Rutgers has only asked for a personal statement and no SOP. What do they expect?

I'm applying to Rutgers for graduate school in physics. Their application form only asks for a personal statement instead of a statement of purpose. In this case, do I write the PS like a SOP and include technicalities like my research experience or do I stay with the conventional format of a PS?

While the latter seems to be what they've asked for, there is no other place where I can describe my research in detail. At the same time, I don't want to make it too technical when that isn't what they're looking for.
