Essay on grandmother

Essay on Grandmother: ‘Have you ever wondered what the circumstances surrounding your family may have been in the absence of an elderly figure? How would your parents have asked for advice when making certain decisions? When your parents scolded you, who would have pampered you? We as children are closer to our grandparents, especially our grandmother than any member of our family. Grandmother teaches us how to love, respect, care, and become responsible in life. In her free time, she sits on her rocking chair on the balcony and murmurs songs. Everyone in the family respects her and reaches out to her for her guidance.’

‘This loving member of our family is getting old and she deserves the best care. Grandmother endured all the family’s sufferings and made sacrifices for everyone. They never discriminate against their grandchildren and have equal love for everyone, They are always there for us, guiding us through here decades of experience and teaching us the realities of life.’

We often get to hear that grandmothers are emotionally closer to their grandchildren than their parents. This is because we as children spend more time with them and they have a golden heart. Consider this example: our parents often say ‘no’ to things we like or want, but our grandmother always considers our interests and tries their best to keep us happy. They don’t want to see us sitting sad in a corner and feeling neglected.’

There is something strikingly comforting about the word grandmother for all of us; that caring and nurturing woman in our lives because of whom we had a wonderful childhood. Most children have the privilege of knowing their grandparents. While some kids are raised in joint families, some only see them during holidays. But in both cases, they are bound to have a special bond with their grandmothers. Expressing this bond in an essay on ‘My Grandmother’ is thus likely to be an easy and joyous experience for some kids, but some might need guidance. Essay on GrandMother in English

Every year I eagerly wait for summer vacations to start because that’s the time when I can go to Chamba, Dalhousie. It is a beautiful place blessed with lush greenery and big mountains, but that’s not the only reason for me to go there. This place is special because my grandmother resides theirs.

She is a great inspiration to me. She follows a healthy lifestyle. She wakes up early in the morning and does meditation on the lawn. When I ask her why she does it every day she replies that the melodious sounds of nature and fresh air help her to relax her mind, body and soul. She is religious too.

The NGO helps to educate poor people irrespective of their age and gender. When I sit with her she tells me many fascinating stories and songs. She always encourages me to become a good human being and under her guidance, I am always happy and do the right thing. I love my Grandmother very much as she is the best gift from God for me.

My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. As my paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young, I only remember a few memories of him. One thing I surely remember is he used to brush his teeth twice daily without fail. I adopted this habit and ever since I have been doing the same.

My maternal grandparents have been my true systems of support. I am lucky enough to have grown up around such inspirational people. My grandfather was a principal of a college, so he always emphasized the importance of education . He helped us with our homework when my parents were not available. I spent my vacations at their place as I enjoyed living with them.

Similarly, my grandparents always embraced me with open arms. They used to wait for every holiday for our arrival. My grandmother made delicious pickles and meals which we relished greatly. She taught me a few recipes too and tips and tricks that are very useful even today. I simply adore my grandparents for instilling good values in me and my parents and for giving us a safe space to grow up in.

'My Grandmother'

Authors Avatar

Elizabeth Jennings, 'My Grandmother'

This poem explores the relationship between the speaker and her grandmother. It focuses on the remorse and guilt she felt - and perhaps does still feel - about the way she behaved towards her on one occasion, and can be seen as an attempt to exorcise this.

The poem is divided into four parts: the first stanza describes her grandmother working in the shop; the second the incident which causes her guilt; the third stanza shows her in retirement. In the final stanza, after her grandmother has died, the speaker reflects on herself and her grandmother's life.

The first stanza sets the scene - the antique shop reflects the character and life of the grandmother. The words 'it kept her' suggest that it seems, to the speaker, her only reason for living; the grandmother's concern is with surface appearance ('polish was all') not with deep human feelings ('there was no need of love'). Her solitariness is suggested in the fact that it is only 'her own reflection' she sees reflected in the antiques; it is these she lives 'among', not people. The antiques themselves create an oppressive atmosphere - they are 'faded' and 'heavy' in this stanza, and in the final stanza the 'tall/ Sideboards and cupboards' in the 'long, narrow room' take on the air of coffins. Even the sounds of the words the speaker uses contribute - the sibilants in 'the bra ss / S alver s  and s ilver bowl s ' are unwelcoming to the reader, and perhaps betray her disapproving attitude to the shop.

This is a preview of the whole essay

But to the grandmother the antiques have great importance. They are 'needed', though never 'used' - they are a substitute for human company, a replacement for love. She takes pride in her possession of them; the speaker's 'wish not to be used/ Like antique objects' is a wish not to be accorded the same kind of attention the antiques receive - and though the grandmother can see her own reflection in the antiques, she is denied the chance to see it in her granddaughter (someone whom we might expect to reflect her). In fact, beneath the images of polish, silver and brass lies someone who can be 'hurt', who feels though never speaks about how she feels, and who comes to be 'frail'; the poem deals with the speaker's complex response to this realisation.

The grandmother's life is bound up with the antiques even after she no longer keeps the shop. They accompany her to the 'long, narrow room' in which she essentially waits to die. This third stanza is full of unattractive images - shadows, the smell of absence, things too long shut up - yet the speaker still has to acknowledge that, to her grandmother, they represent 'all her best things'. This imagery sums up the lfe of a person who has been defined by her antiques - 'the smell of absences' suggests the memories that the grandmother attaches to these objects, but it also hints at an unfulfilled existence, while 'the shadows.../ That can't be polished' suggest the grandmother's loss of her habitual control as she nears death (a state itself often associated with shadow), and are a disturbingly vague image.

In the poem's final image, 'the new dust falling through the air', Jennings economically suggests the grandmother's joining of the antiques she devoted her life to. But this image simultaneously reminds us of her absence from the room she once haunted - there is new dust there where once there would only have been polish. The speaker recalls, in this final stanza, her feelings about the death - not grief but guilt. The poem as a whole is characterized by the honesty of its attempt to look back, as an adult, on a relationship that, as a child, was bound up with feelings of fear and guilt. There is no attempt to make excuses on either side, or to sentimentalize the grandmother now that she is dead; only in the poignancy of some of the images and in the speaker's need to return to events of long ago can we perhaps detect the lasting impression this woman has made on her, in spite of herself.

MY GRANDMOTHER by Elizabeth Jennings

I think that the poem "My Grandmother" is about an old women who has an awkward relationship with her grandchild. I believe that they would have had a better relationship if the women didn’t spend her whole life devoted to this one antique shop. I think this kept her from everything that was on the outside of the walls of the antique shop.

This is why maybe we get the feeling that the old women doesn’t have any friends and maybe that is why she has never tried to develop the relationship further with the grandchild.

I believe that the women has not ever felt warmth or has never kept on to the memories she once had before because in the poem it says;

"....the faded silks and the heavy furniture "

I think that this gives us the impression that everything she once had has gone and faded away with the furniture. In stanza two I think that the child may be feels guilty about never doing anything with the women. She recollects one event where she refused to go out with her grandmother causing the adult much distress and embarrassment. I think that she was afraid of her grandmother, perhaps of her coldness. Although you can see this in the stanza I still believe that the child was right to refuse because I think that the women is treating the girl like she was an antique;

"It was perhaps I think a wish not to be used

like antique objects ...."

In stanza three I think that you can see all the memories actually being revealed to the grandchild;

"All her best things in one tong narrow room"

It gives us the sense that after she had passed away now the guilt is just kicking in and the old women’s life has just began to open.

In the very last stanza I think that the very last chapter in the old women’s life is beginning to come to an end. Nothing is left in memory of her:

"..and no finger marks were there"

I think that now her life is over and that her family have been excluded, their lives have had a fundamental change and new dust had just began to settle over the rather cold possessions she seemd to value over her children and grandchildren.

Becoming Fluent in Spanish Was a Reclamation of My Identity

my grandma essay in english

"No sabo" is an incorrect way of saying "I don't know" in Spanish. It's also become an increasingly popular term that's used to describe Latine folks who aren't fluent in Spanish. And while the term might be a humorous play on the trickiness of conjugating irregular verbs like "saber," the shame that often accompanies not being able to speak the language of your parents is anything but a joke. I should know. For many years, I was a "no sabo" kid. And I hated it.

As a second-generation Nuyorican, I grew up surrounded by Spanish. My mother worked a lot, and that meant my sister and I spent the majority of our time with our grandmother. She'd speak to us in fluent Spanish, but we developed the habit of answering back in English. It was partially because we didn't know the proper conjugations of the words, but also because we were discouraged from trying by the way our elders responded to our attempts.

You see, very early on, we learned that if we made mistakes in our pronunciation or in our conjugation, we were made fun of. For an adult, a little cajoling might not seem like a big deal; but as a child, it filled me with so much shame and embarrassment that I simply refused to try to speak Spanish.

My father actually went through a similar experience, not with my grandparents, but with our relatives in Puerto Rico. He grew up speaking Spanish as a kid, but my father never developed the fluency he would have liked. For many of us second- and third-generation Latines, this is an uncomfortable reality. We might feel a strong connection to our ancestral cultures and homelands, but lack the ability to truly embrace our identities fully. This is especially true of Puerto Ricans.

The French King Charlamagne famously said, "To have a second language is to possess a second soul." However, not knowing Spanish as a kid felt like I was cut off from a piece of my soul. I'd listen with envy as my Dominican and Ecuadorian friends seamlessly switched back and forth between English and Spanish, and I'd feel like an impostor. I'd listen to reggaetón and salsa and feel ashamed that other Caribbeans seemed to understand my own cultural touchstones better than I did.

At some point, I started wondering: when did it become a thing that Puerto Ricans born in New York couldn't speak Spanish? At what point did we begin to raise our children to speak English as their first and only language? As with most aspects of the Puerto Rican identity, the answer is wrapped up in a history of colonization and immigration.

While Boricuas had been coming to the states in small numbers for decades prior, it wasn't until after 1945 that a large wave of Puerto Ricans migrated to the US to escape the island's agricultural crisis . When they arrived, they were met with xenophobia and the pressure to assimilate to American culture. And part of that assimilation meant giving up their language. The first wave of Latines to migrate to the states was mostly made up of Puerto Ricans and Mexicans who discovered that speaking Spanish in public painted a target on their backs, marking them as "other" and making it easy for them to be discriminated against. The trauma from these experiences was then passed down to their children, who were forbidden from speaking their cultural language or taught to prioritize English to avoid being ostracized.

We've even seen a resurgence in this kind of discrimination during the Trump years. In light of these incidents, speaking Spanish is akin to an act of resistance against oppression. For me, however, reclaiming my native language was less about fighting against oppression and more about becoming whole.

Ever since I was a kid, both my parents cultivated within me a love and appreciation for our island. Unlike other Nuyoricans I knew, I made pilgrimages back to the island every summer. But my lack of Spanish haunted me and kept me from experiencing the island the way I truly wanted to. My father and I would drive around searching for local spots, asking for directions only to be called "los Americanos" by locals. People would start conversations with me in Spanish and then, half-way through, switch to English for "my benefit." All these instances stayed with me for years, only exacerbating the shame I felt. But I was determined.

I kept trying to speak my language, forcing my way through conversations. My jobs helped, always surrounding me with Latines who seemed eager to help me learn. But I also went back to school and took up a second major in Spanish. When the opportunity came to take an intensive course and live in Spain for a month, I jumped at it. And then finally, the big step: I moved to Puerto Rico. For three years, I lived there, engaging with the locals, living like a local, and only speaking to folks in Spanish. My accent changed. My vocab improved. Finally, I could speak with confidence. And no, I didn't know every word. Yes, there were still gaps in my knowledge. But the more I spoke it, the more those gaps filled in and became less. The more I felt whole.

I realized, too, that I didn't always have the right words in English, so why did I force myself to achieve perfection in Spanish? I gave myself grace to fail, but never to quit. And slowly over the years, I finally reclaimed a piece of my identity that had been taken from me by societal barriers beyond my control. So, to all the "no sabo" kids out there, just know, there's still hope.

My wife isn't 'just' a stepmom to my son. He sees her as his other mom.

  • My wife has been in my son's life since he was 6 years old.
  • She has taken on a parental role, stepping in whenever I need extra help.
  • Even though she's his stepmom, my son considers her his other mom.

Insider Today

After Vice President Kamala Harris announced she was running for president, one criticism lobbed against her was that she is not a parent because she has never given birth to children. But she is the stepmother to her husband Doug Emhoff's two children.

Like Harris, my wife is a stepmother to my son.

I am no longer in a relationship with his father and have been in a new relationship for four years. My wife came into my son's life when he was 6 years old and quickly stepped into a parental role. It was a role she enthusiastically took on.

Although she didn't give birth to my son, my wife is absolutely his second mother.

My son and wife's relationship started friendly

My wife didn't immediately take an authoritative role or force him to treat her like a parent. At first, she was more like a grown-up friend — someone he knew he needed to respect, but someone who would take him on drives to get ice cream or let him pretend to drive her car while I was inside the grocery store.

Related stories

I was worried about parenting with another person all the time. As the primary parent, I wasn't used to dividing parenting duties . My wife was aware of that and always deferred to me as the primary parent.

But the bond between my son and my wife was instant. He had never met someone I was dating before, but he liked her immediately.

My wife has taken on more responsibility as a stepmom

Over the last four years, she's taken on more parental responsibility but never tried to act like she was more of a parent than myself or my son's father. She is a bonus mom, someone there to kiss him goodnight , help him with his homework, and love him unconditionally.

During the pandemic, my wife volunteered to take the lead in helping my son with virtual school so I could focus on work. She created a schedule for him, made him lunch, and ensured he kept up with assignments. When the playgrounds opened, she would take him to play, armed with a backpack full of whatever was needed.

I have gone on several overnight trips , leaving the two of them alone together. My son doesn't even call or text me when I'm gone because he's having so much fun hanging out with my wife. I never have to worry about him; I know my wife will make sure he takes a bath and goes to bed on time.

There are days when I will ask her to tag in and do the bedtime routine because I'm working or want a break, and she does it without question. My son knows that if he needs something, he doesn't have to come to me all the time.

Seeing my wife willingly step into a parental role with my son has strengthened our relationship. I knew I loved her almost immediately after we met, but seeing how my son responded to her made me more secure in my decision.

Sometimes, she still refers to him as mine, and I always remind her that she's his mom, too. We do everything as a team: school meetings, performances, birthday parties . Everyone knows us as his two moms, and there's no one else I could imagine doing this with.

My son now sees my wife as the missing piece to our family puzzle. He proudly claims her as his other mom.

"You're my mom too," my son will say when my wife calls herself his stepmom. He made that decision. My wife never wanted to force a close relationship on him, but he pushed for it.

Media has warped the perception of stepmoms

Popular media depictions of stepmoms are largely negative. The common trope is that they're evil.

For example, you have characters like Meredith Blake in the Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap," the Baroness von Schraeder in " The Sound of Music ," and, of course, the prototype: Cinderella's Evil Stepmother.

These women are always seen as temptresses who come in and seduce the father into marrying them before revealing they intend to get rid of his daughter so that she will be the only woman in his life.

Maybe there are stepmoms out there who fit this description, but by and large, stepmoms are there to be whoever their step kids want them to be.

I know that's exactly the role my wife plays, and my son and I are all the more lucky for it.

“It was a great script and I could tell they were incredible directors, but my agents were like, ‘We will not let you do this movie. You are ruining your career. You will never work again,’” Gershon said, adding that her agents said they could no longer represent her if she took the part.

Watch Gershon’s full appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” in the video below.

When I Get Anxious, These Videos Help Calm My Mind

Tunnel through time with vintage B-roll.

A photo illustration of screenshots from vintage B-roll.

By Jonathan D. Fitzgerald

It was a grainy video, autoplaying in my Facebook feed, that first grabbed my attention. It seemed vaguely familiar — like a home movie from my childhood in suburban Boston but without the main characters, leaving only a warm, generic 1980s ambience. In the clip, kids in wide-collared shirts amble around a school cafeteria with burgers, tater tots and little square boxes of chocolate milk served by lunch ladies in those big buglike eyeglasses my grandmother used to wear. The video ended after about two minutes. Next, I watched a street glide by from the window of a moving vehicle: Kenmore Square, Boston, January 1977. The camera panned across storefronts — Strawberries, Paperback Booksmith, College Donuts — but I didn’t recognize anything until it zoomed out and the famous Citgo sign was revealed, perched atop the building where it still sits today.

Discovering these videos felt like time-traveling back to some precise moment when nothing of note happened. They are just short, contextless clips of old B-roll — the background film cut into broadcasts to break up the main footage — culled from the collections of WGBH, a 69-year-old Boston public-television station. In 2018, James Auclair, a station employee, began regularly posting the videos to social media. They infiltrated my own Facebook algorithm in the fall of 2023, which, it turns out, was just when I needed them. That August, I eagerly applied for a dream-job faculty position at a university, and I knew I was in for months of consistent, nagging anxiety about my professional future. When I came across the footage Auclair was posting under the handle GBH Archives (they dropped the “W” a few years ago), I was hooked: Here, finally, was a reprieve from the swirl of negative thoughts in my head.

I’ve devoured, by now, countless hours of B-roll. I’ve watched shoppers peruse CDs at the long-shuttered Tower Records on Newbury Street in the ’90s, transporting me back to Saturdays in high school when my friends and I browsed the rap and hip-hop racks for hours. Cars as big as boats — station wagons, sedans and vans like my parents drove — roll over the Tobin Bridge in 1979 ; drivers reach out their arms to pass cash and coins to toll attendants. I’ve watched ice skaters gliding over the frozen Charles River in the late ’70s and hairsprayed teenagers in leather and oversize sweaters smoking cigarettes outside their high school in the ’80s.

I’m not the only one hooked on these B-roll clips: YouTube is full of “retro B-roll” material, and GBH Archives alone has more than 200,000 combined followers on Facebook, X and Instagram. For some viewers, the appeal is pure nostalgia — many comment wistfully on the absence of cellphones or the predominance of suits and ties and dresses. Others note changes in the ever-evolving cityscape. Every so often, someone recognizes their younger self in a video.

Where the format of television news can crowd out thought, these videos create space for it.

What I love most is that the videos contain no narrative; they feel like ambient music — hypnotic, meditative. Rather than tell you what to think or fear, they just show you things. There’s a funny intellectual twist here: Television is an entertainment medium, and the primary purpose of these B-roll clips was to keep viewers visually engaged so they wouldn’t get bored watching a single shot of a newscaster talking. Watching this remediated B-roll subverts that purpose. There are no quick shots and snappy edits, no breaking news alerts or sensational chyrons, just slow and boring slices of life. Where the format of television news can crowd out thought, these videos create space for it.
