Selena Gomez Now: Wins Cannes Best Actress for Emilia Pérez

Selena Gomez wasn’t at the Cannes Film Festival to receive her Best Actress award win for Emilia Pérez , but that didn’t damper the 31-year-old’s excitement. Gomez was in New York City during the festival award ceremony on May 25 and learned of the honor in a phone call from co-star Zoe Saldaña . The two shared the award with fellow Emilia Pérez Adriana Paz and Karla Sofía Gascón for the musical crime comedy.

“Thank you SO much @festivaldecannes and the whole board,” Gomez wrote in an Instagram story.

Cannes jury president Greta Gerwig explained the decision, saying that awarding only one of the women in the movie would have undermined their collective effort. “Women together—that’s something we wanted to honor when we made this award. Each of them is a standout, but together transcendent,” she said .

She landed a small role in the movie Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003 and a bit part as Julie on Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire in 2005. She also signed on to play Emily Grace Garcia in Brain Zapped in 2006, and even recorded a song for the show.

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Wizards of Waverly Place

In 2006, Gomez guest starred as Gwen in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody on the Disney Channel. Earning more work from Disney, Gomez was tapped to play the evil Mikayla for the Hannah Montana series.

She then landed her first starring role when the channel cast her as Alex Russo in the show Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007. The hit series ran for four seasons, until 2012, and won two Emmys for Outstanding Children’s Program.

News broke in January 2024 that Gomez will serve as an executive producer on a reboot of the series, this time focused on Alex’s brother. The actor will guest star in the pilot episode, due out later in the year on Disney Channel and Disney+.

Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program

In 2008, Gomez made her first animated movie, Horton Hears a Who! , and starred in the ABC Family movie Another Cinderella Story with fellow Disney Channel actor Andrew Seeley. New Movies: Emilia Peréz and Linda Ronstadt Biopic

In addition to her upcoming TV appearances on Only Murders In The Building and the Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff, Gomez is set to return to the silver screen in a couple of buzzworthy projects. She has a supporting role in Emilia Peréz , a Spanish-language film about a Mexican drug lord who transitions into a woman. The musical comedy premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to wide praise, with Gomez and her co-stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña , and Adriana Paz sharing the best actress award. A release date in the United States hasn’t yet been announced.

Elsewhere, Gomez is set to star as 11-time Grammy-winner Linda Ronstadt in a new biopic directed by David O. Russell. The movie is in the early stages of production.

Along with her acting, Gomez began building a music career by recording soundtrack songs in 2008 and 2009. That included three tunes for the soundtrack to her movie Another Cinderella Story , a song for the animated movie Tinker Bell , the single “One and the Same” for Princess Protection Program as a duet with co-star Demi Lovato , as well as four songs for the soundtrack to Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie .

Soon, Gomez moved on to original music as the lead singer of Selena Gomez & the Scene. The pop band, which had a contract with Hollywood Records, released three albums: Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), and When the Sun Goes Down (2011). Some of their popular songs included “Love You Like a Love Song,” “Who Says,” and “Naturally.” The group split up in 2012.

Solo Albums

Far from the end of her musical journey, Gomez embarked on a solo career the next year. She has released three studio albums, all of which have topped the Billboard 200 upon release, and a Spanish-language EP.

Stars Dance

Her solo debut album released in August 2013. It featured two early hits for Gomez: “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down.” Both songs are now multiplatinum.

Revival went platinum six months after its October 2015 release. It also introduced a new, more adult side of Gomez, who had long been in the shadows of her Disney stardom. Songs included the platinum single “Kill Em With Kindness” and multiplatinum hits “Hands To Myself” and “Same Old Love.”

Gomez’s third studio album came in January 2020. Not reaching the same level of success as her sophomore album, Rare nonetheless included the singer’s first Billboard No. 1 song “Lose You To Love Me.”

Revelación (EP)

Her Spanish-language EP, released in March 2021, didn’t rise to the commercial success of her albums, but it captured critical acclaim, earning Gomez her first Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

Gomez has shared she is working on a new album, sharing photos from inside a recording studio in June 2023. She hasn’t announced its name or details about its release other than to say she “hopes” it will be in 2024 .

Gomez has regularly graced the Billboard Hot 100. Her first Top 10 hit, “Come & Get It,” came in April 2013. “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” “Good For You” featuring A$AP Rocky , “Same Old Love,” and “Hands To Myself” followed. Then, in November 2019, “Lose You To Love Me” soared to No. 1 ahead of its inclusion on her third album, Rare .

Other popular songs include 2017’s “Bad Liar,” “Fetish” featuring Gucci Mane, and “It Ain’t Me,” a collaboration with Norwegian DJ Kygo. She also teamed up with the mysterious Marshmello for ”Wolves.” In May 2018, Gomez released the track “Back to You” for Netflix’s teen suicide drama 13 Reasons Why .

More recently, Gomez has found success on collaboration singles, such as “Baila Conmigo” with Rauw Alejandro, “Let Somebody Go” with Coldplay, and “Calm Down” with Rema. Her newest songs include “Single Soon,” which cracked the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 after its August 2023 release, and “Love On.”

Billboard’s Woman of the Year

In November 2017, months after undergoing kidney transplant surgery, Gomez was named woman of the year at the annual Billboard Women in Music event. “I would like to thank my amazing team and my family because they stuck with me through some really hard times,” she told the crowd. “And I got to do a lot this year, even though I had a couple of other things to do.”

In early January 2014, it was reported that Gomez had been battling lupus—an autoimmune disease that can cause facial swelling, fatigue, headaches, and joint pain—for more than two years. In September 2017, the multitalented artist revealed that advancing symptoms of lupus had forced her to undergo a kidney transplant earlier in the year, with her roommate and friend Francia Raísa serving as the donor.

One month later, Gomez provided details of the experience with The Today show’s Savannah Guthrie in an NBC news interview: “She lived with me in this interesting time where my kidneys were just done,” Gomez recalled. “The thought of asking somebody to [donate] was really difficult for me. And she volunteered and did it… The fact that she was a match, I mean, that’s unbelievable.”

Thanks to Raísa, Gomez was able to quickly move to the operating room for the life-saving procedure. While there were additional complications during the operation, Gomez has recovered nicely, noting that there was a 3 to 5 percent chance of her lupus resurfacing.

In November 2017, Gomez was honored at the Lupus Research Alliance Annual Gala in New York City for helping to raise more than $500,000 toward research for the disease. During her speech, she recalled the moment doctors stressed to her the urgency of undergoing a transplant procedure. “It actually got to a point where it was life-or-death,” she said. “Thankfully, one of my best friends gave me her kidney, and it was the ultimate gift of life. And I am doing quite well now.”

The chart-topping artist, who previously spoke about her battles with anxiety and depression, revealed in an April 2020 interview with Miley Cyrus that she had been diagnosed as bipolar. “When I got to know more information, it actually helps me,” Gomez told her fellow former Disney star. “It doesn’t scare me once I know it.”

Gomez opened up even more about her mental health in the 2022 Apple TV+ documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me , revealing that she was initially skeptical about getting help. “I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t wanna go to the mental health hospital,” she says in the documentary. “I didn’t want to, but I didn’t want to be trapped in myself and my mind anymore. I thought my life was over. I thought, ‘This is what my life’s going to be like forever.’”

Choosing to make a documentary about something so personal was difficult. So was watching the final version. “It’s very hard for me to watch,” Gomez said in 2023 . “I will never watch it again, but I’m very proud of it.”

Outside of acting and music, Gomez has delved into business. In 2017, she teamed with Coach to launch the Selena Grace line of handbags and accessories, and the following year, the two sides collaborated again for a ready-to-wear collection.

September 2020 saw the launch of Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez, her massively popular makeup line, and the Rare Impact Fund, its philanthropic partner dedicated to mental health. Each year, 1 percent of product sales are donated to the charitable venture; as of April 2024, Rare Impact Fund has raised more than $13 million . Bloomberg reported in July 2023 that the company sold $70 million worth of a liquid blush year to date and the company expected to triple its overall says year over year.

Additionally, Gomez has served as a spokesperson for Borden Milk, appearing in the organization’s advertising campaign and print ads. She also worked on a campaign that encouraged teenagers to learn more about the 2008 presidential candidates. A supporter of UNICEF, 17-year-old Gomez became one of the organization’s ambassadors in 2009 and works to help children around the world through her C.A.N. (Charity, Action, Now) initiative.

Gomez is currently dating music producer and songwriter Benny Blanco. She confirmed their relationship on social media in December 2023, stating they had been together for six months at that point. The pair have known each other for many years and have also worked together on songs such as 2015’s “Same Old Love,” 2019’s “I Can’t Get Enough” with J Balvin , and 2023’s “Single Soon.”

When they were just friends, Gomez once asked Blanco if he could set her up with someone he knew. He introduced her to a friend at a birthday party, and it was then the singer realized the person she had feelings for was actually Blanco.

Likewise, the music producer didn’t realize how deep his feelings were for Gomez. “I was the last one to know,” he said in an April 2024 interview with WSJ magazine . “It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don’t even notice, and then you have that Clueless moment where you’re like ‘Wait, I’m in love.’”

Past Relationships: Justin Bieber and More

Gomez previously dated fellow musicians Nick Jonas , Zedd, and The Weeknd , as well as been romantically linked to other stars. But her most well-known relationship has been with pop star Justin Bieber .

She and Bieber first met in 2009 and eventually entered into an on- and off-again relationship. Even after their final breakup in early 2018, the romance still provides fodder for the celebrity gossip mill. In 2023, the internet was aroar over a social media drama between Gomez and Hailey Bieber, whom Justin married in September 2018.

Gomez has publicly feuded with her mother, Mandy Teefy. The two unfollowed each other on Instagram in December 2017, with some speculating it was because the singer had rekindled her romance with Bieber, though another source said the situation was more complicated than that. Teefy later told Gossip Cop that she wasn’t happy with her daughter dating Bieber, but said there was little she could do about it. “Selena can live her life however she wants as long as she is happy, safe and healthy,” she said.

According to Celebrity Net Worth , Gomez’s total fortune is estimated at around $800 million as of April 2024. This is primarily due to the success of Rare Beauty. The brand was reportedly on pace to generate at least $300 million in 2023 and has an estimated valuation between $1.2 billion and $2 billion .

Life & career

1992-2004: early life & career beginnings.

Young selena

Selena as a child

Selena was born in Grand Prairie, Texas [5] . She is the daughter of former stage actress, Amanda Dawn Mandy Cornett & Ricardo Joel Rick Gomez . [6] Her father is of Mexican ancestry; her mother, who was adopted, is of Italian ancestry. Regarding her Hispanic heritage, Gomez has stated, "My family does have Quinceañeras, and we go to the communion church. We do everything that's Catholic, but we don't really have anything traditional except [that we] go to the park and have barbecues on Sundays after church." [7] Her birth parents divorced when she was five years old, and she was raised as an only child by her working mother. In 2006, Mandy remarried Brian Teefey .

This led to the family having financial troubles, with her mother struggling to provide for them. On the situation, Gomez stated, "I remember my mom would run out of gas all of the time and we’d sit there and have to go through the car and get quarters and help her get gas because she never liked to ask my grandparents for money. I remember having a lot of macaroni and cheese but my mom never made it seem like it was a big deal. She was really strong around me. Having me at 16 had to have been a big responsibility. My mom gave up everything for me, had three jobs, supported me, sacrificed her life for me." [8]

Gomez later elaborated on the topic, stating "I definitely didn't appreciate it when I was little. I was frustrated that my parents weren't together, and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. I'm terrified of what I would have become if I'd stayed in Texas." She was named after Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez , who died almost three years after Gomez was born.

While attending school as a child, Gomez has stated on numerous occasions that she was the victim of bullying. [9] When speaking of the situation, Gomez said "I was bullied every second of every day in elementary and middle school Obviously, people are going to bring you down because of your drive. But, ultimately, it makes you a stronger person to turn your cheek and go the other way." She later added, "I was never the popular kid at school. I had two friends, but I just sat at the back of the room and got on with my work. School is such an awkward time in your life. I was never confident in school." In a 2009 interview with People , Gomez mentioned that she developed an early interest in acting from watching her mother prepare for and act in theatre productions. She earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010. [10]

Gomez began her acting career at age seven, playing Gianna on Barney & Friends . She later had minor roles in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and the TV film Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial By Fire . Gomez also starred in the television movie Brain Zapped .

In 2004, Gomez was discovered by the Disney Channel in a USA-wide scouting. Gomez appeared as a guest star on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and had a guest appearance – that later turned into a recurring role – on Hannah Montana from seasons two to three. Gomez previously taped two different pilots that were spin-offs to two previous Disney series. The first one, What's Stevie Thinking? , was the spin-off to Lizzie McGuire . Gomez played Stevie Sanchez, Miranda Sanchez's little sister. The other show was titled Arwin! , the spin-off to The Suite Life of Zack & Cody , in which she played Alexa. Neither series was picked up.

Little Selena grew up watching her mother prepare for performances. At 7, she got a role in "Barney and Friends" and later in "Spy Kids 3-D; Game Over". Her talent was discovered by Disney Channel through nationwide search. Her first stint on the channel was a guest star on "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" and " Hannah Montana ". Blessed with potential, Selena was given her own show as one of the three kid wizards on " Wizards of Waverly Place ".

Besides pursuing career in television, Selena scored minor roles in " Another Cinderella Story " and " Horton Hears a Who! ". Her career in Disney got the boost as fellow teenage star Demi Lovato also gained popularity. Together, the best friends starred in a TV movie called " Princess Protection Program ". Due to the success of her TV series, Disney ordered the production of " Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie ".

Since then, Selena enjoyed the title of Disney darling. Known for acting, Selena also thrives on singing. She recorded for a Disneymania album and "Another Cinderella Story" soundtrack. Hollywood Records then presented her with recording contract in 2008. She struck a close friendship with the members of Forever the Sickest Kids and made a collaboration on a song titled "Whoa Oh!".

Selena then formed a music band and called them The Scene . The first album " Kiss & Tell " was released in September 209 with its first single titled "Naturally". The album peaked at No. 9 on Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by RIAA.

Selena's first major breakout into the movie world was as one of the titular characters in " Ramone and Beezus ". Movie offers kept rolling since then, including " Monte Carlo " and " 13 Reasons Why ". At the same time, Selena announced her last year on "Wizards of Waverly Place".

Selena is also known for her philanthropic works such as being the ambassador for UNICEF. She has done numerous efforts to provide clean water for Ghana and encouraged children to be environmentally-friendly through Disney's Friends for Change.

Business-wise, Selena developed a production house called July Moon Productions and launched a clothing line called Dream Out Loud. Since she is a green advocate, the line features recycled or eco-friendly materials.

Selena Gomez and the Scene began recording their second studio album in 2009. The effort titled " A Year Without Rain " was eventually released in September 2010 and did even better on Billboard 200, compared to their previous album.

Selena's personal life was put on the spotlight right after she shot to massive fame. She was first rumored dating fellow Disney star Nick Jonas before distance separated them. But her biggest high-profiled relationship was with Justin Bieber . They went on some public appearances together when both of their careers were at peaks.

In early 2011, Selena began promoting her third studio album with the release of "Who Says". Speaking of the song, she said, "I think this song is such a great message for my fans, and it really touched me when I heard it, and I thought it would be perfect for them." The album, " When the Sun Goes Down ", hit the shelves on June 28, 2011 and was followed by a world tour.

In 2013, Selena took part in R-rated movie " Spring Breakers " in addition to readying her fourth album. The effort titled " Stars Dance " became her first project as a solo artist. After putting out the album which landed atop Billboard 200, she shifted her focus back on acting. She appeared in " Getaway ", " Behaving " and " Rudderless " among others before announcing her first hit solo album called " For You " in late 2014.

The album marked Selena's last project with Hollywood Records. In early 2015, she joined Insterscope Records and sparked dating rumors with labelmate Zedd after they were spotted together in multiple occasions. At the same time, it was rumored that Selena had called it quits with Justin Bieber after so much drama in their relationship. It was later revealed that Selena and Zedd were working on a collaboration for the DJ's new album. Their collaborative track "I Want You to Know" arrived in February 2015 as the lead single off Zedd's " True Colors ".

Later in June, Selena announced her own single "Good for You". Featuring a guest verse from A$AP Rocky , the song served as the first offering from Selena's first album for Insterscope. Her second solo project " Revival " was then released on October 9. The set was given positive reviews by critics, and it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200.

Selena embarked on her worldwide "Revival Tour" on May 6, 2016. After touring across North America, Asia and Oceania, she canceled the European and South American leg of the tour in August due to anxiety, panic attacks and depression caused by lupus. Following the cancellation, Selena rechecked into rehab to focus on her mental health and was noticeably absent from social media. She made her first public appearance since the rehab at the 2016 American Music Awards.

In the following year, Selena was caught kissing The Weeknd in Los Angeles. The two eventually confirmed their relationship by posting a photo of each other on Instagram. Selena was then back into the music scene as her collaboration with Kygo , "It Ain't Me", arrived in February, reaching the top 10 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Amid her busy schedule as an executive producer of Netflix's series " 13 Reasons Why ", Selena has been hitting the studio to work on new album. She reportedly enlists Ryan Tedder , Julia Michaels , Justin Tranter and more for the upcoming effort. On June 18, Selena gave fans the first taste of her new album with single "Bad Liar".

"Bad Liar" was received very well by both fans and music critics, being listed as the best single of 2017 by Billboard. It also reached the top 20 in music charts all around the world, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Lebanon and New Zealand. Following the success of the single, Selena released another single titled "Fetish" on July 13 as well as a Marshmello collaboration called "Wolves" on October 25. Just like "Bad Liar", the two singles were also well-received by music lovers.

Besides treating fans with three new singles that year, Selena also gave fans an update on her battle with lupus. She announced via Instagram in September that she had received a kidney transplant from her actress friend Francia Raisa . During the transplant, Selena broke an artery that prompted her to undergo an emergency surgery to build a new artery using a vein from her leg. Fortunately for her, the emergency went well.

Later in November, Selena was recognized as the Billboard Woman of the Year for frequently inspiring young women all around the world to be authentic and to not be afraid to raise their voices. She joined an illustrious group of previous Woman of the Year honorees, including Lady GaGa , Taylor Swift and Katy Perry .

2018 was also a busy year for Selena. In addition to releasing a new single "Back to You" for the soundtrack of " 13 Reasons Why " season 2, she reprised her role as Mavis in " Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ", which was premiered in July. In that same month, Los Angeles prosecutors announced that a New Jersey woman had been charged with hacking into email accounts belonging to the singer.

Later in September, Selena joined forces with DJ Snake , Ozuna and Cardi B for "Taki Taki", which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and won several music awards. Early Life of Selena Gomez

Gomez, who was named after the popular Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was raised in suburban Dallas. Inspired by her mother, an amateur actress, Gomez tried out for a role on the PBS children’s television series Barney & Friends and, as a result, appeared regularly on the program in 2002–04. After making her big-screen debut in the family movie Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), she auditioned for the Disney Channel, which eventually led to a guest spot on the TV series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In 2007 Gomez was cast as Alex Russo, a mischievous tomboy with magical powers, on a new Disney sitcom, Wizards of Waverly Place. The show, for which she also sang the theme song, became an instant hit among the preteen set, and she earned favourable comparisons to the channel’s leading ingenue, Miley Cyrus .

While continuing to star in Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez acted in various tween-oriented videos and TV movies and provided a voice for the animated feature Horton Hears a Who! (2008). She then landed lead roles in the theatrical film Ramona and Beezus (2010), which was based on a children’s novel by Beverly Cleary, and the romantic comedy Monte Carlo (2011). Gomez departed from her family-friendly image with a role as a college student seeking adventure in Florida in the lurid Spring Breakers (2012). She then portrayed the girlfriend of a college student who is killed in a shooting on campus in the drama Rudderless (2014) and a sorority sister in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016). Selena Gomez's Biography in Summary

Selena Gomez , in full  Selena Marie Gomez , (born July 22, 1992, Grand Prairie, Texas, U.S.), American actress and singer who won legions of young fans as the winsome star of the Disney television series  Wizards of Waverly Place  (2007–12) and as a pop vocalist.

After making her big-screen debut in the family movie  Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over  (2003), she auditioned for the Disney Channel, which eventually led to a guest spot on the TV series  The Suite Life of Zack and Cody . In 2007 Gomez was cast as Alex Russo, a mischievous tomboy with magical powers, on a new Disney sitcom,  Wizards of Waverly Place . The show, for which she also sang the theme song, became an instant hit among the preteen set, and she earned favourable comparisons to the channel’s leading ingenue, Miley Cyrus.

Gomez ventured into music as the front woman of Selena Gomez & the Scene, an electronic-influenced pop band that produced several dance hits. The group released the albums  Kiss & Tell  (2009),  A Year Without Rain  (2010), and  When the Sun Goes Down  (2011) before announcing its separation in 2012. Gomez then forged a solo career with  Stars Dance  (2013), which featured the seductive single “Come & Get It.” Subsequent solo albums included  Revival  (2015) and  Rare  (2020), the latter of which yielded the hit ballad “Lose You to Love Me.”

As Gomez transitioned into adulthood, her fame was undoubtedly magnified by a romantic relationship with pop singer  Justin Bieber . She was also known for her philanthropic work, much of it accomplished through UNICEF, which in 2009 appointed her a goodwill ambassador. In 2015 Gomez revealed that she had been diagnosed with lupus. As a result of complications from the disease, she had a kidney transplant in 2017.
