Start with an outline sentence to give an overview of the job and the business of the employer.

Head every role with an intro line to build context for readers, by outlining the company and role function.

List role responsibilities in concise bullet points to show how your technical skills are used to solve business problems.

Finish each role by listing some achievements that have had a positive effect on your employer

Writing a CV in UK format

The above examples should give you a good steer on how to create your own CV in UK format .

Here are a few final tips to help…

Think before including a photo of yourself – UK employers don’t need them to make hiring decisions, but they can add some personality to the document – especially if you work in a creative industry.

Keep it simple – UK recruiters tend to be very busy, so make your CV easy to read by keeping the font and layout simple. And keep the CV to around 2 pages in length , unlike an American-style resume which is often only one page long.

Do your research – Find out what skills and experience UK recruiters are looking for, so you can tailor your CV accordingly.

Good luck with your job search!

UK CV Tips and rules:

CV, not Resume: The term ‘CV’ is most common in the United Kingdom. The terms ‘resume’ and ‘curriculum vitae’ are rarely used.

Language: Be sure to write your CV in proper British English - for example, write ‘labour’ rather than ‘labor’ and ‘optimise’ rather than ‘optimize’.

Length: Your UK CV should not exceed two pages - “no longer than two sides of A4”, according to Rachel Swain at Prospects.ac.uk.

Resume template: Browse through our gallery of UK resume templates .

UK CV Format, Order and Layout:

Photo: A photo is not expected on your UK CV. While common in the rest of Europe, it is rare to see a picture on a CV in the United Kingdom. In certain roles, such as some sales positions or a creative job where visual presentation is key, a picture may be acceptable, but be sure to research the company first.

Personal Information: The only personal information required for a UK CV is your contact information - your name, home address, mobile phone number and email address (which should be some variation of your name: [email protected] or something similar). No other personal information should be included.

Personal Statement: Your CV should begin with a brief description, no more than five lines of text, that describes who you are, what you can do, and what you bring to the position you are applying to. Your personal statement should be tailored to the job description - focus on the skills and experience that make you suited for this particular job. Personal statements are not mandatory, but they are a great way to grab an employer’s attention. According to Michael Cheary at reed.co.uk , “a well written personal statement can mean the difference between standing out from the crowd and your application being rejected.”

Work experience: Display your previous jobs in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent. Use this space to showcase your achievements in each position - important milestones and quantifiable data are more impressive than daily duties. Use proactive action words to make your experience sound interesting and dynamic.

Education: Education should also be listed from most recent to least recent. Include all relevant certifications, including institution names and dates. Your education section should come after your work experience, unless you graduated very recently.

Other sections for your UK CV:

Skills: It is common to include a simple list of skills kept separate from your work history. This provides a quick, at-a-glance look at what you excel at, without delving into your experience too much.

Volunteer experience: Volunteering experience should be noted on your CV. If you prefer, you can include volunteer experience in your Work History section, but remember to specify when a role is a volunteer position.

Languages: Feel free to note any languages you are fluent in. This is particularly important when the job calls for multiple languages.

References: It is not necessary to include references in your CV. Instead, follow up with references to an employer separately when asked.

How do I Write a UK CV in 2024?

To write a UK CV in 2024 follow these steps:

  • First, select the right UK CV format based on your experience level. A reverse chronological CV format is good for experienced professionals, and a functional UK CV format is perfect for most entry level professionals.
  • Second, right the perfect CV header.
  • Third, write your UK CV summary or objective.
  • Fourth, describe your work experience on your CV.
  • Lastly, list any skills or achievements you’ve in a CV skills or an accomplishments section.

What is a UK CV Format?

The UK CV format requires your CV to be:

  • A maximum of two pages long.
  • In an A4 format.
  • Either be a reverse chronological or a functional CV.

How do I Write a Good UK CV?

To write a good UK CV ensure that you start with the right CV format and then customize the CV based on the job you are applying for. Pick up keywords and skills that are mentioned in the job description and modify your UK CV to show relevant skills and experience.

What Font Should a CV be in the UK?

The following fonts are preferred for a UK CV - Roboto, Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman. To give your UK CV a modern look you can select a Sans serif font e.g. Roboto, and for traditional looking CVs you can go for a Serif type font e.g. Times New Roman.

2024 UK CV Trends

In 2024, UK CV trends emphasize adaptability and precision to align with job market demands.

  • Functional CVs are increasingly popular, particularly for showcasing skills over employment history, which is ideal for career changers or those with gaps in their work history.
  • Combination CVs blend skills and experience, favored for their ability to highlight how past roles prepare candidates for future positions.
  • Brevity and Structure: A two-page limit ensures CVs are concise and scannable, making key qualifications quickly visible to recruiters.
  • Personal Profiles: Strong introductory statements or profiles are crucial, offering a tailored summary of skills and experiences relevant to the job.
  • Simple Design: Clear, well-organized CV layouts help ensure information is easy to read and professionally presented.

How Many Pages a UK CV Should Be?

Your CV should be one page if you are either an entry-level or a mid-career professional with less than 15 years of experience. For those who have more than 15 years of experience, a CV can be more than one page.

What Font Size Should my CV be in the UK?

A font size between 10 to 12 is considered easy to read. So make sure that your UK CV’s font size isn’t less than 10, but not greater than 12 either.

Conclusion:

Though CVs in English-speaking countries are very similar, each country has its own nuances that must be observed for best results. When writing a UK CV, pay attention to the specific requirements of each employer and if possible, have someone you trust read over your CV before submitting your application.

Temporary Seasonal Worker Visa for UK

seasonal worker visa

IN THIS SECTION

The Seasonal Worker visa offers overseas nationals a fast-tracked route to work in the UK in certain temporary jobs. However, strict rules apply on the kind of work that be done under this route, and it is only available to employers that have been approved by the Home Office.

In this guide, we explain the key features of the seasonal worker visa, including the requirements that workers and employers have to meet to be eligible to use the route.

What is the Seasonal Worker visa?

The Seasonal Worker visa is the permission needed from the UK’s Home Office for an overseas national to come to the UK to undertake seasonal work within either the horticulture or poultry production sectors for an approved scheme operator. The Seasonal Worker visa is one a number of temporary work visas available to foreign workers to come to the UK.

The current Seasonal Worker visa route replaced the previous Temporary Worker – Seasonal Worker visa (T5) under the UK’s Immigration Rules, where ‘Appendix Temporary Work – Seasonal Worker’ of the Rules sets out the different requirements for this route.

What are the different types of Seasonal Worker visa?

There are two different types of Seasonal Worker visa in the UK: one for working within the UK’s horticulture sector and one for working within the UK’s poultry production sector.

Seasonal Worker visa: horticulture sector

The Seasonal Worker visa in the UK’s horticulture sector is for overseas nationals aged 18+ to come to the UK for up to 6 months to work, for example, picking flowers or fruit and vegetables. There is no set timeframe within which migrants can come to work for their UK sponsors, where individuals can apply and travel to come to the UK any time of the year.

The type of work that can be undertaken in the horticulture sector includes work around:

  • protected vegetables grown in glasshouse systems
  • field vegetables grown outdoors, including vegetables, herbs, leafy salads and potatoes
  • soft fruit grown both outdoors or under cover, including strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, and all ribes and rubus species
  • top fruit or orchard fruit, such as apples, plums, cherries or apricots
  • vine and bines, such as grapes and hops
  • different types of mushroom species, typically grown indoors
  • bulbs and cut flowers, such as daffodils, grown both indoors and outdoors
  • seasonal bedding and pot plants, such as pansies, violas, geraniums and poinsettias
  • hardy nursery stock, like Christmas trees, shrubs, roses, ornamental trees and perennials
  • other types of trees and forest nurseries.

Seasonal Worker visa: poultry production sector

The Seasonal Worker visa in the UK’s poultry production sector is for overseas nationals aged 18+ to work in the UK as a poultry seasonal worker, but only between 2 October to 31 December inclusive. These dates represent the busy and peak periods in the poultry production sector, during and over Christmas, where those looking to come to the UK as poultry seasonal workers would need to make their application by 15 November each year.

The type of work that can be undertaken in the poultry production sector includes:

  • Butcher (occupation code 5431)
  • Bird/game dresser (occupation code 5433)
  • Killer and plucker (occupation code 5433)
  • Plucker (occupation code 5433)
  • Poulterer (occupation code 5433)
  • Poultry processor (occupation code 5433)
  • Poultry sticker (occupation code 5433)
  • Trusser (occupation code 5433)
  • Food operative (occupation code 8111)
  • Poultry catcher/handler (occupation code 9111)
  • Poultry vaccinator (occupation code 9119)
  • Poultry meat packer (occupation code 9134)

Seasonal Worker visa requirements

To obtain a Seasonal Worker visa, the applicant must be aged 18 or over and will need to have been assigned a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) by an approved scheme operator. The CoS must confirm certain information, including the applicant’s personal information, that they are being sponsored as a Seasonal Worker, as well as details of their job role, such as its location, start and end dates, weekly hours and salary.

In relation to the salary for a Seasonal Worker visa, the CoS must confirm:

  • the applicant will be working in an eligible role in the horticulture or poultry production sectors, either based on the type of produce farmed or an applicable occupation code
  • the applicant will be paid at least £10.42 for each hour worked if working in the horticulture sector, or in the poultry production sector as either a food operative, poultry catcher/handler, poultry vaccinator or poultry meat packer
  • they will receive at least 32 hours paid employment each week if working in the horticulture sector, or in the poultry production sector as either a food operative, poultry catcher/handler, poultry vaccinator or poultry meat packer
  • any workers sponsored as either a butcher or bird/game dresser in the poultry production sector will be paid at least £10.75 for each hour worked and £26,200 per year.

The sponsor must ensure that the sponsored job role pays at least the minimum wage and follows the UK’s rules around maximum weekly working hours. Additionally, the CoS must confirm that the role meets the relevant Agricultural Wages Order rate, where applicable. The rules around sponsoring Seasonal Workers are strict, where any failure to comply with the rules and regulations, and confirming this on the COS, will invalidate an application.

The applicant must also have enough money to support themselves on arrival in the UK. To meet the financial requirement, the applicant must be able to show funds of at least £1,270, where this level of funds must have been held in their bank account for at least 28 days in a row, with day 28 falling within 31 days of applying for a Seasonal Worker visa. Additionally, these funds must be held in accordance with the requirements under Appendix Finance.

It is possible for the applicant’s sponsor to agree to financially support the applicant on their arrival in the UK, although the applicant’s CoS will need to confirm that this is the case by completing the ‘sponsor certifies maintenance’ section under ‘Additional data’.

Seasonal Worker visa sponsorship requirements

To sponsor a Seasonal Worker visa, an employer must be an A-rated approved scheme operator within either the UK’s horticultural or poultry production sector with:

  • an endorsement from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to be an approved scheme operator on the Seasonal Worker route, and
  • a license from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA).

Individual employers and organisations in the UK are not eligible for a sponsor licence on the Seasonal Worker route, even if they are licensed as a sponsor on other work routes, where an approved scheme operator must be an overarching body.

The Seasonal Worker route is also subject to an annual quota, where 45,000 visas have been allocated to the horticulture sector for 2023, together with 2,000 reserved for the poultry production sector. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) are responsible for setting this quota and allocating this quota to approved scheme operators, where UKVI is the division of the Home Office in charge of issuing both sponsor licences and visas in the UK.

There are already overarching bodies (scheme operators) approved for a sponsor licence on the Seasonal Worker route. No further scheme operators will be issued with a licence without prior approval to be a scheme operator. UKVI reserves the right to refuse a licence application, even where a DEFRA endorsement and GLAA licence has been secured.

How to apply for a Seasonal Worker visa

To apply for a Seasonal Worker visa, an application must be made online to UKVI from outside the UK. The cost to apply for a Seasonal Worker visa is £298, although there is no immigration health surcharge to access the UK’s NHS, where this charge is only applicable when applying for a visa from outside the UK for more than 6 months. An application cannot be made from inside the UK, as it is not possible to switch into this route.

As part of the visa application, the applicant must prove their identity and provide any documents in support. They may be eligible to use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app . If not, they will be asked to schedule an appointment at an overseas visa application centre (VAC). They will find out if they need an appointment when they start their application.

For applicants who are required to attend a VAC, they will need to enrol their biometric information at this appointment, including a scan of their fingerprints and a photograph of their face. They will also need to take with them their passport or travel document, and any other documents needed in support of their application, where the VAC may need to keep the applicant’s passport and documentation while processing their application.

An application can be made for a Seasonal Worker visa up to 3 months before the day the applicant is due to start work in the UK. This date will be listed on the CoS, where the certificate will only be valid for 3 months from the date it is assigned to the applicant.

Once the applicant has proved their identity, provided their supporting documents and enrolled any biometric information, it will usually take up to 3 weeks for a decision to be made. However, if applying for a visa through a VAC, the applicant may be able to pay for a faster decision, although this will depend on where they are applying from.

On the grant of a Seasonal Worker visa, the visa-holder can enter the UK up to 14 days before their start date, as set out on the CoS. Once in the UK, the visa-holder will be able to work in the job role as described in their CoS, and undertake a short course of study, although they will not be able to accept a permanent job or work in a second job. The dependants of a Seasonal Worker also cannot apply to join the visa-holder on this route.

What documents are needed for a Seasonal Worker visa?

To apply for a Seasonal Worker visa, the applicant will need a number of documents in support, including a valid passport or other travel document to prove their identity. The applicant must have a blank page in their passport or space in their document for their visa. They will also need proof of funds to show that they meet the financial requirement, unless their sponsor is prepared to certify maintenance up to the amount of £1270 on their CoS.

The CoS is an electronic record of the applicant’s personal details and sponsored job role in the UK. However, the applicant will need to use the unique reference number from their certificate when submitting their application, which UKVI can then access online.

In some cases, the UKVI caseworker deciding the application may request additional documentation, depending on the applicant’s circumstances. For any documents not in English or Welsh, apart from the applicant’s passport, a certified translation will be needed.

Can you extend your Seasonal Worker visa?

The initial length of a Seasonal Worker visa will depend on whether the applicant is applying to come to the UK as a horticultural or poultry production worker. If working within the horticulture sector, a visa-holder can stay in the UK for a maximum of 6 months in any 12-month period. In contrast, if they will be working within the poultry production sector, they can only work between 2 October to 31 December inclusive each year.

A Seasonal Worker visa cannot be extended. Additionally, upon expiry of this visa, a 6-month cooling off period usually applies to each visa-holder, where they will be required to leave the UK and wait for 6 months to elapse before being eligible to re-apply on this route.

Longer-term UK work visa options

You would need to apply for a longer term work visa if you intend to stay in the UK for more than When it comes to longer term work visa options, it may be possible for a Seasonal Worker to apply for a different type of visa, although they will usually need to leave the UK to do this. They may also need the offer of a sponsored job role. For example, to apply for a Skilled Worker visa, they would need the offer of a job that meets the minimum skill and salary requirements for this route from an employer licensed to sponsor this category of worker. To explore the possible options, seeking expert advice is strongly recommended.

How to Write a Résumé for a Seasonal Job (Sample & Template)

’Tis the season to write a résumé — fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.

How to Write a Résumé for a Seasonal Job

Whether you’re applying for a  Christmas  or a  summer job , you’re going to need a résumé that helps you stand out from the sea of applications. Although the jobs are temporary, competition is incredibly stiff, so your résumé needs to capture the hiring manager’s attention from the get-go — after all, you only have about 30 seconds to end up in the “yes” pile, so you need to make every second count.

If you’re at a loss to writing your very own résumé , you’ve come to the right place!

Here, we’ll walk you through all the steps you need to take to write the perfect résumé for a seasonal job, complete with a sample for inspiration!

What is a seasonal résumé?

A seasonal résumé is basically the same thing as a normal résumé, but with a special focus on seasonal jobs. It’s essentially a short document (typically a page long) that emphasizes all the reasons you’d make a fantastic seasonal worker. Aside from showcasing the skills and experience most relevant to the job, it’s also a way of saying that you’re available right now and eager to get to work.

Since hiring managers looking for temporary employees work in tight timeframes, seasonal résumés need to be concise and tailored. The summary, skills and experiences listed should all point to the applicant’s know-how and dependability. This is for two reasons: one, temporary workers aren’t usually given much training due to time constraints. And two, a lack of commitment is one of the most common downsides of hiring seasonal workers. At a time when employee loyalty is low to begin with, proving that you’re reliable is essential.

When to apply for seasonal jobs

When going after seasonal jobs, it’s good to be proactive. If you have your eye on a specific company, for example, you could reach out before they’ve advertised any positions and ask when they’ll start accepting applications for the holiday season. That way, you can take your time perfecting your résumé and submit your application ahead of most other candidates.

If there’s no specific company (or companies) you’d like to work for, a good rule of the thumb is to start looking at job listings a few months in advance. For example, Christmas jobs are sometimes advertised as early as October. If, on the other hand, you’d like to work at a summer camp, you could be faced with an application deadline months before the job start date, in the middle of winter. Doing your research is important so you know what to expect.

Steps to writing a seasonal résumé

With employers receiving hundreds of applications for a single job opening, you’ll need to find the most concise way to illuminate the reasons you’d be a great fit. (Hint: bullet points are your friend!)

And, like in any job search, whether that’s for seasonal work or a permanent, full-time role, your résumé needs to be carefully tailored. As over 50% of employers rely on recruiting software to save time, you’ll have both humans and machines putting your résumé to the test. Let’s look at what you can do to improve your odds!

Step 1: Choose the right format

Selecting the right format for your résumé is an essential part of the entire writing process.

For someone with little to no work experience under their belt, a  skill-based résumé  will be more applicable, because you can focus on highlighting your skills rather than on your experience. On the other hand, if you have a lengthy employment history, then a  chronological résumé , which lists your experience in reverse-chronological order, is best.

So, before starting the writing process, do some research on the different résumé formats and identify which one best suits your specific skills, experience and overall career situation.

Step 2: Prepare the structure

After you’ve decided on the most appropriate format, you need to outline your résumé’s structure . If you already have some work experience but are still at the early stages of your career, for example, you could separate your résumé into the following sections:

Work experience

Hobbies and interests.

Once you have this structure in place, you can begin writing your résumé.

If you’re still confused, here’s what you need to include in each section:

The résumé header should list your contact information. In some countries, you may need to include  personal details , too — for example, , you’ll will need to include your marital status if you’re applying for jobs in the Middle East.

Generally speaking, here’s what should go in the header section of your résumé:

  • Your professional title
  • Your location
  • Your phone number
  • Your email address
  • Your LinkedIn profile
  • Your  website (if applicable)

The summary section, or  career objective , acts as a personal introduction. Essentially, it’s a short description of who you are as a professional and what you can offer potential employers. It should generally be between three and five lines long, and include only the essential information.

Don’t waste this space with clichés like “seeking a position in a busy work environment”. This is redundant, and hiring managers know that you’re looking for a new position since you’re applying for the role!

List your  education  in reverse-chronological order, but don’t go further back than high school. If you’re currently a university student, you can just add your expected graduation date.

Within this section, be sure to include the following:

  • School/Institution name
  • Degree type and subject (eg: “BA in English Language and Literature”)
  • Dates of study

Within the  experience section , you should list any and all relevant jobs that you’ve held in reverse-chronological order. Be sure to include your job title, place and location of work, as well as employment dates. Within each description, list the duties and responsibilities that you had, along with any notable achievements.

The  skills section  is the place where you can highlight all the transferable skills that you’ve acquired along the way, including at school or university, or from a previous job. Just make sure you align the skills with those that are needed for the job. For example, if you’re applying for a  job in retail , it’s a good idea to mention your  customer service  and  attention-to-detail skills .

Including a  hobbies section  is completely optional but is usually recommended when you don’t have a lot of work experience to show. You can use extracurricular activities to showcase any additional skills that you possess. It can also be a great way to showcase your personality and win the employer over.

This part is quite straightforward. List all the languages that you speak, along with your proficiency level for each one.

Step 3: Tailor your résumé

No matter the role, it’s essential that you  tailor your résumé  to the job that you’re applying for. If you don’t, your chances of actually securing the role are very slim!

Say you have a lot of retail experience but are applying for a role within hospitality. Be sure to highlight your customer service skills, as well as any interests you have in cooking, baking or traveling. It will help you get past  applicant tracking systems  and one step closer to a  job interview .

Step 4: Use the job description as a guide

If you’ve read the job description and decided that you have what it takes to do the job, then you’re going to need to make sure your résumé does exactly the same: makes it look like you have what it takes to do well.

So, when you’re writing your résumé, use the job description as a guide to ensure you’re using the correct keywords and showcasing the skills that the hiring manager will be looking for. For example, if they say they want someone with a great attention to detail, use your résumé and cover letter to showcase how you used this skill to do well in a previous role.

Step 5: Highlight your transferable skills

If you don’t have a lot of work experience, focus on highlighting your transferrable skills. For example, if you completed your dissertation in time, despite certain challenges, this shows that you’re a great  problem solver . It also shows that you have good  organization skills  and are capable of planning — something that the hiring manager will find desirable in a candidate.

Step 6: Don’t lie

Although it’s tempting to exaggerate your skills and experience to ensure that you get the role, don’t do it! It really isn’t worth it in the long run, and the employer will see straight through your lies during the interview process — or, worse, after you get the job!

By doing so, the employer will also lose trust in you, and you could risk losing your job or getting a bad reference. So, make sure that you always tell the truth and explain that you’re willing to learn and enhance your skills.

Step 7: Proofread

A résumé full of typos and grammatical errors is going to place you firmly in the “no” pile, regardless whether you have the skills and experience to succeed. It shows that you’re careless and that you lack an attention to detail — proving that you didn’t put much effort into your application.

So, before you hit the “Send” button, be sure to triple-check your CV for grammar and spelling, as well as dates, statistics and everything else! Tools like Grammarly are particularly useful, or you could enlist the help of a friend — especially one who’s good at writing!

Step 8: Attach a cover letter

Now that you’ve finished your résumé, it’s time to focus on your  cover letter , which is meant to support your application and enhance the content already included in your résumé.

While hiring managers don’t directly ask for a cover letter in the job application, you should always assume that one is required. It’s an additional chance of being able to highlight your skills and show why they should hire you over one of the other candidates.

That said, your cover letter doesn’t need to be long — it should be between three and five characters long, detailing why you applied for the role, what skills you have, and a few examples of where these skills have helped you succeed in the past. You can finish off by listing the ways that you can be contacted to set up an interview.

More opportunities for Seasonal Workers in New Zealand

Global immigration news round-up, uk seasonal worker visa route extended for 5 years.

16 May 2024

The UK government has announced that it will extend the Seasonal Worker visa route for five years until 2029, “to give businesses time to plan effectively, to invest in automation and move away from a reliance on migrant labour”.

43,000 visas will be available to the horticulture sector in 2025, with another 2000 visas for poultry. Further detail of the number of visas available for 2026 to 2029 will be set out later this year.  This represents a reduction of 2000 visas in addition to removing the extra 10,000 visas potentially available if sector demand had required.

The government will also work to improve the attractiveness of the sector for domestic workers, delivering regional recruitment strategies to support jobseekers into roles in food and farming, and building greater collaboration between government, industry and education providers.

The Migration Advisory Committee’s ongoing inquiry into the Seasonal Worker visa route is due to be published in summer 2024.

What is a Seasonal Worker visa?

The Seasonal Worker visa is designed to allow overseas nationals to come to the UK to undertake temporary work in specific sectors.

You can apply for a Seasonal Worker visa to come to the UK and work in:

  • The Horticulture sector for up to 6 months – for example, picking fruit and vegetables or flowers.
  • The Poultry sector from 2 October to 31 December, in the same year.

In order to apply for a Seasonal Worker visa, you must have a job offer from an approved sponsor in the UK and meet the eligibility requirements for the route.

Seasonal Worker sponsorship requirements

In order to sponsor a Seasonal Worker, you must be an approved scheme operator and hold a valid Temporary Worker sponsor licence for the Seasonal Worker route.

There are already overarching bodies (scheme operators) which have been approved for a sponsor licence for this route to sponsor workers in poultry production and/or horticulture. No further scheme operators will be issued with a sponsor licence on this route without prior approval to be a scheme operator.

Individual employers and organisations are not eligible for a sponsor licence on this route, even if they are licensed as a sponsor on other routes.

Employers that have already been granted a licence must comply with all sponsor duties (including additional responsibilities as an approved scheme operator). Failure to maintain compliance could result in the licence being downgraded, suspended or revoked.
