Sometimes you’ll be asked to give a farewell speech for a colleague that is leaving. In this case, you’ll follow many of the same principles that we listed for a farewell speech that you’d give when you’re the one leaving.

Instead of talking about your time with the group as a whole, however, you’ll talk about the individual who is leaving.

Share some of their positive qualities and accomplishments, a few memories or uplifting experiences you had with the person, and how the person has impacted your career or the workplace as a whole.

Close by thanking them for their hard work and wishing them well as they move on to other endeavors.

This speech should be more about your colleagues than about you, so make sure you keep your speech to the point and focused on topics everyone can appreciate.

General memories that most people have in common or your gratitude toward different people or groups in the organization are both great points to include in your speech.

You should start your farewell speech by thanking everyone for being there. Chances are you’re giving your speech at an event of some kind, and even if it’s just a gathering in the conference room to eat cake, you need to thank everyone for taking the time to attend.

How to give a great goodbye speech.

Farewell speeches mark significant departures: getting a promotion which means leaving a long held job and a group of respected colleagues, graduating from a course of study, leaving the workforce to retire... 

To be meaningful they need to be more than a casual "see you later" and a mumbled "thanks for everything" as you dash for the door.  Or the opposite, a rambling collection of anecdotes that bore listeners silly.

In contrast, a planned farewell speech crystallizes the moment of leaving, giving it focus, form, and dignity. It provides an opportunity to publicly acknowledge people and events, as well as to graciously show your appreciation and gratitude for them.

Occasions for giving a farewell speech

Leaving a workplace.

A farewell speech is frequently expected when leaving a job to take another, particularly if people have got together at a farewell party to mark the occasion.

It is either given by the person leaving or, to the person leaving by a close colleague, often their manager or boss.

Other occasions for farewell speeches

Other occasions calling for a farewell address are graduations (leaving a school, a class...), retirements, (leaving the full time workforce), or perhaps when a long-time member of your club or neighborhood departs.

A funeral speech or eulogy is yet another form of a goodbye or farewell speech.

'Winging it' v being prepared in the workplace

If there's a possibility you may be called on for a farewell speech in your workplace think it through carefully. 

There is a fine line between formal and informal, prepared and unprepared (winging it) in front of a crowd. Publicly straying too far on the spontaneous and casual side of it may have a knock-on impact you have little control over.

Like for instance, being overlooked rather than being offered the opportunity to speak on behalf of your fellow colleagues and your company again. 

Consider. Plan. You will know if you're expected to give a farewell speech. 

Learn from either your own previous experience or what you've witnessed. Be it the good, the bad or the ugly!

Good communication skills, (which includes public speaking), will open more hearts, minds, and therefore doors, than any other skill you might have!

Hallmarks of gracious farewell speeches

So having established the need to do more than bumble through, here's what you are aiming for. 

These are the characteristics of a speech an audience: your co-workers, employers, a dear colleague, classmates, a good friend, fellow club members, family members...anybody, would be delighted to hear.

  • It is respectful and sincere. The speech expresses appropriate honest and genuine feelings about people, events and ideas.
  • It is positive. The speech acknowledges outcomes, projects and events positively, without undue exaggeration or puffery. It concludes wishing hope and good luck for what the future holds. (If being positive is difficult be very careful about publicly passing judgement or making comments that could cause embarrassment or something far worse.)  
  • It is brief. The speech is succinct and concise, minus padding or waffle. There are no prizes for rambling on and on. Three to five minutes is enough!

Content ideas for a leaver's going away speech

If it's you who is leaving and you're preparing a speech to mark the occasion, here is a list of the type of material expected, and appreciated, in a farewell speech.

  • A brief summary of involvement eg. how long you've been with the company, club...
  • What you have enjoyed, admired or appreciated about the work environment, job, neighborhood, club...
  • The admiration and appreciation you have for the people: their qualities or their professional skills
  • What you feel about leaving
  • Your gratitude and thanks for support, opportunities to learn, friendship...
  • Special memories: good humored anecdotes or a particularly memorable moment 
  • Your reasons for leaving eg. shifting to a new city
  • What, or where, you are going to
  • Hopes and best wishes for those remaining

Obviously you're not expected to cover all nine points in lavish detail. Pick what feels right to you. Apply the guidelines and, prepare your speech.

A sample farewell speech to colleagues

To show you how the content suggestions and "graciousness" guidelines work together I've written a sample speech. That's below. 

The speech is 496 words long. Depending how fast or slow you speak, that will take approximately three and half minutes to deliver. (You can find out more speech rate here) 

About this speech

The speech is entirely fictional. I've written it from the point of view of a person working for a company called Smith and Black.

Here he/she, (I've not defined gender.), led a team which was involved in community initiatives. He/she is leaving to do further study.

The speech will be given at a gathering in the company staff room.

"Good morning. Thank you for coming along. I am delighted to see you all here.

Do you realize we've been sharing each other's company for 2920 days? 

That's eight years of fun times, challenging times and everything in between.

And today I am officially leaving you!

In the past some of you have questioned my sanity. Now, standing here in the midst of you good people, I'm wondering about it too!

It's bittersweet to leave a workplace you've enjoyed. I might joke about the Monday morning blues, but that's all it is – a joke.

We've been involved in some outstanding projects together.

I'll always remember our “Feed a Friend” out-reach program and its extraordinary success. 

The “Red Balloon” initiative had lofty goals which we slaved to bring to fruition, and failed. The hard lessons learned there we deployed in our biggest success of all: the “No Child Left Behind” program. That was magical, inspirational work which will go on making the world a better place.

With so much to be grateful for: outstanding colleagues, an ethical humane company, and meaningful work, it seems perverse to leave.

However, I am!

As some of you already know, I'm going to take up an offer to further my understanding of the practical implementation of diversity policy. It's an amazing course, taught by some of my heroes in the field.

This is something I've wanted for several years and the right time to do it is now.

  • What you have sincerely enjoyed, admired or appreciated about the leaver's contribution to the workplace, club, neighborhood... eg. their role in XXX project, their organizational skills, the creative new ideas they brought to the role, the chocolate cake they made for special occasions...
  • A story or two, a special moment to illustrate the type of person they are: their positive qualities and personality traits eg. a wonderful team player
  • How their departure will impact on those left behind eg. a great loss
  • Good wishes for the future
  • Presentation of gift on behalf of company, if there is one to give.

Writing and delivering your speech

The easiest way to take your content ideas and turn them into a speech is to use an outline. Click the link for a free printable fill-in-the-blanks speech outline . The speech outline covers the main points you want to make in the order you want to make them. Once you've filled it out, test by saying it out loud.

  • Listen for the flow of information. Is it ordered? Does each idea link logically? Are the transitions clear?
  • Is there a beginning (introduction), body (middle) and conclusion?
  • Is the content, tone and language use right for the occasion and your intended audience?
  • Time the speech. Is it too long? Edit if necessary.
  • And say your speech to a trusted friend or colleague at least a few days before the event.  This is a safety precaution to ensure you haven't left out anything that should be in, or put in anything that shouldn't be there. If there are alterations to make, you have enough time to get them done, and practiced.

3 ways to deliver your prepared farewell speech

Choose what best suits you and the occasion.

1. Read your speech

If the situation is very emotional or  you  are very emotional this may be the safest way to get everything you want to say out.

Using your completed speech outline as a guide, write the whole speech out. Word for word.

When you print your text out be sure to use a large font so that it is easily read. Double space your lines and number your pages for the same reason.

Reading aloud well needs practice. Without it you may find yourself with an audience full of people working very hard to be tolerant!

2. Use cue cards

Make brief summary notes on numbered (cue) cards that will serve as memory prompts to guide you from one idea to the next. These are very good if you have practiced and know your speech. They let you interact with your audience more freely than reading word for word does. The result is a more spontaneous sounding speech. 3. Give your speech from memory

If you have time this could be the option to go for. The advantages are that you speak directly to your audience. Because you are not relying on notes you can use readily use gestures and make eye contact. Check here for tips and techniques on how to remember a speech.

The disadvantage could be the risk of forgetting what you wanted to say entirely through being overcome by the emotion of the occasion. However that is significantly lessened through practice.

P.S. Please, please don't use your farewell speech as an opportunity to vent any pent up frustrations you may have, regardless of how tempting it may be. Instead focus on what was undeniably positive and sincerely highlight it. Be the bigger person.

Matt Morgan: How to say goodbye with style and meaning

Although first impressions count, last goodbyes can grow in resonance as years pass. The new UK government is rightly focusing on recruitment and retention of doctors, but we’ll always have colleagues who retire or rotate. When people start a new job we have induction programmes to welcome them as new workers, giving them ID badges and parking spaces. But when valued staff leave after a lifetime of service, too often there’s a void.

This year in my own department we’ve had colleagues retire after 40 years of service, while others have moved on to new challenges after a decade spent working shoulder to shoulder with their team. Celebrating, recognising, and remembering people who leave should be a core part of fostering community in the NHS, rather than an afterthought. Over the years I’ve seen too many oversized “Sorry you’re leaving” cards hastily passed around for strangers to sign at 4 pm on a Friday. Instead, this year we took the time to plan send-offs that had more meaning—and not a fake gold watch in sight.

We arranged for valedictory talks to be given, where a career could be celebrated and brought to life using pictures, thoughts, and words from the very person leaving. Then, instead of loud discos with curly sandwiches and warm beer, the parties were smaller and more intimate. The guests included people from different departments who held a particular meaning for the person leaving. And the parties were held in people’s homes, surrounded by families who had helped carry them through their career.

The gifts brought along weren’t expensive, but they were priceless. Bottles of wine in metallic gift bags were replaced by framed photos of the good times; speeches were given, including jokes understood only by those in the room; and mentors from the distant past were beamed in virtually through video messages. There was honesty, too—important conversations between people who didn’t always see eye to eye, allowing mutual recognition of a career well worked.

Even with such thought and meaning, however, retirement can be a tough transition for individuals and departments. Some may not want any fuss at all. As the American college basketball player and coach Abe Lemons once said, “The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off.” Recognising this may help retirees as well as the health service. The NHS Emeritus scheme ( www.nhsemeritus.org ) is a new initiative aimed at re-engaging recently retired clinicians with NHS providers. As well as supporting focused clinical activities, the scheme can provide mentorship and education ideally suited to people with a lifetime of experience.

So, next time a colleague leaves, remember that you don’t just throw a grand party for the new neighbours who move in but also for the ones who move out. Don’t forget to visit them in their new home, because one day you’ll be neighbours once again.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Sunday posted a letter to social media announcing that he would no longer seek reelection.

The decision by the Democrat came after building pressure from lawmakers, donors, activists and voters within his own party who had concerns about his ability to beat Republican Donald Trump in November’s election. The letter ended weeks of speculation after the 81-year old’s troubling performance at the June 27 presidential debate. Below is the text of the letter that Biden sent on his personal stationery:

My Fellow Americans,

Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation.

Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most important climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.

I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

Biden embarks on a new project: Shaping his legacy

For more than three at-times excruciating weeks, President Joe Biden and his team were locked in a campaign to save his candidacy. With his prime-time address to the nation Wednesday night, a new effort is underway: to shape his legacy. 

A group of Biden’s closest advisers is already at work to plot out what that will look like. The discussion includes domestic priorities he could advance in coming budget negotiations with Congress or through executive action, diplomatic initiatives he could see through with a freer hand and accomplishing what he has described as the most elusive of the three goals he outlined in his 2020 campaign — unifying the country.

NBC News spoke to a half-dozen White House and campaign officials about what Biden is planning, and advisers said they recognize that the biggest factor shaping how he is viewed in history will be whether Vice President Kamala Harris is successful in her bid to succeed him. 

“Everything is being viewed through that lens,” a White House official said.

In the earliest stages of this new phase, Harris campaign and Biden administration officials describe a thus far seamless approach to advancing both of their goals at once. There has been no explicit directive to Biden aides to run major decisions by Harris’ team for approval — but they have been collaborating nonetheless to make sure to row in the same direction. 

A source close to Biden said he will also reprise another message he offered after he declined to run in 2016: While he will not be a candidate, he is not going to stop engaging in the public debate.

Wednesday’s speech will be just the first in a series of farewell messages Biden will have a chance to deliver, including next month at a Democratic National Convention being retooled to focus on Harris and her eventual running mate.

Harris faces a compressed running mate search

Harris is only on her fourth day as a 2024 Democratic presidential candidate. But she may need to compress her entire running mate selection process into two weeks to comply with an Aug. 7 deadline Democrats have set for themselves to finalize their ticket, Alex Seitz-Wald and Ben Kamisar report .  

That deadline could push Harris to vet, meet with, select and announce her running mate in the next 14 days — or potentially risk losing her spot on the ballot in Ohio.  

Yamiche Alcindor and Jonathan Allen report that Harris is winnowing her list quickly — in part because of the compressed timeline and in part because several potential candidates, including Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, have taken themselves out of the running. 

The contenders: In interviews with more than a half-dozen Democratic insiders, the names of a handful of hopefuls have emerged as leading contenders: Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.  

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are also in the mix, these people said.

All of them are white men, though one source said a name that has been floated is Cedric Richmond, a Black man who is a senior Biden adviser and former congressman from Louisiana. 

“That’s something that will take some speed-dating,” said Michael LaRosa, the former press secretary to first lady Jill Biden. “There’s a lot to consider. You have electoral calculus. You have personal chemistry. You have someone who really matches your ideology.”

Kelly: While Senate Democrats are heaping praise on Kelly as a potential running mate for Harris, Sahil Kapur and Frank Thorp V report that some are nervous about the idea of him leaving the Senate, fearing a Republican could win a special election in Arizona to finish his current term, which expires in 2028.

Beshear: He stands out on the list as a resident of a solidly red state. But as Matt Dixon and Katherine Doyle note , Beshear won re-election last year in a state Donald Trump won by more than 20 points in 2020. He also won by 22 points in the eastern Kentucky county that JD Vance referred to in his Republican National Convention speech, a county Trump claimed by 52 points in 2020. 

In a region where Democrats are still fighting for votes, Beshear is seen as someone with a bipartisan reputation and blue-collar bona fides who can serve as a counterbalance to Vance.

How Harris can use her VP search to define herself

If done right, a methodical yet efficient veepstakes could help reintroduce Harris to the country and allow voters — particularly those who start in the skeptical middle — a chance to take a measure of her. Many voters will look at whom she surrounds herself with and whom she wants to associate herself with as ways to see how she’d govern. She’s being handed a gift in some ways with this opportunity to name a running mate. And she needs to use this time to introduce herself on her own terms.

Harris’ challenge isn’t a new issue for sitting vice presidents. Even with months to prepare, vice presidents have always struggled with the burden of being famous without being known. Folks know her name, know her position and perhaps have a singular semi-uninformed hot take (positive or negative) on her — and that’s it. She has to fill in the blanks before the Trump campaign and the GOP fills them in for her. It’s a race to define her.

And that’s why the veepstakes shouldn’t be rushed. This is an opportunity for Americans to get a glimpse of the type of Democrats she wants to run the country. This isn’t just about picking a running mate. This is about setting a tone for the type of politics she intends to practice — how ideology and practicality will weigh against each other, which issues will display her pragmatism and which issues will prompt a fight until the bitter end. Harris can tease out all of these things through a strategic use of the veepstakes process. 

With the Olympics starting Friday, there will be a mini-lull in the public’s focus on politics for two weeks. It’s a perfect time for Harris to stage her own contest — a political pentathlon — for a running mate. She doesn’t need to go full “Apprentice,” à la Trump, but she also shouldn’t shy away from media coverage of various candidates.

She can interview candidates whom she may never intend to pick, but she might end up interviewing a future Cabinet secretary or chief of staff. And she can use the veepstakes to throw some bones to various constituencies.

He always knew that he would be delivering a speech like this. He just thought, or hoped, that it would be more than four years from now. Yet while it was not technically a farewell address, with six months still to go in office and more presidenting to do, it was the beginning of Joe Biden’s long goodbye.

Mr. Biden’s address to the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday night was all Joe, love him or hate him — the paeans to American exceptionalism, the evocations of family, the selective boasting about his record, the favorite lofty phrases about an “inflection point” and “saving our democracy,” and yes, the soft, raspy old man’s voice that no longer commands the room the way it once did.

You know, in recent weeks, it’s become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future all merited a second term. But nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. And that includes personal ambition. So I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. You know, there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life. There’s also a time and a place for new voices. Fresh voices. Yes, younger voices. I would like to thank our great vice president, Kamala Harris. She’s experienced. She’s tough. She’s capable. She’s been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country. Nowhere else on Earth could a kid with a stutter from modest beginnings in Scranton, Pa., and Claymont, Del., one day sit behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office as president of the United States. But here I am. I hope you have some idea how grateful I am to all of you. The great thing about America is here kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands. You just have to keep faith. Keep the faith, and remember who we are. We’re the United States of America. And there is simply nothing, nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together. So let’s act together. Preserve our democracy. God bless you all. And may God protect our troops. Thank you.

What there was not much of was introspection about how he had gotten to this moment of indignity. He may be focused on the soul of America, but he revealed little of his own. Indeed, if there has been much soul searching over these past days and weeks of personal and political trauma that led to this reluctant end of his storied half-century political career, the search has been called off. Or at least the results were not reported.

He said it was time to “pass the torch to a new generation,” but said nothing about his own age, health or capacity that led so many Democrats to desert him since the calamitous debate on June 27. He did not describe the journey from supreme confidence that he and he alone could beat former President Donald J. Trump to the conclusion that in fact he could not. He offered no elaboration on how he had finally decided to give up his bid for a second term , but at the same time, he held back any bitterness he may have felt .

Instead, it was an opportunity for a reset, to tell his story again on his own terms and recast the narrative as he starts to exit the stage. In his first extended public comments since dropping out, he tried to remind voters who had grown weary or wary of him why most of them had liked him in the first place and maybe, just maybe, to begin to shape his place in history.
