Arvada West football dominates Fountain-Fort Carson in Zero Week
Wildcats with five rushing tds in big opening victory.
ARVADA — Arvada West junior Adrian Symalla put the icing on the cake in the Wildcats’ football opener Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.
“I knew I was going to have that cutback lane, that is what we planned for,” Symalla said of his long touchdown run. “I saw green and had to go.”
Symalla also had a 50-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play in the second half for A-West.
“I’ve seen this group grow,” A-West coach Brad Pyatt said. “A lot of this group played last year. At the end of last season we were making great strides. There was a big culture switch with this group. A lot of love on this team.”
A-West is coming off a 5-6 record last season where league rivals Columbine, Chatfield and Ralston Valley all advanced to the 5A state semifinals. The Wildcats hit the road next week to face Mountain Range on Friday, Aug. 30.
“We are just getting started,” Symalla said. “We have a few more years to go. We are still a young team. I’m excited.”
Symalla and fellow junior running back Jaiden Green combined for more than 2,000 yards on the ground last year as sophomores. Green also had a huge game against the Trojans with a trio of touchdown runs of 4, 15 and 3 yards.
A-West returning starting quarterback — junior Logan Duhachek — also threw a pair of touchdowns to junior Noah Meurer as the Wildcats put up seven touchdowns against Fountain-Fort Carson.
“Logan (Duhachek) is playing way better than he ever has,” Symalla said. “The line is blocking and then the running backs can do their jobs.”
FFC finished with an 8-4 record last year, losing to eventual state champion Columbine in the second round of the 5A state tournament.
A-West responded with a solid 9-play, 96-yard touchdown drive capped off by Green’s second touchdown of the first half.
“Our offense has grown so much from last year,” A-West senior captain and defensive lineman Vince Vigil said. “Going into this game I knew we had a really good group. We are ready for next week and ready for things to come.”
The Wildcats’ defense also returns a lot of talent in Vigil, junior linebacker Jaxon Pyatt and Kevin Sanchez leading the way. Senior defensive linemen Daniel D’Amico and Christian Knightwalker both harassed Camba all night long.
“This is a huge win for us,” Vigil said. “I’m so proud of this team. We had a lot of dudes step up today. Everyone was a part of this win.”
A-West forced three turnovers and gave up just one offensive touchdown that the Trojans scored off a Wildcat turnover that gave FFC the ball on A-West’s 10-yard line. The only other score for FFC was a 97-yard kickoff return by junior Justyn Jordan during the running clock in the fourth quarter.
“That is going to be our identity this year,” Vigil said of the Wildcats’ physical nature on defense. “We are boogiemen and that is what we are going to do.”
'I haven't seen it': Ryan Walters learns about 'harmful' assignment, Skiatook Supt. speaks out
SKIATOOK, Okla. — The Skiatook Public Schools Superintendent talked to 2 News about the research assignment which asked students "Is God real?"
2 News also talked about the assignment with State Superintendent Ryan Walters who said he didn't know about it before we asked him. .
This was the first assignment that seemed to bring the Bible into the classroom. Some parents wondered if similar assignments would appear more under Walters' leadership.
"I haven't seen it," Walters said. "Look, here's the reality. What we've seen in the classroom is the radical left attack, any mention of God, any mention of the Bible."
Skiatook's Superintendent Rick Loggins said the assignment was not up to their standards.
"World religions are taught in world history but that was not the unit that they were in. So, when we saw the assignment the high school principal met with the teacher. Discussed that with him and asked him to remove the assignment," said Loggins.
The assignment shocked Olivia Gray, her daughter was in the class. She talked to 2 News about the assignment:
She said it was harmful to people like her daughter, who is of native descent.
"My daughter is descended from many people who are forced into residential schools and Christianity was weaponized and so it just feels very unsafe for us," Gray said.
She said the problems start at the top at a state level not with the district.
"They need to really focus their attention and their energy on making sure we’re not 50th in the nation for education. Like they just really have other things that they need to work on besides indoctrinating children," Gray said.

She criticized Walters for confusing the message on what teachers can teach. She said his support for putting the Bible in schools blurred the lines and created fear for students of other religions. Her daughter Nettie Gray said the research paper was confusing and she felt uncomfortable when it was assigned. "In the past brought up the word religion, they’re always like if you’re uncomfortable about this type of topic, just let me know and we won’t talk about it, but he just went straight to the point," said Nettie.
2 News took Nettie's concerns to Walters.
"That's why we gave those additional guidelines. There will be more guidance is coming out as well. The districts, and that's where, you know, we tried to be crystal clear," said Walter.
But it wasn’t crystal clear with the assignment sparking more questions about the future of education in Oklahoma.
Loggins said he invited the Gray family to have a conversation about the assignment. They had that meeting Aug. 21.
He said they’re working to make sure all academic content meets their educational standards.
2 News sent the assignment to Walters, back hasn't heard back.

Public school history assignment asking if God is real sparks controversy
SKIATOOK, Okla. (KJRH) – An Oklahoma school district is under scrutiny after a parent posted a photo of one of her daughter’s assignments that asked for opinions about religion.
The research paper prompted students to answer questions such as, “Is God real?”
Olivia Gray made the post, which has now been shared a couple hundred times.
She called the world history assignment from Skiatook High School an overall disappointment.
“I fear for the kids here [at the school] who belong to a different faith,” Gray said.
However, Gray said she wasn’t surprised to see this happen, especially after recent controversies about religion in public schools.
Oklahoma’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters said the Bible “will absolutely be discussed, it will be taught in the classroom.”
Gray said she didn’t realize the religious instruction would be so blatant.
“I didn’t know it was gonna happen this fast, and I didn’t know it would be that in-your-face. I thought it would be a little sneakier,” Gray said.
Gray was first made aware of the assignment when her daughter Nettie, a sophomore at the high school, brought it up.
Not only did Nettie find the assignment confusing, but she also said she was afraid to even answer the questions for fear of retaliation.
“Like if I didn’t give the answer he [the teacher] wanted to hear, I’m like, he might give me a lower grade,” Nettie said.
Nettie said her friends who have different world history teachers weren’t given that assignment.
Nettie’s older sister Olivia Ramirez, a graduate of Skiatook High School, said it was out of line.
“When you get to questions like, ‘Is God real?’ ‘Is Satan real?’ I don’t even know how I would’ve answered that at that age, let alone try to cite that and find sources for a paper I was going to be graded on,” Ramirez said.
Skiatook High School’s communications director has not returned requests for comment.
However, the district has released a statement saying it became aware of the assignment through social media.
Administrators determined the presentation of the material was not conducive to its instructional plan.
The statement went on to say that administration and staff will continue to collaborate on best practices to meet Oklahoma’s academic standards.
