On the positive side, the committee member will remember your essay and application. On the negative side, if the reader disagrees with your counterintuitive proposal, they can actually hold it against you. There is both risk and reward. If you do go down this path, think carefully about the possible reactions your reader might have. 

The last thing to remember is that Stanford is a progressive institution. They tend to have progressive social values. While your personal beliefs might not align with this, make sure to remember your audience.

Another thing that you want to be mindful of in this prompt is your essay’s length. You aren’t given a lot of space to make an extensive argument, so managing word count will be a challenge. 

The point of these short answer questions is for Stanford’s admissions officers to gain more insight into who you are, what you are passionate about, and how you think. You want to make sure you prioritize stating your opinion clearly on the subject rather than giving a long explanation of the challenge. This essay isn’t meant for you to solve the problem either. If it’s society’s greatest challenge, that can’t be resolved in 50 words. The important thing to write about is your opinion on the matter.

Social media is an undeniable force in modern society. With over half the global population using social platforms, and the average person spending at least two hours scrolling through them every day , it can’t be overstated that our digital spaces have altered our lives as we knew them. From giving us new ways to come together and stay connected with the world around us, to providing outlets for self-expression, social media has fundamentally changed the way we initiate, build and maintain our relationships.

But while these digital communities have become commonplace in our daily lives, researchers are only beginning to understand the consequences of social media use on future generations. Social media models are changing every day, with major platforms like Meta and Instagram evolving into primary digital advertising spaces as much as social ones. A critical responsibility falls on marketers to spread messages that inform, rather than contribute to the sea of misinformation that thrives on social media.

Read on to see what’s on marketers’ minds when it comes to the impact of social media on society:

MENTAL HEALTH

You’ve likely heard about the negative impacts that social media can have on mental health. Experts are weighing in on the role that the algorithms and design of social platforms play in exasperating these concerns.

At SXSW 2019 , Aza Raskin, co-founder of the Center for Human Technology, talked about the “digital loneliness epidemic,” which focused on the rise of depression and loneliness as it relates to social media use. During the panel, Raskin spoke about the “infinite scroll,” the design principle that enables users to continuously scroll through their feeds, without ever having to decide whether to keep going—it’s hard to imagine what the bottom of a TikTok feed would look like, and that’s intentional. But with the knowledge that mental health concerns are undeniably linked to social media use, the dilemma we’re now facing is when does good design become inhumane design?

Arguably, Rankin’s term for social media use could now be renamed the “digital loneliness pandemic ” as the world faces unprecedented isolation during the COVID-19 outbreak. In 2020 the Ad Council released a study exploring factors that cause loneliness, and what can be done to alleviate it. Interestingly, our research found that while social isolation is one factor that can cause loneliness, 73% of respondents typically maintain interpersonal relationships via technology, including engaging with others on social media. Simply put, social media use can both contribute to and help mitigate feelings of isolation. So how do we address this Catch-22? We should ask ourselves how we can use social media as a platform to foster positive digital communities as young adults rely on it more and more to cope with isolation.

Findings like these have been useful as we reexamine the focuses of Ad Council campaigns. In May 2020, our iconic Seize the Awkward campaign launched new creative highlighting ways young people could use digital communications tools to stay connected and check in on one another’s mental health while practicing physical distancing. A year later, we launched another mental health initiative, Sound It Out , which harnesses the power of music to speak to 10-14-year-olds’ emotional wellbeing. Ad Council has seen the importance of spreading awareness around mental health concerns as they relate to social media consumption in young adults—who will become the next generation of marketers.

EXTREMISM & HATE

Another trend on experts’ minds is how the algorithms behind these massively influential social media platforms may contribute to the rise of extremism and online radicalization.

Major social networking sites have faced criticism over how their advanced algorithms can lead users to increasingly fringe content. These platforms are central to discussions around online extremism, as social forums have become spaces for extreme communities to form and build influence digitally. However, these platforms are responding to concerns and troubleshooting functionalities that have the potential to result in dangerous outcomes. Meta, for example, announced test prompts to provide anti-extremism resources and support for users it believes have been exposed to extremist content on their feeds.

But as extremist groups continue to turn to fringe chatrooms and the “dark web” that begin on social media, combing through the underbelly of the internet and stopping the spread of hateful narratives is a daunting task. Promoting public service messages around Racial Justice and Diversity & Inclusion are just some of the ways that Ad Council and other marketers are using these platforms to move the needle away from hateful messaging and use these platforms to change mindsets in a positive way.

PUBLIC HEALTH CRISES

Social media can be both a space to enlighten and spread messages of doubt. The information age we’re all living in has enabled marketers to intervene as educators and providers of informative messaging to all facets of the American public. And no time has this been more urgent than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public health efforts around mask mandates and vaccine rollouts have now become increasingly polarized issues. Social media platforms have turned into breeding grounds for spreading disinformation around vaccinations, and as a result, has contributed to vaccine hesitancy among the American public. Meta, Instagram, and other platforms have begun to flag certain messages as false, but the work of regulating misinformation, especially during a pandemic, will be an enduring problem. To combat this, Ad Council and the COVID Collaborative have put a particular emphasis on our historic COVID-19 Vaccine Education initiative, which has connected trusted messengers with the “uncommitted” American public who feel the most uncertainty around getting the vaccine.

Living during a global pandemic has only solidified a societal need for social media as a way to stay connected to the world at large. During the pandemic, these platforms have been used to promote hopeful and educational messages, like #AloneTogether , and ensures that social media marketing can act as a public service.

DIGITAL ACTIVISM

Beyond serving as an educational resource, social media has been the space for digital activism across a myriad of social justice issues. Movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter have gone viral thanks to the power of social media. What starts as a simple hashtag has resulted in real change, from passing sexual harassment legislation in response to #MeToo, to pushing for criminal justice reform because of BLM activists. In these cases, social media empowered likeminded people to organize around a specific cause in a way not possible before.

It’s impossible to separate the role of social media from the scalable impact that these movements have had on society. #MeToo and BLM are just two examples of movements that have sparked national attention due in large part to conversations that began on social media.

SO, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MARKETERS?

Social media is a great equalizer that allows for large-scale discourse and an endless, unfiltered stream of content. Looking beyond the repercussions for a generation born on social media, these platforms remain an essential way for marketers to reach their audiences.

Whether you argue there are more benefits or disadvantages to a world run on social media, we can all agree that social media has fundamentally shifted how society communicates. With every scroll, view, like, comment and share, we’re taught something new about the impact of social media on the way we think and see the world.

But until we find a way to hold platforms more accountable for the global consequences of social media use, it’s up to marketers to use these digital resources as engines of progressive messaging. We can’t control the adverse effects of the Internet, but as marketers, we can do our part in ensuring that the right messages are being spread and that social media remains a force for social good.

What does gender equality look like today?

Progress towards gender equality is looking bleak. But it doesn’t need to.

A new global analysis of progress on gender equality and women’s rights shows women and girls remain disproportionately affected by the socioeconomic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, struggling with disproportionately high job and livelihood losses, education disruptions and increased burdens of unpaid care work. Women’s health services, poorly funded even before the pandemic, faced major disruptions, undermining women’s sexual and reproductive health. And despite women’s central role in responding to COVID-19, including as front-line health workers, they are still largely bypassed for leadership positions they deserve.

UN Women’s latest report, together with UN DESA, Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2021 presents the latest data on gender equality across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The report highlights the progress made since 2015 but also the continued alarm over the COVID-19 pandemic, its immediate effect on women’s well-being and the threat it poses to future generations.

We’re breaking down some of the findings from the report, and calling for the action needed to accelerate progress.

The pandemic is making matters worse

One and a half years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, the toll on the poorest and most vulnerable people remains devastating and disproportionate. The combined impact of conflict, extreme weather events and COVID-19 has deprived women and girls of even basic needs such as food security. Without urgent action to stem rising poverty, hunger and inequality, especially in countries affected by conflict and other acute forms of crisis, millions will continue to suffer.

A global goal by global goal reality check:

Goal 1. Poverty

In 2021, extreme poverty is on the rise and progress towards its elimination has reversed. An estimated 435 million women and girls globally are living in extreme poverty.

And yet we can change this .

Over 150 million women and girls could emerge from poverty by 2030 if governments implement a comprehensive strategy to improve access to education and family planning, achieve equal wages and extend social transfers.

Goal 2. Zero hunger

The global gender gap in food security has risen dramatically during the pandemic, with more women and girls going hungry. Women’s food insecurity levels were 10 per cent higher than men’s in 2020, compared with 6 per cent higher in 2019.

This trend can be reversed , including by supporting women small-scale producers, who typically earn far less than men, through increased funding, training and land rights reforms.

Goal 3. Good health and well-being

Disruptions in essential health services due to COVID-19 are taking a tragic toll on women and girls. In the first year of the pandemic, there were an estimated 1.4 million additional unintended pregnancies in lower and middle-income countries.

We need to do better .

Response to the pandemic must include prioritizing sexual and reproductive health services, ensuring they continue to operate safely now and after the pandemic is long over. In addition, more support is needed to ensure life-saving personal protection equipment, tests, oxygen and especially vaccines are available in rich and poor countries alike as well as to vulnerable population within countries.

Goal 4. Quality education

A year and a half into the pandemic, schools remain partially or fully closed in 42 per cent of the world’s countries and territories. School closures spell lost opportunities for girls and an increased risk of violence, exploitation and early marriage .

Governments can do more to protect girls education .

Measures focused specifically on supporting girls returning to school are urgently needed, including measures focused on girls from marginalized communities who are most at risk.

Goal 5. Gender equality

The pandemic has tested and even reversed progress in expanding women’s rights and opportunities. Reports of violence against women and girls, a “shadow” pandemic to COVID-19, are increasing in many parts of the world. COVID-19 is also intensifying women’s workload at home, forcing many to leave the labour force altogether.

Building forward differently and better will hinge on placing women and girls at the centre of all aspects of response and recovery, including through gender-responsive laws, policies and budgeting.

Goal 6. Clean water and sanitation

In 2018, nearly 2.3 billion people lived in water-stressed countries. Without safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities, women and girls find it harder to lead safe, productive and healthy lives.

Change is possible .

Involve those most impacted in water management processes, including women. Women’s voices are often missing in water management processes. 

Goal 7. Affordable and clean energy

Increased demand for clean energy and low-carbon solutions is driving an unprecedented transformation of the energy sector. But women are being left out. Women hold only 32 per cent of renewable energy jobs.

We can do better .

Expose girls early on to STEM education, provide training and support to women entering the energy field, close the pay gap and increase women’s leadership in the energy sector.

Goal 8. Decent work and economic growth

The number of employed women declined by 54 million in 2020 and 45 million women left the labour market altogether. Women have suffered steeper job losses than men, along with increased unpaid care burdens at home.

We must do more to support women in the workforce .

Guarantee decent work for all, introduce labour laws/reforms, removing legal barriers for married women entering the workforce, support access to affordable/quality childcare.

Goal 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

The COVID-19 crisis has spurred striking achievements in medical research and innovation. Women’s contribution has been profound. But still only a little over a third of graduates in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field are female.

We can take action today.

 Quotas mandating that a proportion of research grants are awarded to women-led teams or teams that include women is one concrete way to support women researchers. 

Goal 10. Reduced inequalities

Limited progress for women is being eroded by the pandemic. Women facing multiple forms of discrimination, including women and girls with disabilities, migrant women, women discriminated against because of their race/ethnicity are especially affected.

Commit to end racism and discrimination in all its forms, invest in inclusive, universal, gender responsive social protection systems that support all women. 

Goal 11. Sustainable cities and communities

Globally, more than 1 billion people live in informal settlements and slums. Women and girls, often overrepresented in these densely populated areas, suffer from lack of access to basic water and sanitation, health care and transportation.

The needs of urban poor women must be prioritized .

Increase the provision of durable and adequate housing and equitable access to land; included women in urban planning and development processes.

Goal 12. Sustainable consumption and production; Goal 13. Climate action; Goal 14. Life below water; and Goal 15. Life on land

Women activists, scientists and researchers are working hard to solve the climate crisis but often without the same platforms as men to share their knowledge and skills. Only 29 per cent of featured speakers at international ocean science conferences are women.

 And yet we can change this .

Ensure women activists, scientists and researchers have equal voice, representation and access to forums where these issues are being discussed and debated. 

Goal 16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

The lack of women in decision-making limits the reach and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergency recovery efforts. In conflict-affected countries, 18.9 per cent of parliamentary seats are held by women, much lower than the global average of 25.6 per cent.

This is unacceptable .

It's time for women to have an equal share of power and decision-making at all levels.

Goal 17. Global partnerships for the goals

There are just 9 years left to achieve the Global Goals by 2030, and gender equality cuts across all 17 of them. With COVID-19 slowing progress on women's rights, the time to act is now.

Looking ahead

As it stands today, only one indicator under the global goal for gender equality (SDG5) is ‘close to target’: proportion of seats held by women in local government. In other areas critical to women’s empowerment, equality in time spent on unpaid care and domestic work and decision making regarding sexual and reproductive health the world is far from target. Without a bold commitment to accelerate progress, the global community will fail to achieve gender equality. Building forward differently and better will require placing women and girls at the centre of all aspects of response and recovery, including through gender-responsive laws, policies and budgeting.

We begin to learn our culture—the ways of our society—just after birth. That process is called socialization, and it involves far more than schooling. Our culture shapes the way we work and play, and it makes a difference in how we view ourselves and others. It affects our values—what we consider right and wrong. This is how the society we live in influences our choices. But our choices can also influence others and ultimately help shape our society.

Imagine that you encounter a stranger walking down the street. How might you describe the person? What labels would you use? We know that every person is different from any other in countless ways, yet when we encounter others we often rely on generalizations to describe them. “It's a natural tendency,” says psychologist Deborah Tannen. “We must see the world in patterns in order to make sense of it; we wouldn’t be able to deal with the daily onslaught of people and objects if we couldn’t predict a lot about them and feel that we know who and what they are." 1

Our society—through its particular culture, customs, institutions, and more—provides us with the labels we use to categorize the people we encounter. These labels are based on beliefs about race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economic class, and more. Sometimes our beliefs about these categories are so strong that they prevent us from seeing the unique identities of others. Sometimes these beliefs also make us feel suspicion, fear, or hatred toward some members of our society. Other times, especially when we are able to get to know a person, we are able to see past labels and, perhaps, find common ground.

The stories in this chapter explore some of the dilemmas people face as they establish themselves both as individuals and as members of a group, and as they define themselves and are defined by others. As the first step in the Facing History & Ourselves journey, this chapter introduces ideas about human behavior and decision making that will serve as a foundation for examining the historical case study in the chapters that follow. Teachers are encouraged to select the readings that match their objectives and the interests and needs of their students.

A society is a group of people living together in a more or less ordered community. In my personal opinion, I think people nowadays are controlled by society. For example, consider the fashion trends like distressed jeans, crop tops, and bangles. We see these fads look good on other people and we want to look good as well so what one person was wearing yesterday, twelve people are wearing today. Society influences us in ways we cannot even begin to comprehend. Language itself frames our understanding of the world around us. What you wear, What language you speak, What kind of education you have, What kind of music you like, What kind of job you have, what standing you have in your community, what kind of haircut you have, your nonverbal communication, child rearing practices, tastes in food, your religion, even your physical body is influenced by society. Nearly every aspect of your being is a product of society. We don’t have as much control over our beliefs and attitudes as we’d like to. The truth is that almost nothing about you or me is entirely unique.

Computers have replaced human workers as well as transport and communication, at least in the developed countries. In many developing countries, the impact of technologies in rural settings is likely to be just as great. Our possession of these objects illustrates the wide variety of ways in which we rely on them. Our valuable technological devices appear to be ever gaining in utility and productivity. Their impact can be traced in spheres such as industrial, urban, educational, and military, with the result that it seems an exaggeration to assert that there has been no corresponding impact on other aspects of modern society. In contemporary thinking, technology is often considered the opposite of natural magic. Both rely on the desirability of seeking gain using artificial means. To our way of thinking, one fact is evident: what had been natural magic has been transformed into - or replaced by - technology. The material and literary record from Greece indicates an appearance of a stage on which a greater number of technological dances were being performed. Balancing work, time, and space was not the worry that it is to modern technological man. Each instance of difficulty seemed to have been addressed factually. This did not mean that the development of tools was carried out scientifically, but there was certainly more government "participation."

The development of non-invasive imaging techniques can be traced back to studies on the interaction of radiation and matter which began in the 19th century. The development of techniques based on Gamma Ray, X-Ray, Ultrasonic, CT, MRI, SPECT involves our basic knowledge of atomic physics and leads to technologies used in industries. The advances in endoscope and gastrointestinal diagnosis and treatment are partly due to Raman spectrometer and its fiber. Such groundbreaking technologies have been applied elsewhere, such as in diagnostic imaging, for example, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonic to non-invasively provide images of the body's interior.

The importance of technology in education has increased significantly over the last decade. ICT may include, but are not limited to, internet technology, broadcast technologies, telephony, computer hardware, software, middleware, audiovisual systems and related equipment. ICTs could prove to be a powerful tool in putting the universities and higher education institutions of a developing member on the world map". The use of ICT resources in education is not merely to find a way where they disseminate information. It is to educate new professionals profile. Educational projects have defined its competence profile. This new professional should be able to learn how to learn, that is, part of the formation of the degree course is teaching the student how to seek new knowledge.

The introduction of technology has affected the creation of market-based systems in the economy. The internet has transformed the way many things are done - buying and selling, retailing, stock market, banking, and so on. News is generated rapidly and shared through social media, with individual news stories generating an untold number of links and connections. Citizen journalism has become an increasing influence within news gathering, as members of the public share information about news events as they are discovered. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and various blogs allow people to join in the sharing of information with a networking approach to news gathering. Many of these services have also redefined social relationships by creating a new form of tool for communicating with different parts of the general public. The internet also allows for direct electronic communication. People engage in instant messaging, voice and video chat, and emailing on a constant basis. This is not only a result of an advanced communication tool but also the foundations for relationship building. People may be able to enjoy video chat, with benefits such as viewing expressions and non-verbal behavior of the other person, while also sharing videos of an entertaining nature. It is about creating and participating in shared experiences. With the internet allowing instant sharing of photos and videos, the method to create and share user-generated content is considered to be the social aspects within the modern web.

4.2. Privacy and Security Concerns

Concerns about privacy and security have been magnified with the increased use of technology. Sharing private information with friends or colleagues or over the internet is becoming a norm for many people. Safety issues, security breaches, and the threat of identity theft are a few examples of privacy and security concerns. When accessing our bank accounts, for example, we use passwords or personal identification numbers (PINs) over a secure line to gain access to our accounts. Although it is inherently risky to place sensitive information in the hands of others, the probable losses are rapidly growing because of our dependence on using technology to store important information and to transmit it electronically. Common business-related privacy and security risks are eavesdropping, unauthorized access, theft, contract disputes, and fraud. The computer age seemed to promise a lot of things, including a reduction in paperwork, but that is not happening. On the contrary, businesses and people are subject to how technology is currently set up, so, to protect their investments, they must comply with numerous laws and standards. If anything, organizations are creating more documents than ever before. A number of organizations are hiring people strictly for security because privacy and security are issues that will not go away. Businesspeople don't get into business thinking about security. Now, with broader issues crowded around ever-present and ever-growing ethical discussions, there are fewer anointed gurus to settle the contents. Troubles or confusion engendered from these ethical dilemma expansions surface with such pedestrian questions as, where does the public's underlying need fit, relative to incremental public sector funding for basic versus applied versus development versus end-of-life technological solutions? The inherent difficulty lies within establishing acceptable trade-offs among the diverse and antagonistic sets of virtues and values present within the burgeoning industrial-ethical discourse. Coping with conflicting, entangled action plan priorities is not new, particularly regarding cutting-edge technologies that serve the public good.

6. Conclusion and Future Perspectives

So in conclusion, although technology certainly is connected with wealth creation and the efficiency of economies, its social or environmental repercussions can lead to growth in inequality or the threat to economies, hence de-linking wealth and human welfare. It becomes important either to predict the emergent problems of any new technology so that these do not cut off their future development or to solve the problems as they emerge. We must think hard about the impact of new technologies on our societies and on our lives so that we are able to make the right choices about the calibre of worlds we would like to live in. Clearly people stand to gain from advances in technology as well as the environment, but they should never become its victims. Since technology controls the circumstances of our lives, it is the design of the new technologies offered by the natural and human-made world which allow control over their accidental consequences. Indeed, this last theme is crucial to consider when we think – as we must – about the prospects for future technologies. Rather than thinking in a cyclical fashion about the current systems we have, let alone about the new systems we could have, we should worry not simply about those technologies we would like to develop, but also about those we do not want and think about the outcomes they may well produce. We clearly want to avoid certain developments. Thus we want to avoid wars of large scale to be fought, pandemics to strike, disasters to occur, or climate change to produce its serious impacts; we might think of ways technology could curtail these hazards. Clearly our wish list might be very different if we looked over a contemporary human era, or one from the time of Genghis Khan, or of the Mongol invasion of the medieval era.
