural. What an awesome achievement and moment,” Phillips shared. “The MAA helped solidify my mindset that the work we do together fosters relationships and builds communities. Mount Zion exemplifies this.”

Beatrice Feldbush also interned in the area with the Tecumseh Theater and Commons in Shawnee, Ohio.

“I did my internship with a historic venue amid a major restoration project. I helped create strategic plans that will guide their next steps as they clarify brand identity and messaging, foster relationships with their audience, and continue telling the story of their community,” Feldbush said.

The importance of connecting with the community and sharing stories were stressed throughout Feldbush’s internship.

“I have learned a lot about the power of a well-told story and how organizations can use them to drive meaningful change,” she added. “This change doesn’t just occur at an institutional level, by building public perception of a brand, but at a grassroots community level as well, by inviting our audience to share the platform, uplifting their voices as they join us in telling the story. My internship experience has reiterated a core lesson I have learned time and time again in the MAA program: art is not only the product that an audience sees– there is also art in the process of creating. In a similar way, arts administration is not only about institutional operations and logistics– it’s about building relationships and inviting our audiences to take part in our story. It requires imagination, creativity, and listening. And it necessitates that we view ourselves, and our role within the organization, as a crucial part of the story as well.”

The M.A.A. program has placed 74 students in Professional Internships since its launch in 2020.

“The internships serve as a critical experience in bridging students’ coursework with the realities of applying that knowledge in practice,” Christi Camper Moore Ph.D., head of the arts administration program, said on the potential impact on the field. “We want graduates of the program to become effective leaders who have meaningful, sustainable impact in the organizations and communities they serve. The program’s goals have always been to equip students with the skills and knowledge to helm arts and cultural organizations, navigate unique challenges in the nonprofit sector, and advocate for policies, resources, and programs that support arts organizations. The next generation of arts administrators must continue to evolve the field, advocating for the vitality, richness, and essentialness of our arts and culture organizations.”

Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

Students typically complete the Ph.D. degree requirements in three to five years. Early in the program, students focus on course-work that enhances their knowledge as they prepare to conduct research.

Within one year, students must pass the departmental qualifying exam, an oral exam that tests research skills and knowledge of a core mechanical engineering subject area.

Student research forms the core of the Ph.D. program. Research involves active student-directed inquiry into an engineering problem, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.

Ph.D. Financial Support

The majority of full-time Ph.D. students accepted through the standard application process receive fellowships that cover full tuition, the technology fee, and a stipend for living expenses for up to five years, as long as sufficient progress is made toward degree completion. These awards are sufficient to cover all expenses for the year (including summers). Students are required to pay for health insurance, the transportation fee, the activity fee, books, and course supplies. Off-campus housing is available within walking distance of campus. At least one year of residency is required for the Ph.D. We offer two ways to enter the Ph.D. program.

Advanced entry Ph.D.

The advanced entry Ph.D. is for students with an M.S. in an engineering discipline or equivalent field.

Direct Ph.D.

The direct Ph.D. is for students entering the program with a B.S. in an engineering discipline or equivalent field.

Study: Drug Protects Against Air Pollution-Related Alzheimer’s Signs in Mice

Home » Study: Drug Protects Against Air Pollution-Related Alzheimer’s Signs in Mice

Mice that had been fed the drug GSM-15606 had lower levels of Aβ42, a longer form of the amyloid beta protein, a major component of the telltale plaques seen in human brains with Alzheimer’s.

A new study led by the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology shows how feeding mice a drug called GSM-15606 provided protection against air pollution-related increases in proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Senior author Caleb Finch , USC University Professor and holder of the ARCO/William F. Kieschnick Chair in the Neurobiology of Aging at the USC Leonard Davis School, has studied  air pollution’s effects on the brain  for several years, especially the consequences of  exposure to fine particulates  found in pollution from automobiles, factories and more. Many studies have shown that air quality has a  sizeable impact on risk  of Alzheimer and accelerates cognitive decline , he said.

Air pollution is correlated with systemic inflammation and promotes the formation of amyloid plaques, the clumps of aggregated peptide Aβ42 that form between the brain’s nerve cells in Alzheimer’s.

The latest work from Finch’s lab, published August 12 in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association , highlights the potential protection offered by a type of drug called a gamma-secretase modulator. The team tested a specific drug called GSM-15606, which was developed by study co-authors Rudolph E. Tanzi of Harvard and Kevin D. Rynearson of the University of California, San Diego.

GSM-15606 was fed to mice over 8 weeks; during that time, the animals were regularly exposed to air pollution in the form of either ambient nanoparticulate matter (nPM) or diesel exhaust particles (DEP). Following air pollution exposure, mice fed GSM-15606 had much lower levels of Aβ42 in the brain than mice exposed to pollution but not the drug.

The results indicate that GSM-15606 may one day have a role as a preventive measure against Alzheimer’s in people living with air pollution, Finch said.

“Because gamma secretase is needed for normal functions body-wide, this drug was designed to modulate, but not inhibit, production of Aβ42,” he said. “This is the first example of a new drug developed to slow Alzheimer’s that may also protect aging individuals from the environmental risk factor of air pollution.”

Along with Finch, study authors included first author Jose A. Godoy-Lugo as well as Max A. Thorwald, Mafalda Cacciottolo, Carla D’Agostino, Ararat Chakhoyan, and Constantinos Sioutas of USC; Rudolph E. Tanzi of Harvard; and Kevin D. Rynearson of the University of California, San Diego. Lab studies were supported by grants to Finch from the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund and NIH (R01-AG051521, P01-AG055367).

Doctorate Language and Culture Studies

Aim of study programme The PhD programme offers interdisciplinary and research-based studies, integrating linguistics, literary studies, folklore and theatre studies. Although the main task of the programme is the preservation and enhancement of national culture and science by preparing highly qualified researchers and specialists for researching the Latvian language, literature, folklore, theatre history and theory, the programme is also designed for aspiring specialists in other languages and cultures to enable postgraduate students to build their teaching and research careers at higher educational institutions and elsewhere.

The programme has been developed within the framework of the project “Design of Internationally Competitive Study Programmes Promoting the Development of the National Economy of Latvia at the University of Latvia” (project No. 8.2.1.0 / 18 / A / 015).

Programme structure

The programme has two sub-programmes: “Linguistics and literary studies” Two modules: “Linguistics” and “Literary studies”, leading to the degree of Doctor of Science (PhD) in Linguistics and Literary Studies.

“Folklore studies and theatre history and theory” Two modules: “Folklore studies” and “Theatre history and theory”, leading to the degree of Doctor of Science (PhD) in Music, Visual Arts and Architecture.

International students are welcome to the module “Linguistics” of the sub-programme “Linguistics and Literary Studies”. The goal of the sub-programme is to enhance the development of doctoral students’ research and academic competence, to prepare highly qualified specialists who can conduct independent and innovative research, work out and defend a PhD thesis, which makes a substantial original contribution to knowledge building in linguistics and literary studies.

Study reveals unique histone tag in oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, opening doors for advanced myelin repair therapies

In a new study, researchers with the Advanced Science Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center (CUNY ASRC) have identified a distinct histone tag in adult oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) that may pave the way for innovative therapies targeting myelin repair, a critical target for several neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and schizophrenia.

The histone tag, characterized by lysine 8 acetylation on histone H4, identifies a significant departure from the histone modifications found in neonatal OPCs.

Detailed in a paper published in The Journal of Cell Biology , the discovery of this unique histone tag in adult OPCs addresses a long-standing challenge in neurobiology: the inability to translate findings from neonatal OPCs to effective adult brain therapies.

Unlike their neonatal counterparts, adult OPCs exhibit a histone modification that appears to regulate their proliferation, a crucial factor for generating a pool of stem-like cells capable of developing into mature oligodendrocytes that produce new myelin—the protective sheath around nerve fibers that is often damaged in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases.

"The identification of this histone tag provides a clearer understanding of OPC proliferation in the adult brain, and it also holds promise for developing more effective therapies for conditions characterized by myelin damage like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and several psychiatric disorders ," said the study's principal investigator Patrizia Casaccia, founding director of the CUNY ASRC Neuroscience Initiative and Einstein Professor of Biology and Biochemistry at the CUNY Graduate Center.

"By focusing on adult OPCs, we can move closer to repairing myelin damage and improving patient outcomes."

"Our findings underscore the importance of targeting adult-specific cellular mechanisms in neurotherapeutic research," said the paper's co-first author David K. Dansu, Ph.D., a former biochemistry doctoral student researcher with the CUNY ASRC Neuroscience Initiative.

"Our future investigations will aim to further elucidate the role of lysine 8 acetylation on histone H4 and explore its potential in clinical applications," said co-first author and Graduate Center biochemistry Ph.D. student Ipek Selcen, also with the CUNY ASRC Neuroscience Initiative.

Dr. Maria Bulzacchelli is seeking TAs for her undergraduate course in the Fall of 2024, AS280.101, Intro to Public Health.

The course is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 PM – 4:15 PM with discussion sections on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays . Classes are at the Homewood campus and students are undergraduates.

The Intro to Public Health course provides an overview of the field of public health. Topics include the major causes of morbidity and mortality; the socioeconomic, behavioral, and environmental factors that affect health; the analytical methods used in the field; the role of government in protecting the public’s health; key features of the U.S. health care system; and current challenges in the field. The course also introduces students to the basic conceptual models and approaches that are central to public health practice.
