• State the main idea
• Often written as the first sentence of each paragraph
• Supporting details and ideas
• Examples, elaborations, explanations,s, and descriptions can also be included
• Must support the main idea discussed in this particular body/body paragraph
• Use linkers, connectors, and transition words.

Conclusion paragraph:

• Restate the main idea
• Use words like hence, therefore, thus, as a result.
• Write it like it is the last sentence of the paragraph.

3. Concluding paragraph:

• Bring the ending of things that you have discussed earlier.
• Restate your thesis statements.
• The conclusion must have 4 sentences
• You may suggest, give opinions or reaffirm your stand
• Use words: To conclude, to summarize, as a conclusion, finally, lastly, eventually, to encapsulate.

Tips to write MUET Essay for Malaysian Students

The best way to write a MUET essay is to have a succinct thesis in the introduction and also be cognizant of transitions between one topic and another.

i realised that you used lots of phrases in the essays. can you recommend phrases that can be used in any type of essay?

Is that compulsory to have 3 ideas for the academic writing? will they penalise us if we only have 2 or more than 3 ideas? thnx

its up to you..but be aware of word limitation

not compulsory.. standard answer.. u can write more ... or less.. depends on how you addressed the issue, if it is mature and critial or not with good grammar and vocab.

Can we use short forms in our essay? For example: 1. pc - personal computer 2. sms - short message service My teacher said it is prohibited to use short forms unless we write it in full and show the abbreviation in a bracket next to it.

Abbreviations is not suitable for formal writing.

i wouldnt say that it is prohibited. maybe not encouraged but definitely not prohibited esp for very common abbreviations. anyway, if you are worried then use only the long versions.

hi, for the argumentative essay, can we write a new point for the counter argument part? it's not related to my ideas that is against the topic of smoking take this for example: i'm against the topic of smoking. my points are 1. harms passive smokers 2. diff to quit smoking 3. burns our money counter argument an opponent claims smoking is not bad for health eg. his father can live into the old age. thanks for answering :)

if you introduce a counter argument you need to refute it with one more solid point to ensure that your stand is still strong. counter arguments are very good in showing critical thinking. :P

If you are ambitious and hope to achieve the highest band, then you need to start doing a lot of reading. Whether it’s information on general knowledge, novels or the news, any form of reading will help you tremendously. Your sources could be newspapers, magazines, books, journals or even texts. 2. Listening

This is the one time you can feel less guilty about watching the TV and blasting your radio while trying to study. Listening is an important component that you’d need to master and many students fail to do well in the listening test. Watch TV without the subtitles so that you can learn to grasp what’s being said. If you can summarise the meaning and tell the gist of the story, then you know that you’re ready for the listening paper. 

3. Speaking

Many students find the speaking paper difficult. Although English is widely spoken in Malaysia, we’re all so used to Malaysian-English that not adding a ‘ lah’ or a ‘ loh’ in a sentence makes it tricky to get the message across. To get yourself accustomed to speaking good, proper English, train yourself even when you’re having a normal conversation with friends and family. This will increase your confidence and ensure that you communicate smoothly. When you can do this without thinking too hard, you’ll have less things to worry about during the exam, even when you’re feeling a little nervous.
