The University of Hildesheim is one of the best universities to kickstart your passion for writing. It is equipped with world-class facilities and well-trained faculty. They offer a Bachelor’s degree in creative writing and cultural journalism. Unlike other creative writing courses in Germany, this university emphasizes both one’s writing practice and literary and cultural journalistic writing. Dealing with various arts is also incorporated into the curriculum, for instance as a different method of writing using different media. Students pursuing a bachelor of creative writing and journalism engage with literary, cultural, and journalistic manifestations creatively and practically as part of the course.
The idea is to foster a dialogue between literary and cultural studies as theory and the writing process as practice. Practical outcomes should enter the theoretical discourse, and theoretical ideas should be applied to one’s writing. This course’s fundamental starting point is the observation and analysis of the present, which is regarded to be today’s culture. On the one hand, questions are raised regarding the circumstances under which this culture creates anything novel or distinctive.
On the other hand, questions are also raised regarding the circumstances in which one can innovate or change their practice. Once you complete your initial bachelor’s, you also get a chance to go for a 12-week internship. This degree is interdisciplinary covering arts and music for students who are open to theatre, music, and script writing. After the internship, the course ends with the thesis submission.

The two-year, part-time MSc in Creative Writing program offers a singular blend of substantial contact time, genre specialization, and critical and creative depth. The course has a strong emphasis on cross-cultural and cross-genre writing, highlighting the demands and difficulties of modern writers who generate their creative work in the context of a large, international writer, and critical community.
They provide a learning structure spanning two years that includes five residences, two facilitated retreats, and one research placement. The course’s unique element, the research placement, gives students between one and two weeks of hands-on experience writing for actual clients. The first year is purely focused based on covering poetry and prose in both fiction and non-fiction. The second year explores deeper about the different genres in these sections.

Content writing is the best field for you whether you want to develop a side business or a full-time career in the writing industry. Anyone can become a competent writer after they have gained the essential abilities, which is the message behind the creative writing notion. Writing creatively is all about using words in imaginative ways and getting beyond writer’s block. While there are numerous ways to accomplish this, the fundamental idea of creative writing is the playful manipulation of language.

What are creative writing graduate programs in germany.
Creative Writing Graduate Programs teach the art of language. You could develop your writing through study and practice. Classes might cover both general English topics, craft classes, and even courses about the publishing industry. Workshops offer the chance to hone your work. And of course, gain peer feedback to help improve that short story or poem. Most MFA Creative Writing programs take the format of a two-year program. (In the second year, MFA students may work on crafting a thesis.) That said, you may be able to find a three-year program. And some students study part-time. So, they could earn their MFA on a different timeline.
But those are far from the only options. You may find programs that offer tracks in:
Not all schools offer coursework in the same genres. So, look around! Don’t want to choose just one track? You may find an interdisciplinary MFA Creative Writing degree program.
MFA stands for Master of Fine Arts. An MFA in Creative Writing may be an especially common option. Most programs include courses in the department of English and courses about the craft of writing. In addition, programs strive to create a community of writers. They may do that by:
In a traditional program, students take courses on campus. Some candidates may even pursue a teaching assistantship. That’s where you teach undergrad courses. Or help other faculty members with teaching duties. Often, in exchange for a stipend and/or tuition waiver.
But these days, MFA students could pursue other paths. Like an online degree program. Or programs where you take most classes online but do a brief residency on campus. (Often called low residency.)
Wondering about admissions requirements? An MFA in writing often considers more than just your undergrad transcripts. The program may look at your past writing experience. And a big part of your application is the writing sample. Samples should likely be in the genre you’d like to study. It could be a novel chapter. Or a collection of poems. Even a play or movie script!
Expect workshopping to be a large portion of your program. Workshops are writing intensive courses. Students develop new work for peer review. They submit drafts for peer feedback. Then it’s time for revisions to make the work as good as it can be.
These classes might be a great way to produce new work. Plus, learn from what your peers are writing. And, workshops could provide a safe place for students to give and get critical feedback.
There’s one other potential plus. Writing workshops often bring together students from different genres. So, you could get constructive feedback from many different perspectives. For example, students writing poetry could offer fresh insights into your creative nonfiction.
Workshop requirements may differ by graduate school. Want the specifics? Contact the program director for the MFA program you’re considering.
Practicing writing in workshop is just part of an MFA. You’ll also take core academic courses. These focus on the craft of writing. For instance, you might learn about point of view. Or different forms and styles of poetry. You’ll study how other writers achieved certain effects. And you’ll try your hand at new techniques. MFA writing courses could include:
Graduate English courses typically round out an MFA. A few examples of potential courses include:
Courses offered may vary by institution. Check with prospective masters in writing programs for more details about their course guide.
Creative Writing PhD Programs are writing intense programs like the MFA. But they may have more of a research element along with coursework.
So how does this PhD program differ from other doctorate programs? One big difference may be the dissertation. Most doctoral programs ask students to write and present works of original research. In comparison, creative dissertations are usually long-form works. Like:
This could possibly help jumpstart your writing career. Or at least, serve as a great addition to your professional portfolio.
Due to the intensity of the above-mentioned writing requirements, students could potentially complete a PhD program in 3 to 5 years. Program length may vary by school and enrollment.
PhD programs in this field may require previous graduate experience, as well as a 3.5 graduate GPA. Additionally, writing schools may ask students to submit samples of their previous work. Check with intended programs for more admissions details.
Graduate Certificate Creative Writing programs might be a great way to quickly build your writing skills and knowledge. These programs typically do not require a minimum GPA for admissions. This may make them more accessible to a wide array of students, so that they can begin to hone their craft.
Many certificate programs only workshop one specific genre. For example, they might focus solely on children’s literature. This may provide a focused curriculum without unnecessary academic electives. So, graduate certificates are often on the shorter side. Full time students could potentially earn a Graduate Certificate in one year, although program lengths vary.
Residency requirements are common in many graduate writing programs. Biannually, students may be required to live and work on campus.
This is done to provide a space for students to concentrate on writing, reviewing, and revising their work. During this time, you could be sharing housing with other students from your program. Students are also encouraged to workshop pieces with others in the residency program to further refine the final product.
Typically, graduate writing programs either offer a low or high residency option. Low residency writing programs are shorter and may last around 10 days. High residency writing programs are often lengthier, lasting from 2 to 6 weeks. Residency lengths and details may vary by university.
Pinpointing MFA programs that complement your daily routine could be difficult. But, there are several different program types that could make it easier to study and write…even if you have other responsibilities.
On campus programs are what you might picture when you imagine the traditional university experience. Graduate creative writing schools provide the opportunity to develop your work alongside your peers and mentors.
Things like workshops and office hours could make it easier to get help polishing your work. Additionally, this might be an opportunity to build professional relationships with classmates. You never know who might be your connection to a literary agent or publishing house.
Online MFA programs are a great way to stay in your own space while earning your degree. No matter where you live, you could attend classes on your own schedule. And, you could still receive valuable feedback from peers and professors via email or online forums.
An online writing degree may be a perfect option for students who work. This way, you could pursue your professional endeavors while honing your craft.
It’s important to note that online programs may require students to take part in residency programs. Typically, these are offered in the low-residency format but could require you try travel to campus or a nearby location.
Hybrid Creative Writing degrees offer a little taste of both the above programs. Depending on your personal schedule, you could choose to pursue one style of learning at any given time. For instance, you could take online courses while working. Or, take on campus courses in between jobs.
This might be great for current freelance writers because of their constantly changing work schedule. Depending on your future responsibilities, you could plan your semesters accordingly.

Below is a list of best universities in Europe ranked based on their research performance in Creative Writing. A graph of 1.17M citations received by 136K academic papers made by 486 universities in Europe was used to calculate publications' ratings, which then were adjusted for release dates and added to final scores.
We don't distinguish between undergraduate and graduate programs nor do we adjust for current majors offered. You can find information about granted degrees on a university page but always double-check with the university website.
Please note that our approach to subject rankings is based on scientific outputs and heavily biased on art-related topics towards institutions with computer science research profiles.
For Creative Writing
We founded the Berlin Writers' Workshop in 2017 to build an open international writing community in the capital of Germany. We believe great writers come from everywhere, and that literature doesn't begin or end in the university or private school.
Our instructors are working writers and translators. We've published books, taught university classes and seminars, and written for magazines and literary journals throughout the English-speaking world. We started the Berlin Writers’ Workshop to bring world-class English-language creative writing instruction to Europe.
The heart of our community is the writing workshop, where students read and critique one another's work under the guidance of a professional writer. We also offer seminars, readings, and one-on-one mentoring. Follow the links to read more about our instructors , classes , mentoring and manuscript services , and events . Read what our students have to say about us here .
Q: Which class should I take?
A: If you're not sure, Creative Writing I is the place to start: it's designed so that both novice and experienced writers can get plenty out of it, especially if you're new to the workshop model. If you're stuck on your novel (we've been there) and have some workshop experience you should check out Fiction Writing I . A full list of our course offerings is available here . We're always adding courses to our calendar , so keep checking back or subscribe to our newsletter to the right.
Q: Do you offer manuscript consultations, one-on-one tutoring, or special classes for schools and businesses?
A: Yes, we occasionally can arrange special services for interested individuals and organizations including manuscript consultations, private mentorship, and group classes. We’ve run workshops for companies and organizations of all sizes, and we can work with you to develop a specific project, build professional writing skills, or just help give your team a fun and creative development day. For more information, please write us at [email protected], or use the contact form on this website.
Q: What if I want to sit in on a class?
A: Our workshops are limited to enrolled students for reasons of privacy. We offer regular free readings and events where you can meet and mingle with our students and faculty and find out more. Find student testimonials here .
Q: Where are the classes held?
A: We offer both online classes and in-person classes in Berlin, which take place in co-working spaces or in private apartments, mostly in Neukölln, Alt-Treptow, Templehof and Friedrichshain. In these cases the exact address is shared with students when they enroll.
Q: How much do classes cost?
A: Our classes are priced according to the number of class hours. Our eight-week workshops costs 300€, and intensive workshops cost 150€. We pride ourselves in keeping low running costs, which means the vast majority of tuition goes directly to our instructors. Should you study creative writing overseas? The answer is yes! As a student of a discipline that embraces storytelling and unique points of view, a semester or more in a foreign country will be invaluable to your growth as a creative.
Studying overseas, you’ll encounter cultural differences alongside new ideas in the classroom -- and you’ll learn how to weave each learned experience into your own lifestyle and writings. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is an excellent way to challenge your preconceptions about the world and find your voice as a writer.
At the end of the day, creative writing is about telling compelling stories. There is certainly no better way to garner a few of your own classic tales than by traveling overseas.
From classroom learning to immersion experiences, the types of overseas programs to pursue are abundant. Creative writing students will thrive in the following programs.
Discussion-based classes are wonderful for analyzing literature, hashing out your creative ideas, and receiving valuable feedback on your writing. In a workshop-style class, you and your peers will bring unique backgrounds to the table, helping everyone gain a fresh perspective on what makes a good story.
If you’ve been wanting to include different cultures in your writings or try penning a tale in a foreign language, real-world immersion courses are a terrific start. These programs often include language classes and host family accommodation, which will help you become more knowledgeable of local customs.
Heading overseas is an exciting way to finish up your senior thesis. For creative writing students, you’ll likely need to hand in a writing portfolio that’s focused on a specific genre, like fiction or poetry. Studying under the guidance of accomplished foreign authors is a smart way to fine-tune your final piece.
With creative writing programs available around the globe, choosing a host country might cause some out of control pros and cons lists. The below regions are popular for students of the written word.
In Europe, creative writing programs run tandem with literature courses in an abundance of locations. Naturally, Shakespeare’s roots in the United Kingdom invite playwrights and poets. Meanwhile, students of general creative writing disciplines will also find enticing courses in countries like Italy , Spain , and France , some of which might challenge you to write in another language.
Universities in South Africa and Ghana welcome creative writing students to take their studies overseas. In literature-heavy courses, you’ll polish your reading repertoire before tackling your own creative projects, allowing you to learn and apply techniques from masters of the craft. Explore programs through organizations like Arcadia University and NYU .
Universities in Australia and New Zealand host creative writing students for a semester or more overseas. With an UNESCO World Heritage City of Literature like Melbourne or Dunedin as the backdrop to your studies, you won’t struggle to find the motivation to wield your own pen. IES Abroad and CIS Abroad run programs here and in the next region on this list.
Another top spot for overseas creative writing programs is Asia. Courses in Thailand and Japan will have you studying the work of acclaimed local authors while completing creative writing assignments. Plus, as your overseas adventure takes you beyond the borders of your host country, you’ll find plenty more tales to tell through your travels.
Like any huge life decision, studying overseas requires a few pre-trip steps to ensure that you have the best possible experience.
Selecting an overseas creative writing program can be an enjoyable portion of trip preparation, but it’s one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. As an imaginative person, your initial thoughts will probably center around atmosphere -- after all, working on assignments in a Parisian café sounds pretty quintessential study abroad creative writing student.
However, traveling outside of your comfort zone could be exactly what you need to evaluate your creative abilities from a new point of view. Course material is also extremely important -- some programs may lean more towards fiction while others cater to aspiring poets. Keep your professional goals in mind when planning, and don’t shy away from a challenge.
While creative writing tends to be a safe field of study, your host country may carry its own unique risks. Make sure you’re at least up to date on your regular immunizations before you leave, and check in with your doctor about additional ones according to your destination.
While threats to personal safety will also vary by place, walking with a group of friends, carrying valuables in a neck pouch, and looking both ways before you cross the street are rules that can be applied almost everywhere. If you’re really worried, you can always purchase a travel insurance plan to cover the loss of possessions or medical emergencies.
Studying creative writing overseas will expand the opportunities for your future in so many ways. You’ll learn indispensable lessons from your professors, fellow students, and the experience of living abroad. Be open to applying new ideas to both your writing and your way of life. Flexibility is the key to success during a semester abroad.

Below is a list of countries with information on each about which qualifications we accept. If your country is not listed please email [email protected] .
We apply a contextual admissions process for UK undergraduate applicants who have been in care, attend a low performing school, live in an area where few students go to university, or are the first generation of their family to enter Higher Education.
Those who are eligible may receive a conditional offer with reduced entry requirements, typically up to two grades lower for A-levels and one grade (or eight tariff points) for BTEC or mixed qualifications.
Typically the only scenario where we make conditional offers expressed as UCAS tariff points is when an applicant presents mixed qualifications, most typically a combination of A Levels and a BTEC qualification.
In this instance, we may make a tariff point offer to present the applicant with more flexibility on equivalencies. In this case, please be aware that we may still ask for a specific score across certain qualifications and subjects. E.g. 'This offer is conditional on you achieving 128 tariff points. This must include A Level Mathematics at grade B.'
We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.
We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.
The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make. Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.
If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.
We welcome Access course applications from 'mature' students. These applicants will be considered on the basis of their own merits. Please be aware that Access students are often asked for further information to supplement their application, this is normally in the form of a questionnaire.
