Justin Bieber (born March 1, 1994, London , Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian singer and teen idol whose fresh-faced good looks and appealing pop songs sparked a global craze beginning in 2009.

Bieber was raised by a single mother in Stratford , Ontario , Canada , and as a child he learned to play the drums , the piano , the guitar , and the trumpet . In 2007 he participated in a local singing competition, placing second, and his mother posted a video of his performance on the Web site YouTube for friends and family who were unable to attend. She later uploaded other homemade videos, in which Bieber sang popular rhythm-and-blues (R&B) songs and occasionally accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, and they soon attracted attention beyond their originally intended audience. Among those who saw Bieber’s videos was Scott (“Scooter”) Braun, a music promoter and talent agent, who invited the 13-year-old Bieber to record demos at a studio in Atlanta . While there, Bieber happened to encounter R&B singer Usher and arranged an informal audition with him. Impressed by Bieber’s natural confidence and vocal talent, Usher helped sign him to a recording contract in late 2008.

In May 2009 Bieber unveiled his first single, the buoyant puppy-love song “One Time,” and six months later he released the seven-track EP My World , composed mainly of glossy R&B-influenced pop. By this time his audience had dramatically expanded to include countless preadolescent girls who considered him a heartthrob, and the recording sold more than one million copies. He replicated the feat with the full-length album My World 2.0 (2010), which debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. Its lead single, the yearningly heartfelt “ Baby”—featuring a guest appearance from rapper Ludacris —reached the top five of Billboard ’s singles chart, and several other tracks landed in the Top 40. The official video for “Baby” also became the first to amass more than 500 million views on YouTube. Bieber’s enormous popularity was boosted by his allegiance to social media such as Twitter and his frequent television appearances.

Later in 2010 Bieber released the album My Worlds Acoustic , featuring stripped-down versions of his songs, and published an autobiographical book, Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story . Justin Bieber: Never Say Never , a documentary film interspersed with 3-D concert footage, opened the following year. Bieber maintained his visibility with the albums Never Say Never: The Remixes (2011), a companion to the film, and the Christmas -themed Under the Mistletoe (2011), both of which hit number one in the United States and Canada . On the similarly successful Believe (2012) and Believe Acoustic (2013), Bieber introduced a more mature sound, with the hit single “Boyfriend” recalling the suave R&B of Justin Timberlake .

As Bieber entered adulthood , his celebrity often overshadowed his music. His romantic relationships (with Selena Gomez , among others) and his occasional skirmishes with the law brought him considerable tabloid attention. His 2015 album Purpose found an audience beyond his youthful fan base, with each of its first three singles reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also in 2015, Bieber contributed vocals to Jack Ü’s Grammy Award -winning electro-pop hit “Where Are Ü Now.” Collaborations with other musicians followed, resulting in several popular songs. In 2018 Bieber married model Hailey Baldwin, and their relationship inspired Changes (2020). His sixth studio album, Justice , was released in 2021.

Justin Drew Bieber, better known as Justin Bieber, was born on March 1, 1994 in the small town of Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Bieber was raised by a single mom. His dad, Jeremy Bieber, left to start a family with another woman. According to some media reports, Justin and his father weren’t close growing up; his dad has been at times described as being a “deadbeat” who only resurfaced after Justin achieved YouTube fame. Jeremy reportedly considered becoming a rapper himself and has struggled with addiction problems. It was also reported that Justin had been partying with his dad just before his January 2014 arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Despite their allegedly complicated relationship, Justin has maintained that he and his dad are close. In 2010, 16-year-old Justin told Seventeen magazine: “I have a great relationship with my dad. When I was younger, he taught me how to play some songs on the guitar, like ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ by Bob Dylan .” Justin’s first tattoo, a seagull that he got in 2010, matches one his father has.

Bieber always had an interest in music. His mother gave him a drum kit for his second birthday and, as he tells it, he was "basically banging on everything I could get my hands on." But it was an obscure talent contest in his hometown, in which the 12-year-old Bieber finished second that put him on the road to superstardom. As a way to share his singing with family, Bieber and his mom began posting clips of him in 2007 performing covers of Stevie Wonder , Michael Jackson and Ne-Yo on YouTube.

Within months, Justin was an Internet sensation, with a large following of fans. In 2008, music manager Scooter Braun discovered Bieber's YouTube videos and arranged for him to fly to Atlanta to meet Usher , who promptly signed him to his record label.

At just 15 years old, Bieber's first single "One Time" reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 charts in 2009, an impressive feat for the newly signed singer. Since then, his music has continued to find success on the charts. As of August 2024, Bieber has had eight No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and 26 songs in the Top 10.

Bieber’s first EP My World hit stores in November 2009, selling more than 137,000 copies within a week. Bieber released his debut studio album  My World 2.0  with Island Records in March 2010 when he was 16 years old. The album, which was considered a second volume of his 2009  EP My World , offered 10 new songs to his growing fan base. 

My World 2.0  was named Top Pop Album at the  Billboard  Music Awards and won an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Album. The track "Baby," featuring rapper  Ludacris , broke into the  Billboard  Top 10, debuting at No. 5 on the Hot 100.

Under the Mistletoe

The singer's second studio album and first Christmas album  Under the Mistletoe came out in November 2011, featuring his own take on holiday classics, as well as a few of his own original holiday songs. The album sold 210,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard  200 chart.

Popular tracks include "Mistletoe," "Only Thing I Ever Get For Christmas," and "All I Want For Christmas Is (SuperFestive!)," which he sang as a duet with Mariah Carey. 

In June 2012, Bieber made a splash with his album  Believe , which quickly catapulted to the top of the  Billboard 200 chart. His hit single off the album "Boyfriend" ranked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart – a record for the young singer. 

The song's accompanying music video was nominated for several VMAs and People's Choice Awards, but only won an iHeartRadio Much Music Video Award for International Video of the Year by a Canadian.

His party anthem "Beauty and a Beat," featuring  Nicki Minaj , also broke into the Top 10. 

With his next effort, Bieber broke away from his child star status and stepped into adulthood, releasing  Purpose  in November 2015. Multiple songs on the album, like "Sorry" and "Love Yourself," are reportedly about his on-again, off-again relationship with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, while the title track is a piano ballad about his newfound faith.

Bieber nailed a summer Top 10 hit with the Diplo and Skrillex collaboration "Where Are Ü Now," winning his first Grammy for Best Dance Recording, and landed his first No. 1 single with "What Do You Mean?" 

After five years, Bieber returned with an R&B album inspired by new wife Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin). The singer released his fifth studio album Changes on February 14, 2020, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. Despite the genre, the album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.

His single "Yummy" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance, while the track "Intentions," featuring Quavo, was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

In March 2021, Bieber released his most recent album Justice , featuring a slew of guest appearances.  Justice topped the Billboard 200 chart in its first week and earned a total of eight Grammy nominations, with the track "Peaches," featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon, claiming half of them. 

His single "STAY" with The Kid LAROI spent 13 non-consecutive weeks at No. 2 on the Hot 100 and won five  Billboard Music Awards, including for Top Hot 100 Song and Top Collaboration.

After Bieber and model Hailey Baldwin were frequently spotted together during the summer of 2018, TMZ reported that the two had gotten engaged during a dinner in the Bahamas in July. The lovebirds had previously dated before splitting in 2016, even enduring a "long period of time when we weren't friends," according to Bieber, before rekindling their friendship and then their romance.

Bieber and Baldwin reportedly obtained a marriage license at a New York City courthouse on September 13, 2018, just two months after getting engaged. According to TMZ, Bieber was overheard saying, “I can’t wait to marry you, baby." Later that year he confirmed he was a married man.

On September 30, 2019, the couple held a second, larger marriage ceremony at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina.

It wasn't easy for Gomez to be Bieber's girlfriend, as she was accosted by some of his devoted followers. There were even death threats posted against her on Twitter after the pair was photographed kissing while on a 2011 vacation. The couple ended their relationship in November 2012, though they remained in touch on and off. In November 2017, Bieber and Gomez were spotted together publicly several times, stoking rumors that they had gotten back together.

Gomez's chart-topping ballad "Lose You to Love Me," released in fall 2019, was speculated to be about her relationship with Bieber.

Never Say Never Movie and Justin Bieber: Seasons

In 2011, Bieber took to the big screen in the concert documentary Never Say Never . His fans crowded movie theaters to catch him in action on stage and get a glimpse of his life behind the scenes. The movie, which eventually earned more than $73 million at the box office, also had guest appearances by Kanye West , Miley Cyrus and Bieber's musical mentor Usher.

In late January 2020, the artist debuted his 10-part YouTube docuseries, Justin Bieber: Seasons . The first episode, titled "Leaving the Spotlight," focused on his retreat from the public eye after cancelling the final weeks of a tour in 2017 and his journey back to recording again, with later episodes delving into his marriage and battles with depression.

Controversies

While still only in his teens, Bieber survived his first public scandal. A woman filed suit against Bieber in 2011, claiming that he was the father of her child. But a DNA test proved that the young pop star was not the father and the woman dropped her lawsuit. Bieber sang about the scandal in the song "Maria."

That was only the beginning of a string of scandals, bad behavior and unfavorable press for the young pop artist. In March 2013, Bieber's neighbor accused the singer of spitting on him, in addition to making threatening comments. Two months later, denizens of Bieber's neighborhood in Calabasas, California, complained that he was driving too fast in a residential area.

On April 15, 2013, Bieber visited a museum in Amsterdam that paid tribute to Anne Frank . Upon writing that the young Holocaust victim "would have been a Belieber," he faced more backlash from the public. On July 9, 2013, his image was scrutinized once again after he was recorded urinating in a janitor's bucket and yelling "F--- Bill Clinton ," holding a photo of the former president. Although he later apologized, his previously squeaky clean image began to tarnish even more.

On January 14, 2014, Bieber's home in California was searched after he was accused of egging a neighbor's house. Nine days later, Bieber was arrested for suspicion of drag racing and driving under the influence. After a Breathalyzer test showed that Bieber wasn't sober, he was taken into custody where he stayed until he posted bail, which was set at $2,500. The charges were eventually reduced to resisting arrest.

In January 2015, Justin Bieber was featured in a prominent Calvin Klein ad with Dutch model Lara Stone. The shots, which show a grown-up Bieber stripped down to his underwear, gained mass attention but were quickly engulfed in controversy following speculation that the photos were digitally enhanced to make Bieber's body appear more muscular.

Lyme Disease and Depression

As he matured into his 20s, Bieber seemed intent on cleaning up his act and largely managed to avoid embarrassing incidents. However, the pop star still drew attention for his personal issues, particularly when it was reported in February 2019 that he was being treated for depression.

Bieber confirmed his situation in March, posting a photo to Instagram of himself praying with Kanye West, with the caption: "Just wanted to keep you guys updated a little bit hopefully what I’m going through will resonate with you guys. Been struggling a lot. Just feeling super disconnected and weird.. I always bounce back so I’m not worried just wanted to reach out and ask for your guys to pray for me. God is faithful and ur prayers really work thanks .. the most human season I’ve ever been in facing my stuff head on.."

In a January 2020 Instagram post, Bieber revealed that he had recently battled a case of mononucleosis and been diagnosed with Lyme disease.
