Theal Movie Review: Haphazard writing troubles this otherwise impressive Prabhudheva vehicle
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
A promise of hope to the hopeless or love to the loveless has the potential to change lives for the best or worst. How grateful or threatened would a man, who has long foregone all hope, love, and jest for life, be when such a promise comes unexpectedly? In Theal , director Harikumar has adapted the story of Kim Ki-duk's Pieta (there's a tribute card in the beginning) and has created a film that explores the above-mentioned theme for over two hours.
The story is set in the Koyambedu market in Chennai. Money lending is an integral part of this vibrant marketplace, due to which loan sharks seem to be a big menace. Here, Dorai (Prabhudheva) works as a ruthless, cold-hearted henchman to one such loan shark named Paulraj (Shatru). All is fine for Dorai until a woman (Easwari Rai) barges into his house and claims that she is his mother. This sends Dorai's reality into a spiral, and what happened next makes the rest of the story.
Director: Harikumar
Cast: Prabhudheva, Easwari Rao, Samyuktha Hegde, Yogi Babu
A few minutes into Theal , it already begins to feel like an unusual film. The first surprise is that the lead character Dorai isn't a hero but rather an anti-hero. When we first see him, he casually barges into houses of people who owe money and beat them to a pulp. In one such instance, the wife of a defaulter locks her husband in a room, takes off her saree, and pleads Dorai to 'take her' and leave her husband alone. You can imagine the ways this scene would have panned out in a usual star vehicle. Here, Dorai gets even more agitated at this action and begins to beat her with a rolled-up calendar. Dorai consistently indulges in such dark eccentricities throughout the film, and in parallell, we are also shown his everyday life on a closer level to get a sense of who he is.
Living in a small, untidy apartment in the underbelly of the city, Dorai's world seems desolate, lost, and yet, tunnelled. Dorai doesn't interact with anyone, neither his boss nor his victims, and he lets actions do the talk. He works during the day, and at night, he watches a wildlife show, drinks, and goes off to sleep. Interestingly, the events on that wildlife show reflect the day he just had. For instance, after he gets attacked by a gang of goons, we see a bunch of buffalos ripping apart a leopard. On an odd night, he sleeps with a bar dancer named Thilaka (Samyuktha Hegde) and pays her money afterwards. The catch? Thilaka isn't doing it for money but is in love with him. This once again establishes what Dorai thinks of himself: as someone who believes that he is unlovable or that he doesn't deserve to be loved. What essentially happens through all these scenes is that we buy who the character is without even a backstory to why he is like this. The characterisation of Dorai, the titular Scorpion reference, its reverse anthropomorphism, and the events that transpire do make one wonder if Harikumar was heavily inspired by Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film Drive . Like the lead character there, Dorai too has a nasty sting to him. Dorai might look lost even during a casual stroll down the road, but you can bet that he has an eye in the back of his head, almost like it's his second nature.
While such interesting details continue in Theal , they aren't enough to make it an engaging watch. Theal suffers from the lack of a solid conflict. After Easwari Rao enters the stage, it becomes a gritty, dark drama for some time, but there is no real quest for a major portion of the film. While the film keeps hinting at a showdown between Dorai and a lead antagonist, it is so delayed that we lose interest. Further, Theal is that odd film that required more red herring sub-plots to keep us invested. Instead, we get some poorly written scenes for Thilaka and her brother (Yogi Babu). While one of these is an intended dialogue exposition of why Thilaka loves Dorai, the others follow the age-old comedy routine with unfunny jokes and no relevance.
Beyond a point, Theal sadly becomes a highly predictable watch. A few convenient turns and logical loopholes also add up to the tally. What keeps us going here are the convincing performances by Prabhudheva and Easwari Rao, and the brilliant visuals. This is a Prabhudheva I wish I could see more often. He doesn't grin or visibly smile even once, and like him, Easwari too holds the required expressive meter for a long part of the film. Even in the portions that do come across as melodramatic, something about these performances keeps us invested. Harikumar's world in Theal looks gorgeous with neon lights, warmer grading, and low contrast, desaturated colours. For these reasons and more, this Pongal release might have a few surprising stings here and there, even if it doesn't entirely impress you.

Theal Review: Prabhu Deva, Eeswari Rao are solid in this tacky yet touching drama
Adaptations of foreign films into the tamil language have always been risky business, but hari kumar has successfully put together an efficient film in theal..
A still from Theal.
Theal | Director: Hari Kumar
Cast: Prabhu Deva, Eeswari Rao, Samyuktha Hegde, Yogi Babu, Shatru
Runtime: 1 hour 55 minutes | Language: Tamil | Rating: 3
Adaptations of foreign films into the Tamil language have always been risky business as they have mostly worked out in the wrong ways than the right ones, but Hari Kumar has successfully put together an efficient film in Theal, which is the last of the lot to hit the screens for the Pongal weekend. The Prabhu Deva starrer, based on Kim Ki Duk’s Korean drama Pieta, is a drowsy yet impactful film based on a mother-son relationship.
Durai (Prabhu Deva) is a man who works for a loan shark Paulraj (Shatru). Paulraj earns big by lending money to people at the Koyambedu market, but when they fail to return it with the interest, he calls Durai who in turn beats them up and takes their wealth to break even. Durai is a zero in his personal life, living a solitary life that finds company in food, alcohol and violence. However, his dark life takes a big turn when an elderly woman turns up at his door and claims that she is his mother. Durai is not able to accept the fact at first, pushing her away and even beating her up. But as time passes, he develops an affection towards her, which then instills a change in his day-to-day behaviour as well.
Theal has a very interesting premise that captures our attention. Hari Kumar’s presentation is extremely basic, reminding us of films that came out ten years ago. The director does not glue in any new techniques in the making process, uses a very worn out color tone and does his best to bring about the theme of the film by the essence of its visuals alone. After establishing the storyline in the first 30 minutes, he sows many gut-wrenching scenes between Prabhu Deva and Eeswari Rao into the film, which are a little tough to watch but do create an impact whatsoever. It is this range of tension that Harikumar creates that helps us invest our attention in Theal, but at the same time, it does not come without the commercial compromises which are a scare for a film in this region. There’s also a sense that the film is a bit artificial towards the end, which sucks out the actual impact that it holds in hand.
Diluting Theal from its source content are the romance and comedy tracks that are put into it, involving Yogi Babu and Samyukhtha Hegde. These scenes may act as breathers when they come right after the ones which are a little tough to digest, but as the film progresses, it does feel like speed breakers. However, Theal pulls up its socks and moves briskly in the final stretch, where it pulls up lots of surprises, many of which are a bit shocking and unpredictable.
This is one of Prabhu Deva’s most unique performances in his career, as he pulls off a role where he does not have to perform comedy, dance or even smile. The actor carries out a stiff body language and a straight face throughout the film, showcasing his anger and rage in many ways. As much as Prabhu Deva impresses in the film, Eeswari Rao does an equally good job too. The actress proves her mettle once again in a tough role that needs her to pull off different types of emotions, and it all comes together superbly in the climax. With these two being the two main characters in the film, the other actors don’t have much to do and try their best to do justice to their parts.
Vignesh Vasu’s cinematography is shabby and old-school, and some better visuals would have definitely pumped up Theal’s overall quality better. The film has some good songs by Sathya, who also empathizes with the emotional value for the background score.
It is pretty clear that Hari Kumar has done a neat job while translating the continuous intensity of Pieta into the Tamil commercial format for Theal. The film has a few good dialogues (even though Prabhu Deva does not speak much overall), and there is an emotional undercurrent that travels well and ends well. It is only in his artificiality and tacky making structure that the film gets bobbed down from its strengths, and is reduced to an engaging affair where it could have been even more. But at the end of the day, Theal is a fine watch for those looking for intense dramas that deal with emotions that would be relatable to one and all.

Theal movie review: Earnest performances from Prabhu Deva, Easwari Rao can't save this tedious fare
Despite a run time of less than two hours, the movie feels repetitive and stretched because of the lack of character development and gripping conflicts

Story: A cruel henchman of a dreaded loan shark leads a purposeless life. He threatens and harms others unapologetically as per the instruction of his boss. After living as an orphan for 30 years, a woman comes before him claiming to be his mother who abandoned him long ago owing to circumstances. Her entry brings a slew of changes in his life. Will he let go of the past and start living a new life?
Review: Hari Kumar's Theal is another example of a Korean movie adaptation gone wrong. The Tamil film is an official remake of Kim Ki-Duk's Pietà. The film begins with a youngster who hangs himself due to unknown reasons. We are then introduced to the popular Koyambedu market in Chennai and shark loans who depend on rampant business activities surrounding the area.
Durai (Prabhu Deva) is an inhuman goon who works for one such shark loan. He is quite unapologetic and cold-blooded when it comes to dealing with people who fail to return borrowed money from shark loans. In fact, there are many families which Durai has destroyed upon instructions from his boss.
He often uses Thilaka (Samyuktha Hegde), a bar dancer, for his physical needs, but the latter falls head over heels for him. Despite warning from her brother, she continues to wait till the day Durai understands her feelings for him. One day, a woman (Easwari Rao) comes before Durai and claims that she is his mother.
Though the latter initially refuses to believe her, he eventually trusts her when she narrates the circumstance which made her abandon him. Her unconditional love for him makes him even closer to her. But he loses his cool when his mother goes missing. He sets out to find her under the notion that one of his enemies would have harmed her. Will he be able to find her and lead a happy life with him? Will he confess his feelings for Thilaka?
It's been a while since a lead actor in Tamil cinema played a remorseless character from the word go. The film's first sequence features him harming a husband and wife for not repaying the amount they borrowed from his employer. The wife goes on to offer herself to him because of their inability to pay back the sum.
Prabhu Deva did justice to the cold-blooded role he essayed despite his character arc not convincing enough to please the viewers. A handful of scenes involving mother-son sentiment works partly because of its staging, but ends up becoming predictable fare because of uninspiring screenplay and lack of detailing in other characters.
Easwari Rao's performance is another positive aspect of the movie. She nailed the emotional scenes and moments where feelings for her son are depicted. The female lead essayed by Samyuktha Hegde and songs that feature her, including a duet song with Prabhu Deva, do not help the plot in any way and test the patience of viewers.
The characters of other artists, too, are underwritten - be it Shatru who played the loan shark, Yogi Babu who appeared as Samyuktha's brother or Arjai who attempted to build his own empire in the market - are all written only on surface level.
The mother-son conflict, too, is unengaging after a point as there isn't any interesting deviation after the protagonist starts realizing his mistakes. Despite a run time of less than two hours, the movie feels stretched because of the lack of character development. A twist in the third act is ineffective and doesn't serve any purpose.
The technical departments are okayish; the songs are unnecessary, background score does not impress and fight scenes lack punch.
Verdict: The performances from two lead actors do not help the film in any way because of its lame screenplay and unengaging twist.
Theal is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

This engaging and finely performed film, helmed by director Rajasaagar, thrives on a thoughtfully crafted narrative. While initially appearing as a conventional campus romance, 'Thaal' distinguishes itself by delving into psychological intricacies, skillfully explored in the screenplay by writer Dr. G Kishore. The film transcends typical love stories with a refreshing approach, leading to a climax that is both surprising and subtly nuanced.
The storyline unfolds as college students Pranav (Arun) and Lakshmi (Mareena Michael Kurisingal) stumble upon the names Vishwa and Mithra, sparking their curiosity. Seeking insights from psychology professor Karthik (Rahul Madhav), they are transported to the college campus of 23 years ago. Here, the romance between psychology students Mithran (Anson Paul) and Vishwasree Subramaniam (Aradhya Ann) takes center stage.
Once the central relationship is established, the narrative takes a serious turn, exploring psychoanalysis and adding depth to the plot. Aradhya Ann delivers a mature and sublime performance, skillfully navigating the complexities of her character's mental state, enhancing the impact of the climax. Anson Paul impresses in a substantial role, and Rahul Madhav provides solid support as a genuine performer.
Despite some cliched love sequences in the initial stages, the film takes a unique turn by addressing a psychological issue, setting it apart from other genre films. Director Rajasaagar captures the essence of college life with a natural setting, avoiding unnecessary and colorful campus celebrations. The film, starting as a conventional campus tale, ascends to a touching and delightful realm due to its well-crafted script.
The visuals by Sinu Sidharth and the music by Bijibal contribute to creating a perfect ambiance, enhancing the overall impact. 'Thaal' successfully compensates for its flaws with a striking and emotionally resonant climax, making it a soulful addition to the campus romance genre.

Asif Ali, Biju Menon's 'Thalavan' arrives on OTT two days prior to scheduled date. Know where
The acclaimed Jis Joy directorial 'Thalavan', which was touted for OTT premiere on September 12, has released two days earlier than the scheduled date. The movie starring Asif Ali and Biju Menon in lead roles is an entertaining investigative thriller. The story revolves around two police officers, Jayashankar (Biju Menon) and Karthik (Asif Ali), and how one becomes a suspect in a murder case. In addition to Biju Menon and Asif Ali, the film features actors such as Dileesh Pothan, Miya George, Anusree, Kottayam Nazeer, and more.
'Thalavan' is Jis Joy's latest work after the 2022 film 'Innale Vare'. The movie released on Sony Liv on September 10 and is already receiving rave reviews post its OTT release. The film follows familiar patterns of a typical investigative thriller, but scores with it making. Writers Anand Thevarkkat and Sarath Perumbavoor have also crafted the script skillfully. The climax sequence is tidy, though it feels like the antagonist lacks significant character development. Read full review here. 'Thalavan' is the latest addition to police-themed films that have been releasing in Mollywood over the past few months.

Theal Movie Review: Critics Rating: 3.0 stars, click to give your rating/review,A woman walks into the life of a debt collector, who works for a loan shark, claiming to be his moth
Theal: Directed by Harikumar, Hari Kumar. With Prabhu Deva, Samyuktha Hegde, Vishnu Unnikrishnan. A woman walks into the life of a debt collector, who works for a loan shark, claiming to be his mother. He tries to turn over a new leaf moved by her affection, but can he do so after having ruined the lives of so many people?
Director: Harikumar. Cast: Prabhudheva, Easwari Rao, Samyuktha Hegde, Yogi Babu. A few minutes into Theal, it already begins to feel like an unusual film. The first surprise is that the lead character Dorai isn't a hero but rather an anti-hero. When we first see him, he casually barges into houses of people who owe money and beat them to a pulp.
It is this range of tension that Harikumar creates that helps us invest our attention in Theal, but at the same time, it does not come without the commercial compromises which are a scare for a film in this region. There's also a sense that the film is a bit artificial towards the end, which sucks out the actual impact that it holds in hand.
