"The UGC has approved that an extension of up to six months beyond June 30 may be given to MPhil and Ph D students for thesis submission by their respective higher education institutions on a case-to-case basis based on the review of the students' work by the Research Advisory Committee and on the recommendation of the supervisor and head of a department," the UGC official said to PTI.

UGC extends deadline for submission of MPhil, PhD thesis

Ugc has announced further extension of six months for the submission of thesis by mphil and phd students..

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday announced further extension of six months for the submission of thesis by MPhil and PhD students. “Extension of six months, may also be granted for submitting evidence of publication and presentation in two conferences. However, tenure of fellowship will remain upto five years only,” the UGC notice reads.

“In continuation to UGC Public Notice dated 16 March, 2021 on the above mentioned subject, and keeping in view the larger interest of the research scholars, a further extension of six months beyond 31.12.2021, i.e., till 30th June 2022, for submission of thesis by M.Phil/Ph.D. students may be granted by the Universities,” the UGC has said.

“It is also notified that the extension for submission of M.Phil./Ph.D. thesis till June, 2022 shall be applicable to all such students whose due date of submission of M.Phil./ Ph.D. thesis is on or before 30 June 2022,” it has added.

UGC allows another extension for submission of M.Phil or Ph.D thesis

The extension has been granted in view of the study time lost due to COVID-19.

Universities and higher educational institutions can give another extension of up to six months beyond 30 June for M.Phil or Ph.D thesis submission on case-to-case basis after reviewing a student's work, an official of the University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Monday.

The first extension was granted in June, 2020 and extended further every six months due to prevailing the COVID-19 situation.

''The UGC has approved that an extension of up to six months beyond June 30 may be given to M.Phil and Ph.D students for thesis submission by their respective higher educational institutions on case-to-case basis based on the review of the students' work by the Research Advisory Committee and on recommendation of the supervisor and head of department,'' the UGC official said.

COVID-affected batches demand extension of deadline for PhD thesis submission; will file petition in HC

MPhil and PhD students from central universities across the county have been demanding an extension for the submission of their thesis. The earlier deadline set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the submission ends tomorrow, December 31. However, students have been requesting for an extension owing to the restrictions imposed on them during the COVID pandemic. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) earlier called for a protest in solidarity with the demand for an extension by terminal MPhil and PhD batches of the university on December 19. Following protests and multiple representations, students informed EdexLive, that an extension of one month, until January 31, 2023, was granted yesterday, December 29. "We can't call this an extension. We can call it a grace period because we need time at least till March 2023," said Satyajit, an MPhil student from JNU. He recalled that a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court earlier regarding the same demand. However, it has been "temporarily withdrawn", he said. The petition which EdexLive has a copy of, prayed to the court to, "Pass an appropriate order, direction, or writ in the nature of mandamus or any other appropriate writ to direct the Respondents to extend the deadline for submission of thesis/dissertations beyond December 31, 2022 for a period not less than six months to the Petitioner in order to meet the requirement of M.Phil degree." However, the court sought to withdraw the petition after stating that submission of Dissertations/Theses by terminal MPhil/PhD students has already been extended by one month until January 31, 2023. Students informed EdexLive that they would file a fresh petition on January 2, 2023 challenging this and demanding a further extension. Why are students demanding an extension? An MPhil student from JNU stated that owing to the COVID pandemic, their two year course was compressed into three month semesters. "The session started in January 2021 but ended in July 2022. We had a gap of two to three months in between. Most of our session was covered in online mode. We did not have any peer-to-peer discussion during this time. I was interested in learning about research methods so that I can proceed with my thesis but the ecosystem did not allow me to," said Satyajit. He also stated that once the campus reopened for offline classes, he realised that he couldn't write in a way that met the requirements of an academic paper. "I was only able to write 500 words a day even though I was reading a lot. It takes time to learn how to write a 40,000 word thesis with the proper references, sources and so on," he said. The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA), JNU released a statement on December 17, reminding the JNU administration of the perils individuals faced during the pandemic. BAPSA further stated,"...the administration has unfairly asked the terminal PhD and MPhil students of JNU to either avail 9B according to the ordinance or vacate the hostel by December 31." The statement also criticised the protest by JNUSU on December 19 as too late for these students who are already under a lot of stress and anxiety with the deadline only less than two weeks away.   Several students and student-led associations too took to Twitter to show solidarity with students. "Phd scholars were not able to pursue their field work or due processes during the two years pandemic lockdown. If they are not given the extension they will lose their effort they put forth for the research. @ugc_india must look into it to grant considerable extension," said the Fraternity Movement on Twitter. "My field work stopped in March 2020 and I could resume it only in August 2021 due to lockdown and other movement restrictions in the state. I couldn't work for 1.5 years. I need extension," said Asha Sasidharan (@AshaSasidharan5) on Twitter. MPs speak up Former Education Minister of Kerala ET Mohammed Basheer wrote a letter to the Education Minister and UGC Chairman, addressing the students' concerns. He extended his support for students of all batches from 2014 to 2020 who faced academic loss during the COVID lockdown and requested the UGC Chairman for an extension of two years. Acknowledging that the UGC had previously approved an extended time to terminal students for submission of PhD thesis, he said that the, "benefit of UGC’s positive decision could be availed by some batches, and not by all the batches affected by the pandemic," according to reports. Additionally, R Krishnaiah, MP, Rajya Sabha wrote a letter to UGC Chairman which EdexLive has a copy of. He stated that, "PhD and MPhil scholars have been struggling to cope up with the impact of the COVID pandemic. Hence, I request you to provide a six-month extension...as the lockdowns affected field work and lab work."

Therefore, the students have not been able to conduct their research or experiments in the university laboratories nor they were able to access library services that are critical for completion of thesis," UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted a six month extension for submission of thesis to MPhil and Phd students in wake of prolonged closure of universities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier, the students were granted extension till December 31. However, the same has been extended till June 30 now but the tenure of fellowship for PhD and MPhil will remain the same–5 years.

"Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the universities have remained closed for the past several months. Therefore, the students have not been able to conduct their research or experiments in the university laboratories nor they were able to access library services that are critical for completion of thesis," UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said. The UGC had on April 29 issued guidelines on examination and academic calendar for the universities in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown. As per these guidelines, extension of six months was conveyed for MPhil and PhD students who were to submit their dissertation or thesis.

"In view of the above and in the larger interest of the research scholars, a further extension of six months for terminal MPhil and PhD students, who were supposed to submit their thesis by December 31, may be granted by the universities till June 30. "Extension of six months, as mentioned above, may also be granted for submitting evidence of publication and presentation in two conferences. However, the tenure of fellowship of MPhil and PhD will be the same (5 years)," he added. Universities were closed in March in order to contain spread of novel coronavirus. A nationwide lockdown was announced later. The Centre has permitted phase wise reopening of varsities and colleges for research scholars and final year students while majority teaching learning activities continue to be be done online. The decision about reopening of varsities and higher educational institutions has been left to state governments.

UGC: Ph.D., MPhil Thesis Submission Date Extended till June 2022: Check Official Notice Here

December 02, 2021:  University Grants Commission, UGC has extended the last date for project and thesis submission for MPhil and Ph.D. students till June 2022. The extension is applicable for students whose due date for thesis submission was December 31, 2021. 

As per the latest notice released on December 01, 2021, the University Grants Commission stated that extension is offered to students in view of the larger interest of research scholars. With this decision, students have been given an extension of six months. 

The UGC official notice further states that the extension is also applicable for students, whose last date for MPhil and Ph.D. thesis submission is June 2022 in various UGC affiliated colleges and universities. 

Additionally, an extension of six months is also granted for submitting evidence of publication and presentation in two conferences to Ph.D. and M.Phil students. Students will now have to submit their publication materials and presentation on or before June 30, 2021. 

"In continuation to UGC Public Notice dated March 16, 2021, and keeping in view the larger interest of the research scholars, a further extension of six months beyond December 31, 2021; i.e. until June 30, 2022, for submission of the thesis by MPhil/Ph.D. students may be granted by the Universities".

"It is also notified that the extension for submission of M.Phil./Ph.D. thesis till June 2022 shall be applicable to all such students whose due date of submission of MPhil/Ph.D. thesis is on or before, June 30, 2022," the official notice reads. 

University Grants Commission has extended the last date for submission of thesis for affiliated university and college students twice before. The extension was offered to students due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic in the country. 

In addition to the extension notice, the UGC has also released a recent notice for Common Entrance Test (CET) 2022. As per the notice, the CET entrance examination for both UG and PG students for academic session 2022-2023 will be conducted by the National Testing Agency. 

Students who are now preparing to appear for CET 2022 examination are advised to keep a tab on the official website of the Union Grants Commission for latest examination updates at https://www.ugc.ac.in.
