Sustainable and Ethical Fashion Consumption: the role of Consumer Attitude and Behaviour
Global demand for improved corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the fashion industry has created many challenges and opportunities for companies wishing to integrate the principles of sustainability into their business strategies. Since businesses operate for a profit, investments towards sustainability can only return shareholder value if the consumers are rewarding it. There is, however, a vacuum in empirical knowledge regarding the role of consumer attitude and behaviour in the sustainable and ethical consumption of fashion. This qualitative and quantitative study contributes to the knowledge database using experimental research based on survey methods and statistical analyses. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Hamburg with 100 respondents made up of an equal number of HSBA and non-HSBA students. The questions were aimed at gaining insight into respondents’ attitudes towards ethical issues and resulting behaviour before, during and after the purchase of clothing. Results show that eco-labelling of clothing only influences the buying decisions of consumers who already possess a positive attitude towards sustainability. It was revealed that many consumers still harbour scepticism on the real motives of fashion companies towards sustainability. Price and quality are more important factors for purchase decisions than ethicality. Many Consumers have little information on where to buy eco-clothes. Many consumers today are aware of sustainability concepts, but the awareness still has little bearing on their purchase behaviour. The results are however limited by the number of respondents, ethnography and age groups. The outcome of this report would be invaluable for market planning and investment decisions towards sustainability projects in the fashion industry.

In response to the rapidly growing consumption of clothing, environmental sustainability concerns have increasingly been expressed. While designers and industry have worked on responses, little is known about how ordinary consumers understand sustainability with regarding to clothing. A study by Defra in 2008 revealed a low awareness of sustainability and proposed sustainable fashion goals for consumers. Research on consumer clothing purchase tends to be from a marketing perspective with the ultimate aim of increasing consumer sales. The decline of the environmental health is a subject which has grown sturdily in the past several decades and has extensive cost to pay for both human well-being and nature. The apparel industry has practiced significant development and achievement over the last few decades. This has directed to a powerful examination over economic, environmental, and social effects within the apparels industry. A concern has been aroused regarding environmental issues in apparel industry such as the use of hazardous chemicals and non-renewable resources, and the momentous issues with the generation of waste per year across the world. With the speedy transformation in the fashion trends and the overconsumption of clothes has had a significant environmental impact on society. Hence, there is a need to understand how consumers are disposing their unwanted clothes. Textile is massive untouched consumer goods with a heavy reuse and recycles potential. Luckily, Customers are more alarmed about environment and their fitness which is affected by ruined environment due to pollution. They are becoming aware of these issues and so they are changing their utilization pattern accordingly. Previous studies have measured an effect of fashion and style on consumers" apparels disposal behaviour, but those have mainly focused on the major causes of apparel wastage. But there is a lack of research which tests consumers" approach towards apparels and their disposal methods. The study conducted through an online survey of 152 respondents at Rajkot city, Gujarat with varying demographic characteristics to identify the awareness level, the eco-conscious consumer practices adopted by them, especially in a view to the purchase and disposal of apparel and how they currently manage their apparel waste including resell, reuse or recycle. It has been observed through this research that consumers have pro-environmental behaviour, and their awareness and willingness about the sustainability in clothing is very high irrespective to gender, age or incomes in Rajkot but still disposal methods are not that constructive. All 3Rs are not completely adopted for the disposal. Reduce and Reuse methods still implemented up to some extent but not recycling of the cloths.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of environmental concern, perceived value, personal norms, and willingness to pay on generation Z’s purchase intention for recycled clothing. Design/methodology/approach The data were collected from five Indian universities. A total of 497 usable responses were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis was used for examining the validity and reliability of the scales. Further, the structural equation modeling was used to assess the relationship among the constructs. Findings Findings suggested that willingness to pay, environmental concern, perceived value, and personal norms influence generation Z’s purchase intention for recycled clothing. Willingness to pay, environmental concern, and perceived value were major predictors of purchase intention for recycled clothing. Practical implications This study holds much importance to the marketers of recycled clothing as it provides useful insights for formulating the appropriate promotional strategies. The study also contributes to the consumer behavior literature by addressing the existing research gap. Originality/value Most of the studies existing in this area have focused on the manufacturing side only except few which explored the consumption side of recycled clothing. Hence, the current study is an attempt to fill this research gap.

Sustainability becomes an important issue especially for fast fashion as a short production concept but consumers are unwilling to adopt sustainable changes in their consumption choices, a phenomenon that is common to many fashion industries that of er sustainable products. Therefore, This study investigated motivational consumers in buying fashion (Brand Consciousness, Materialism, Social Comparison, Fashion Innovativeness, and Fashion Involvement) toward attitude consumers. In addition, this study aims to examine the relation among awareness consumers on attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control in the context of sustainability fast fashion. This research uses structural equation modeling analysis (SEM) in the SmartPLS and bootstrap programs.

The fast fashion market is becoming popular, escalating and aggravating the throwaway culture phenomenon. Thus, it is valuable to understand the factors that influence sustainable fashion consumption and the clothing disposal pattern among young consumers in developing countries like Malaysia. Data were obtained from the online survey of 324 young adults aged 18 to 35 and were analysed using the Partial Least Square using SmartPLS (v.3.3.3i). The findings indicate that personal norms, social norms and environmental awareness were the key influencing factors of sustainable fashion consumption. Fast fashion retailers today are recognising sustainability as an issue and many retailers are incorporating sustainability into their products and marketing strategies. Yet, sustainability in fashion is still seen as something new and consumers are hesitant to adopt sustainable fashion even though they have sufficient knowledge about sustainability in fashion. Thus, the purpose of this study is as follows: (1) to investigate the factors that are affecting millennial consumers to adopt or reject sustainable fashion consumption and how far social influence will shape millennial’s sustainable fashion consumption practices; and (2) to examine if gender still plays a part in millennial’s sustainable fashion perspective and behaviour in the gender-fluid postmodern society. A total of ten respondents (five male and five female) were recruited and participated in the in-depth interview. The data of the result indicate that millennials have a positive attitude towards sustainable fashion; however, due to personal inconvenience and price, many millennial consumers chose not to adopt sustainable fashion practices. The research data also shows that there might be a relationship that older millennial consumers focus more on their personal capability when it comes to sustainable fashion lifestyle while social pressure and norms seem to be more effective on younger millennials to influence their sustainable fashion consumption. However, due to the small size of samples, this study cannot support this claim. Lastly, gender does not affect millennial’s perspective and attitude towards sustainable fashion as this generation of consumer view sustainable fashion as positive implementation that retailers and consumers should pursue.

Sustainability in fast fashion is a pertinent issue as the fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries. Fashion retailers have started to integrate sustainability initiatives, but consumer preference is vital to making firms change their practices. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, worldwide lockdowns exposed the fragility of the consumer-driven fast-fashion business model. This thesis will examine how COVID-19 has and will continue to impact sustainability in the fashion industry. More specifically, this thesis will examine the implications of consumer sustainability preferences brought about by the pandemic. These implications accelerate the preexisting sustainability trends in the fashion industry by pushing companies to appeal to the consumer preferences brought about by COVID-19. This project provides insights for business managers in the fashion industry to thrive post-pandemic.
