Weekly History Camp Author Discussions use a lively, conversational approach to learn more about an interesting historical topic from a noted history author. Past guests include David Blight , Tom Clavin , Charles Fishman , Allen Guelzo , Arthur Herman , Damien Lewis , Joyce Lee Malcolm , Thomas Ricks , Andrew Roberts , Stacy Schiff , and Amity Shlaes , among many others.

History Camp Author Discussions are free to all—no registration needed—and stream to our HistoryCamp.org/discussions page and to multiple social media platforms. After the broadcast, they live on forever in our archive at HistoryCamp.org/archive , each on a dedicated page with additional information about the author.

Topics cover all aspects of history. We do not include historical fiction and we do not cover modern politics. (For “modern,” we draw the line at the Nixon administration.) If a book includes modern history, we take our discussion up to that point and leave our guests to read more in the author’s book.

Many books discussed on History Camp Author Discussions are available for purchase through The Pursuit of History bookshop.

A project of the non-profit organization The Pursuit of History

History Camp Author Discussions are a project of the The Pursuit of History, the non-profit organization that engages adults in conversation about history and connects them with historic sites in their communities and across the country through innovative in-person and online programming.

History Camp was founded in 2014 as an annual in-person event. History Camp Author Discussions began in April 2020. With the re-opening of in-person events beginning with History Camp Boston 2022, we have had some of our guests on History Camp Discussions join us and present in-person. At History Camp Boston 2023, four Discussion guests joined us and presented at Suffolk University Law School, the venue for our annual event that is on the Freedom Trail in downtown Boston and directly across from the Old Granary Burying Ground.

We are a non-profit organization publishing World History Encyclopedia , the world's most-read history encyclopedia. Our mission is to engage people with cultural heritage and to improve history education worldwide. Every month, millions of students, teachers, history enthusiasts, and travelers use the website to learn about history.

Studying history helps us gain a more nuanced understanding of the world we live in today. Our knowledge and interpretation of history shape how we define ourselves as nations and as cultures, and it influences how we see and interact with other cultures. We help people across the globe gain a deeper, fundamental knowledge of our interconnected human past in order to create curious, open-minded, and tolerant societies in the future.

Non-Profit Organization

World History Encyclopedia is a non-profit organization registered in both the United Kingdom and Canada .

We help teachers, students, and schools by providing them with reliable, easy-to-read, and high-quality resources entirely for free. By creating an engaging and exciting encyclopedia, we have inspired millions to learn more about human civilization and our shared past.

We live in an age where xenophobia and nationalism are on the rise, both of which only serve to separate people of different nations and cultures through suspicion, fear, and even hate. We can help people understand other cultures and reduce their fears by encouraging them to better understand world history , each culture’s heritage, and how cultures relate to each other.

  • Wolfe at Culloden

By Hobilar August 2, 2024

There was no quarter given to the defeated Jacobites. Except for a few officers reserved for public punishment, the wounded were mercilessly slaughtered on the field of Culloden.  As Major James Wolfe, the future conqueror of Quebec, rode with the Duke of Cumberland across that blood stained field, they came across the wounded Fraser of […]

  • Battle of the Little Bighorn

By Phidippides July 23, 2024

The Battle of Little Bighorn took place on this date in 1876. In the Wikipedia article that describes the battle, possible reasons for Custer’s defeat are given (condensed from the original, earlier edition of entry): Unfortunately (for Custer and his troops), this aggressive action was deeply flawed as a military tactic. First, Custer did not […]

  • Is Robert E. Lee overrated as a military leader?

By Historywonk July 18, 2024

No one denies that Lee was courageous, resourceful, and daring, both as a junior officer in Mexico and commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.  And no one denies that his string of victories is impressive with the Seven Days, Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.  But one must also look at his opponents. Seven Days […]

What is the role of the historical anecdote in writing?

By Phidippides • July 12, 2024

Have you ever really thought about how the anecdote should be handled when writing papers?  These devices are often times found in academic writing and can make for some of the most memorable insights that authors try to convey. On one hand, it can be used to illustrate some larger trend that you are showing.  […]

  • The fall of Athens

By Hobilar July 9, 2024

In 407 B.C. and again in 405 B.C.. the Spartans in alliance with their old enemies, the Persians, destroyed two Athenian Fleets. Although Athens had suffered defeats before, notably in Sicily in 415 B.C., they had always managed to rally and beat back the Spartans. This time, however, Athens could not make up the losses. […]

Empress Maria Theresa’s new gloves

By Hobilar July 3, 2024

When the Austrian General Raddik descended on Berlin in 1757 he is said to have demanded not only a large sum of money, but also, two dozen gloves for Maria Theresa (1717-1780). However, when the gift arrived in Vienna, it was discovered that the Berliners had taken their revenge by providing only left-handed gloves.  This, […]

The legality of the Declaration of Independence

By Phidippides July 3, 2024

It is interesting that this is being discussed in modern times, but it is probably a great idea to talk about it.  Is the US Declaration of Independence illegal?  A portion from the article: For American lawyers, the answer is simple: “The English had used their own Declaration of Rights to depose James II and […]

The death of the Red Baron

By Notch July 2, 2024

Canadian Roy Brown is credited with the death of the Red Baron, but it is argued that due to the angle of the wound (lower right to upper left) that killed Richthofen that the bullet was fired from the ground by Australian AA gunners and not Brown. Another argument is that his 1917 head wound […]

Good sites to learn about random history?

Hi everyone,

Hope this is OK to post. I'm currently over 40 weeks pregnant and have had a bit of insomnia waiting for this baby to come. I find myself mindlessly scrolling through Reddit at night and would like to feel a little more productive if I'm going to be up.

Do you have any recommendations for good websites to learn about random history (aside from Wikipedia)? I'm looking for somewhat easy stuff to digest since it will be late at night. Things like overviews of major historical events, short biographies on famous folks throughout history, etc.

Thanks so much for your time and suggestions!
