A massive amount of water flowing from one place to another is a river. Rivers are the greatest natural resources in Nepal. There are many rivers in Nepal. Some of the big rivers of Nepal are Mechi, Koshi, Bagmati, Narayani, Kaligandaki, Seti, Mahakali, Rapti, Seti, and Karnali. Actually they originate from high Himalayas. Rivers are very important for us.

Firstly, water from rivers is used for irrigation, secondly, for generation of hydroelectricity and for domestic purpose. Rivers are important also for scenic beauty. Many tourists love watching the flow of water and rivers are also used for rafting and even for transportation.

In spite of such advantages of rivers, people are polluting water resources by throwing wastage garbage, dead bodies, and waste materials. People have managed their drainage in rivers. Pollution of water in rivers has caused a great disadvantage for people themselves.

Our main challenge is that we are not being able to fully harness the water resources available in our country. So, we should take good advantage of resources available in our country. And for that protection of rivers is very much essential.

• Major Rivers Of Nepal

Nepal is a country in Southern Asia that is found bordering China and India. It is a landlocked country and has a population of 26.4 million people. The country is a former monarchical government, but now it is a federal democratic republic. Nepal has a total area of 147.181 square kilometers. The landlocked country experiences different climatic conditions, such as extreme winter and breezy summer in the north and calm winter and subtropical summer in the south. Nepal experiences landslides, thunderstorms, and severe flooding. It also has several mighty rivers arising in the Nepalese Himalayas among them is the Bheri which is the longest and fully within Nepal.

Ghaghara (Karnali)

The River Ghaghara, also known as the Karnali, is a perennial river which originates from the Tibetan Plateau before cutting across the Himalayas in Nepal and then joining the Sharda River in India. It is a trans-boundary river that has a 671 miles stretch. Aside from Nepal, River Ghaghara is also shared by India and China. The river’s basin hosts four National parks, wildlife reserve, and two buffer zones which serve as tourist destinations. The river also provides a means of cheap hydroelectricity power production in Nepal. However, with the construction of bridges and extreme flood lines have resulted in the destruction of homes of residents living in the area.

Kosi (Koshi)

The River Kosi, also known as the Koshi, drains from the Himalayas and the southern slopes in Nepal for a total stretch of 453 miles. The river is also shared with India and China. The River is also known as ‘Sorrow of Bihar’ because of the suffering it causes when it floods destroying the economy of the region. People also link the river to spiritual powers alluding that its forceful nature is death’s sister that limits population growth. The river also provides fishing grounds and is a source of employment for the young people who live in the region and do fishing. However, due to the different channels that the river has, districts around it risk being submerged should it flood.

The River Kamala originates from the Churia Range in Nepal and flows into and through India. It has a length of 204 miles. River Kamala supports irrigation scheme projects started by the locals who live around it and is also used for the cheap production of hydroelectricity power. However, the magnitude of its flooding causes a huge impact, therefore, exposing locals to landslides and destruction of agriculture and habitat.

The River Bheri originates from the Dolpo region in Nepal and has a length of 164 miles. It is fully in Nepal and is considered a major tributary of River Ghaghara. River Bheri has three main tributaries and provides tourists with opportunities for rafting. The Bautes people who live around River Bheri also depend on the river for fishing which is their source of livelihood. The River, however, poses a high risk due to its strong current and when it floods it destroys the bridges and buildings around it.

Environmental Threats and Territorial Disputes

Other rivers in Nepal include the Gandaki which has a 391-mile length, and is also shared by India and China. The River Bagmati has a 371-mile length and is also shared by India. The River Seti covers a 126-mile long stretch, and is fully in Nepal. Deforestation is a major problem because of the over-reliance on wood fuel and a lack of other fuel alternatives. Most of the water in the rivers in Nepal have been contaminated with industrial effluents, animal and human waste, and agricultural runoff

There have been contested sections of the boundary between Nepal and India, covering a distance of 400 square kilometers, including regarding the source of the Kalapani River. There has been a joint border commission working in the disputed area. All the rivers in Nepal are a cultural and economic backing of the Nepalese, and cover the centuries doing so, giving rise to early civilizations and prosperity throughout Nepalese history. The same rivers are now a source of livelihood to millions of people that depend on it for irrigation and domestic use.

  Rivers in Nepal

Moving mass of water which flows from high land to low land is called river. Rivers begin or rise to flow from mountains or lakes. They flow through mountains, rocks and plain lands. They finally fall in to the sea or some other river. There are a large number of rivers in Nepal. Most of them rise from Himalayas or high mountains. However, some come from the mountain tops. Most of the rivers in Nepal start from snow-capped mountains so they flow continuously. These rivers are permanent in flowing water.

A few names of such rivers are: Koshi, Tamor, Gandaki, Karnali, Arun, Trisuli, Rapti, Sunkoshi, Narayani, Seti etc. Koshi is the biggest, Gandaki is the deepest and Karnali is the longest of all these rivers in Nepal. We all are rich in water resource. We can make good income from these rivers. However, only a little part of water resource is in proper usage. It is unfortunate that most of the water flows down uselessly.

Rivers are very useful. They have many advantages. Some of their advantages are given as follows.  We can irrigate our fields from the water of rivers. People can use the water of rivers as drinking water. We can get fish from rivers. The rivers of Nepal are very effective to produce hydro-electricity. We can row boat and raft along the rivers. Rivers can create some problems also. Flooding is one of the most dangerous problems caused by river.

Nepal is known as the second richest country in water resource in the world. Brazil is the richest country in water resource. If hydroelectricity could be produced, Nepal would have been counted as a developed country of the world. The rivers in Nepal are of great importance because they can play a vital role for the development of the country. They can be used to generate electricity, supply drinking water and provide irrigation. These are the reasons why the rivers in Nepal are of great importance.

Nepal is a beautiful country. The presence of different natural resources has made Nepal even more beautiful. Our country's precious resources include green hills, green forests, the snowy Himalayas, and rivers. Nepal is considered to be the second richest country in terms of water resources after Brazil.

Rivers have special importance to Nepal because the geographical division of our country is based on rivers. The west and east borders of Nepal are the rivers Mahakali and Mechi, respectively. Rivers are taken as the basis of the border line to separate zones and districts of Nepal. Ten zones of our country are named after rivers. Nepal is naturally provided with a network of hundreds of rivers. Among the rivers, the Sapta Koshi is the largest. The other big rivers in our country are the Sapta Gandaki, the Karnali, and the Rapti. Some of the rivers like Bagmati, Narayani, Kali Gandaki, etc. are of religious importance. The deepest river in our country is the Narayani.

On the basis of the distribution of rivers, Nepal is divided into three regions. They are the Koshi region, the Gandaki region, and the Karnali region.

Besides, rivers are of great economic importance to our country. Rivers are the source of hydroelectricity. Since we have many large and fast-flowing rivers, we can produce sufficient electricity. According to the studies conducted on the rivers of Nepal, it is calculated that the rivers of Nepal can produce electricity, which can electrify the whole of Asia. But unfortunately, we are not able to produce enough electricity for our own use. Steps should be taken to produce electricity sufficient for our own country. The river is the source of irrigation. If the water from the river is used for irrigation purposes, we can produce more food and become self-sufficient in food supply.

To conclude, plans and policies need to be formulated to utilize our rivers in scientific ways and develop the country in all aspects. If we do so, our country will definitely come under the list of the developed countries in the world.

These are the natural gifts for Nepal. It is proved by the fact that Nepal is the second richest country in the world after Brazil in water resource. Most rivers in Nepal originate from the snow clad mountains. Among these rivers in Nepal Koshi, Gandaki, Narayani and Karnali are some of the biggest rivers which flow from the Himalayas all through the year. Koshi is considered as the largest and Karnali is considered as the longest rivers in Nepal. Similarly, there are other rivers such as Bagmati, Bheri, Rapti, Kamala, Seti, Marshyangdi, etc. And many zones of Nepal are named after these rivers.

Rivers are known as the white gold in Nepal. Rivers have been used to generate hydroelectricity. For example, Sunkoshi, Marshyangdi and Trishuli are some of the leading hydroelectricity projects in Nepal. Since Nepal is an agricultural country, the multipurpose river projects have eased the farmers in the terai and some hilly regions in irrigation and having multiple farming. If there is a country’s flag that stands out among all other countries it is the flag of Nepal . Our flag is very unique and cannot be compared to other countries’ flags due to its shape. It also has a hidden meaning behind it which represents the country’s peace-loving and friendly nature, bravery, and immortal history.

My country Nepal is situated between two countries, India and China. Although it is sandwiched between international powers, conflicts have not happened between any, and peace remains. Nepal is a country of various castes and cultures. In other words, it is like a beautiful garden of flowers with people of different ethnicities and backgrounds.

My country Nepal is not only unique for its flag but also its geographical terrain, the variety of castes and cultures you can find, and the rich history of it. It is the land of various great places and important figures that people know far and wide. The temperature here spans from cool to hot and is a heaven for residing in.

There are about 126 castes in Nepal each with its own rich history and culture which makes Nepal a rich place for culture. Some dating back to the millenniums. Not only that, our country is very rich in its geographical terrain. From the lowest point of just 70 Meters from sea level to the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8848.86 meters) , we have temperature scales that vary from place to place. It is divided into three regions, Terai, Hilly, and Himalayas each according to their altitude and geographical differences.

Himalayan regions have high and mighty Himalayas that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country. It is already a great pride to have come from such a country. The diverse flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes, lush and green jungles, historical and religious places in Nepal are enough to gather the attention of foreigners and locals too. People from all over the world pay thousands of dollars just to see our country’s snow-capped mountains, rivers, cliffs, waterfalls, other beautiful landscapes, the rich flora and fauna, and sites of great religious and historical importance. It just doesn’t end there.

Our country ranks in the top 5 for the richest in water resources. With just a small country with an area of 1,47,181 sq kilometers, it has the potential to fuel hydropower worth 2% of the entire world. It may look small in number but taking our country’s small area in context, it is a potential incomparable to all. The Terai region holds fertile land and smooth flowing waters that are excellent for farming and cultivating.

Nepal is also known as an agricultural country where 60% of the people here follow agriculture as their work. Our country also has huge historical importance. Gautama Buddha the founder and preacher of Buddhism which is practiced worldwide was also born in Nepal. Buddhism is known to preach peace and non-violence and to love everyone. King Janak is also an important figure who holds great importance to communities in Nepal.

Other personalities include Bhrikuti, Araniko, etc. Our country is also known for its bravery. Our country never has to celebrate Independence day as we were never under the rule of any other. We stood and fought against the Britans and other Mongol countries. Brave Gorkhalis were united after a long struggle and fought their way to preserve their country. The courage and bravery of Nepali people are also know world wide. Many brave Gorkhalis went to fight under countries in world wars and won various colors and medals. This brought our country so much respect that we even enjoy it for granted to date.

Although our country’s history, culture, terrains, and achievements make anyone feel proud, the power struggle for the politicians, previous kings, and presidents have made the country weak and fall in the developing country category. Our rich natural resources have not been utilized and we have fallen way behind. Corruption is widely prevalent in our country and the loans we have taken from other countries are in a large number. The amount of food and other materialistic consumption has made Nepal import more and export less.

Our country is poor but the people here are rich. This is because of the corruption and the illegal working/trading that has been done. The government has not made significant progress and the people aren’t responsible. Although I feel proud to be A Nepali, the condition of my country makes me feel bad. People should feel responsible and carry out their duties and not just complain about the government.

The government too should implement proper policies and rules and enforce them accordingly. Utilization of our natural resources should be done in an effective way and social evils such as discrimination according to castes and genders, other superstitions should be slowly removed. Centralized development should stop and we should control the people moving out to other countries with their skills that are wasted abroad. This way we can slowly develop our country.

It is because, from ancient times, people realized the fertility of the river valleys. Thus, they began to settle down there and cultivate the fertile valleys. Moreover, rivers originate from mountains which carry down rock, sand and soil from them.

Then they enter plains and water keeps moving slowly from the mountainsides. As a result, they deposit fertile soil. When the river overflows, this fertile soil deposits on the banks of rivers. Thus, bringing fresh fertile soil constantly to the fields.

Most importantly, rivers help in agriculture. In fact, a lot of farmers depend on rivers for agricultural purposes. Rivers have the ability to turn deserts into productive farms. Further, we can use them for constructing dams as well.

Further, rivers also are important highways. That is to say, they offer the cheapest method of transport. Before road and railways, rivers were essential means of transportation and communication.

In addition, rivers bring minerals down from hills and mountains. We construct damns across the river for generating hydel power and also preserve the wildlife. Further, they also come in use for encouraging tourism and developing fisheries.

As pollution is on the rise, it has become more important than ever to save rivers. We must take different measures to do so. First of all, we must use biodegradable cleaning products and not use chemical products for body washing.

Further, we must not waste water when we shower. After that, we must install the displacement device in the back of the toilet for consuming less water. It is also essential to turn the tap off while brushing or shaving.

Moreover, one must also switch off the lights and unplug devices when not in use. This way we save electricity which in turn saves water that goes into the production of electricity. Always remember to never throw trash in the river.

Indian passenger bus with 40 people aboard plunges into river in Nepal; 27 dead | WATCH

So far, 14 deaths have been confirmed while 16 people have been rescued. the bus was reportedly en route to kathmandu from pokhara when it met with the road mishap, according to police..

At least 27 people have been killed and several others have been rescued.

"Death toll rose to 27 in the bus accident," said Chief District Officer of Tanahun, Janardan Gautam.

“The bus bearing number plate UP FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river,” Raya confirmed. The bus was heading to Gorakhpur from Pokhara via Kathmandu and the mishap most likely occurred due to bad weather amid the ongoing monsoon session.

A team of 45 Armed Police Force personnel led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Madhav Paudel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Disaster Management Training School has already reached the accident site and is carrying out the rescue operation. An MI-17 helicopter of Nepal Army carrying a medical team has flown to the incident site in Tanahun district from the helipad in Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu: Communications department of Nepal Army.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal said it was coordinating with local authorities in rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said, "Regarding the Nepal incident. We are establishing contact to find out if any person from Uttar Pradesh was on the bus."

Last month, two passenger buses carrying 65 people, including seven Indians, were swept by a massive landslide on the Madan-Ashrit Highway in Central Nepal into the Trishuli River. The bodies of five Indians were recovered later. Despite extensive search operations, including the deployment of a 12-member team from India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), authorities have not yet located the two missing buses and several passengers swept away by the landslide

As of August 12, search teams have found 25 bodies in the Narayani riverbanks and the Triveni Dam area, which is located 103 km from the disaster site. Nearly 200 people have died in the past two months due to landslides and floods caused by incessant rain in various parts of Nepal, while 5,000 people have been displaced.

Nepal's rivers are generally fast-flowing due to the mountainous terrain. Heavy monsoon downpours in the past few days have swollen the waterways and made it even more difficult to see the wreckage.
