1992-2004: early life & career beginnings.
Selena as a child
Selena was born in Grand Prairie, Texas [5] . She is the daughter of former stage actress, Amanda Dawn Mandy Cornett & Ricardo Joel Rick Gomez . [6] Her father is of Mexican ancestry; her mother, who was adopted, is of Italian ancestry. Regarding her Hispanic heritage, Gomez has stated, "My family does have Quinceañeras, and we go to the communion church. We do everything that's Catholic, but we don't really have anything traditional except [that we] go to the park and have barbecues on Sundays after church." [7] Her birth parents divorced when she was five years old, and she was raised as an only child by her working mother. In 2006, Mandy remarried Brian Teefey .
This led to the family having financial troubles, with her mother struggling to provide for them. On the situation, Gomez stated, "I remember my mom would run out of gas all of the time and we’d sit there and have to go through the car and get quarters and help her get gas because she never liked to ask my grandparents for money. I remember having a lot of macaroni and cheese but my mom never made it seem like it was a big deal. She was really strong around me. Having me at 16 had to have been a big responsibility. My mom gave up everything for me, had three jobs, supported me, sacrificed her life for me." [8]
Gomez later elaborated on the topic, stating "I definitely didn't appreciate it when I was little. I was frustrated that my parents weren't together, and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. I'm terrified of what I would have become if I'd stayed in Texas." She was named after Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez , who died almost three years after Gomez was born.
While attending school as a child, Gomez has stated on numerous occasions that she was the victim of bullying. [9] When speaking of the situation, Gomez said "I was bullied every second of every day in elementary and middle school Obviously, people are going to bring you down because of your drive. But, ultimately, it makes you a stronger person to turn your cheek and go the other way." She later added, "I was never the popular kid at school. I had two friends, but I just sat at the back of the room and got on with my work. School is such an awkward time in your life. I was never confident in school." In a 2009 interview with People , Gomez mentioned that she developed an early interest in acting from watching her mother prepare for and act in theatre productions. She earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010. [10]
Gomez began her acting career at age seven, playing Gianna on Barney & Friends . She later had minor roles in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and the TV film Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial By Fire . Gomez also starred in the television movie Brain Zapped .

Speaking of the song, she said, "I think this song is such a great message for my fans, and it really touched me when I heard it, and I thought it would be perfect for them." The album, " When the Sun Goes Down ", hit the shelves on June 28, 2011 and was followed by a world tour.
In 2013, Selena took part in R-rated movie " Spring Breakers " in addition to readying her fourth album. The effort titled " Stars Dance " became her first project as a solo artist. After putting out the album which landed atop Billboard 200, she shifted her focus back on acting. She appeared in " Getaway ", " Behaving " and " Rudderless " among others before announcing her first hit solo album called " For You " in late 2014.
The album marked Selena's last project with Hollywood Records. In early 2015, she joined Insterscope Records and sparked dating rumors with labelmate Zedd after they were spotted together in multiple occasions. At the same time, it was rumored that Selena had called it quits with Justin Bieber after so much drama in their relationship. It was later revealed that Selena and Zedd were working on a collaboration for the DJ's new album. Their collaborative track "I Want You to Know" arrived in February 2015 as the lead single off Zedd's " True Colors ".
Later in June, Selena announced her own single "Good for You". Featuring a guest verse from A$AP Rocky , the song served as the first offering from Selena's first album for Insterscope. Her second solo project " Revival " was then released on October 9. The set was given positive reviews by critics, and it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200.
Selena embarked on her worldwide "Revival Tour" on May 6, 2016. After touring across North America, Asia and Oceania, she canceled the European and South American leg of the tour in August due to anxiety, panic attacks and depression caused by lupus. Following the cancellation, Selena rechecked into rehab to focus on her mental health and was noticeably absent from social media. She made her first public appearance since the rehab at the 2016 American Music Awards.
In the following year, Selena was caught kissing The Weeknd in Los Angeles. The two eventually confirmed their relationship by posting a photo of each other on Instagram. Selena was then back into the music scene as her collaboration with Kygo , "It Ain't Me", arrived in February, reaching the top 10 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Amid her busy schedule as an executive producer of Netflix's series " 13 Reasons Why ", Selena has been hitting the studio to work on new album. She reportedly enlists Ryan Tedder , Julia Michaels , Justin Tranter and more for the upcoming effort. On June 18, Selena gave fans the first taste of her new album with single "Bad Liar".
"Bad Liar" was received very well by both fans and music critics, being listed as the best single of 2017 by Billboard. It also reached the top 20 in music charts all around the world, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Lebanon and New Zealand. Following the success of the single, Selena released another single titled "Fetish" on July 13 as well as a Marshmello collaboration called "Wolves" on October 25. Just like "Bad Liar", the two singles were also well-received by music lovers.
Besides treating fans with three new singles that year, Selena also gave fans an update on her battle with lupus. She announced via Instagram in September that she had received a kidney transplant from her actress friend Francia Raisa . During the transplant, Selena broke an artery that prompted her to undergo an emergency surgery to build a new artery using a vein from her leg. Fortunately for her, the emergency went well.
Later in November, Selena was recognized as the Billboard Woman of the Year for frequently inspiring young women all around the world to be authentic and to not be afraid to raise their voices. She joined an illustrious group of previous Woman of the Year honorees, including Lady GaGa , Taylor Swift and Katy Perry .
2018 was also a busy year for Selena. In addition to releasing a new single "Back to You" for the soundtrack of " 13 Reasons Why " season 2, she reprised her role as Mavis in " Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ", which was premiered in July. In that same month, Los Angeles prosecutors announced that a New Jersey woman had been charged with hacking into email accounts belonging to the singer.
Later in September, Selena joined forces with DJ Snake , Ozuna and Cardi B for "Taki Taki", which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and won several music awards. Shortly after the release of the song, Selena checked into a rehab facility for her mental health issue. Her stay in the facility didn't last long, though, as she was released a month later.
She continued spending relaxing time with friends following her rehab stint, until later in February 2019, Selena joined forces with Benny Bianco , Tainy and J Balvin for "I Can't Get Enough". She also appeared in Jim Jarmusch's film " The Dead Don't Die " and executive produced Netflix docuseries " Living Undocumented " that followed eight undocumented families in the United States.
Selena began the promotion of her third studio album in October, releasing its lead single "Lose You to Love Me", which debuted at No. 15 on Billboard's Hot 100, as well as "Look at Her Now".

Selena Gomez, in full Selena Marie Gomez, (born July 22, 1992, Grand Prairie, Texas, U.S.), American actress and singer who won legions of young fans as the winsome star of the Disney television series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–12) and as a pop vocalist.
Gomez, who was named after the popular Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was raised in suburban Dallas. Inspired by her mother, an amateur actress, Gomez tried out for a role on the PBS children’s television series Barney & Friends and, as a result, appeared regularly on the program in 2002–04. After making her big-screen debut in the family movie Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), she auditioned for the Disney Channel, which eventually led to a guest spot on the TV series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In 2007 Gomez was cast as Alex Russo, a mischievous tomboy with magical powers, on a new Disney sitcom, Wizards of Waverly Place. The show, for which she also sang the theme song, became an instant hit among the preteen set, and she earned favourable comparisons to the channel’s leading ingenue, Miley Cyrus .
While continuing to star in Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez acted in various tween-oriented videos and TV movies and provided a voice for the animated feature Horton Hears a Who! (2008). She then landed lead roles in the theatrical film Ramona and Beezus (2010), which was based on a children’s novel by Beverly Cleary, and the romantic comedy Monte Carlo (2011). Gomez departed from her family-friendly image with a role as a college student seeking adventure in Florida in the lurid Spring Breakers (2012). She then portrayed the girlfriend of a college student who is killed in a shooting on campus in the drama Rudderless (2014) and a sorority sister in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016). Gomez also voiced a character in the animated Hotel Transylvania (2012) and its sequels (2015, 2018) as well as Dolittle (2020). In 2019 she appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s zombie movie The Dead Don’t Die and in Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York. She returned to TV for Only Murders in the Building (2021– ), in which she costarred with Steve Martin and Martin Short as an unlikely crime-solving trio.
Gomez ventured into music as the front woman of Selena Gomez & the Scene, an electronic-influenced pop band that produced several dance hits. The group released the albums Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), and When the Sun Goes Down (2011) before announcing its separation in 2012.
Gomez then forged a solo career with Stars Dance (2013), which featured the seductive single “Come & Get It.” Subsequent solo albums included Revival (2015) and Rare (2020), the latter of which yielded the hit ballad “Lose You to Love Me.” In 2023 she collaborated with Nigerian superstar Rema on the Remix of “Calm Down” song, which was a world success.
As Gomez transitioned into adulthood, her fame was undoubtedly magnified by a romantic relationship with pop singer Justin Bieber . She was also known for her philanthropic work, much of it accomplished through UNICEF, which in 2009 appointed her a goodwill ambassador. In 2015 Gomez revealed that she had been diagnosed with lupus. As a result of complications from the disease, she had a kidney transplant in 2017. During this time Gomez was also candid about her struggles with depression and anxiety, and in 2020 she revealed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In the documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me (2022), she discussed her mental health and her struggles with fame.
