Middle school teachers work with young adolescents. They may teach one or more subjects. Middle school teachers develop and deliver curriculum and create assessments that show if their students are internalizing the material. The grade assignments and give constructive feedback to students. They adjust their lesson plans to take into consideration the results of assessments.

How to write a middle school teacher resume

Most resumes contain the same standard sections. Your middle school teacher CV may be a bit different because you may choose to add headings (if you have space), however, the basic sections are:

  • The resume skills section
  • The education section

You may choose components such as presentations, certifications and grants/awards.

A middle school teacher resume should emphasize what you are doing now and how that has prepared you for the job you seek. As you gain experience, your early work becomes less important. Hiring committees want to see where you are more than where you were a number of years ago. That is why we recommend the reverse chronological order format.

Job market and salary

Overall, the demand for middle school teachers is expected to grow by 7% in the next decade, which is typical for all fields, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says; however, subject matter determines the real demand. Mathematics, science, foreign language, English language learning, bilingual education and special education are all high-needs areas .

The U.S. average annual salary for middle school teachers is $49,478, Payscale reports, but this figure varies greatly by state.

The summary, or profile, of your middle school teacher resume tells HR who you are as a person. You have chosen a highly personal career, so this section carries weight. Introduce yourself and illuminate recruiters by showing off your biggest success. Then, in what remains of the 3-4 lines you have, describe your teaching philosophy or a classroom management technique you swear by.

Teachers believe in education, so your academic achievements are an important part of your middle school teacher resume. You should list all your degrees and certifications and any honors or distinctions you have earned.

Writing a good resume: student critique and practice exercise.

Resume writing is an important life skill in today's fast-changing workplace. Where prior generations had one or two steady jobs in their lifetime, today’s workers can expect to have six to nine jobs before retiring. That’s why knowing how to write and maintain a clear, effective and professional-looking resume is key to achieving a successful career.

To help students practice (and have a little fun), we provide two sample resumes for students to review. One comes from " Sally Sad ," a high school graduate with little motivation, job experience or sense of professionalism. The other is from " Joe Graduate ," a sharp student who graduated from a state university and has been active acquiring several skill sets.

Go over both resumes as a class. First, have students spend a few minutes writing down errors and needed improvements in Sally’s "bad" resume . ( NOTE : Four typos were intentionally added in. Can students identify them?) As a class, list the problems on a dry-erase board or chart paper. 

Next, go over Joe’s "good" resume . Compare and contrast the two resumes, explaining why Joe's is better and writing these aspects and reasons on the board or chart paper. Students also can suggest improvements Joe could have made.

You may want to note that there is no single best way to structure a resume. Additional sections that could have been included in the samples are Computer Skills, Honors and Awards, and School Activities. (See the samples on this website .) Ultimately, the resume should be tailored to the specific job for which one is applying.

Here are some points to cover when reviewing the sample resumes.

Sally’s Missteps:

  • She has an unprofessional, cutesy email address.
  • The Statement of Objective and Summary are unprofessional and not workplace-relevant. Photography might be a skill for her, but she has not emphasized how she has used this skill professionally.
  • Time availability should not be included on a resume.

  • She uses unprofessional wording (e.g., "awesome," "cool," "cute," "pics"), as well as inappropriate clipart and exclamation points, which have no place in a resume.
  • No date is listed for her high school diploma; there is no description of coursework that might be relevant to the workplace.
  • Her work history isn’t in order (jobs should be listed in reverse chronological order), and she included a questionable volunteer experience (cupcake tester) under Work Experience.
  • Her descriptions of past job duties fail to emphasize skills gained (e.g., "flip burgers and fill condiment containers"), and also reflect negatively on her customer service skills (e.g., "deal with annoying customer requests").
  • She includes information that doesn’t pertain to job skills (hobbies should only be listed if they are highly related to the job for which one is applying).

Joe’s Good Moves:

  • Based on his professionally stated objective, he listed skills that are relevant to his chosen career field.
  • He had no spelling errors or inappropriate/unprofessional wording.
  • He arranged his work history in reverse chronological order.
  • He described past job duties in a way that emphasizes his skills and leadership qualities.

Once students have completed their analysis of the resumes, go over best practices for resume writing . If desired, have students use the samples above and/or the samples on this website  to write their own resumes. Ask students to pair up and critique each other's drafts.

If you’re here, it means you’re looking for ways to teach your high school students professional skills. This 60-minute lesson plan has everything you need to teach your students resume-writing skills so they can write resumes that grab employers’ attention and, most importantly, lead to interviews. It includes materials, learning objectives and standards, activities and instructions, and student handouts. Get students warmed up and ready to tackle the next activity with a quick Do Now and Debrief, and Framing to help them understand the importance of resume building.

When students enter the classroom or sign into class online, project the slide that asks the following questions. You can also use a collaborative tool like Padlet and post the question there:

What is a resume anyway? How are they used and why do they matter?

Invite students to share out. If you use Padlet, give students the opportunity to read each other’s responses before they share. If you’re teaching in person, you can cold call or ask for volunteers. Online, you can ask students to type in the chat box. As students are sharing, note patterns that come up in their responses.

Once several students share, emphasize that a resume is a document that helps potential employers understand who you are when applying for a job:

“You might think that your resume’s goal is to win you a great job. That’s true in the long-run. But in the hiring process, a resume’s greatest impact comes when you first apply for the job. That’s when a company decides whether you’ll be one of a very few applicants who are invited to a job interview.”

Framing: Why do we need to learn this?

It’s important to format your resume in a way that allows recruiters and hiring managers to easily scan and identify your qualifications as they pertain to a specific job opportunity. They’re looking for one thing: how precisely your resume matches the requirements of the job they want to fill.

Recruiters spend an average of about six seconds reviewing a resume before making a decision to: a) continue reading, b) maybe save for later, or c) abandon and move on. And in some companies, the “person” measuring how well you match up isn’t a human at all! It’s a computer program on the lookout for key words and phrases.

Your resume needs to make a great first impression and fast. How can you write a resume that will help you get in the door? How do you get started?

You can use a tool like Mentimeter or Poll Everywhere to do a pulse check. Ask students on a scale of 1-5 (1 not confident, 5 ready to tailor their resume now), how prepared they feel to draft and tailor their resumes for potential employers. This information is also helpful for you, as you can use their responses to think about how much more guidance they need and whether or not you want to dig deeper into this skill.

Create a Google Form that gives students a place to reflect and set a goal. Here are some questions you might include:   

  • How prepared do you feel to draft and tailor resumes for potential employers?
  • What aspect of the resume-writing process do you feel most confident about?
  • What part of your resume do you want to work on next?
  • What do you need more help with?

Encourage students to continually assess their resumes, and adapt them as their goals change and as they gain experience. Remind them to consider format and content. Here are some questions they can ask themselves:

  • Will my resume stand out in a pile?
  • Have I considered the employer’s perspective?
  • Have I shown the employer I can do the job?
  • Do the headings I use and their order reflect what is most important to the position?
  • Do my bullet points include details about the quality and impact of my past work—the “So what?”
  • Can I say the same thing with fewer words?
  • Is it free of spelling and grammar errors?
  • Have I asked someone to proofread it and offer feedback?
  • Is my name and key contact information up-to-date and clearly visible on every page?
  • Is the text (font and size) easy to read?
  • Is there enough white space?
  • Is my formatting consistent?
