• Tamil Moli Katturai: 2004-ல் தமிழ் மொழி செம்மொழி என்ற பெருமையை பெற்றது. தொன்மை, தனித்தன்மை, பொதுமை பண்பு, நடு நிலைமை, தாய்மை தன்மை, தனித்து இயங்கும் தன்மை, இலக்கண, இலக்கிய வளம், கலைநயம், உயர்ந்த சிந்தனை, மொழிகோட்பாடு போன்ற பண்புகளை கொண்டதால் தான் தமிழ் செம்மொழி என்ற பெயரை பெற்றுள்ளது.
• ஒரு மொழி செம்மொழி ஆக வேண்டும் என்றால் குறைந்தது 1000 ஆண்டுகளாவது பழமை வாய்ந்ததாக இருக்க வேண்டும். அந்த வகையில் பார்க்கும் போது நம்முடைய மொழி பல்லாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான மொழி. செம்மொழி என்பதற்கு செம்மையான மொழி என்று அர்த்தம்.

• Tamil Mozhi Katturai: தமிழ் மொழிக்கு அக்காலத்திலும் சரி, இக்காலத்திலும் சரி பல எதிர்ப்புகள் இருந்து வருகிறது. பழங்காலத்தில் நம்முடைய முன்னோர்கள் தமிழ்மொழிக்கு வந்த அனைத்து எதிர்ப்புகளையும் தாண்டி தமிழை வளர்த்து வந்தனர்.

நம் மொழி தமிழ்!

திராவிட மொழிக் குடும்பத்தின் மூல மொழி தமிழ். திராவிடக் குடும்பத்தின் முதன்மையான மொழி, மூத்த மொழி, திராவிட மொழிகளின் தாய் மொழி - நம் மொழியாம் தமிழ்.

இந்த மொழிக் கூட்டத்தில் மொத்தம் 26 மொழிகள். அத்தனைக்கும் மூல மொழியாக நம் தாய் மொழியான தமிழ் இருப்பது பெருமைக்குரிய ஒன்று. இவை தவிர 35 சிறு மொழிக் கூட்டத்திற்கும் தமிழே மூல மொழியாக இருப்பது வியப்புக்குரியது.

இன்று தனிச் சிறப்புடன் கூடிய ஒரு மொழியாக திகழும் மலையாளம், 9வது நூற்றாண்டு வரை தமிழின் ஒரு 'டயலக்ட்' ஆகத்தான் இருந்து வந்தது -அதாவது மதுரைத் தமிழ், கொங்குத் தமிழ், நெல்லைத் தமிழ் போல. தமிழிலிலிருந்து நேரடியாக பிரிந்த ஒரு மொழிதான் மலையாளம்.

தமிழை மூன்று காலங்களாக ஆய்வாளர்கள் பிரிக்கின்றனர். கி.மு. 300க்கும், 700க்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலம் பழந்தமிழ்க் காலம் என்றும், 700க்கும், 1600க்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலத்தை இடைக்காலத் தமிழ் என்றும், 1600 முதல் இன்று வரையிலான காலத்தை நவீன தமிழ் காலம் என்றும் ஆய்வாளர்கள் வகைப்படுத்துகின்றனர்.

தமிழ் என்ற பெயர் எப்போது முதல் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது என்பதற்கு தெளிவான ஆதாரம் இல்லை. இருப்பினும் கி.மு. முதலாம் நூற்றாண்டில் தமிழ் என்ற பெயர் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டிருப்பதாக செய்திகள் உள்ளன.

செம்மொழித் தமிழ்...

உலகச் செம்மொழிகளில் ஒன்றாக தமிழ் திகழ்கிறது. செம்மொழி என்பது ஒரு அடையாளம் அல்ல, மாறாக அது ஒரு மொழியின் செம்மையை, சீரை, சிறப்பை, செழுமையை வெளிச்சம் போட்டுக் காட்ட உதவுகிறது.

மிகப் பாரம்பரியமான, பழமையான இலக்கியத்தைக் கொண்ட மொழியாக இருக்க வேண்டும். சுயம் இருக்க வேண்டும், வேறொரு பாரம்பரியத்தின் நிழல் அந்த மொழியின் மீது படிந்திருக்கக் கூடாது. அப்படிப்பட்ட மொழியே செம்மொழி என கூறுகிறார் மொழியியல் வல்லுநர் ஜார்ஜ் ஹார்ட்.

இன்று உலகளவில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மொழிக் கூட்டங்கள் இருந்தாலும் பேச்சளவிலும், எழுத்தளவிலும் உயிர்ப்புடன் இருப்பது சில நூறு மொழிகள் தான். அதிலும் பழமை வாய்ந்ததாக, பாரம்பரியம் வாய்ந்ததாக, சிறப்பு வாய்ந்ததாக, தங்களுக்கென்று சுயத்தைக் கொண்ட மொழிகள் வெகு சிலதான். அதில் ஒன்று நம் செம்மொழி தமிழ்.

இலக்கணத்திலும், இலக்கியத்திலும் சிறந்த மொழிகளுக்கே இந்த சிறப்பு கிடைக்கிறது. சுமேரிய மொழி, ஆதி எகிப்திய மொழி, ஆதி பாபிலோனிய மொழி, ஹீப்ரூ, சீன மொழி, கிரேக்கம், சமஸ்கிருதம், தமிழ், லத்தீன், மண்டாயிக், சிரியாக், ஆர்மீனியன், பெர்சியன் ஆகியவற்றை செம்மொழிகளாக உலகம் கண்டிருக்கிறது.

ஆனால் இந்த சிறிய மொழிக் கூட்டத்தில் இன்று உலக அளவில் வலுவான வரலாற்றுடன், மிக வீரியமான உயிர்ப்புடன் கூடிய ஒரே மொழியாக தமிழ் மட்டுமே திகழ்கிறது என்பது நிஜம், அது தமிழுக்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள மிகப் பெரிய பெருமை என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.

தமிழ் தந்த தொல்காப்பியத்திற்கு ஈடு இணையே இல்லை என்பது பல்வேறு செம்மொழிகளை ஆய்வு செய்தவர்கள் அளித்துள்ள தீர்ப்பு.

செந்தமிழ் (செம்மொழியாகிய தமிழ்) எனுஞ்சொல் தமிழில் கிடைத்துள்ள மூலமுதல் நூலான, மூவாயிரம் ஆண்டுப் பழைய தொல்காப்பியத்திலேயே இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது.

தமிழ் எனும் சொல்லுக்குக் கிபி 10ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் எழுந்த பிங்கல நிகண்டு, 'இனிமையும் நீர்மையும் தமிழ் எனலாகும்' என்று பொருள் கூறுகிறது.

செந்தமிழ் என்பதற்குக் 'கலப்பற்ற தூயதமிழ்' என்று பொருள் தருகிறது தமிழ்ப் பேரகராதி.

செந்தமிழ் எனுஞ் சொல் உணர்வு நிலையில் இலக்கண வரம்பை வற்புறுத்துகிறது. செயல் நிலையில் செம்மொழி ஆக்கத்தை வற்புறுத்துகிறது. மதிப்பீட்டு நிலையில், இலக்கணத்தை வற்புறுத்தாவிடில் கிளைமொழிகள் தோன்றிப் புதுமொழிகளாக மாறும் என எச்சரிக்கிறது என்று மொழியியல் அறிஞர் செ.வை.சண்முகம் விளக்குகிறார்.

செம்மொழி எனுஞ் சொல்லை, அகநானூற்றின் 349 ஆம் பாடல் 'நடுநிலை தவறாத மொழி' எனும் பொருளில் ஆண்டுள்ளது.

தமிழ் எம்மொழிக்கும் தாழ்ந்து வளையாது தலைநிமிர்ந்து நின்று தன் தனித்தன்மையைக் காத்து, தன்னை அணைத்து அழிக்க வந்த வடமொழியையும் வலுவிழக்கச் செய்து வாழ்ந்து வளர்ந்துவரும் மொழியாகும். ஆங்கிலம் லத்தீன் மொழிக்குக் கடன்பட்டிருப்பது போலவே தமிழ்மொழியும் சமஸ்கிருதத்திற்குக் கடன்பட்டிருப்பதாகக் கருதுவது அறவே பொருந்தாது. பொருள் விளக்கத்தைச் சாகவிடாமல் சொற்களைக் கைவிடுவது ஆங்கிலத்திற்கு இயலாது. ஆனால், சமற்கிருதச் சொற்களுக்கு ஈடான சொற்செல்வங்களைத் தமிழ் அளவின்றிப் பெற்றுள்ளது. இது, முனைவர் ராபர்ட் கால்டுவெல் அவர்களின் ஆய்வு முடிவு.

தொல்காப்பியம் மட்டுமல்லாமல் தமிழுக்கு மணி மகுடமாக விளங்குபவை சங்க கால இலக்கியங்கள். அவற்றில் பல நம்மிடையே இன்று இல்லை. காலம் அவற்றை அழித்து விட்டது. நமது கைக்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள சில நூல்கள் ஒரு பாணை சோறுக்கு ஒரு சோறு பதம் என்பது போல தமிழின் தனிச் சிறப்பை வெளிக்காட்ட உதவுகிறது.

பத்துப்பாட்டு, எட்டுத்தொகை, அக நானூறு, புற நானூறு, நற்றினை, ஐங்குறுநூறு, பரிபாடல் ஆகியவை அவற்றில் சில. இக்கால கட்டத்தில் தமிழ் இலக்கியம் மிக செழுமையான நிலையில் இருந்தது. சங்க கால இலக்கியம், தமிழின் பொற்காலம் என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.

கி.பி. 3வது நூற்றாண்டில் சிலப்பதிகாரம், மணிமேகலை என்ற இரட்டை காப்பியங்களைக் கண்டது தமிழ். தமிழின் ராமாயணம், மகாபாரதம் என இதைச் சொல்லலாம். அதேபோல கம்ப ராமாயணமும். தமிழின் அபாரமான படைப்புகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

பக்தி இலக்கியத்திலும் தமிழுக்கு தனிச் சிறப்பு உண்டு. குறிப்பாக நாயன்மார் இலக்கியம் தமிழுக்கு கிடைத்த இன்னொரு மகுடம். திருஞானசம்பந்தர், திருநாவுக்கரசர், சுந்தரர், மாணிக்கவாசகர் ஆகியோர் நான்கு தலை சிறந்த நாயன்மார்கள் ஆவர்.

அதேபோல 12 ஆழ்வார்கள் தமிழுக்கு செய்த சேவை மறக்க முடியாதது. அவர்களில் ஆண்டாளும், குலசேகர ஆழ்வாரும் குறிப்பிடத்தகுந்தவர்கள். சூடிக் கொடுத்த சுடர்க் கொடியாள் ஆண்டாள் படைத்த திருப்பாவை தமிழின் தனிச் சிறப்புக்கு அருமையான உதாரணம்.

தமிழுக்கு அருஞ்சேவை புரிந்தவர்களில் உமறுப் புலவரை குறிப்பிடாமல் இருக்க முடியாது. சீறாப்புராணம் என்ற சீரிய காவியத்தைப் படைத்தவர் உமறுப் புலவர். 5000 பாடல்களில் அண்ணல் நபிகளாரின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்றை அரிய பாடல்கள் மூலம் வடித்துள்ளார் உமறுப் புலவர்.

அதேபோல கிறிஸ்தவ சமுதாயத்தினரின் தாக்கமும் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் விரவிக் கிடக்கிறது. அதிலும் கால்டுவெல், வின்ஸ்லோ, ஜி.யு.போப், பெஸ்கி ஆகியோரின் பங்களிப்பு தமிழுக்கு மிகப் பெரியது. இத்தாலியைச் சேர்ந்த பெஸ்கி படைத்த தேம்பவாணி தமிழின் அரும்பெரும் கவிப் படைப்புகளில் ஒன்றாக ஜொலிக்கிறது.

இப்படி தமிழின் சிறப்புகளையும், அதன் சீரையும், செழுமையையும் சொல்லிக் கொண்டே போகலாம். இப்படிப்பட்ட சிறப்புடைய தமிழ், 2004ம் ஆண்டில் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டாலும் கூட, ஈராயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே அது செம்மொழியாக பட்டொளி வீசிப் பறக்கத் தொடங்கி விட்டது என்பதே உண்மை.

Situated in the southern most state of India, Tamil Nadu shares its borders with the states of Kerala , Karnataka , and Andhra Pradesh . A land of exhilarating and breathtaking beauty, Tamil Nadu has a distinct place in India. The state is home to great historical heritage and tradition. Tamil Nadu culture is super rich and truly vibrant, hence the state is frequently visited by travellers and history enthusiasts from all parts of the world. The people of the state give immense importance to their culture and traditions, and this is evident from their daily life.

Kanyakumari, the southern tip of India, is a marvel in itself, the fascinating and mesmerizing beauty of the place is beyond description, and is also one of the places frequented by tourists. Tamil Nadu is home to an ancient history spanning over two thousand years. Throughout its history, the state has been under the rule of different dynasties, such as the Pallava Dynasty, The Pandya Dynasty, the Chola Dynasty, and the Chera Dynasty. The state’s vast and rich heritage can be observed in the historically relevant and culturally rich monuments that adorn the state.

Majority of people in Tamil Nadu speak Tamil , and hence it is also the official language of the state. A part of the Dravidian language family, Tamil has speakers around the world. It is also the official language of Srilanka and Singapore and is also spoken in considerable numbers in the countries of South Africa, Mauritius, Malaysia , and Fiji. Recognized as a classical language of India due to its independent tradition, significant ancient literature, and ancient origins, the language is also recognized as one among the 22 languages which are included in the Indian Constitution. As the oldest and the longest surviving classical languages prevalent in the world today, the language is also heir to a fascinating collection of ancient literature. 

Tamil Nadu  Food Culture

South Indian food is quite popular for its remarkable delicacy and the unique blend of spices. The Tamil Nadu cuisine too is no exception and offers a wide range of dishes to choose from. Rice is the staple food of the Tamilians and includes a variety of the same. From the ordinary plain rice to the different rice varieties such as lemon rice, Thakkali Soru (Tomato rice), Thengai Soru (Coconut rice), Paruppu Soru (Lentil rice) is prepared in the state. Sambar, Rasam, Coconut Chutney are among the most popular side dishes in the state. Breakfast usually includes Dosa, which too has several varieties or idli along with coconut chutney or sambar. Uttapam, a dish identical to the Dosa but with tomatoes and other spices, is also a common breakfast dish in the state.

On special occasions, the people of Tamil Nadu prefer to have food on a banana leaf. Other dishes include Poriyal, Puliyodharai, Medhu Vadai, paniyaram among others. For those with a sweet tooth, Tamil Nadu is also home to some a variety of sweet dishes and desserts such as the Arisi thengai payasam, Pasi Paruppu Payasam, among others. The state also has some enjoyable snacks such as the Murukku and Seedai, among others.

Traditional Dress  of Tamil Nadu

For the people of Tamil Nadu, their attire is an important part of their culture as it represents their rich tradition. Women usually dress in sarees, which are known for their elaborate, elegant designs and vibrant colours. The Kanjeevaram saree is the most popular kind of saree in the state and is widely worn by the women of the state, mostly during special occasions. Young girls usually wear the half saree which comprises a blouse, a full-length skirt and a shawl known as Davani. Tamilian men wear a lungi and a shirt along with an Angavastram which is a crucial piece in their wardrobe. The traditional dresses are usually worn along with traditional accessories, such as Chains, Oddiyanam, and payals made of gold. They also adore their hair with flower garlands in a particular fashion, called gajras.

The cultural festivals of any state are instrumental in highlighting and celebrating their culture. As a land with a rich heritage, Tamil Nadu is also home to several cultural festivals, which portray the vivid and diverse Tamil Nadu culture.

Pongal is perhaps the most significant and popular cultural festival of the state. The festival takes place in January and is celebrated as an expression of gratitude for the Harvest, and hence is also known as the Harvest festival of the state. The festival takes place in a span of 4 days, and each day has its own significance. The first day is called Bhogi Pongal, and is seen as a new beginning; all the houses in the state are decorated on this day. The second day is known as Surya Pongal; on this day people wear traditional clothes. The third day of the festival is known as Mattu Pongal during this time the famous Jallikattu event happens, and the last day is Kaanum Pongal, which marks the end of the celebrations.

The Tamil New year, also known as Puthandu, is another immensely popular festival of the state. This day marks a new beginning filled with hope and joy for the people of the state. On this day, beautiful kolams are drawn with the use of eye catching colours. People adorn themselves with new clothes and prepare special dishes for the day.

The Natyanjali Dance Festival held in Tamil Nadu has admirers from around the country. The festival gathers around close to four hundred dancers from around the country to bring together the unique and varied forms of art, such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, among others. Other popular cultural festivals include Karthigai Deepam, Thiruvaiyaru Festival, among others.

Carnatic Music is the most significant part of the Music of Tamil Nadu . It is considered the Classical Music of Southern India and is said to be one of the oldest systems of Music prevalent in the world. Carnatic Music is not unknown and is beloved by music lovers all around the world. Apart from Carnatic Music, the state also abounds in folk music and is home to some of the renowned singers of all time.

Apart from the Music, the state is also home to some of the elegant and mesmerizing dance forms prevalent in the world today. Bharatanatyam is perhaps the most popular dance form in Tamil Nadu and has gained admirers from around the world. Considered to be one of India’s Oldest dance forms, Bharatanatyam is said to be the precursor of all other styles of classical dances . The costumes worn by the performers are both striking and vibrant, this along with the ornaments, makes the dance more beautiful. Other folk art forms of Tamil Nadu includes  Karakattam, Devarattam  among others.

Arts And Crafts  of Tamil Nadu

Art is an inevitable part of Tamil Nadu’s culture. From the Kolam that is drawn at the entrance of each home at sunrise to the spectacular Tanjore paintings , the state is indeed a great spot for art enthusiasts from every corner of the world. For the women of the household, their day begins with the making of a Kolam at the entrance of their homes; with an intricate and beautiful design. The Tanjore paintings and Tanjore Dolls are quite famous as they are embellished with gold.  

Apart from the paintings, the state is also known for its pottery, musical instruments, and amazing crafted jewellery. Pottery is an ancient practice that is well preserved in the state. The state is also known for its production of enchanting silk sarees, created through the traditional methods, which are in massive demand throughout the country.

Literature  of Tamil Nadu

Tamil is one of the oldest languages prevalent in the world today and is hence a proud heir to a rich ancient literature. In fact, Tamil has the oldest literature prevalent in India today. The literature spans from the 4 th century with the Chilappatikaran and the Thirukkural , to modern literature. Tamil literature has a soul of its own and is quite different from that of others. The cultural richness and the varied heritage of the state are well represented in Tamil Literature. Tamil literature also has to its credit many literary gems, who continue to be loved and acclaimed by many.

Heritage and Architecture  of Tamil Nadu

The state’s heritage can be witnessed in the architectural brilliance and the historical significance can be observed in the temples built here. Almost all the dynasties that ruled the state valued and promoted art and architecture, which led to the building of countless temples in the state, representing the distinct features of the period when it was built. These temples were built here by the rulers of various dynasties and accurately represent the Dravidian culture and art. In the Chola dynasty, the architecture of the state underwent a significant evolution. The rulers of the dynasty built several temples, such as the Brihadisvara Temple, Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, among others.

The Brihadisvara temple, situated in Thanjavur, is one of the largest temples in Southern India. UNESCO has termed the group of temples, built during the Chola dynasty in Tamil Nadu as the “Great Living Chola Temples”, and they are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, the Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram, and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram together form the “Great Living Chola Temples”. Apart from them, the other monuments that portray the rich heritage and architecture of the state include the Valluvar Kottam, dedicated to the poet Valluvar and Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal. Chettinad Palace is a great example for the tasteful architecture that Chettiars incorporated in their lifestyles.

The majority of the people of Tamil Nadu engage in agriculture and it is known as the backbone of the state . A variety of crops are cultivated, including millets, pulses, paddy, and even commercial crops such as sugarcane, sunflower, cotton, and coconut, among others. Apart from agriculture, the people of Tamil Nadu also engage in a variety of other professions.  

Tamil Nadu is the land of enchanting beauty, vibrant cultures and grand traditions. Through its fascinating heritage and historical significance, the state has managed to capture the attention of the world.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Tirukkural holds the same status in Tamil culture that Confucius’s Analects hold in the Chinese and Sadi’s Gulistan holds in the Persian cultures respectively. Not only is the Tirukkural considered a masterpiece of literature but is also seen to embody the essence of Tamil ethics, virtue, and morality. A copy of the text can be found in nearly every Tamil home and verses from it are frequently quoted. In fact, it is so revered that one can take an oath on it in Tamil courts of law. Despite such reverence, very little is definitively known either about the work’s author or the context of its production. Traditionally, it is attributed to Tiruvalluvar. The prefix  tiru  in both Tiruvalluvar and Tirukkural is the Tamil equivalent of the Sanskrit  sri  and roughly means holy or sacred. Hence, the name of the reputed author is Valluvar. It is said that Tiruvalluvar, or Holy Valluvar, was a humble weaver who, despite his humble origins and implied lack of formal education, was so sagacious, pious, and holy that he perfectly captured the very essence of ethics, virtue, and morality, in fact the very essence of  dharma , in short pithy poetic couplets that remain unsurpassed to this day. Tiruvalluvar is generally believed to have lived in the 2nd century BCE, although there is no hard historical evidence for this and he might have lived any time between the 2nd century BCE and the 7th century CE. There is also no agreement on the place of his birth and exact religious affiliation. Nearly every major religion and sect in Tamil society has laid claim on him. Buddhists and Jains point to the similarity of Tiruvalluvar’s ethical teaching and the ethics of their respective traditions. Some Christians claim to see a Christian influence on him and declare him to be a disciple of St. Thomas the Apostle, who is traditionally held to be buried in Tamil Nadu. Even among Hindus there is no agreement on whether Tiruvalluvar was a Shaivite or Vaishnavite. Yet all appreciate his insights and their literary style. The title of the work, Tirukkural, refers to this pithiness of the poetic couplets as  kural  literally means short, brief, concise or abbreviated. The work can thus be described as a set of poetic aphorisms. The meter used for the couplets is  venpa , which is a very short meter. The text covers 133 topics each with 10 couplets dedicated to it giving a total of 1330 couplets. The topics are broadly related to three themes and thus divided into three sections. The first covers  aram  (virtue or  dharma ), the second deals with  poru l  (wealth) and the last section is about  inbam  (love and enjoyment). These three sections cover the four main aims of human life as understood by Hindu sages. In Sanskrit they are called  dharma  (virtue, religious ethics),  artha  (wealth),  kama  (physical enjoyment), and  moksha  (salvation). The section on  aram  deals with both  dharma  and  moksha , while the section on  porul  deals with  artha , both at the individual and at the social and political level, and the section on  inbam  deals with  kama . In the traditions and legends related to Tiruvalluvar, another important person connected with his work is his wife Vasuki. Not only was she an ideal wife but was also wise and holy like her husband. She became a means and medium for many of the teachings about an ideal married life, relations between spouses, patience, and  forbearance. It is through her that Tiruvalluvar was able to give the answer to the question of whether salvation can be achieved while being a married member of society or does one have to renounce all social, especially marital, relations. Tirukkural was first translated into Latin by the Italian Jesuit missionary Constanzo Beschi in 1699. As interest in Tamil culture and the Tamil language grew, it was subsequently translated into a number of European languages including English. Among these is the translation featured here that includes commentaries by respected Brahim scholars. Until recently, the University of California, Berkeley was the only university in the United States to have a chair in Tamil Studies. From the very beginning of the Department for South & Southeast Asian Studies Tamil was one of the primary languages offered by it. World-renowned scholars, like Murray Barnson Emeneau, made Cal famous for the study of Dravidian and Indian linguistics. In 1975 Prof. George Hart joined as the Professor of Tamil and remained the holder of the Tamil Chair until his retirement a few years ago. His wife Kausalya Hart was the Tamil language instructor on campus and together they wrote Tamil textbooks that are still widely used. Professor Hart played a key role in having the Indian government formally declare Tamil to be a classical language in 2004. Prof. Hart’s scholarly research on Tamil and Tamil literature earned him many awards and accolades including the Padma Shri, India’s third highest honor. Berkeley is set to continue its fine scholarly tradition in Tamil Studies as it looks forward to welcoming a new Tamil professor in a few months’ time. At the same time, Tamil language instruction continues to be provided by Dr. Bharathy Sankara Rajulu.
