Finding open research

There are many ways to find open research. Whether you are searching for something specific or resources on a topic, it’s best to begin your search in Library SEARCH or the Library databases , as these contain both subscription resources and open research. Tips for effective searching in the databases are on the Starting your research page.

Beyond Library SEARCH and the Library databases, these are some additional tools and resources that will help you to locate open research.

Open access repositories

An open access repository is a database of theses, articles and other research which is openly available, and allows you to search by keyword or topic. The following are a small selection of open access repositories:

  • Research Online is UOW’s open access repository and contains a selection of works produced by UOW authors.
  • CORE is a collection of open access research papers, indexed from journals and repositories worldwide.
  • BASE is a collection or academic resources, indexed from journals, repositories and digital collections worldwide.
  • DOAJ is an index of open access, scholarly journals from around the world.
  • DOAB is an index of open access, scholarly, peer-reviewed books from around the world.

Finding theses & dissertations

Theses and dissertations are produced by Postgraduate and PhD students worldwide. While some theses and dissertations go on to be published works in books or journal articles, most are available only through institutional repositories.

If you’re looking for a specific thesis or dissertation and you know which university it was completed through, you can go directly to their institutional repository to search. University of Wollongong PhD theses are available in Research Online . The following databases allow you to search for theses or dissertations by topic or keywords:

  • ProQuest dissertations & theses global  for theses and dissertations from around the world
  • Trove Search: Research & Reports : for Australian theses via the National Library of Australia’s Trove. Select 'Thesis' as the format type
  • Additional resources are available in our Finding Australian and international theses online guide.

Using browser extensions

Browser extensions are tools that you add to your web browser to assist with locating articles. They work by redirecting you from a paywalled article to the open access version, where available. There are a few different browser extensions available, so you may want to test them out and see which you prefer to use:

  • EndNote Click connects you to both UOW-subscribed content and open access versions where available.
  • Unpaywall connects you to open access versions of papers where available.
  • Open Access Button connects you to open access versions of papers where available.

Still can’t find it?

If you’re still unable to locate a copy of the article, thesis or book chapter that you’re looking for, you can request a copy through the Library’s document delivery service.

Finding open data

Searching for open data can be complex as it may be published in a variety of locations including repositories, archives and websites. Understanding what data you require can help you develop an efficient and effective search strategy. More information can be found on our Statistics and data guide .

Finding open educational resources (OER)

Much like open data, OER can be found in a variety of locations, depending on who has produced the resource.

If you’re interested in finding OER for use in your teaching, information is available in our Support for teaching and learning: open educational resources  guide.

Behaviour of energisation transients of high voltage (HV) underground cable system can be established through carefully crafted simulation studies. This information is useful for design engineers to ensure that protection and insulation co-ordination are able to meet design criteria. This paper presents an assessment of the validity and applicability of existing cable models in PSCAD/EMTDC to study energisation transients of HV cable systems. The models considered are the distributed parameter travelling wave models (FD-Phase and FD-Mode models). Their performance is analysed through comparison of simulated results with measured current transient behaviour during the energisation of a 132 kV, 5.6 km underground cable system. The results obtained from FD-Phase model demonstrate acceptable agreement with experimental data, whereas the simulation results of FD-Mode model predicted slightly lower transient peak magnitudes. Both models give reasonable settling time of the corresponding transient envelope.

It is a well-accepted fact that the protection of power system equipment is very crucial in order to ensure sustainability of electrical energy delivery. Each equipment is subjected to different types of surges and these surges can be of different amplitudes and frequencies. Depending on the severity of the transient surges, the equipment might experience very severe damages and also can cause further disruption to the overall electrical network. Failure of underground cables has always been a major concern for the electrical power distribution industries. Fault location and repair of faulty cables are expensive and time-consuming. Overvoltage phenomena such as line switching, load rejection and fault produce high frequency transients that could affect the performance of an underground cable and also the network that it is connected to. Therefore it is important to identify the factors that dictate the behaviour of a transient signal travelling along the cable. This paper will look into the simulation studies on transient behaviour when the characteristics representing the insulation of underground cables are varied. By identifying the causes that contribute to the change of cable characteristics, the effects they have on the simulated transient can be examined thoroughly. © 2013 IEEE. http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?arnumber=6564573

A mathematical model suitable for the analysis of travelling-wave phenomena in underground power-transmission systems is presented. The model is developed in terms of a generalised angular frequency, and may therefore be applied to the solution of steady-state problems or, by means of Fourier-transform techniques, to the solution of transient problems. The model takes into account skin effect in the conductors and in the soil. It is then shown how the system model may be analysed using multiconductor-transmission-line theory to give the transient response of the cable system. The wave-propagation characteristics are given for the natural modes of a certain cable system. These characteristics are examined with a view to their implications on transient phenomena. In this work, the transient over – voltage phenomena occurred at 34.5 kV AC underground cable transmission systems during the closure of the underground cables is to be studied and simulated by using MATLAB program. Then, the transient voltage occurred at the underground cables is analyzed by using modified Fourier transform. The studied systems of underground cables are firstly modeled in frequency domain. Transient voltages induced at the sending-end and receiving-end terminals of an underground cable of transmission system are calculated in frequency domain and using inverse Fourier Transform, the sending end and receiving end voltages are obtained by converting to time domain. The effects of cable length and source impedance on transient over – voltage phenomena at underground cables are investigated. Also, the effects of GIBBS factor in transients are researched in order to eliminate GIBBS oscillations. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the transient voltages i...

The transient behaviour of a straight wire buried in a lossy ground due to a transient plane wave is presented in the paper. A frequency domain model is based on the thin wire antenna theory and on the solution of the related Pocklington integral equation. The transient response of the buried wire is obtained by means of the inverse Fourier transform. Time domain energy measures involving spatial integration of the squared current and charge induced along the wires are used to analyze the obtained time domain waveform
