The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique is pleased to announce an exchange program opportunity for one semester (approximately five months) of undergraduate study at a U.S. college or university. Participants will be placed at a U.S. university in either the fall 2024 semester (August – December 2024) or spring 2025 semester (January to May 2025).

Program Design

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) provides a diverse group of emerging student leaders with a scholarship for one semester of non-degree academic study at a U.S. college or university. Global UGRAD is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State and aims to recruit participants from underrepresented backgrounds who have not had other opportunities to study in the United States. Successful applicants can expect an in-depth exposure to U.S. society, culture, and academic institutions, as well as opportunities to enhance their professional skills. All participants will be enrolled for one semester in full-time, non-degree, undergraduate coursework chosen from their host institution’s existing curriculum. Participants will be required to take one, 3-credit U.S. studies course to enhance their understanding of the United States. Participants will live in campus housing facilities with American peers and will be required to participate in 20 hours of community service. The program will include a pre-departure orientation presented by the U.S. Embassy, arrival orientation and end-of-program Workshop.

All academic fields of study are eligible. Per J-1 visa regulations, interested applicants in medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacology or other clinical fields of study should be made aware that direct patient care, including animal care, is not permitted, and therefore academic coursework and/or program activities at participating U.S. institutions may be limited.

Students cannot choose their host campus and will be placed at the most appropriate host campus based on their academic interests. The Global UGRAD Program includes a diverse roster of host campuses throughout the United States, including colleges and universities in rural and urban areas and Minority Serving Institutions. This is a non-degree program, so it is the students’ responsibility to check with their home institutions whether any credits accumulated during the Global UGRAD program will be transferred.

Global UGRAD provides one semester of pre-academic English language training to a limited number of students who need it. Students needing pre-academic English will receive virtual English language training during the fall semester of 2024 (August-December) and will be required to receive a minimum 61 TOEFL score before beginning the in-person component of their program. The academic portion will commence for all students in the spring semester of 2025 (January-May) in their fields of study.

Participant Eligibility

Global UGRAD is a merit-based competition. Students from diverse backgrounds and/or underrepresented groups from all over Mozambique are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a desire to participate in community service and leadership activities. Students must return to their home country after completion of the program. All fields of study are eligible, including social sciences, humanities, education, natural sciences, applied sciences, and mathematics.

Applicants must be:

  • Mozambican citizens, nationals or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid passport.
  • Between the ages of 18-25.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.  Only applicants selected as nominees are required to take the TOEFL and testing will be provided to them free of charge.  Applicants must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 48iBT to be considered. Students who score between 48-60 will be considered for the virtual English Language Training prior to the exchange portion of the program. Students must achieve a minimum score of 61 to be eligible to participate in the exchange portion of the program in the United States.
  •  Enrolled in their first, second, or third year in a full-time university bachelor’s degree  (Licenciatura)  program in Mozambique at the time of application, and in good academic standing.
  • Able to begin the academic exchange program in the United States in August 2024 or January 2025 if intensive English training is required.
  • Committed to returning to Mozambique after completion of the program.

Reminder : Global UGRAD is  NOT  a degree-granting program.   Participants must check with their home universities regarding whether credits accumulated during the program can be transferred.

Selection Process

Program is highly competitive and only a limited number of applicants from Mozambique will be selected. Applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria above to be considered. Qualified applicants will be interviewed in English by the U.S. Embassy Selection Committee in early 2024. Semi-finalists selected from this group will be required to take the TOEFL exam in Maputo or online afterwards. The U.S. Embassy will select nominees for the Global UGRAD Program based on leadership potential, commitment to civic engagement and community service, academic achievement, flexibility and adaptability, and interest in mutual understanding between Mozambique and the United States.   The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs will review global nominations and make the final selection of UGRAD participants. Results will be announced in/around March 2024.

  • Essay 1 and choice of Essay 2 or Essay 3
  • Letters of Recommendation (one must be from a professor familiar with your work in your field of study)*: World Learning provides reference forms on the application portal.
  • Official Academic Transcripts  for each year of university completed*
  • TOEFL or IELTS score report (if previously taken)
  • Copy of International Passport biographical page or National Identification (ID card)

*Unofficial English translations may be provided if available, but are not required until the selection.

The United States Embassy in Georgia is pleased to announce the competition for the 2024-25 Global Undergraduate Exchange ( Global UGRAD ) Program. Global UGRAD is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and administered by World Learning on behalf of ECA.

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program ( Global UGRAD ) provides a diverse group of emerging student leaders with a scholarship for one semester of non-degree academic study at a U.S. college or university. Global UGRAD is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State and aims to recruit participants from underrepresented backgrounds who have not had other opportunities to study in the United States. Successful applicants can expect an in-depth exposure to U.S. society, culture, and academic institutions, as well as opportunities to enhance their professional skills.

All participants will be enrolled for one semester in full-time, non-degree, undergraduate coursework chosen from their host institution’s existing curriculum. Participants will be required to take one, 3-credit U.S. studies course to enhance their understanding of the United States. Participants will live in campus housing facilities with American peers and will be required to participate in 20 hours of community service. There will also be a virtual arrival orientation and an in-person end-of-program workshop.

This year we are also offering a special program designed for students from the South Caucasus, which will include special orientations and workshops for this cohort.  Successful UGRAD applicants will be invited to participate in this program after the interview stage.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be a citizen of the country in which they apply for the Global UGRAD Program.
  • Applicants must be studying in the country in which they apply for the Global UGRAD Program.
  • Scholarships will be granted to students who currently are enrolled in full-time undergraduate programs only, having completed a minimum of one semester of study by January 2024.
  • Participants must have at least one year remaining in their undergraduate studies at their home institutions upon completion of the Global UGRAD Program.
  • Applicants should demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
  • Applicants must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 48iBT to be considered. Students who score between 48-60 will be considered for the virtual English Language Training prior to the exchange portion of the program. Students must achieve a minimum score of 61 to be eligible to participate in the exchange portion of the program in the United States.
  • Preference will be given to those who have had little or no experience in the United States or outside of their home countries.
  • Applicants are required to return directly to their home country after the completion of the program.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the program’s start.

Application and Program Timeline:

Applications will be accepted from November 1, 2023, to December 15, 2023, for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Participants will be placed at a U.S. university in either the fall 2024 semester (August – December 2024) or spring 2025 semester (January to May 2025).

2024-2025 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program

There will also be an arrival orientation and an in-person end-of-program workshop.

The Global UGRAD Program does not assist with credit transfers between participants’ host and home institutions. Any credit transfers are the sole responsibility of the participants.

All academic fields of study are eligible. Per J-1 visa regulations, applicants interested in medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, pharmacology or other clinical fields of study should note that direct patient care, including animal care, is not permitted, and therefore academic coursework and/or program activities at participating U.S. institutions may be limited.

Students cannot choose their host institution in the U.S. and will be placed at the most appropriate host institution based on their academic interests.

Financial Support

Global UGRAD is a fully funded exchange program that covers students’ travel to/from the United States, university tuition, room and board, health insurance, required books, and monthly stipend for incidental expenses. Participants will live in campus housing facilities with American peers and will be required to participate in twenty hours of community service.

Eligibility Requirements for Uzbekistan

Competition for the Global UGRAD Exchange Program is merit-based and open to anyone who:

  • is at least 18 years old at the start of the program;
  • is a citizen of Uzbekistan, currently residing and studying in Uzbekistan;
  • is currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in good standing at any accredited university, public or private, in Uzbekistan;
  • has completed at least one semester of study prior to starting their Global UGRAD program;
  • will have at least one academic year to complete at their home institution after the Global UGRAD program;
  • can demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities;
  • can demonstrate English language proficiency; finalists and alternate candidates will be required to take TOEFL iBT to be considered. The cost of the TOEFL exam will be covered by the program .
  • is able to begin studies in the United States in August 2024 (fall semester) or January 2025 (spring semester);
  • is committed to returning directly to their home country after the completion of the program;
  • is eligible to receive the U.S. student exchange visa (J-1).
Preference will be given to those who have had little or NO experience in the United States or outside of their home countries. Individuals who have participated in an exchange program sponsored or funded by the U.S. government for a period of more than six weeks and who have not fulfilled their two-year home residency requirement by the time of application are not eligible.

Individuals in the following circumstances are NOT eligible for the Global UGRAD Program:

  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the United States;
  • Individuals currently studying, residing, or working outside of Uzbekistan;
  • Individuals currently in their final year of undergraduate studies;
  • Alumni of the Global UGRAD Exchange Program;
  • Local employees of the U.S. missions who work for the U.S. Department of State and/or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); employees are also ineligible for one year following the termination of employment;
  • Immediate family members (i.e., spouses and children) of U.S. Department of State and USAID employees; family members are also ineligible for one year following the employee’s termination of employment;

In 2010, the Global Undergraduate Semester Exchange Program - Pakistan (Global UGRAD-Pakistan) was launched by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the United States Department of State. The program in Pakistan is administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and in the United States by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX).

Within a short span, the Global UGRAD has gained immense popularity among Pakistani university-going students. The first batch of 100 fellows of the 2010-11 Global UGRAD-Pakistan returned to Pakistan to complete their undergraduate degrees at Pakistani universities.

The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) especially seeks applications from individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and remote areas who would not otherwise have such an opportunity. Women, minorities and people with disabilities are also especially encouraged to apply.

Application Process

Applications are submitted online through the USEFP website. You will need to create an account, fill out the application form, and submit the required documents (transcripts & certificates).

Typically, the application requires academic transcripts (including the most recent one confirming your CGPA), a personal statement, and certificates for any extracurricular activities within the last 5 years.

What is Global UGRAD?

Global UGRAD is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State and aims to recruit participants from underrepresented backgrounds who have not had other opportunities to study in the United States. Successful applicants can expect an in-depth exposure to U.S. society, culture, and academic institutions, as well as opportunities to enhance their professional skills.

Program Components

Students selected for the Global UGRAD program cannot choose their host institution and will be placed at the most appropriate host institution based on their academic interests. The program has two cohorts, fall cohort taking place between September and December and spring cohort between January and May. Exact program dates vary depending on the academic schedule of the assigned U.S. host university.

All participants will be enrolled for one semester in full-time undergraduate coursework chosen from their host institution’s existing curriculum. Participants will be required to take one, 3-credit U.S. studies course to enhance their understanding of the United States. Participants will live in campus housing facilities with American peers and will be required to participate in 20 hours of community service. There will also be a virtual arrival orientation and an in-person end-of-program workshop.

Failure to meet the academic requirements of the university and Global UGRAD program (poor grades, failure to submit assignments or attend class) may result in dismissal from Global UGRAD. One-semester English language training can be provided prior to the start of the academic studies for a limited number of students whose English ability is lower (be able to score TOEFL IBT 48-60) but otherwise qualified. These students are often from rural provinces, disabled or have other strong extenuating circumstances. English training takes place in fall semesters. For these students who are required to take English training, they would leave Mongolia in the fall semester and would start their academic studies in the spring semester. Their time in the U.S. would therefore be one academic year.

This is a non-degree program, so it is the students’ responsibility to check with their home institutions whether any credits accumulated during the Global UGRAD program will be transferable to their universities in Mongolia.

Expenses Covered

Global UGRAD is full scholarship, and the scholarship covers:

  • All Transportation Costs: International airfare and domestic travel (including in-country visa-related travels if the candidate resides outside Ulaanbaatar)
  • Living and Meals Accommodations: Participants are placed in university housing and are provided with modest meals and incidental expenses allowance
  • Health Insurance: Participants are provided with accident and sickness benefit for the duration of their program
  • Visa Costs: Visa payment is waived for all U.S. Government sponsored scholarship participants
  • Travel Allowance: Participants are provided with small allowance for luggage and other travel-related expenses.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a Mongolian undergraduate student at an accredited university in Mongolia
  • Have completed a minimum of one semester of study by January 2024
  • Have at least one year remaining in their undergraduate studies at their home institutions upon completion of the Global UGRAD Program
  • Be between the ages of 18-24 at the time of the program’s start
  • Be proficient in English (be able to score a minimum of TOEFL IBT 48 to be considered. Students who score between 48-60 will be considered for the virtual English Language Training prior to the exchange portion of the program. Students must achieve a minimum score of 61 to be eligible to participate in the exchange portion of the program in the United States)
  • Have a GPA of no less than 3.0
  • Demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities
  • Preference will be given to those who have had little or no experience in the United States or outside of their home countries.  Mongolians holding U.S. green card are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants are required to return directly to their home country after the completion of the program.

How to Apply

In order to apply for the Global UGRAD program, the applicant will follow the steps below:

  • Register on the World Learning Student Portal: worldlearning.org
  • Complete and submit the online application (please note that all students must be registered with the portal in order to access the online application)

A complete application package includes:

  • Complete online application
  • Academic transcripts for all years of university study (with English translations)
  • Two letters of reference (with English translations)
  • The official English test (TOEFL/IBT) report, if available.

Submit the completed application and any supplemental documents via the online portal within the deadline.

Things to remember when filling out an application:

  • Application must be completed in English in electronic format.
  • Applicants must answer all questions in the application form. Incomplete applications will be deemed technically ineligible. No questions can be left blank. Put N/A if not applicable.
  • Application must be typed. Hand-written applications will be disqualified.
  • Essays must be your own work reflecting your original thought. Other people’s works/ideas used anywhere in the application must be properly noted.
  • Please note any word or character limit for essay portions of the application and give your answers within the limit.
  • Two reference letters should be obtained from your high school or university teachers.
  • Please note that the reference letters must be in English. If the reference letter is provided in Mongolian, please provide a certified English translation.
  • All reference letters must include full contact information of the reference provider including: Full name, title, work address, email address and work and mobile phone numbers

The online application deadline is December 15, 2023. The Embassy will announce application results in January 2024 and will notify all applicants via email.  Any inquiries about the program will not be answered via phone.  Please direct all inquiries to [email protected] .

Selection Process

All U.S. Government scholarship programs are merit-based. Although we take into account special circumstances of candidates such as disability, disadvantaged background, or any other notable characteristics, final decision is made based on the candidate’s overall strength as represented by the application quality and interview. We also consider one’s ability to be a cultural ambassador and his/her ability and motivation to give back to the community.

Following are the main steps for selection for the Global UGRAD program:

Technical Screening : This is the initial review to verify the completeness of the applications. During technical screening, we check to see two main things:

  • If applications and any required supplemental documents are complete
  • If applicants meet all the eligibility requirements

Application Review : After technical screening, all complete applications are then reviewed by an application review committee. During this process, each application gets to be reviewed by a minimum of three people.

Short List : Based on the recommendations of the application review committee, an interview short list is created. Candidates who are included in the short list are then invited for an in-person interview.

Interview : An interview panel consisting of representatives of the U.S. Embassy and other academic professionals interview all short-listed candidates and select finalists to be nominated for the global competition.

Nomination : Finalists selected from the interview are then nominated by the embassy to the Global UGRAD Program Office in Washington D.C. where they will compete with nominations from embassies from around the world.

Final Selection : If selected from the global competition, the candidate is confirmed to participate in the program.
